2001's depiction of space travel set the standard for sci-fi movies for decades. Even today it's rarely matched, and very few movies have exceeded it. Gravity is the only one I can think of offhand that arguably does.
@@oskari7121 In truth, the peak of photographic quality came in the 1950's. There are incredibly detailed photographs from the Great Depression. The problem was, film still degraded with use, and we got really lucky that effotts have been made to preserve this movie until the digital age.

Oh, and they should DEFINITELY reveal the giant space baby is actually God being reborn and creating mankind all over again! Last but not least; they should explain the monoliths for the people with no brain cells.
There is no remake because it is absolutely puzzling, confusing, and remarkably well made. It is so puzzling that nobody can remake it because they have no clue what it is about. They also do not dare remaking it because it is already so well made and timeless.
No one. Simply no one could, or even should do a remake of this opus. Not even a team of the world's greatest directors could do it. Kubrick is just on another level of brilliance, and should they even try to remake ANY of his movies.. I'll gladly fucking kill myself
The greatest moviegoing experience of my life: seeing this film in a large, packed theater in New York, on a huge screen, when it first came out in 1968. Given how 2001 still awes people today, imagine its effect on a sci-fi-loving teen back then who was totally unprepared for what he encountered.
Same for me. I was a teenager into SF in a big way, and was totally blown away. It remains probably my favourite movie. And don't forget the music - as a reviewer commented at the time - who would have ever connected the Blue Danube with deep space? But as usual with Kubrik's musical choices, it was absolutely perfect.
My dad took me to a theater in Times Square when it was released in 1968. We left at intermission. Do you know if they opened the side curtains during the time of the time journey?
I first saw it at age 5 in 1968 at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood! Cinerama is NOT the same thing as IMAX! (Three projectors and a Super Wide screen!) It was mind blowing for someone who never saw anything like that! I had a TRUE Religious experience that changed the way I saw everything after that! It became a part of my soul! And that was from a SINGLE viewing! No VHS back then! My Dad yelled "What the hell was that!" He was just as unprepared for that film as I was! But he was very disappointed.
I envy you. I would do anything to be able to watch it on a large screen in Super Panavision 70mm! The Mitchel Super 65mm and Super 70mm cameras are in museums and no longer work. Most of them have been destroyed. It would be great if some of these cameras were reassembled or restored to funtioning. There is plenty of books from the 2001 series to supply more material. However, Stanley Kubrick and Sir Arthur C. Clarke are dead.

@@MrPabgon I think he meant in a way that most today movies are perhaps just for "entertaining" purpouses. It's always nice when directors make people experience the movie rather than simply watch it. What they really meant is to give you an experience rather than just entertainment. 2001 is entertaining, however, it goes way beyond that and it feels awesome, an experience. I think a nice analogy is chocolate, yes, chocolate. Milk chocolate is always gonna be fun (entertaining) but it sometimes can get boring and repetitive (too much sugar maybe?) then Dark chocolate comes in handy, it's fun (entertaining) and all but it leaves you a different taste in your mouth, it gives you something else to experience.
I watch 2001: A Space Odessey, almost every night. I have been doing it many years. Two hours before I fall before my time time for sleep, I start playing it. I have worn out three VHS cassettes, and one DVD player. I am finally getting a blu-ray player and the first blu-ray is already picked out.
@@JackKnifedJuggernautt I will not have to pace myself now. Blu-ray disks to not go bad unless abused. The player may get old. But I have a few years to worry about that. The blu-ray copy came with a digital copy I can download. I am going to record the digital copy onto a flash drive and use the USB port in the blu-ray player to run the movie every night. This will keep the wear on the mechanical parts to a minimum. I am going to put the disk in tonight. But tomorrow, I am putting in the USB copy I will be making.
the last scene where dave was traveling through the star gate with all the gigantic space imagery and the distorted landscape from the beginning part with the man apes and the music gave me exestentialism and it scared tf out of me

This is the most BORING movie ever made. Well, While I'm open to slow pace movies - you know, some of the deep and meaningful European movies for instance - I have to confess I have never seen a more boring movie in my life. This has to win the grand Oscar of the most boring movie ever made. And trust me, I watch a LOT of movies - 4 to 6 per day, as my job requires. As to "BEAUTY", as mentioned by another amateur critique here, well, I guess "beauty" is in the eyes of the beholder as the proverb goes. Personally, I found it, err... not so much ugly (apart from the growling apes) but ... duh... boring beyond belief. How on earth the current rating of IMDb shows 8.4/10 beats the sh*t out of me.

2001, love it or hate it, it INSPIRED and CREATED modern sci-fi to this day....it is THST important of a film...and no, it’s not my favorite films, but I really respect it and enjoy a lot of moments in it

MovieCore I really liked the beginning of Ex-Machina, because it had a very interesting set-up. I thought it was going to ask and even try to answer some very big questions, but it didn't. The film disappointed me after the interesting set-up, especially the ending. It had great potential, but a mediocre execution, like Annihilation from the same director. Interstellar might be one of the most overrated films of all time. I'll tell you why after I've watched Star Trek: Wrath of Khan.
Was having a bad day a couple of years ago. Went into my room, locked the door, turned off the lights and put in 2001 into the player with the sound almost at full blast. ONE OF THE BEST MOVIE EXPERIENCES I HAVE EVER HAD.
This is the movie that I saw as a kid who loved Star Wars and wanted to watch more space stuff. It was the first instance that had me question "who directed this?" This was the movie that made me understand how some directors and cinematographers are just on a different level. Nobody was like Kubrick.
The have been artistic sci-fi movies before this movie and since, though the only one that I can think of that is held in as high of a regard as 2001 by film critics is Metropolis.
I remember that four years ago when I saw this film for the first time. I thought it was boring as fuck and literally fell asleep back then. Few months ago I couldn't get to sleep so I was like "hey I should rewatch 2001 because at least it can make me sleep because of that boredom". Well it failed because I watched the whole thing and couldn't sleep the whole night because I was so blown away from what I saw.
There are movie you just dont like at a first viewing. Some times you like them at one watch. Movies like 2001,Brazil,Blade Runner,mother,etc. Then you remember great things about them (Metaphors,Allegories,Satirical elements,easter eggs,homages to other movies,etc) it's fun to listen to other people's opinion to feel the need to rewatch them. It's never good to watch them once.
I did too. Never like Harvey dent,Subplot of Lao or the third act which i found anticlimatic...after rewatching it several times still dont think is Da best movie ever (Have problem with some exposition)but i think is a good one with metaphors,ideas,homages....and its also strongly influential.
I am still amazed this movie came out in 1968. If it weren't for the obviously old sound quality, you could tell me this movie came out last year and I would likely believe you. The themes are still super relevant, the visual effects and overall direction are mind-boggling, and the characters do not feel like products of the time. This film is quite literally timeless.

@Disney is the Devil The Shining is in my opinion #2 on the list under 2001. Don't get me wrong I love Clockwork but I've never compulsively kept in on repeat for days and weeks and even months at a time like I have for The Shining. and no...that's not an exaggeration. I've even watched it on mute around 30-40 times. There are only certain movies I can do that with and The Shining is one of them. It's one of the most soothing, rhythmic and visual films ever. It is timeless and never gets old. Even watching it on mute I can still feel that movie.
HAL didn't kill the crew because it won in chess. HAL killed the crew because they weren't supposed to know about the mission details and it read their lips saying they would shut HAL down...if HAL was shut down the mission would never be completed...they explain this in the film.
The only reason they wanted to shut HAL down was because it misdiagnosed the fault of the communication satellite. They thought HAL was faulty and not up to the task on hand to continue the mission. HAL malfunctioned because he was instructed to lie something impossible for an A.I. This was explained by Dr. Shandra (HAL maker) in the sequel 2010 another superb movie.

HAL had crisis because of conflicting orders - keep the mission secret (even from Pool and Bowman), while his basic programing was to be entirely truthful. He tried to solve this by severing connection to Earth (which he saw as something like his watcher and consciousnes), thus the AE-35 malfunction. When his plan was discovered (on Earth they made the settings of the other HAL comp the same as the one aboard Destiny and saw what this did to it), HAL in his attempt to escape detection tried to prevent another replacement of AE-35, and did it by killing Frank who was trying to do the job.
The sfx hold up to this day. I saw 2010 first as a child, then I watched 2001. Then I read the books. Then I re-watched 2001 when I got a bit older and understood it better 2001 is epic. 2010 was different, but it sought to explain what happened and I read where Kubrick gave his blessing to Peter Hyams. Roy Scheider was the perfect casting choice.
Yes, but that doesn’t warrant repeated viewings. Eventually you have to compare it to other movies you could be watching instead. I have never been a huge fan of outer space. I prefer other settings. Even though I appreciate how good this looks for 1968 that alone is not enough to get me to watch it again. I also have about 83 other movies on my watchlist that I’ve never watched, but that didn’t stop me from watching Banshees of Inisherin 5x so I can’t say that’s the only reason I have no interest in watching it again.
My best friend in high school felt hypnotized by the movie in 1975 when he saw it for the first time, specifically by the Stargate scene. He could not start the car afterward until he stopped shaking.
I often find it hard to put into words how I feel about 2001. This pretty much encapsulates it perfectly. I was forced to watch it in film school, and I HATED it the first time I saw it. But, over time, I have come to hold it to the same esteem many other film fans do. Thanks for the video!
Kubrick is the most talented and gifted director of the past 100 years. I aspire in all of my work to follow his example in cinematic art, because of any director, he truly made his films visual masterpieces. Every single shot mattered and had a true purpose and were so perfectly placed.
@@sameerhafeez7029 Well, for starters, it's really freaking hella slow. There are a lot of screens which such a slow pace that it becomes annoying (for example when he goes out of the ship in the smaller ship to rescue his colleague. The movements were so slow). Kubrick could've just made those kind of scenes faster. And well, I remember I had other flaws in mind (althoguh they were more like details, my main problem with it is the pace), but they aren't coming to my mind now :P So yeah, basically the pace. I'm not saying it's a horrible or really bad movie. I'm sure the pace didn't affect the experience for many people, but did kind of ruined it for me. I do like the cinematography, it's really good, specially considering the date, and how ahead of its time it is, and also the general message or guist of the movie. I'm just saying the pace is really off. Not a bad movie, by any means, but not a masterpiece either
Hypnotising is a perfect word to describe this film. Watched it for the first time over a month ago, and I really did feel like I was in a trance all throughout the length of the film, it was an incredibly unique experience.
Finally, I was able to watch this movie. When I was a teenager I was shocked to hear people say that this movie was Star Wars level of grandeur and doubted it. I had looked at it thereafter and I was comforted in my doubt: it does not reach Star wars. Afterwards I learned that there was a longer version than the one I had and I looked for it. I finally found it, watched the movie again (just today) and am now convinced of my verdict: this movie does not reach Star wars. When we create a work that we are going to show to all kinds of different people, we must worry about the construction of our work and have something strong to offer, so that our work is worthy of the highest praise. There is a lot of bad taste in this movie. Kubrick poses a lot of things, he decrees what he wants without logical construction. In this movie there are too many facts that happen without any logical reason. And for bad taste, here is an example: how can adults presented as competent and sensible send 5 other very competent adults on a very critical, unprecedented mission, without even telling them what they are likely to face? They hide everything from humans they took from their families but on the other hand they reveal everything to a computer? These adults will therefore have to react suddenly to a colossal enigma and it is assumed that as if by magic they will all behave wonderfully. If they're competent, why haven't they been told the truth? Why not trust them but bet everything on a computer? People are abandoning their families and they don't even know why. And 4 of them died without ever knowing what they had gotten themselves into, without knowing who killed them and without even seeing what they were supposed to study. In short, lives wasted for nothing! Stanley Kubrick is like many so-called giants in this world: vastly overrated. This film transpires the lack of consideration for human life and reveals that Stanley Kubrick was not someone mentally balanced (just like Steven Spielberg, by the way). I'm delighted to be done with this film and its sequel which, moreover, is out of phase with its predecessor on several points.
i love 2001, i bought the first blu ray on copy when it came out. I still call it a masterpiece. and yes you cannot stop watching lol. P.S. Gonna go see it at the 50th anniversary in theatres.

"2001: A Space Odyssey" has been my favorite film of all time ever since I first saw it at the drive-in during the summer of 1968, when I was all of nine years old. The movie completely changed my Universe. I consider it the purest expression of cinematic art ever made.
What really strikes me about 2001 is the fact that Kubrick puts so much care and detail into the pictures and how they tell the story that any dialogue there is is to show how characters interact. Notice that unlike 90 percent of movies today the characters DON'T go around basically yelling the plot out loud? The closest to this is the BBC news report. There's one scene that I always hold up as an example as to why this movie is a prime example of such a method of storytelling. There's a shot of a Pan am spaceship, then it cuts inside to the infamous "floating pen". Then we see a few more shots that show us what's new in the year 2001, and why space travel has been revolutionized. For a start, we learn with a sole shot that Pan Am now services in space. Then in another, we see the interior of the vessel and it looks little different than an airplane. We also can tell that gravity is selective- someone walking while a pen floats. That's just a few, but this is why very few sci-fi movies have lived up to 2001.
I watched this movie a week ago and I went in thinking I would love it, because many people told me that they almost fell asleep watching it and I love slow movies and because of the critical praise it’s gotten. When I watched it I wasn’t really bored, I just felt like I was dreaming without closing my eyes, I can’t describe the feeling any better than that, but it was something I definitely never experienced before. This movie blew my mind because there are so many great things about it and in my opinion nothing bad. It looks more realistic than most movies coming out today, the use of music is just perfect and it gave me an experience I’ll never forget. 2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the best movies ever made
Thanks Chris. Most of your 1.2 million subscribers will probably have heard of this film but never watched it. This is a good use of your "power"! This was released in 1968 - one year BEFORE we landed on the moon! The special effects - all practical - were amazing and influenced ALL of the classic sci-fi that followed - including Star Wars and Alien. As an 11-year-old watching BBC 2 in the early 1980s, I was captivated ... I got very emotional when HAL was being turned off - I didn't even know about the term "artificial intelligence" or the debate surrounding it .. it just seemed clear that a life was being taken. The end of the movie was perplexing - I was weeping with frustration at not being able to figure it out as the credits rolled ... not knowing that it was ok to be perplexed by this film!
2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the best films ever. Just the experience of this film is jaw dropping. I'm disappointing at the fact that I never got to go see the re-release in theaters. I love watching older movies in the cinema. In September of last year, I saw Close Encounters Of The Third Kind in the theater, and it was an amazing experience. Keep up the good work Chris! You're still one of my favorite you tubers!
2001 was the reason i started studying film directing. It was the first movie i wanted to read more about. To find out what Kubrick meant, what he wanted us to feel. It has a huge part in my life and my future.
This was an amazing film, way ahead of it's time and I think it'll always be seen a product which would be cherished by people to come as the film fulfills predictions.
I just showed "2001" to my younger brother for his first viewing. The 4K UHD looks stellar, and the HDR colors are a sight to behold. He couldn't believe the film was so old, a testament to Kubrick's cinematography and timeless effects. When the film started and he heard that famous classical music score, he exclaimed "THIS movie is where THAT comes from?!" I cracked up 🤣 I was worried he may not appreciate the slow and methodical pacing... but the sound design drew him in. I'd forgotten how unsettling the chant music is, or the astronaut's breathing is during the HAL sequence. He commented that this felt like an A24 film, being that it's mysterious and unsettling and creative. Then the Stargate sequence started, and I asked if he was ready for a trip. He was so confused yet enthralled by it all. When Dave landed in his final destination, the room, my brother kept yelling "Who is that?! Wait that's still Dave?!?! What is going on lol" Then the final shot showed the Star Child, with the music blaring, and he was bewildered. "What the f×÷+ does this all mean!!??" LOL it was the perfect response. Now he's off watching TH-cam analysis and asking me questions... it was so cool sharing this mesmerizing film with a new person who hadn't been spoiled to its plot. I'm 15 years old, I also watched this when I was 13. And I friggin loved it. Iv'e seen it more times then I can count. I'm going to go watch the 50th year anniversary remastered edition of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey on Sunday & I can't fucking wait to watch this masterpiece on glorious 70mm.
I really liked 2001, but Interstellar is my 2001 in terms of overall experience with the film. It has so much raw humanity, and the physics is actually pretty good - esp. near the end when they play around with the concept of time becoming variable and constructing, essentially, a linear superposition of states.
Saw this in the Cinerama theatre (the Prince Edward Theater) in London's Soho in '68. I would have been about 13 at the time. And no movie, before or since has made an impact on me like 2001, did. Literally changed my life. Got me reading Sci-fi, books on science and philosophy, and have been doing so ever since. Still my gold standard for movies. Love that the influence still ligers on in movies...the first 20 or so minutes, are effectively a silent movie. Compare to the start of Wall-E. The rotating sets... see Inception "corridor sequence" (And yes. I am aware we have seen that trick before, Fred Astaire dancing up the walls and across the ceiling to name but one)
Just one other point. A common criticism is that the human characters are so bland and mechanical... of course they are. That I'm sure was entirely deliberate, The case can be made that the most "human" character in the movie is Hal "Him"self. He/it is the character who, against the odds, makes the crucial mistake, and then guiltily tries to cover this error up. Exhibiting pride, hubris, and then murderous intent. Could this be what we end up with if we ever DO create an actual AI? Can't help but think that that is what Kubrick might have thought.
I've seen the film like two times already and this was my opinion when I watched it for the first and second time. First Time: I sometimes thought that the film was about an astronaut traveling in time to 2001 to see the future but boy I was wrong. I've seen it on HBO Max and wanted to know what the film was about. The beginning was good but it started to get boring then when the plot kept progressing to the end, it started to make no sense and immediately I was bored watching it that I really wanted the film to end. Second Time: Rewatching it for the second time, I understand why it's regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. The cinematography, characters, score and visuals was 100% breathtaking that it made me love it. It also tells the story not by dialogue but also camera movements. This film is definitely a masterpiece and one of my favorites. It's worth watching and for anyone that is a fan of science fiction, I'd recommend this.
I just saw this movie for the first time today and my brain is absolutely just melted. You’re right too I was almost falling asleep to the music, I was almost bored at the pace, and then suddenly a quiet attentiveness pops in my mind and I stopped counting the seconds between shots. Almost unwillingly glued to it. It felt truly religious.
I cannot agree with you more, Chris. This film is utterly hypnotizing, and I've yet to experience that with any other movie. Although it's not one of my personal favorites, 2001 is definitely one of the best films I've ever seen, and it took me a few viewings to get to that point.

I'm 13 and just finished watching it a couple of minutes ago and I absolutely loved it! It was extremely well done! Though I did notice the pacing and sound design was very slow but it is so amazing! Every visual on the screen always has something for you to look at! I started it just a couple of days ago late at night, and it definitely put me to sleep. But I decided to finish it up this morning when I was 100% awake and really made me love after re-watching a couple of scenes! I guess my mindset is a bit different for other kids my age but I loved it without a doubt. It's gonna stay stuck in my head for the next week for it's mind-bending ending. But I will have to give it an A+!!!
I saw Dullea and Lockwood at Megacon today so it was cool seeing these two together after all of these years. The cinematography of this film really sticks with me as outstanding.
I saw 2001 when it first came out when I was 13 and it's easily the best movie going experience of my life. A large, curved screen, a great sound system--I was rivetted from beginning to end. I have never found it boring but then again I saw it under optimal conditions, not on a VHS tape.
I saw this movie in a college film course and loved it. The visuals for the time were good and the soundtrack is iconic. I think it also helps that I like Sci Fi movies but I think this is not a movie everyone will like or understand.
I wish Arthur Clarke would also be mentioned every time this film is talked about.... It is the greatest collaboration between the prose and celluloid... It's like a poem composed for a master canvas and both having different journeys to reach the same interpretation...
I remember sitting down looking at the credits for 5 minutes after it had ended. It is truly a perfect film. I remember a quote by Scott saying that this movie was a blessing and a curse because every other great sci fi film afterwards will be forever in its shadow.
Saw it in a 70 mm theater at the age of twelve. Was the most profound experience of my entire childhood. I guess blue ray on at least a 55 inch screen is the best someone could do now.
Shining was also quite hypnotizing too. I always remember when I had a first glimpse of it. I was young and at someone's house. They had cable and I didn't. The movie really caught my attention with it's weird music and slow shots. While adults kept talking, I was quiet and really drawn to it. Also, Gaspar Noe's movies use visual and sound techniques such as infrasound which kind of hypnotize you. Of course the best way to experience it is in theater. I realized that when I saw Climax, when I walked out of it I felt tipsy (yet being sober), just like the characters hangover at the end... Now I wonder how it it to watch some of his other films (Enter the void, Irreversible) on a big screen.

It wasn't banned, Kubrick pulled it voluntarily because tabloid papers were reporting that the film was responsible for (as you say) a spate of copycat crimes, he lived in the UK and for that association his family received threats of violence. That concerned him enough to prevent its release on home media in the UK for a long time (until two years after his death to be precise). Before it's re-release in 2001, I remember people during the early 90's getting hold of copies claiming it was this film so awesome it was forbidden by the authorities from the public ever seeing it. It sort of got that reputation as forbidden fruit. Kubrick went as far to have a venue sued by Warner for screening it (even though every university at the time seemed to have a shagged out 35mm print of it anyway). Kubrick effectively banned it himself. Impressive he had that much sway over Warner Bros really. I like it, but it's actually my least favourite Kubrick film of note. I get the impression most like it simply for its iconography (mainly why I enjoy it too) and how cool they think Alex is as an anti-hero. However, it's one film where I wouldn't mind seeing another director take on the book which is a wholly different experience that made me think in a way the film didn't.
I saw this film when it opened in '68. I was 8 years old and it clicked with me. I understood it up to the last 20 mins but the effects from the last segment mesmerized me. It's a powerful film and no other film has ever had the same effect on me and that is why it my favourite film of all time.

This film needs to be watched on an enormous screen, you must be fully immersed in it…it was shot in 72mm, very expensive and few films were made in this…Lawrence of Arabia was one of the ones that did. If you watch this on a 65 inch television, then forget it

When I watched on bluray I thought this is some remastered edition because there's no way that 50 year old movie can look this good.
2001's depiction of space travel set the standard for sci-fi movies for decades. Even today it's rarely matched, and very few movies have exceeded it. Gravity is the only one I can think of offhand that arguably does.

@@oskari7121 In truth, the peak of photographic quality came in the 1950's. There are incredibly detailed photographs from the Great Depression. The problem was, film still degraded with use, and we got really lucky that effotts have been made to preserve this movie until the digital age.

There is no remake because it is absolutely puzzling, confusing, and remarkably well made. It is so puzzling that nobody can remake it because they have no clue what it is about. They also do not dare remaking it because it is already so well made and timeless.

In HD, this film looks like a modern film. It's beautiful.
No other movie has shown the emptiness and terror one would feel being alone in space like this movie does. It’s amazing.
The greatest moviegoing experience of my life: seeing this film in a large, packed theater in New York, on a huge screen, when it first came out in 1968. Given how 2001 still awes people today, imagine its effect on a sci-fi-loving teen back then who was totally unprepared for what he encountered.
You're very lucky! I watched for the first time a couple days ago and kept thinking about how amazed s 60s audience would be.
Same for me. I was a teenager into SF in a big way, and was totally blown away. It remains probably my favourite movie. And don't forget the music - as a reviewer commented at the time - who would have ever connected the Blue Danube with deep space? But as usual with Kubrik's musical choices, it was absolutely perfect.
My dad took me to a theater in Times Square when it was released in 1968. We left at intermission. Do you know if they opened the side curtains during the time of the time journey?
I first saw it at age 5 in 1968 at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood! Cinerama is NOT the same thing as IMAX! (Three projectors and a Super Wide screen!)
It was mind blowing for someone who never saw anything like that!

I envy you. I would do anything to be able to watch it on a large screen in Super Panavision 70mm! The Mitchel Super 65mm and Super 70mm cameras are in museums and no longer work. Most of them have been destroyed. It would be great if some of these cameras were reassembled or restored to funtioning. There is plenty of books from the 2001 series to supply more material. However, Stanley Kubrick and Sir Arthur C. Clarke are dead.
Kubrick was never an entertainer. He gave us experiences. Experiences with many many layers.

It's always nice when directors make people experience the movie rather than simply watch it. What they really meant is to give you an experience rather than just entertainment.
2001 is entertaining, however, it goes way beyond that and it feels awesome, an experience.
I think a nice analogy is chocolate, yes, chocolate. Milk chocolate is always gonna be fun (entertaining) but it sometimes can get boring and repetitive (too much sugar maybe?) then Dark chocolate comes in handy, it's fun (entertaining) and all but it leaves you a different taste in your mouth, it gives you something else to experience.

I watch 2001: A Space Odessey, almost every night. I have been doing it many years. Two hours before I fall before my time time for sleep, I start playing it. I have worn out three VHS cassettes, and one DVD player. I am finally getting a blu-ray player and the first blu-ray is already picked out.

The blu-ray copy came with a digital copy I can download. I am going to record the digital copy onto a flash drive and use the USB port in the blu-ray player to run the movie every night. This will keep the wear on the mechanical parts to a minimum. I am going to put the disk in tonight. But tomorrow, I am putting in the USB copy I will be making.

This is the most BORING movie ever made. Well, While I'm open to slow pace movies - you know, some of the deep and meaningful European movies for instance - I have to confess I have never seen a more boring movie in my life.

As to "BEAUTY", as mentioned by another amateur critique here, well, I guess "beauty" is in the eyes of the beholder as the proverb goes. Personally, I found it, err... not so much ugly (apart from the growling apes) but ... duh... boring beyond belief.
How on earth the current rating of IMDb shows 8.4/10 beats the sh*t out of me.

I really liked the beginning of Ex-Machina, because it had a very interesting set-up. I thought it was going to ask and even try to answer some very big questions, but it didn't. The film disappointed me after the interesting set-up, especially the ending.
It had great potential, but a mediocre execution, like Annihilation from the same director.
Interstellar might be one of the most overrated films of all time. I'll tell you why after I've watched Star Trek: Wrath of Khan.

This is the movie that I saw as a kid who loved Star Wars and wanted to watch more space stuff. It was the first instance that had me question "who directed this?" This was the movie that made me understand how some directors and cinematographers are just on a different level. Nobody was like Kubrick.

I remember that four years ago when I saw this film for the first time. I thought it was boring as fuck and literally fell asleep back then.
Few months ago I couldn't get to sleep so I was like "hey I should rewatch 2001 because at least it can make me sleep because of that boredom". Well it failed because I watched the whole thing and couldn't sleep the whole night because I was so blown away from what I saw.
There are movie you just dont like at a first viewing. Some times you like them at one watch. Movies like 2001,Brazil,Blade Runner,mother,etc. Then you remember great things about them (Metaphors,Allegories,Satirical elements,easter eggs,homages to other movies,etc) it's fun to listen to other people's opinion to feel the need to rewatch them. It's never good to watch them once.

I did too. Never like Harvey dent,Subplot of Lao or the third act which i found anticlimatic...after rewatching it several times still dont think is Da best movie ever (Have problem with some exposition)but i think is a good one with metaphors,ideas,homages....and its also strongly influential.
I am still amazed this movie came out in 1968. If it weren't for the obviously old sound quality, you could tell me this movie came out last year and I would likely believe you. The themes are still super relevant, the visual effects and overall direction are mind-boggling, and the characters do not feel like products of the time. This film is quite literally timeless.
The cinematography in this is so beautiful. From the colour correction/grading to the shots.

@Disney is the Devil The Shining is in my opinion #2 on the list under 2001. Don't get me wrong I love Clockwork but I've never compulsively kept in on repeat for days and weeks and even months at a time like I have for The Shining. and no...that's not an exaggeration. I've even watched it on mute around 30-40 times. There are only certain movies I can do that with and The Shining is one of them. It's one of the most soothing, rhythmic and visual films ever. It is timeless and never gets old. Even watching it on mute I can still feel that movie.

HAL didn't kill the crew because it won in chess. HAL killed the crew because they weren't supposed to know about the mission details and it read their lips saying they would shut HAL down...if HAL was shut down the mission would never be completed...they explain this in the film.
The only reason they wanted to shut HAL down was because it misdiagnosed the fault of the communication satellite. They thought HAL was faulty and not up to the task on hand to continue the mission. HAL malfunctioned because he was instructed to lie something impossible for an A.I. This was explained by Dr. Shandra (HAL maker) in the sequel 2010 another superb movie.

HAL had crisis because of conflicting orders - keep the mission secret (even from Pool and Bowman), while his basic programing was to be entirely truthful. He tried to solve this by severing connection to Earth (which he saw as something like his watcher and consciousnes), thus the AE-35 malfunction. When his plan was discovered (on Earth they made the settings of the other HAL comp the same as the one aboard Destiny and saw what this did to it), HAL in his attempt to escape detection tried to prevent another replacement of AE-35, and did it by killing Frank who was trying to do the job.

The sfx hold up to this day. I saw 2010 first as a child, then I watched 2001. Then I read the books. Then I re-watched 2001 when I got a bit older and understood it better
2001 is epic. 2010 was different, but it sought to explain what happened and I read where Kubrick gave his blessing to Peter Hyams. Roy Scheider was the perfect casting choice.

Yes, but that doesn’t warrant repeated viewings. Eventually you have to compare it to other movies you could be watching instead. I have never been a huge fan of outer space. I prefer other settings. Even though I appreciate how good this looks for 1968 that alone is not enough to get me to watch it again. I also have about 83 other movies on my watchlist that I’ve never watched, but that didn’t stop me from watching Banshees of Inisherin 5x so I can’t say that’s the only reason I have no interest in watching it again.
My best friend in high school felt hypnotized by the movie in 1975 when he saw it for the first time, specifically by the Stargate scene. He could not start the car afterward until he stopped shaking.

I was forced to watch it in film school, and I HATED it the first time I saw it. But, over time, I have come to hold it to the same esteem many other film fans do.

Kubrick is the most talented and gifted director of the past 100 years. I aspire in all of my work to follow his example in cinematic art, because of any director, he truly made his films visual masterpieces. Every single shot mattered and had a true purpose and were so perfectly placed.

There are a lot of screens which such a slow pace that it becomes annoying (for example when he goes out of the ship in the smaller ship to rescue his colleague. The movements were so slow). Kubrick could've just made those kind of scenes faster. And well, I remember I had other flaws in mind (althoguh they were more like details, my main problem with it is the pace), but they aren't coming to my mind now :P
So yeah, basically the pace. I'm not saying it's a horrible or really bad movie. I'm sure the pace didn't affect the experience for many people, but did kind of ruined it for me. I do like the cinematography, it's really good, specially considering the date, and how ahead of its time it is, and also the general message or guist of the movie. I'm just saying the pace is really off. Not a bad movie, by any means, but not a masterpiece either
Hypnotising is a perfect word to describe this film. Watched it for the first time over a month ago, and I really did feel like I was in a trance all throughout the length of the film, it was an incredibly unique experience.
Finally, I was able to watch this movie. When I was a teenager I was shocked to hear people say that this movie was Star Wars level of grandeur and doubted it. I had looked at it thereafter and I was comforted in my doubt: it does not reach Star wars. Afterwards I learned that there was a longer version than the one I had and I looked for it. I finally found it, watched the movie again (just today) and am now convinced of my verdict: this movie does not reach Star wars. When we create a work that we are going to show to all kinds of different people, we must worry about the construction of our work and have something strong to offer, so that our work is worthy of the highest praise. There is a lot of bad taste in this movie. Kubrick poses a lot of things, he decrees what he wants without logical construction. In this movie there are too many facts that happen without any logical reason. And for bad taste, here is an example: how can adults presented as competent and sensible send 5 other very competent adults on a very critical, unprecedented mission, without even telling them what they are likely to face? They hide everything from humans they took from their families but on the other hand they reveal everything to a computer? These adults will therefore have to react suddenly to a colossal enigma and it is assumed that as if by magic they will all behave wonderfully. If they're competent, why haven't they been told the truth? Why not trust them but bet everything on a computer? People are abandoning their families and they don't even know why. And 4 of them died without ever knowing what they had gotten themselves into, without knowing who killed them and without even seeing what they were supposed to study.
In short, lives wasted for nothing! Stanley Kubrick is like many so-called giants in this world: vastly overrated. This film transpires the lack of consideration for human life and reveals that Stanley Kubrick was not someone mentally balanced (just like Steven Spielberg, by the way). I'm delighted to be done with this film and its sequel which, moreover, is out of phase with its predecessor on several points.
i love 2001, i bought the first blu ray on copy when it came out. I still call it a masterpiece. and yes you cannot stop watching lol.

What really strikes me about 2001 is the fact that Kubrick puts so much care and detail into the pictures and how they tell the story that any dialogue there is is to show how characters interact. Notice that unlike 90 percent of movies today the characters DON'T go around basically yelling the plot out loud? The closest to this is the BBC news report.
There's one scene that I always hold up as an example as to why this movie is a prime example of such a method of storytelling. There's a shot of a Pan am spaceship, then it cuts inside to the infamous "floating pen". Then we see a few more shots that show us what's new in the year 2001, and why space travel has been revolutionized. For a start, we learn with a sole shot that Pan Am now services in space. Then in another, we see the interior of the vessel and it looks little different than an airplane. We also can tell that gravity is selective- someone walking while a pen floats. That's just a few, but this is why very few sci-fi movies have lived up to 2001.

Fidget Spinner Movie LIES!
I watched this movie a week ago and I went in thinking I would love it, because many people told me that they almost fell asleep watching it and I love slow movies and because of the critical praise it’s gotten. When I watched it I wasn’t really bored, I just felt like I was dreaming without closing my eyes, I can’t describe the feeling any better than that, but it was something I definitely never experienced before. This movie blew my mind because there are so many great things about it and in my opinion nothing bad. It looks more realistic than most movies coming out today, the use of music is just perfect and it gave me an experience I’ll never forget. 2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the best movies ever made

The special effects - all practical - were amazing and influenced ALL of the classic sci-fi that followed - including Star Wars and Alien.
As an 11-year-old watching BBC 2 in the early 1980s, I was captivated ... I got very emotional when HAL was being turned off - I didn't even know about the term "artificial intelligence" or the debate surrounding it .. it just seemed clear that a life was being taken.
The end of the movie was perplexing - I was weeping with frustration at not being able to figure it out as the credits rolled ... not knowing that it was ok to be perplexed by this film!
2018: A Chris Odyssey
2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the best films ever. Just the experience of this film is jaw dropping. I'm disappointing at the fact that I never got to go see the re-release in theaters. I love watching older movies in the cinema. In September of last year, I saw Close Encounters Of The Third Kind in the theater, and it was an amazing experience. Keep up the good work Chris! 2001 was the reason i started studying film directing. It was the first movie i wanted to read more about. To find out what Kubrick meant, what he wanted us to feel. It has a huge part in my life and my future.
They're remastering it and it will be in theaters soon in 70mm. The trailer is spooky HD.

Hypnotism is absolutely the correct description. And the monoliths are awe inspiring.
This was an amazing film, way ahead of it's time and I think it'll always be seen a product which would be cherished by people to come as the film fulfills predictions.

I just showed "2001" to my younger brother for his first viewing. The 4K UHD looks stellar, and the HDR colors are a sight to behold. He couldn't believe the film was so old, a testament to Kubrick's cinematography and timeless effects.
When the film started and he heard that famous classical music score, he exclaimed "THIS movie is where THAT comes from?!" I cracked up 🤣
I was worried he may not appreciate the slow and methodical pacing... but the sound design drew him in. I'd forgotten how unsettling the chant music is, or the astronaut's breathing is during the HAL sequence.
He commented that this felt like an A24 film, being that it's mysterious and unsettling and creative.
Then the Stargate sequence started, and I asked if he was ready for a trip. He was so confused yet enthralled by it all. When Dave landed in his final destination, the room, my brother kept yelling "Who is that?! Wait that's still Dave?!?! What is going on lol"
Then the final shot showed the Star Child, with the music blaring, and he was bewildered. "What the f×÷+ does this all mean!!??" LOL it was the perfect response.
Now he's off watching TH-cam analysis and asking me questions... it was so cool sharing this mesmerizing film with a new person who hadn't been spoiled to its plot. I shared your link, Chris, as part of the post-op for him 😀

I'm going to go watch the 50th year anniversary remastered edition of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey on Sunday & I can't fucking wait to watch this masterpiece on glorious 70mm.

I really liked 2001, but Interstellar is my 2001 in terms of overall experience with the film. It has so much raw humanity, and the physics is actually pretty good - esp. near the end when they play around with the concept of time becoming variable and constructing, essentially, a linear superposition of states.
Even people who don't know shit about cinema will be able to appreciate the bone to satellite cut in the movie, it was just so cosmic and meaningful
Saw this in the Cinerama theatre (the Prince Edward Theater) in London's Soho in '68. I would have been about 13 at the time. And no movie, before or since has made an impact on me like 2001, did. Literally changed my life. Got me reading Sci-fi, books on science and philosophy, and have been doing so ever since. Still my gold standard for movies.
Love that the influence still ligers on in movies...the first 20 or so minutes, are effectively a silent movie. Compare to the start of Wall-E.

Just one other point. A common criticism is that the human characters are so bland and mechanical... of course they are. That I'm sure was entirely deliberate,
The case can be made that the most "human" character in the movie is Hal "Him"self. He/it is the character who, against the odds, makes the crucial mistake, and then guiltily tries to cover this error up. Exhibiting pride, hubris, and then murderous intent. Could this be what we end up with if we ever DO create an actual AI? Can't help but think that that is what Kubrick might have thought.

I've seen the film like two times already and this was my opinion when I watched it for the first and second time.
First Time: I sometimes thought that the film was about an astronaut traveling in time to 2001 to see the future but boy I was wrong. I've seen it on HBO Max and wanted to know what the film was about. The beginning was good but it started to get boring then when the plot kept progressing to the end, it started to make no sense and immediately I was bored watching it that I really wanted the film to end.
Second Time: Rewatching it for the second time, I understand why it's regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. The cinematography, characters, score and visuals was 100% breathtaking that it made me love it. It also tells the story not by dialogue but also camera movements. This film is definitely a masterpiece and one of my favorites. It's worth watching and for anyone that is a fan of science fiction, I'd recommend this.
I watched 2001 when I was about 8 or 9 and like it a lot, then when I was about 14 rewatched it. I adore this masterpiece.
One of my all-time favourites. Another film that sort of hypnotises you is Melancholia (which I also loved).

I just saw this movie for the first time today and my brain is absolutely just melted.
You’re right too I was almost falling asleep to the music, I was almost bored at the pace, and then suddenly a quiet attentiveness pops in my mind and I stopped counting the seconds between shots. Almost unwillingly glued to it. It felt truly religious.

I cannot agree with you more, Chris. This film is utterly hypnotizing, and I've yet to experience that with any other movie. Although it's not one of my personal favorites, 2001 is definitely one of the best films I've ever seen, and it took me a few viewings to get to that point.
I had the privilege to watch this masterpiece in the cinema this evening, and that feeling if hypnotism was never more real than when I was watching it on thr big screen

He made it so consciously because he knew that if he did not, this video would not be taken seriously or considered worthy. 2001 is the best cinematic experience of all time to come. My absolute favourite of all time. Hope I can watch it on big screen some day.
I'm 13 and just finished watching it a couple of minutes ago and I absolutely loved it! It was extremely well done! Though I did notice the pacing and sound design was very slow but it is so amazing! Every visual on the screen always has something for you to look at! I started it just a couple of days ago late at night, and it definitely put me to sleep. But I decided to finish it up this morning when I was 100% awake and really made me love after re-watching a couple of scenes! I guess my mindset is a bit different for other kids my age but I loved it without a doubt. It's gonna stay stuck in my head for the next week for it's mind-bending ending. But I will have to give it an A+!!!

I saw Dullea and Lockwood at Megacon today so it was cool seeing these two together after all of these years. The cinematography of this film really sticks with me as outstanding.
I saw 2001 when it first came out when I was 13 and it's easily the best movie going experience of my life. A large, curved screen, a great sound system--I was rivetted from beginning to end. I have never found it boring but then again I saw it under optimal conditions, not on a VHS tape.
I saw this movie in a college film course and loved it. The visuals for the time were good and the soundtrack is iconic. I think it also helps that I like Sci Fi movies but I think this is not a movie everyone will like or understand.
On a belated note, I am saddened and horrified by the recent events/allegations over at channel awesome and am happy that Chris decided to leave.
Check out Stalker by the great Andrei tarkovsky. That's another film that will put you in a dreamlike trance. Absolute gorgeous film.
I wish Arthur Clarke would also be mentioned every time this film is talked about.... It is the greatest collaboration between the prose and celluloid... It's like a poem composed for a master canvas and both having different journeys to reach the same interpretation...
I remember sitting down looking at the credits for 5 minutes after it had ended. It is truly a perfect film. I remember a quote by Scott saying that this movie was a blessing and a curse because every other great sci fi film afterwards will be forever in its shadow.

Saw it in a 70 mm theater at the age of twelve. Was the most profound experience of my entire childhood. I guess blue ray on at least a 55 inch screen is the best someone could do now.
The fact this was made SEVERAL years ago is AMAZING! If I didn’t know any better I would have guessed the film was originally made in the 1990s.
Shining was also quite hypnotizing too. I always remember when I had a first glimpse of it. I was young and at someone's house. They had cable and I didn't. The movie really caught my attention with it's weird music and slow shots. While adults kept talking, I was quiet and really drawn to it. Also, Gaspar Noe's movies use visual and sound techniques such as infrasound which kind of hypnotize you. Of course the best way to experience it is in theater. I realized that when I saw Climax, when I walked out of it I felt tipsy (yet being sober), just like the characters hangover at the end... Now I wonder how it it to watch some of his other films (Enter the void, Irreversible) on a big screen.

1997residente okay thank you I just recently read the book it's very good highly recommend it.
It wasn't banned, Kubrick pulled it voluntarily because tabloid papers were reporting that the film was responsible for (as you say) a spate of copycat crimes, he lived in the UK and for that association his family received threats of violence. That concerned him enough to prevent its release on home media in the UK for a long time (until two years after his death to be precise). Before it's re-release in 2001, I remember people during the early 90's getting hold of copies claiming it was this film so awesome it was forbidden by the authorities from the public ever seeing it. It sort of got that reputation as forbidden fruit. Kubrick went as far to have a venue sued by Warner for screening it (even though every university at the time seemed to have a shagged out 35mm print of it anyway).
Kubrick effectively banned it himself. Impressive he had that much sway over Warner Bros really.
I like it, but it's actually my least favourite Kubrick film of note. I get the impression most like it simply for its iconography (mainly why I enjoy it too) and how cool they think Alex is as an anti-hero. However, it's one film where I wouldn't mind seeing another director take on the book which is a wholly different experience that made me think in a way the film didn't.
I saw this film when it opened in '68. I was 8 years old and it clicked with me. I understood it up to the last 20 mins but the effects from the last segment mesmerized me. It's a powerful film and no other film has ever had the same effect on me and that is why it my favourite film of all time.
Kubrick is to movies what Tool is to music... A timeless ambiguous experience

This film needs to be watched on an enormous screen, you must be fully immersed in it…it was shot in 72mm, very expensive and few films were made in this…Lawrence of Arabia was one of the ones that did. If you watch this on a 65 inch television, then forget it
