I guess they had an instrumental version of what would later become "Cross of Thorns" and played it as a part of Tony´s guitar solo. Wether they originally planned to expand it to a full blown song or it was intended to be just a short interlude in the live solo-part and they later thought, that these riff would be worth to explore further, of course I don´t know.
