@@Loudtvmetal can't waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaait :D BTW great interview and great questions! Hope someone asks him whether he maybe regretted the decision to not make Ghost Reveries concept album in the end :D Cheers!
if you listen to the grand conjuration, he wrote all of it pretty much, and it always amazes me how he comes up with stuff like that, it's in F lol, and those riffs he just wrote from improvs
It hit me right away, but the third time and every subsequent time it hit me even harder. And I know that I will be listening to that album for a long time.
It really must be listened with headphones. Also, listen to the last Blood Incantation album, "Absolute Elsewhere", the only album at this level who got out recently.
Opeth is so absurdly legendary. Mikael is a literal genius, and he’s shockingly humbled for talented and educated he is. The music, the arrangements, the vocals, the lyrics, the live performance… just a perfect band.
I was kind of upset when Fred came in mainly because I was such a huge fan of Peter Lindgren, but now I'm so happy that Fred was the one to take his spot, his style is perfect for the new era of Opeth
It was the first Opeth record I've heard. At that time, I didn't like clean vocals in metal, I was like 16. It was shortly before Deliverance/Damnation came out. They changed the way I looked at music and made my taste mature very quickly while still being a college kid.
At least in Opeths discog. Im very similar to Mike in that Im a big prog rock guy so most of my top 10 is progressive rock albums (though Opeth themselves never got to that perfect masterpiece tier in their progrock era. They came closest with Pale for my money)
@@Loudtvmetal Thats my top two as well. Though they're virtually tied with Watershed, & Hannes Grossmann's first solo record and Omnivium which he also wrote most of and did all of the song structures for. (Hannes is also a godtier prog death composer like Mike/former Necrophagist drummer)
I don't get this Blackwater Park praise. It's great and all, but Still Life and Ghost of Perdition are so, so much better imo. And Pale Communion is the best from the 70s prog rock phase.
@@Loudtvmetal Tbh, not really a surprise for me, if we look at his manners & intelligence over the years.. But, thanks to your great questions, finally we get clearer about it! 👏🏻🤟🏻
Great interview! The guys seemed very relaxed in these last couple interviews. I think what Fredrik said about Waltteri bringing a breath of fresh air to the band maybe affected their personalities a little too, for the better of course hehe Also, I'm very excited about the new record! The two singles already sound better than the last album in my opinion. Thanks for the interview! 🔥🤘
I really appreciate Fredrik's input. While Mikael may be the creative genius behind Opeth, it's feels like Fredrik is very keyed into that vision and really understands it.
Great interview and camera is funny 🎥👌🏖️ At least to say the new album is good as any other album when it comes to diving into it by time and becoming greater to listen to. Maybe the best in that game
@11:15 Just asking because I am curious about this matter. How come Mendez then don't writing credits? Where is the line going before you get credited for song writing?
As Poland was mentioned, we heartily welcome Mikael Åkerfeldt to stand with us together... ...in a queue the municipal office to obtain the citizenship.
Прослушал уже много раз. Крайне прогрессивный и авангардный альбом. Но предыдущий мне понравился намного больше! Немного устаю от этого нагромождения музыкальных конструкций.
It’s crazy if you are Gen Z what shit arises once people die. I have been overwhelmed and entertained at the antics of my Grandparents and extended family once someone dumps it on you after they past.
When you're responsible for a legendary album named Blackwater Park, that contained some of the most iconic gutturals of all time. The expectation would be a continuance throughout subsequent releases...
Great interview! I must say.. I’m not a drummer, and drums are probably the last thing I take notice of, as I love vocals, and guitars first… but for me, Axenrot sounded like a truly great drummer, and I hate that it seems they talk like as if waltteri is far better than any drummer they’ve had before! But as I said, I’m no expert on these things 😅 haha
The interview helped to clarify the main concept behind the album. I believe that with this album Opeth is turning back to confort zone,so it seemingly being simple music by using the oldest stragegy and formula from the past. It seems that Opeth is showing to us how the band has got achieve so far in terms of music evolution and development as band. They haven't missed out on making simple music despite the advancement progressivism their music has turned out right now.
@Loudtvmetal I pointed out "comfort zone" in compare to what they've done so far. Then, they have experimented everything possible in extreme music they can.I wouldn't say it's such a very simplory music, but maybe lessen on merging more progressive elements into music, like they have approached constantly in their previous albums.
At the end of the day it comes down to taste I think, but yeah, still life is the album that I listen to from beginning to end almost every single day. It’s a masterpiece

I gave it a listen and it was very boring and cheese for me. Its like they are recycling their music really sad to see this happening. They should have just stop putting out albums I would respect that they are all rich already. I guess its not my business they can do whatever. This happens to every band over and over the same thing happens. They get rich and then they just milk their fans but they should just take a break if they cant make inspiring music.
These guys do the best interviews, calm, stick to the point and still able to be funny.
Complexity of this album surpasses my expectations
Yes it is complex
Hell yeeeee😅😅😅😅😅😅
The world's best band - for time and eternity
I love how Mikael and Fredrik complement each other and don't interrupt or talk over the other.
Gentlemen !
they change "genre" with every decade, i think this album marks a new era for the band
They change genre within every song 😅

I wouldn't say they change genres. Rather they change their style I'd say.
They were amazing live last month, the wait's been killing me.
Did they play new stuff ?
@Loudtvmetal Just Paragraph 1 and 3!
@ChrisLT thx
I have tickets for March next year in Glasgow - Opeth give us an amazing delivery every time.
You guys have arguably had three of the best drummers in the entire metal scene for the last three decades
Indeed
Akerfeldt's voice is like the metal version of David Attenboro. He just relaxes me.
Absolutely wild that Mikael came up with an entire, full demo for the TLWAT album, what a genius!!🤯
Pure artist
Yeah even the drums? He wrote them all? Insane.
if you listen to the grand conjuration, he wrote all of it pretty much, and it always amazes me how he comes up with stuff like that, it's in F lol, and those riffs he just wrote from improvs
He did the drums and bass on Orhid and Morningrise recordings
Haha I just read the TWAT album
ONE take?! ...Goodness!!! ...breathtaking performance, in that case... wow.
Killer
It hit me right away, but the third time and every subsequent time it hit me even harder. And I know that I will be listening to that album for a long time.
Both musicians here are so down to earth. I ordered their new album months ago...now I'm really curious! Great interview, thanks!
Indeed ! Really cool guys
I loved it, his growl was used perfectly. it’s an emotional roller coaster of an album. Best prog album lately.

FELT this! However, this new record really harkens back to Peter's work. I really think this is the closest it has been ever.

Absolutlely agree. I didn't appreciate 'Watershed' until years later because it wasn't Lindgren and Lopez.
This album is the biggest surprise this year. Nothing on this album is predictable

6:50 - didn't even mention Fred's solos (I hope there are some) which are arguably the best bits of Opeth these days.
The solo on Lovelorn Crime is one of the finest solos I've ever heard. Absolute goosebumps
yeah i really liked his hope leaves solo on the live DVD.

From what I’ve heard “a story never told” ends with a very epic guitar solo

How can you record so many parts in different places yet make the song seem so natural? Crazy these days
