CANADIAN HERE WITH SOME COLD WEATHER TIPS: floors are always cold even when the heat's on so get some warm fluffy socks and/or slippers. for outside you'll want a long winter coat rather than a short one bc it keeps wind out better and your thighs get cold faster than most of the rest of your body! also a parka-style hood (with the faux fur) is best for keeping wind out of your face. blanket scarves are your friend and always wear a hat bc when your head is warmer your whole body is warmer. mittens without fingers are better than gloves in extreme cold (you can curl up your hand inside the mitten if your fingertips are numb). skating tights are the warmest tights and you can wear them under any pants--jeans are really cold so definitely wear tights under them when it's below 0 (below 30 in the states I guess). always go for waterproof boots with winter lining (wool or faux fur again) over what's fashionable bc there's nothing worse than wearing uggs, having to walk through slush, and your feet turning into blocks of ice. also make sure your boots have good traction because ice.
for driving: in below 0 weather you need to let your car warm up for a few minutes or the engine will grumble at you when you start driving--this also allows the inside of the car to stop being a fridge before you have to sit in it for any length of time. also if it's snowy you will need at least 15 minutes longer than usual to sweep/scrape off the car (although I guess in the city you'll probably be parked in a parking garage which negates this entire paragraph). also--SNOW TIRES are important. idk if you need them in Chicago but ask some people about that because if it's very snowy/icy then normal tires are extremely dangerous (I live in a part of Canada where it is illegal to not have snow tires on your car from November-March lol).
oh also if it's below -10 C (not sure what that is in Fahrenheit sorry) and you're outside for a while you need to be careful of frostbite; frostbite can be identified by a red patch of skin with a white spot in the centre (usually shows up on your cheeks first) and you should go inside immediately and wash with lukewarm water--if skin is blue or black tinged GO TO THE HOSPITAL.
(lol this paragraph probably isn't necessary sorry if it scares you)
hot drinks and hot soup are obviously excellent. I recommend mixing coffee and hot chocolate together!
and try to find things that you enjoy doing in the cold weather, so you don't hate it! skating, walking in the park (when it's snowy and a reasonable winter temperature like -5 or so the world turns into a wonderland and it's nice to take in), tobogganing, skiing, building a snowman or snow fort, making snow angels (yes these things are still fun to do as an adult, I promise), going for a sleigh ride or checking out a maple tree farm (do they have those in Illinois? I feel like they do), etc.
hope this was somewhat helpful aha

How to survive the cold: electric blankets, hand warmers, layers, always keep a scraper/brush in your car, having tea or coffee in the morning to carry around and keep your hands warm. I live in Wisconsin and we're currently having a blizzard so I'm well versed in the art of staying warm.

"college is designed for you to figure out your way" hahaha in U.S! in Portugal on 9 grade you choose an area (Science Languages Economics or Arts) And you only go to college if you know what you want to do! Our majors are specific if you are going to study biology you study biology (which means that you study what's absolutely necessary for biology) you don't have random classes. it's not possible to be studying history and have a biology class. And it's very hard to change majors

I am a 25 year old who couldn't afford college and was forced to pay out of pocket for yeas in community college taking 1-2 classes as I could afford them. I'm starting my college experience really late compared to many my age. I have changed my major twice and I'm about to do it a third time to anthropology in my junior year. I get so much crap for doing this and if I could help anyone out by saying ITS OKAY TO NOT KNOW I really hope someone takes it to heart. My mom has basically talked down to me about how I handle college but if I'm being honest it's my future and my career so I'm going to explore any avenue I can while I have the chance to do it. Don't follow a major if you are unfulfilled and don't take anyone's path but your own. Do your research and find your place. It will happen! And if you are stressed about it know that most jobs want someone who wears many hats. Take the weird odd jobs, take the classes you are nervous about bc any knowledge is better than none. I started off as a communications major and switched to history and I am slowly transitioning to anthropology. If you aren't interested and getting something out of it you will get lower grades and struggle and not to mention be so so unhappy and unfulfilled. It's your future you get to hand pick for yourself and I think that's something you can't get back if you don't follow your passions.

Cold weather survival kit: blankets, blankets, blankets; lots of layers; Uggs/snow boots/boots designed for winter climates (not fashion boots); always keep a snow-brush/ice-scraper in your car if you have a car; always keep extras gloves, hats, and scarves in your car too. Basically be prepared for any weather at any given time. In Illinois, we can go to snow to 70 degrees in a weekend. I hope you learn to love and appreciate our cold, snowy city :)

I don't know how the weather in Chicago is, but being from PA I suggest getting two coats for cold weather. A pea coat for those windy days, and an actual winter coat for the snowy days, hats, gloves, etc. Staying warm is the main concern.
I started college looking to get a degree in Culinary Arts, after a year and a semester I realized that wasn't the career I thought I wanted. I love to cook and all, but I like being a home cook and not a fast paced restaurant cook. I'm going to be hopefully moving to North Carolina and I'll be transferring to a new college for Graphic Design & Advertising. I already own my own Etsy shop, but I'd like to do more.
Lastly, I hope to move to Austin, TX when I graduate! I've only been to Texas once and I loved it. Hope to visit again soon. 💙

Congrats on all the exciting news! Scoring your dream job right out of college is amazing. Hopefully, I'm as lucky when I graduate next year! I totally understand how you feel about not letting your anxiety stop you from things that excite you. I just got accepted into a semester-long internship/study abroad in London. This will be the longest I've ever been away from home and away from my family and boyfriend. I am terrified, but I knew I would regret it if I didn't take the opportunity. I don't wanna live with that regret even though I know my anxiety will be through the roof for an adjustment period. I'm glad your boyfriend is moving with you! That will make your transition from Austin to Chicago much smoother. Good luck with everything!

Congrats! I graduated in December and it's hard stuff right there! Also, the best way to survive winter is a pair of warm water proof boots (slush is an issue) that you can put on for the outdoors then change into normal shoes once you are inside. You will love having four seasons! Welcome to the Midwest!

Cold weather tips from a Michigander/someone who visits Chicago often: don't go for the cute coat! Get something warm and with a hood (I recommend the long Northface)! Hoods are key! Get a sturdy umbrella, it's not called the Windy City for nothing! Get a bunch of different coats. One for deep winter, one for cooler spring/cooler fall, and one for warmer spring/warmer fall. If you're going somewhere in the cold mornings take a warm beverage like tea or coffee with you. Hmmm heated blankets are also great!
Hope this helps! Very happy for you! 😀

I just graduated last spring and got super lucky that my dream internship turned into my dream job right after. Thankfully mine was only a half hour from where I went to school, so it wasn't as big of a leap, but the post-grad anxieties and fear are just a part of life that I'm still figuring out. Figuring out the balance of adulthood is NOT easy, but going with the flow of everything is just what I'm trying to do. So happy for your successes and congrats on everything! Also SUPER cute hair cut. Short hair is fabulous :).

I totally understand how you feel!! I've moved back and forth from California and Missouri multiple times and I'm not out of high school yet. Tips for the winter is to remember the first winter is the worst/longest. Whether or not it is actually the coldest winter it will feel like it because you are adapting. Remembering this will help keep you going! Also layers! Thermal undershirts and leggings for under your clothes will save your life!

I live outside of Chicago over in Indiana! The weather is as bipolar as it comes. Electric blankets, hot coffee/tea, letting your car warm up before you leave, very warm coats and gloves are a must in the area. Also, make sure your car has blankets and warm stuff in it during the winter. God forbid you get stuck somewhere, you'll be safe and warm while you wait for help! Always be prepared!! :)

  • @thenosyreader5701
    @thenosyreader5701 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I grew up in Chicago! Pretty much all you have to do is layer layer layer! Always wear a scarf and some gloves with your coat. Even a hat. You may feel like a puffy eskimo, but it's so worth it when you consider how warm you are! I usually wear really thin leggings under jeans on the really really cold days and then grab some thick camping socks.

    • @thenosyreader5701
      @thenosyreader5701 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

OOH but also since it's so cold outside, it gets really warm inside. So I advise wearing layers that can be taken off when you're inside. Always take into consideration how much time you're spending outside vs. how much time you're spending inside when getting ready in the mornings. "Lake effect" is huge there. It basically means anything can happen because of Lake Michigan. There can be 3 in. of snow expected and suddenly it's 11 in. with a crazy low windchill. So always be aware of that!

  • @conflictingfox
    @conflictingfox 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Electric blankets are great for cold nights as well as cramps, and people also like filling a big old sock with rice and microwaving that to keep your feet warm in bed or carry around the house/keep on your shoulders to have something warming. I adore your haircut. Good luck in Chicago!

  • @xXToshiFlowerXx

I love in the Chicago land area. So for surviving in cold area drink hot tea or coffee a lot during the winter, get warm clothes for the fall and winter and the earlier part of spring and just bundle up when you go outside during the winter. And be prepared for weather changes because it does get really cold here but it also gets really hot here during the summer. But don't worry about cold weather we actually had a decent winter this year. So you'll be fine ☺️

Cold Weather Tips From Someone in the Chicagoland Area
-Even a lot of Northerners don't realize that you should have two types of shovels, a flat metal one and a curved plastic one. The metal one in good for scraping up packed down icy snow, but it too heavy to be good for moving big piles of the fluffy stuff
-keep a blanket, snow brush, and even a shovel in your car in case of emergency
-buy hot hands! they're kinda like those ice packs that turn cold when you hit them except they're warm
-If you have a fireplace, don't forget to open the flue! If it's closed the smoke can't get out, make sure to close afterwards so cold air can't get in
-If you have to walk on an ice patch bend your knees slightly, this lowers you center of gravity and makes it easier to catch yourself
-make sure your shoes have good grips
-make sure to salt your driveway/porch/front walk, and investing in a shaker is worth it
-it gets DRY so makes sure to use chapstick and moisturize (sleeping with a humidifier is good too)
-and most importantly, NEVER EVER EVER! forget to put marshmallows in your cocoa

Regan! When I graduated I moved across the country from Cali to Ohio with my boyfriend and I was scared of snow! Buy winter clothes when you get to Chicago! They clothes you can buy in Texas (for me, Cali), even if they're thick will not be as helpful as the ones you can buy there. Know it's going to suck, but it'll get better. Snow is actually the biggest thing I dislike about Ohio but it really worked out. I wish you so so much luck!

Definitely recommend hand warmers, they're a life saver. Also, you're advice about college was much appreciated, i'm currently a second semester freshman and struggling to decide if I should change my major or not. Good luck in Chicago, and congrats on getting your dream job!:)

I totally second what you said about knowing what you want to major in as soon as you got into college. I had no clue going in and picked something that I had not really researched much, and ended up finding my happy place with a English Major with Professional Writing&Emerging Media and Graphic Arts Tech minors. (it's a mouthful, i know). And really, the major is a stepping stone, what you do with it, the experience & skills you gain is really what matters.

GIRL. LAYERS. Surviving the cold isn't possible without layers. I recently moved across country from San Diego all the way to Boston (lol literally *all* the way across the country). It's terrifying at first, but I promise you, everything will settle in and you'll be back in your groove in no time. It helps that you have someone who supports you going along as well. :) You got this!

Definitely get a good quality electric blanket. I can't live without mine in the winter! You can warm your bed up with it before you get in too. Fleece pajama bottoms, fuzzy socks, and cozy blankets.

Michigan cold friend advice: When it's snowing make sure you pack a pair of cute work shoes in your purse. Wear heavy winter boots outside and then change into cute shoes when you get to the office. :)

I'm from Chicago! For the winter you definitely need a long winter jacket because it can be freezing, good pair of snow boots, gloves! I definitely recommend taking the CTA because you can get everywhere you need to be with the trains and buses. In the summer it can get really hot but you should be use to that. If you're bringing a car, the traffic is horrible and sometimes the drivers can be rude. Chicago is an amazing city with so many parts to explore so I'm sure you'll love it 💕

I'm from Boston and the cold is rough, but I also kind of love it, so here is how you survive: get yourself a giant warm coat and tons of layers. I always wear at least one sweater or flannel, so you can perfectly adjust how warm you are (because it's always a pain when it is crazy cold outside but then you get hot indoors). And get a ton of scarves. I kinda love dressing for cold weather because you have so many more options for what you can wear and layer and its just kinda fun. And buy gloves and a hat.

    Tips for cold weather:
    - tea is your new bread and butter
-hats and scarves are your best friends
-I don't know about Chicago, but in Vermont snow is a problem, be prepared
    - keep in mind that by the end of winter, it'll be like 40 degrees outside and you'll be wearing t-shirts and shorts, you get used to the cold or you die trying

I moved to Chicago from Northern California in 2016 so the concept of serious frigid weather was an unknown territory for me as well! I recommend buying your heavy winter coats (we're talking about the ones that hit your knees or go past your knees) after winter when everything will go on sale. Also, layering is essential to living here and some nice winter boots (Sorrel & LL Bean are popular brands here). It's such a great city though! And good luck with your move! It's such a terrifying process but you feel like such an adult once you conquer it.

Get yourself some WOOL and leather boots and gloves/hats/scarves!! Think about wind breaking wear since it is not only cold but windy!!!!! Good luck, I can't wait to follow you on this journey!! I'm so glad that you are promoting bravery and not giving in to fear- this is so refreshing and a message that young people very much need to hear. Bravo!

Congrats on the job! I'm from Chicago and lived there for 18 years until I moved 1,000 miles away to go to school in Boston, so if you ever want recommendations on what to do in Chicago or how to deal with moving far away then I'd be happy to help.
In regards to cold weather survival: make sure you always wear layers, even indoors. Have at least one pair of boots (that go up past your ankles) with a grip on the bottom for icy/snowy weather, wool socks are everything. Buy a good puffy coat with a hood and a down blanket. Make sure to have lots of pairs of gloves/mittens that won't soak up moisture, also have scarves on hand. Oh, and if you have a car and an informal parking space in front of your apartment, in the winter you'll have to dig out the snow from your spot...make sure to claim it by using some kind of plastic/folding chair.
Enjoy the city! I miss it so much. It's one of the most affordable cities in the country, and you get to experience every season there. It's big, but not too big, and it's easy to navigate since it's on a grid. It has a lot to offer, and many things are free (like the zoo and the beaches). Have fun!!!
P.S. If you're an ice cream fan, check out Margie's on Western and Armitage. You'll see.

Congrats on the new job!!! I live in Michigan and my biggest cold weather tip is thick warm socks and a proper coat. Not a pea coat, but like a knee length down coat with a hood. Chicago winters are not to be messed with. Get some good gloves and a cozy headband or hat too or your ears will fall off. Not actually but it feels like it haha.

So happy for you! Moving to a new state for a job is incredibly terrifying and stressful. My fiance and I did it in November (after just moving in August). But I knew I would look back and hate myself if I didn't take this job opportunity because of fear/anxiety of new things. It's totally scary and you'll be stressed up until you're totally settled in at your new job, but it'll be so worth it. Not only for the new job, but for all of the new experiences you're going to have.
Surviving in the cold is surprisingly easy! I went to undergrad in western PA in a town that was basically winter year round and never cancelled classes and now live in the DC metro area which isn't as cold but still pretty chilly compared to Texas obviously. Thermal undershirts will seriously save your life. Uniqlo has my favorite undershirts because they are really thin so you can still wear business casual stuff over them without it being super obvious. Wear boots/long socks and keep a cute pair of flats either in your work bag or in your desk to change into. You might want to have a tiny desk fan if you are like me and get incredibly bundled up to not freeze on the commute only to then sweat your ass off by the time you get into the office. Waterproof bag/jackets are a must! and you can find super cute ones. I use Lo & Sons bags which are kind of expensive but they last forever and as long as you don't totally drench them, you're good. Have a really good face moisturizer in your bag/desk to help prevent wind burn on your face which is a serious bummer. Gloves with those finger touch thingies so you can still use your smart phone are also really helpful lol.
Best tip I have for packing/moving: The last thing to pack is toilet paper! lol it sounds so stupid but it will end up being the first thing you unpack in the new place and you won't realize how much life sucks until you need it and don't have it.
Fun tip to help you learn a new city: Map out the book stores and then take trips by public transit to visit them. When I moved to Philly in 2013 that's how I became comfortable with navigating the city. Obviously do some research into the relative safety of the areas you'll be going. But it gave me the motivation to get out into a city where I was a totally newbie and absolutely terrified/knew no one.

Hey! I moved half-way across the country right after undergrad and then 2 years later, did it again after grad school to my first professional position and have now lived here for 2 years. It's definitely stressful, but what helped me was having friends help pack and having my family road trip with me to the new places! So did having some wonderful get-togethers to say goodbye to friends before I left. But most importantly- get organized now! I found sticky notes and color-coordinating boxes to be immensely helpful in the moving process- I found that I didn't have to stress about where things were going because it was already decided. (Also, when you get to your new place, unpack the necessities first- bedroom-kitchen-bathroom. The rest can wait.) Good luck!

Congrats! I wish I started looking for a job at the beginning of my senior year. But I got my dream job either way, even 6 months after graduation :) Thick sweaters, sturdy boots, warm socks, hats, and gloves are a must in the cold weather. And warm scarves, not just for the neck, but for the face too.

OMG I love your hair. I live an hour away from Chicago. I moved from small town in Missouri with no job, I was terrified. You will get there! Just takes time. So happy for you. For very cold weather, buy thermal leggings that can go under jeans. Big heavy down coats, earmuffs and gloves all a must. Have a lot of boots! You'll be excited by the fall and winter fashions once you get into it :) i was freezing for a little while but then I totally got used to it after a few seasons

How to survive the cold? Well I moved from Germany to Norway right after High School and first thing I learned is there is no bad weather just bad clothes.
I learned through winter to wear layers, because if you just have one warm thing on you will sweat like hell once you enter a store, cafe etc...
And another great tip was to keep your wrists, hands, feet, neck and ears warm.
Highly recommend stocking up on tea and candles in case you are ever stuck at home thanks to a storm.
And congrats at the Job!!! You deserve it! I wish I would be so... lucky some day!
