I'm always intimidated by historical fictions but you've convinced me to finally pick up All the light we cannot see!!
Btw I mentioned you in my last favorites video because, well, you're awesome :)

If you like historical fictions you should check out Susanna Kearsley's books, particularly the Firebird and The Shadowy Horses. Those are both amazing and I love them even though I dont normally like historical fiction. They're great for beginner historical fiction readers :)

Try reading Ruta Sepetys' books, she writes highly readable historical fiction but still manages to make it really really beautiful.

Jane Eyre man... I feel you girl! For me this is the best classic I've ever read and maybe it's because for me, it was also the first classic I've ever read and watched the movie and read it again! I love it very much even though I'm not into classics...but Jane Eyre has a special place in my heart ❤

I'm reading Harry Potter for the first time right now! I'm about halfway through Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and I can finally understand how much this series can impact a person! I am so in love with the world and all of the characters and I find myself constantly wondering if we'll ever get another series that is as impacting as Harry Potter!
Aaaaahhh I also really want to read the Percy Jackson series! I have only read The Lightning Thief and I loved it so much, not sure why I haven't gotten to the other books yet! :O

    • @HollyByGollyBooks
      @HollyByGollyBooks 7 ปีที่แล้ว

OMG that's so crazy!!!! Hahahahah I love how we're in the exact same spot! And YES! I definitely understand all of the hype! I tried reading other books after A Chamber of Secrets and couldn't even do it because all I wanted to read was Harry Potter :) lol

    • @BellaBeeBaby
      @BellaBeeBaby 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

+HollyByGollyBooks omg that's how i felt... the answer is NO!! we will never get another series that could even compare.... and fyi, if you haven't read the new screenplay yet"the cursed child" I'd recommend NOT.. it might ruin everything... I'm not going near that lol

      @HollyByGollyBooks 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

THAT'S SO DEPRESSING! I'm kind of happy that I'm starting it now then hahahaha I'm going to try and savor it as much as I can!!!!
And thank you! I will definitely not be picking it up until I'm done with the series then, that would be awful spoiling myself for everything!! Hahaha. I do know a few spoilers, but pretty much only deaths and not actual events that happen lol, I'm sooooo excited to dive into the rest of the series!!!!

I was exactly the same! Until I was about 13 (I'm 19 now) I never read Harry Potter or saw a movie of Harry Potter (the biggest reason was that until that age I was very easily scared) and I really didn't understand why everyone kept going on about it. Finally my brother and father convinced me to watch a Harry Potter movie and slowly I began to fall in love with it (at first I was still scared ;) ). I started reading the books and I was so blown away by them. Those books changed my life. The way every detail is important in the story and how it all fits togheter and the way it all connects intrigues me so mutch!

The Harry Potter series has intrigued me because everything fits together like a puzzle and there's so much to theorize about which I've always loved but I also love how it can represent something different each time you read it based on your experiences and knowledge and it sends such a strong message without coming across as cheesy or stupid

It's really nice to see you mentioning Twilight in this because it was an important series for me too. Although I admit it may not be the best one out there, but it was sooo captivating. Now people see it more as a guilty pleasure and as a lame story.
Besides Harry Potter and Twilight, what comes to mind right now is also The Anne Frank Diary. It is very impressive to read a young girl's opinions about war and life in general because she seems wise beyond her years. I can't help but wonder what would have become of her if she would've survived the war.

    1. Sarah Desson books; these introduced me to YA in middle school, and more mature romance
    2. TID trilogy by Cassandra clare; I've never gotten my heart broken so much from another book, and this trilogy was the first that I actually got emotionally attached to the characters in such an intense way
    3. Between Shades of Grey by Ruta Sepetys; I read this as a freshman in high school. This started my love for historical fiction, especially during WWII. Also, this was my first depressing book that talked about serious topics, which was different from all the fluffy romances I used to read.
    4. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon; I honestly am not a fan of this book, but this is the longest book I've ever read (800+ pages!), and finishing was like crossing the finish line in a marathon. I was always scared to read really long adult books, but not anymore XD
    5. The Lux Series; This is the first series where I discovered what it meant to hardcore ship a couple (#DATYFORLIFE), and also introduced me to sic-fi. This is just one of my fav series of all time, and also another one of the books to introduce me to YA and love/hate relationships which are my guilty pleasure :P
I have a lot more books that impacted me in some way or another *cough cough the ACOTAR series*, but these are probably my top five.

The BFG will always stick with me. It was one of the first books I read on my own after I really learned to read. I struggled to read for a long time--I didn't like it and up through first grade, you can kind of fudge it by looking at the pictures. After truly learning to read (thanks Mom and Dad and Ms. Martin), this was one of the first books that I read and loved and sparked my love for reading.

the first Harry Potter movie first came out around the time that my mum and dad were getting a divorce, and my mum starting seeing my step dad. it was an incredibly difficult time in my life because I was still so young. my mum was heartbroken and just gave up. I had to grow up pretty quickly when it happened and was kind of expected to help look after my autistic older brother. I was his personal punching bag, too. Harry Potter was just so important to me because it meant that I could escape from the real world for a while. I started reading fairly young and was an extremely advanced reader for my age, and Harry Potter was the first proper book that I read. it holds such a sentimental place in my heart, because it helped me through really difficult times. x

So happy to see Percy Jackson on your list, and the teaching thing I get so much. I learnt so much about mythology because of these books. Percy Jackson definitely makes my list and a couple of others of mine would be the Mortal Instruments because it opened Booktube up to me and Aristotle and Dante because it made me like more traditionally contemporary books that I used to skirt around so much...

I read both Fangirl and The Help this summer, almost back to back and I have never loved a book as much as either of those. Or, at least since middle school. I always considered myself a reader when I was young, but I didn't realize until recently that I haven't actually read many books. So this summer I set out to change that and finally fall in love with a book as an adult. And both of those were just amazing. I loved the characters, was moved by the stories, and they made me realize that there were in fact books out there that I would love wholly and rate 5 out of 5, which I had started to believe wouldn't happen. Now that I'm in school again, I don't have time to read but a little, but I'm so excited for when I'll be able to again! Winter break, here I come!

My list in no particular orden:
    -Percy Jackson series
    -Harry Potter series
    -The Book Thief
-The Kingkiller Chronicle series (I shook off the fear of reading massive fantasy books)
-Cloud Atlas (love both book and movie!)
-Hunger Games trilogy (it had a huge impact on me when i was younger and introduce me into w/a, distopian and other young-adult series)
-Between Shades of Grey (introduce me into historical fiction and had an incredible emocional impact on me)
-Mi Planta de Naranja-Lima, by José Mauro de Vasconcelos (it was the first book that i remember reading and had a huge impact as well, it's a very sad and beautiful story)
And I'm currently starting A Song of Ice and Fire series, which I know I'll probably add to this list when i'm finished. God, I have so many! But all of them have influenced me in a way I'll never forget :)

I think that your explanation regarding Twilight's importance in your reading life is spot ON. I believe that it was a pivotal book for many, many readers-whether they're willing to admit it or not! Also, I have only been a subscriber for a short time, but I already know that my tastes are very similar to yours; and for some reason, I'm feeling super strongly about recommending 'Everything I Never Told You' by Celeste Ng to you. Although my go-to genres are usually YA, Fantasy, & SciFi, I adored this contemporary fiction book. It was just an extremely visceral, gorgeous experience for me. I hope you check it out at some point. Oh! I REALLY hope that I didn't just blather on and on about a book that you've already read, lol...

Divergent was very influential to me in the sense that it got me into both booktube and turned me into an avid reader
To Kill a MockingBird by Harper Lee was influential. It in my opinion has such great underlying themes and I knew of issues before then, but that book really made me realize how much I love analyzing novels and opened my eyes more. Textbooks are good, but sometimes it takes a story like that to really open someone's eyes and to make someone understand if that makes sense.

Loved this video, Regan! Don't ever feel bad or uncomfortable for mentioning twilight. I know that lots of people feel weird bringing it up because it's such a polarising book but I don't care what the haters say. Reading the twilight saga ignited my love for reading to another level and I read so many other books because of them. It was a hugely loved and influential book/saga for a lot of people and it was also influential to the book industry and the film industry. It created doorways for a lot of other books/YA/film adaptations etc. Twilight was a door opener for me as well and it led to so many more wonderful experiences, friendships and books etc. And so I'm never going to apologise for loving it or for the positives it provided :) So don't feel bad about talking about it :)

When I was a Freshman in High School, Twilight was on the rage. Everyone was reading it at my school and so going with the flow, I also read it and it was this very novel that made me love reading books and novels. It's not the content in the book exactly that made it an influential book but the act of picking up and reading a novel for the first time and then continuing to read at that point and meeting people who love reading as much as you do. Thank you for making me realize that I'm not the only one who thought that this novel was very significant part of their life! P.S. I love your videos!

Percy Jackson series for me. It was honestly on of the first actual books I read in like 3rd grade and I will always have a special place in my heart for that whole franchise. I binge read the whole series and re read it to this day. It got me into the fandom in which I made many friends and got into other books, Lightning thief had a special connection with me, protraying all that was expected of the characters even tho they are just kids. Favorite series of all time.

I totally agree with what you say about Twilight! I got completely obsessed with it, and it was a bit of a crazy period, but it also made me get back to reading passionately. I've always read, but there was a bit of a pause before Twilight with my reading. • @iKaroliina
    @iKaroliina 7 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with you on Twilight and Jane Eyre, as I read the title of the video I started to think about books that have influenced me. Twilight was certainly one of the most important because it made me read books in English. I had read a lot of teen books before by authors from my country (Estonia) but never any books in English. I read the first one in Estonian but the other books hadn't been translated yet so I persuaded my mum to buy those for me in English. Thanks to this English has become really easy for me, almost as easy as speaking Estonian. I read Jane Eyre when I was a teen and I had heard from lot of people that it was their favorite, it didn't matter who they were (grown up men, girls my age), everyone liked it, so I gave it a try. Now I love classical literature because of it and it is one of my absolute favorites. Also I didn't own a copy of it until one of my friends thought that she would give it to me for my birthday because it was also her favorite book and it influenced her a lot.

    • @iKaroliina

Also Percy Jackson was my Harry Potter. I didn't read Harry Potter until all the books were out and I was 16. But I discovered Percy Jackson thanks to the movie. I really liked the movie and it made me want to read the book. I marathoned through all the books that were out at that time and I love that Riordan writes new stuff every year and anticipate all his books because I love his humor sense.

I'd def love a second part to this video! Some of the most influential books I've read are:
Robin Hood by Howard Pyle. This book was just such a jolly good and fun adventure, and I laughed and cried with Robin and his friends. This was one of my first books that ever evoked such strong feelings within me. I had tears running down my face at the ending and at the thougt that the story had come to an end. Still my favorite today.
The three musketeers and The last chevalier by Alexandre Dumas I remember as these crazy, complex and entertaining adventures and epic love-stories with amazing characters. It just increased my love to read!
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone by J.K Rowling made me enjoy reading for the first time ever. I recall being like superexcited over all the owls settling outside the Dursley's house, because that was so cool... yeah, I hadn't read very creative texts before HP.
Fast forward a couple of years, when I'm turning the last page of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and just fully admiring the beautiful yet immensely sad story. It made me question the actual power words can have, and made me gain new respect for literature, books and authors in general.
The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey left me staring out into space for several minutes just thinking about humanity and what happens when everything we thought we knew about it is tested all over again... Such a powerfull tale.
Also, because this longass comment never seem to end, I might just add that my top influential authors for now are Jules Verne and Suzanne Collins. Their books just changed and continue to change my perception of the world, the humans who at the same time take care of it and destroy it.
I just, I really love books.

Percy Jackson Series(and post series) and the pretty little liars series are what has kept me reading even when I didn't really read. I always anticipated the new release for the year for these series and it wasn't until junior year I started reading more books that weren't those for fun!

The Outsiders by S.E. HInton (first book in school that I read and loved-still have my copy from 8th grade)
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (got me into reading longer books and helped me to realize that I love historical fiction)
The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis (one of the first fantasy books I remember reading as a kid)
Nimona by Noelle Stevenson (first graphic novel that I read)
Fruits Basket by Natsuki Takaya (one of the first manga series that I ever read and introduced me that style of reading)

    1. Harry Potter- taught me about magic and adventure, i grew up with the books and films and they will always hold a special place in my heart
    2. I don't know if anyone knows this series but it's called the My Weird School series and it's about this kid that goes to this school where all the adults are eccentric (Miss Daisy is Crazy, Mr Klutz is Nuts, etc.) these are influential because as a kid I struggled a bit when it came to reading and these where the first books that really helped me when it came to reading
    3. Percy Jackson - never had I felt such a connection to the characters or a feeling of adventure since Harry Potter, also when I stopped reading for like a year or too these books helped me fall back in love with reading
    4. The Perks of Being a Wallflower -showed me that there is more to contemporary than just fluffy romance, it's such a beautiful story that has really stuck with me
    5. The Book Thief - the writing is so beautiful and the story really struck a cord with me

I agree with Mistborn being awesome! It seemed like such an heavy read, but the characters are actually young enough that it gives young adult vibes, while being a more well made and special fantasy story. Definitely worth a try 😄

Harry Potter for sure, A Song of Ice and Fire was pretty instrumental for me in finding out that I loved fantasy, and Just Kids by Patti Smith which really got me into non fiction reading about art and friendship.

The Fallen series by Lauren Kate as it got me into reading when I didn't read. I know a lot of people have issues with the series but I loved it. It gave me my love of reading.

Twilight is the series that made me love YA! I started blogging and meet the awesome booknerd community it was awesome!
I think that's the only book I've read out of your list hehe.
Anyway, now that I've found your channel I'm looking forward to your videos :)

It was interesting hearing why Twilight is influential to you. It is very much a conditional read, it seems.
Top 5 most influential books for me (so far):
Inkheart - Cornelia Funke (first book to really get me reading)
The Illustrated Man - Ray Bradbury (introduction to short stories and how poetic prose writing can be)
The Sparrow - Mary Doria Russell (first adult book I read outside of class - characters truly came alive for the first time for me)
Harry Potter - J.K. Rowling (bc I read this series later in life it influenced how I saw the young adult genre as not necessarily just for teens)
House of Leaves - Mark Danielewski (first taste of horror - the realization I like the horror genre more than I thought)

I still haven't read the Percy Jackson series oops. I totally agree with you that Twilight got me into reading more books. I am about to read Jane Eyre in march so I'm excited for that. An influential book I read was probably the Outsiders

Oh wow. For me, it was Alana by Tamora Peirce that got me into fantasy in a huge way. Also seeing and reading Lord of the Rings. I've always loved reading, but the book that got me into reading chapter books and reading obsessively was Little House in the Big Woods in second grade. It made me love reading about a different time period and almost a different world in my mind. Books by Meg Cabot made me read more teen fiction and reading My Sisters Keeper made me read more adult fiction.

I'd say Magic Treehouse because it got me into reading; the 39 Clues & Nancy Drew because they made me read longer novels; Percy Jackson introduced me to fantasy; and Kingdom Keepers is what REALLY sparked my love for books (it was the first series I ever fangirled over and bought every book as they came out)

Jacqueline Wilson - Kiss (the first book that made me think about filmmaking - kind of my passion now)
The Star of Kazan (the book that made me fall in love with Austria and I plan to live there one day)
Harry Potter (like everyone else I grew up with this and book 3 was the first proper novel I tried to read before the film came out)
The three musketeers (the only classic I've enjoyed so far in my very limited classic journey)
Lady Midnight (the first time I waited for a ya book to come out after I'd loved previous series)

Gone with the Wind was the second book I read in my life, I was about 11. (And later I read Dürrenmatt and Tennessee Williams, at the age of 11... Yeh, weird kid, lol) So GWTW was amazing for me, cause Mitchell was such a fantastic storyteller, every page was exciting, Scarlett was just an awesome character, and I loved history, so this book was really the one for me. And not only that, but when I re-read it a few years ago, when I was about 29, I found it an amazing read, again, but of course it meant different things now, because I've been through a lot in the previous years, and it was a great feeling to see the same things Scarlett is going through, and of course her lesson, that you have to stay strong, no matter what. Gosh, I love her. :)

Inkheart by Cornelian Funke - Because it was a book about people who love to read.
Twilight - Because it introduced me to YA fiction.
City of Bones - Because it was in many ways my first true obsession.
The Hunger Games - Because I have never read through a trilogy so fast and because the themes in those novels still resonate so much with me today and have shaped my view of the world so much.
Divergent - Because it was the first book-movie adaptation I for which I fan casted and religiously followed the entire process of the production of the film
