Manual labor...YES! I'm an engineer and I spend a lot of time working on home improvement (construction, tile, electrical, plumbing, everything), car repair & maintenance, yard work, etc. I can afford to pay people to do these things, but it's part of my persona as a confident and capable man. The number of men who can't even repair a leaking faucet or clogged drain is frightening to me. Guys, the feeling of getting something done is unbeatable.
Paramedic here. Have a basic knowledge of first aid and know how to properly perform CPR and use an AED. Getting some simple training in these areas can literally save lives. It also trains the mind on how to stay calm under pressure.
Planting a garden can be a great source of physical labor, as well as an outlet for creative, planning, and strategic thinking. Plus if it's a vegetable garden, you're literally feeding yourself. Another option is to combine physical activity with self-reflection. A hike is a great time to reflect, as is a rest break at some destination along it - a lookout point, waterfall, etc.
20/20/20 is a good practice. 20 mins physical exercise, 20 mins meditation and reflection, planning the day with 5 achievable goals and 20 mins of reading a nice book and drinking a cup of coffee
On the self-care topic. I’m deep in depression and forget or just choose to not shower that night or shave and god when I do it after a couple days, I feel absolutely amazing and self-confident
Another great one James. As a 60 year old interloper on this young man's channel, I'd also offer that the part about spending time with your thoughts, and doing manual labor, often overlap. In the summer, I always mow my lawn and trim hedges myself, and in winter, I always am the one to shovel the driveway and walk-up. When I do these very manual and time consuming tasks, I get by far my best thinking done.
Great video, James. I would add reading to this list. Spending as little as 15-30 minutes a day on literature, whether reading or writing, is super beneficial and helps combat our shrinking attention spans. Take it from me, I have ADHD and dyslexia, and writing/reading has truly made a difference for me.
Speaking about spending more time in nature: the whole royal family of the UK leaves for the countryside whenever possible to enjoy the vast opportunity for activities.
I started urban farming, growing grapes, avocados, bananas etc.recently.I have practised goal setting, love taking my dogs for walks on the beach, use to be a Sunday school teacher at church, etc.
I like doing minor house repairs. I have installed a water heater, can rewire an electrical outlet and do minor plumbing. I installed ceiling fans and undercabinet lighting in my daughter’s apartment. As an avid cyclist, I’m also doing my first bike build to teach myself basic bicycle mechanics.
White collar worker here, doing physical work is good therapy. And can use these skills and exercise opportunity to impress women by fixing small electrical, plumbing, doors or gates around their homes.
Yes, this is especially helpful if one is feeling down and despondent in life, as if his days are unproductive. Once you put some time to helping others, that specific time you will know you've done something of worth -- whatever other struggles still remain unfixed in ones life.
James, I am a big fan of your content. We need stronger men in society today. Self care is extremely important. Unless tou love yourself, you cant love others.
Something that I like doing myself is taking care of my shoes, like cleaning and polishing them. It gives me some time for reflection, while doing a manual work.
Excellent video James Self reflection is very important to analyze yourself snd find way to improve in same way CEO reviews his portfolio always looking for improvements I love do my weekly self reflection Sundays I tend to do with cup of espresso & cigar.
I built a chicken coop ( pitched roof shingles and all ) and años remodeled two bathrooms in my home ( hand plastered ). Daily expensive ( hey you live once ) cigar is a ritual. Washing by hand your dress shirts followed by ironing Is a meditation. 🙏🏾
I volunteer at a horse rescue ranch which not only gets me out into nature, but unloading and stacking hay is hard yet rewarding work. Bonding with the horses is a side benefit.
Going to an office at this point would be a tremendous improvement, since most men are determined on working from home so they can game until 3am , roll of bed at 7:55AM to log into their laptops located in their bedrooms at 8AM. WFH is one of the worse things to happen to men in recent history .
I agree with you, for the most part. I used my WFH arrangement to start a side-hustle on company time, and now it's my full time job. So I can't be 100% anti WFH 😂
No, WFH is one of the good things that came out in recent times. Dressing well has nothing to do with whether you go to an office or not. You sound like a control freak middle management shill who's speaking out of his behind.
As to point 4, I worked as a carpenter’s mate during my summer holiday at University, I have never been more fit, strong or flexible. Didn’t need the gym, just a week at work. Often wish I had just stuck to that!
I feel like in akin to being a great role model, we should look for ways to serve. I find a lot of pent-up stress leave my body when I take the time to help others in any way I can. Often, the best treatment for your inner problems is by looking outwards to others.
I recently saw a quote that men should live by Be so disciplined and so well dressed that you will make everyone around uncomfortable I have been doing youth mentorship for past 2 years with young boy and occasionally take his sister out too I see good improvement in a boy. Unfortunately his dad left right after birth Young boy loves my vintage automobiles and fashion and as we spend time together he is changing his mind to work hard to have better life as he sees reward of hard work when we are together. I told him you and your sister keep grades up college be gift from me to motivate them
Making other people uncomfortable is no sign of being a gentleman. There is a quote from the movie Blast from the Past that says it best: Troy: You know, I asked him about that. He said, good manners are just a way of showing other people we have respect for them. See, I didn't know that, I thought it was just a way of acting all superior. Oh and you know what else he told me? Eve: What? Troy: He thinks I'm a gentleman and you're a lady. Eve: [disgusted] Well, consider the source! I don't even know what a lady is. Troy: I know, I mean I thought a "gentleman" was somebody that owned horses. But it turns out, his short and simple definition of a lady or a gentleman is, someone who always tries to make sure the people around him or her are as comfortable as possible.
While it would probably be highly looked down up on. I believe we should bring back men being able to tell other men they need to get in shape. I am (and always have been) vastly over weight. If it was in my face everyday (politely yet pointed) that I need to do something about it I most likely would. We have made this world into a world of unchecked acceptance. Instead of the world being slim and them telling me to get with the program the world is "hey man nice dad bod, I'm working on mine as well *pats gut*" I watch all these old TV shows and movies ( and while yes they are/were movie stars even the extras are slim and look confident. Something that sticks out to me is Sean Connery was 34ish when he filmed Gold Finger and that's only a few years older than me right now. And let me tell you I look no wear near what he did at that age. Also his confidence in wearing that bathrobe jumper was amazing.
1970s kid here. fat kids were hounded mercilessly from one end of school to the other. constant "shut up tubby boy!" kind of thing. not just by other kids, but also by some teachers. don't think we should go back to that per se, tho you are most right about "unchecked acceptance". tho one aspect of "unchecked acceptance" might be manhood-in-disguise, which is "mind your own business and stay in your own lane". also, no man in their right mind, particularly a family provider, wants their career ruined because "i'm sure you were trying to be helpful, however your remarks about ___ makes this person uncomfortable".
The motivation to change has to come from within. You won't drag yourself out of bed at 6am to run or lift weights just because other people suggested that you needed to. If you don't have the fire then you can't look to others to put it there. You can look to others for inspiration but you can't expect them to look to you and want to inspire you. You shouldn't want or need others to encourage you into it, nor is it their responsibility, it is yours. What's more, the change will mean so much more to you, and the development you undergo will be far more significant, for having found it in yourself. The polite guidance I can give is that you will only change if *you* want to, and respectfully it seems (though I don't know you) that you seek to project your inaction onto others. Good luck.

You mean like pedophilia?
All of the UK should follow their example when it comes to this. Nature is a blessing especially in our modern age.
How fortunate that we normal plebs can afford to do what the UK Royal Family does for leisure.

I own a business i am always with my employees, i work side by side with them, but i am still..the owner of the business, i must lead them, inspire them, and i hope my wife is proud of this.. u kinda destroyed my self esteem..u made me feel useless...
