A good knife. I spent 2 days forging my own knife with my father. It isn’t a masterpiece but it is good looking and every time I pick it up I am reminded of that quality time spent with him. It’s solid and strong and will outlast me comfortably
More important than a grand piano is a good desk whether for work or just to sit at. So many different styles and sizes. I opted to build mine for myself.
Fountain pens were actually my very first introduction to buying quality crafted products. Fell in love with fountain pens, and mechanical watches came shortly after that. I love a functional art piece, something that elevates a mundane daily task like writing or checking the time. When I write with my Lamy 2K or Pilot Custom 823, I just have more fun. Men’s classic fashion came later to me, when I felt a little silly wearing a nice automatic watch, writing with a nice gold nib pen, but was still wearing jeans and an untucked polo shirt to my office job! Great video as always, love all these choices.
An interesting selection. Some I would never have considered. Others are a staple I agree with. For me a watch is the most important piece. The table lamp is an inspired choice The meat slicer is hilarious
I actually found my way to this style from first collecting vintage video games - while it started as a fun way to relive my childhood memories, I then became appreciative of physical media and the importance of having real copies of items over digital. Then, during the pandemic, cooking became a fun and healthy hobby for me- I started to collect vintage and thrifted cookware, learning which brands are the ones to go for in terms of quality and ones that will last if you restore them right. Only about 1 year ago I started to expand this into vintage fashion and other items, partly because of that sense of classic style, but also because of the 'last a lifetime,' philosophy- if we treat things well, we can have quality items that we can actually have an attachment to
I would recommend a small pocket knife that you can carry around without bulging your trouser pocket. Regarding the meat slicer, we have a Graef for decades.
I’d love you you could make a “starter pack” guide for menswear - it’d be incredibly useful for those of us just starting out, and not sure exactly what to initially invest in. Thanks! 😊
Absolutely! We have many videos that can help, but this playlist is perhaps a great starting point: th-cam.com/play/PLwC33qrNZRbAP6hjsvFr-KcsYGO7qfiz5.html
You missed the most important one, in my estimation! Books are a very special part of my life. Ulysses, by James Joyce is a source of great joy and sometimes deep wonder for me as this genius almost seems to re-invent language itself. I have commentaries and a few different copies, one that is annotated and marked up. I have just recently invested in a very high end printing of this favorite classic! This copy is by Easton Press, and is adorned with the art of Bill Carman. For me, this is a treasured heirloom I will pass down when my life comes to it's end. I believe, if you have even a modest love of reading, investing in a high quality edition of your favorite book or books is an essential. Thank you for all that you do! I enjoy this channel and always learn something when I tune in to it. You have great presenters, each with a uniqueness I find awesome!
I always have a large collection of books present wherever I’m living. I don’t have many classic publications but one I am after is a 1940s printing of Don Quixote with illustrations by Salvador Dali. I love all books especially the classics, and manly classics in general.
Lamps are a brilliant mention, I don't often think about them but I have some quality ones that I can't imagine living without. One addition I'd offer is cookware. Quality pots and pans tend to last a lifetime, get what you like and spend some money!
For the cuff-links may I make a suggestion. Browse the jewelry box of your mother, grandmother, or glamours aunt. Ask for an interesting pair of earrings, especially mid-century Bakelite to be bequeath to you. It will probably be given to you. Have a jeweler to convert them into cuff-links, keep the backs for your daughter to reuse as earrings. A new family tradition is established and you have unique pieces.
I love this channel because it makes the viewer think in a broader way, what a gentleman wears and owns. However, I think there are more basic affectations of a gentleman. Additional items every man should own: A great folding knife, historically referred to as a pocket knife. Buck is the old school maker of these knives and I have one that’s at least 40 years old. They have limitless uses and practical applications. By the same token, a fixed blade knife…too many brands to name but Kershaw comes to mind. There are tactical and tool knives and every man should have at least one. Every outdoorsman has more than a few. Sven owns a slicer, but every gentleman should have a good set of kitchen knives. I also think a basic tool kit is necessary. What it’s should be comprised of is somewhat subjective, but I’ve saved the day many times because I had the right tool for the job. Although, compared to my brothers, my tools are quite rudimentary.
@ You guys are great! Now that I’ve shot my mouth off, it’s time to support the channel by making a purchase …gotta get some of those shadow striped Sox!
The comments show mixed ideas about luggage. But I just bought a finely crafted toiletry/dopp kit made from heavy waxed canvas, thick veg-tanned leather, and a heavy-duty YKK zipper. It's such a pleasure to use every day, and I thank myself for the time it took to research, and select something really proudly made. A true gentleman's accessory.
As i draw closer to the end of life; I do treasure some items that have been with me for the journey. For me my prize items are a couple of quality kitchen knives as I love to cook and a money clip I purchased as a high school senior in 1975.
My list apart from these are as follows:- 1) Customized book shelf (different genres in different section which should be further divided in subsections based upon what you have read, what you are currently reading and what will be your next read) 2) A great pair of study table with comforting chair so that studying these books can be a joy rather than a monotonous work 3) small gardening area (portion of balconies should be dedicated to nurture flowers)
A pair of spectacle frames. Pay a good amount for them up front, and if you take good care of them, they'll last you a lifetime. Additionally, if the lens wear off, you can always replace them.
On request in your video about foutain pens I bought Pilot metropolitan and its awesome. I use it every day. Maybe one day I will have money to spare on some Waterman. I love this kind of videos. Please, continue!
A valet stand is such an underrated piece of furniture. Far better than just hanging your clothes on a chair and throwing your keys and wallet into a basket somewhere.
I really started paying attention to leather this year after watching one of your videos, and recently purchased a passport holder and pen case. I also have a shoulder bag that I use every day (so it won't last a life time)
I have a handful of lamy fountain pens and they have lasted through daily use for over 5 years now, they're not the fanciest looking pens, but they do an amazing job and come with swappable nibs so you can get the size you want (I always use wide nibs)
Great video! An alternate suggestion to the meet slicer to me would be a quality set of chef's knives and a sturdy wooden cutting board. Those are things I find invaluable in my kitchen.
A man should have items he can pass on to his son, I think. A knife, watch, cufflinks or fountain pen are great choices. The items that carry on through generations are truly special. I have a nice collection of vintage pocket knives. I tend to be a little more rugged of a man stylistically but refined as well. I’m more of the Hemingway type than the traditional dandy.
Going along with your suggestion of colognes, finding a good beard oil (and other products) supplier goes a long way in your scent profile as well as the health and texture of your facial hair.
my prized possession’s a KoP sword that’s at least a hundred years old and is the last thing my grandmother gave me. On top of that I collect antiques (primarily blades) and while I have no way of knowing how long they’ll last past me I think a Roman coin from the first century or a piece of civil war pottery has lasted at least a few lifetimes already. For more practical purposes I have the leatherman my father was wearing when he met my mother in it’s original leather case. Also I don’t know how long it will last but my favorite EDC knives a buck with the KoP pin from my initiation glued on. Not mine but my mother has a star ruby wedding ring that was my great great grandmother’s.
I think you missed the most important one: A portfolio of investments (stocks, real estate) that finance all of this. It’s the mist important one because it’s the thing one should do first. And if done well, they last a lifetime or generations.
As leathercrafter i agree that minimal use of fabric in leather goods is good thing. It looks nice for a short while but soon gunks up (speed of gunking depends on type of fabric) and it looks not good.
I prefer a collegiate ring over a signet. It aligns more with my preppy New England aesthetic while also feeling that I earned it as opposed to a symbol of hereditary status, but to each their own.
And affter the slicer from Berkel, I was just waiting for something like, and my lifetime favourite recipe is " liver with fava beans, and a nice glass of Chianti " 😮🔪🍷🍽️

Everyone needs a leather organizer with zipper to carry around something to take notes with as well as a small leather wrapper. I prefer german manucaturer Treuleben & Bischof ( "Tebe")
Cutco kitchen knives, lifetime warrenty, not many products can compare. A edge pro knife sharpener, many similar designs but I’ve had mine over 30 years-also sharpens scissors. Kitchen aid mixer with meat grinder attachment. I love companies that stand behind their products. Filson replaced my wallet that I used for 20 years. I have several filson bags now.
IMO, a good pair of quality leather shoes/boots is also worth it. I you take proper care of them, they'll last a lifetime although they will require resoles. I bought a pair of Grant Stone boots last year and I've used them for plenty of situations and although they've got a nice patina now, they are holding up really nicely.
So simple to say, when it doesnt matters if you buy it wrong you can taste every model before chossing the one. Rich people often advise this while consuming 20 times more
Can you please do any updated gentleman’s fabric color pairing guide? I struggle on understanding if color pairings are just classic or outdated. Either way I love your videos. This community alone has singlehandedly ignited my interest in classic style! Which is exiting, but expensive unfortunately :/
His advice often seems not only outdated but also oddly amusing, akin to circus clown costumes. It appears he is trapped in the style of the '70s/'80s era of the Harlem's pimp's style.
@ Shun knives, they are the Rolex and Montblanc of chef knives but Japan has many others extremely hand made high quality knives and a vast history in steel blade craftsmanship.
My “buy for life” items: - Zippo Lighters - Stanley (Thermos and flasks) - GORUCK (Bags, Shoes, Training Gear) - Darn Tough Socks - Saddleback Briefcases - A good knife. - A good razor. WHAT IS THAT BEAUTIFUL ORNATE PAPER?!! I've seen it in all your fountain pen videos and i can't find it ANYWHERE? at least drop some keywords please :D refering to 00:23
You miss straight razor/double edge razor, shaving bowl and shaving brush. your shaving kit easily last for for life and require little maintenance too. The missing detail in wristwatch is you want to get mechanical watch if you want last for life and passed it down to someone else. meanwhile quartz watch as much as I like their reliability telling accurate time, not all of them can last for life and will die eventually in around dozens of years.
Quality shaving items are a great suggestion! The only reason they didn't make the list is because not everyone shaves - still, when bought well they're a fantastic investment
Sir, is your health alright? I see a hint of darkening under your eye. Maybe it's me as I haven't seen videos in a while and saw you today after a long time but if it's anything related to your lifestyle then it needs to taken care of. If everything's alright then ignore my comment. Sorry if my comment made you feel bad. Also, Thanks so much for your videos, been watching since 2018 learning elegance, style, essentials and etiquette from you.
Thanks for your concern, I think it is more a genetic blessing rather than an expression of my lifestyle! My daughter really likes mountainbiking, so I have picked that up with here recently, and I am doing 2-3 Peloton strength workouts a week, and I always get a lot of sleep. So everything is fine and dandy on my end 😃
My signature scent used to be Safari by Ralph Lauren. Since its been discontinued, I just go with " old geezer" soap and water. Any recommendations for a Safari replacement?
Safari is still widely available to buy. But its performance and strength is weaker than back in the day. It’s obviously been reformulated over the years. But it still smells good.
I just after about 5 minutes i realized being a gentleman goes against my beliefs. Far to worldy and based on how people would view me which are two things i dont care about and continue to strive to not care about and its seeming to be a good investment
A good knife. I spent 2 days forging my own knife with my father. It isn’t a masterpiece but it is good looking and every time I pick it up I am reminded of that quality time spent with him.
It’s solid and strong and will outlast me comfortably
The memory and story of the making of the knife is a masterpiece though! Sounds like a good time
I would like to thank you guys for making us aware of some high class items we may not otherwise know about
More important than a grand piano is a good desk whether for work or just to sit at. So many different styles and sizes. I opted to build mine for myself.

What a wonderful story! Cheers 🎉
I say as Mr Winston Churchill: My tastes are simple: I am easily satisfied with the best.
The Meat slicer is so German, i love it
I think the bread slicer is. I have one of those too as it is a serrated blade 😁
Agggh, I came here to say that! That is *the* most German thing ever. Sven, you have cold meat for breakfast sometimes, don't you?
Good morning, I would like to ask you a question privately, if it is not too much trouble please.@@gentlemansgazette
An interesting selection.
Some I would never have considered. Others are a staple I agree with.
For me a watch is the most important piece.
The table lamp is an inspired choice
The meat slicer is hilarious
Always happy to be important, inspired, and hilarious 😅 Appreciate your support!

Look dad, I'm maturing.
I always enjoy seeing Rafael. He’s the man that started it all.

I bought an antique fireside kindling box. I keep my shoe shine brushes, polishes etc in it. It makes me smile every time I go to shine my shoes.

Thank you 😀 I am glad my passion comes through!
A pair of spectacle frames. Pay a good amount for them up front, and if you take good care of them, they'll last you a lifetime. Additionally, if the lens wear off, you can always replace them.
Thank you for everything Raphael!
You and Antonio have changed my style and arguably my life!
Best wishes!

Ich find deinen Kanal super. Schön wie die dein Deutsch rauskommt, wenn du "Meisterstück" sagst.

The Valet Stand is an incredible and under rated pick!
On request in your video about foutain pens I bought Pilot metropolitan and its awesome. I use it every day. Maybe one day I will have money to spare on some Waterman.
I love this kind of videos. Please, continue!
I didn't have the meat slicer on my bingo card, but here we are 🤣
No one expects a meat slicer, until they see how amazing it is 😅
The only thing missing from this list is a wooden desk
A valet stand is such an underrated piece of furniture. Far better than just hanging your clothes on a chair and throwing your keys and wallet into a basket somewhere.

I love this kind of GG
Great video! An alternate suggestion to the meet slicer to me would be a quality set of chef's knives and a sturdy wooden cutting board. Those are things I find invaluable in my kitchen.
A video about Raphael's hat collection like those you made showing the collection of shoes and overcoats would be nice to see.
I did NOT expect number 16!

You vastly underestimate the value of a quality pocket knife.
ultra high quality linen sheets. Game changer but extremely pricey.
would love to see your gentlemans collection of outdoorsman or classic hunting clothing and equipment.
I wanted to say that I really appreciate that there are always subtitles on your videos.
I have a nice mother of pearl and silver cufflinks, and a black and onyx pair from my great great grandfather.
Going along with your suggestion of colognes, finding a good beard oil (and other products) supplier goes a long way in your scent profile as well as the health and texture of your facial hair.
Amazing video as always. Learning lessons ‘for life’ from you ;)
Thank you! 🙌
Id love for a series on leather couches/chesterfields that you think are of quality
I really love this channel
As always, a wonderful opportunity to admire attractive, well-dressed men.
my prized possession’s a KoP sword that’s at least a hundred years old and is the last thing my grandmother gave me. A classy silk robe for the cold winter nights.

I've lost it at the end. Meat slicer?
As leathercrafter i agree that minimal use of fabric in leather goods is good thing. It looks nice for a short while but soon gunks up (speed of gunking depends on type of fabric) and it looks not good.

That last one came out of left field!
We aim to please 😉
And affter the slicer from Berkel, I was just waiting for something like, and my lifetime favourite recipe is " liver with fava beans, and a nice glass of Chianti " 😮🔪🍷🍽️
A quality espresso machine - and learning how to use it. Women especially appreciate a man who can make a good coffee.
Canadian viewer here. apart from the things one wears, much as i would like to collect the things in the video, i am reminded that I should probably wait it out before I own a house. Would like some recommendations from y'all about how to balance the violent urge to purchase a piece that you really shouldn't commit before owning a house, vs to wait it out later in life.
P.S. since i play piano, there are grand pianos (sometimes even hydraulic music stands) to be thrifted from local facebook marketplace or music schools. if buying brand new, consider c.bechstein, blüthner (art deco designed), or shigeru kawai, with my preference on the warmer side of tone
We miss Raphael! More videos like this please !!!
Don't worry, Raphael hasn't gone anywhere! TH-cam's algorithm may make it seem like hosts aren't seen regularly, but we do our best to ensure there's an even split 🙂
We’ve just bought eachother a Mont Blanc fountain pen. Absolutely beautiful. Just like Ralph Lauren Purple Label. 🥂
Excellent! Did you go for matching or individual styles?
@ - individual style and individual ink color
Any style advice for cycling? It’s really much of a challenge keeping the trousers out of the wheel…
Could you do a house tour? Love all of the decoration!
Stay tuned for a closet tour! (That'll take quite a while 😂)
Barbour jacket is a good alternative too
A good suggestion! do you have a favorite model from Barbour?
Definitely the Beaufort. The older ones are made in England and are better than the new ones, which aren’t.
Leather wax coated lasted me for 32 years and I have it still
Piano in white ❤

The meat slicer reminded me my grand parents and dinners with them. Maybe I should buy one too.
That cowboy paint is a masterpiece. That one i shall buy. Will you sell, if so how much!!!!

Meat slicer was the plot twist
Audemars Piguet Edward piguet ref. 14918. I have the same watch in yellow gold. Excellent time piece and so so underrated.
The best beginner fountain pen is the pilot vanishing point
A good choice! Have you seen this video yet? www.gentlemansgazette.com/buy-first-fountain-pen/?
great video, oh my god that AP is incredible! who got that jewel from the team?
It's a beautiful watch! A lot of the watches we feature in the videos are loaned to us by our good friend Federico over at @FedericoTalksWatches
I never knew I needed a meat slicer until just now. How did I not know this? 😂
Right?!
Similar but as an Aussie, I have a proper Espresso machine for good coffee :)
It can be a piano or a really nice guitar. 😌🍸
Japanese chef knives 👌🏽
Nice! Any brand you'd recommend?
@ Shun knives, they are the Rolex and Montblanc of chef knives but Japan has many others extremely hand made high quality knives and a vast history in steel blade craftsmanship.
full closet tour please sir
my dad has a few mont blanc pens but he still prefers the $1 pilot pens
My “buy for life” items:
- Zippo Lighters
- Stanley (Thermos and flasks)
- GORUCK (Bags, Shoes, Training Gear)

Quality shaving items are a great suggestion! The only reason they didn't make the list is because not everyone shaves - still, when bought well they're a fantastic investment
A vintage art deco razor (or a gold Leaf razor)
When I think about signature hat I always think of the legendary Harry Anderson.

Meat slicer not on my bingo card, but I like it.
