I've had a fueling problem with my Mustang stopping the pump. I've learned to turn the nozzle upside down and it works but I'll definitely do this for an actual solution.
I recently had my Santa Fe fixed with this problem. All of my Canisters needed to be replaced and all my fuel lines replaced and worst of all they had to drop my gas tank and clean it all out because the charcoal beads got into it. Just one particular canister cost me $700, total for the job was over $1300. And that was a local shop I trust, not the dealer. Never going back to the dealer, I bought the vehicle at back in 2011. Got free oil changes for life but last year the last change I received took 2 1/2 hours, even though I had an appointment. Never again unless if's for a recall.
What happens if the gasoline fuel just overflow and comes out of the gas tank cap area when filling with gas? Sometimes my 2005 Ford F150 XLT has done that.
Fuel tank vent valve or vapor canister vent valve are two possible causes. This happened to me, and the fuel tank vent valve was bad. When I fill the tank after the pump shuts off automatically when the tank is full, I do not add any more fuel like some people do. When the tank is full and you put more fuel in, the fuel goes to the charcoal canister. Like the video states here there should be no fuel in the canister, and only fumes should be there.
My 2005 Impala has had that problem since I bought it (used) at 142,000 miles. I’ve learned to 1/2 squeeze the pump handle, just putting up with it for the past 5 years. 🤷♂️
I had a 1988 Honda CRX that would stop the pump after like. 80cents but if I pumped slow it would fill up fine... I never got around to looking into why but barley squeezing the pump handle seemed to work..
The nozzles are designed to shut off when fuel covers the sensing port at the tip of the spout inserted in your car. Turn it upside down to see the port. Typically if it shuts off it's FULL. Do not top off. The tank in the car is designed to have a certain amount of air space at the top (ullage). Again it's FULL. Stop rounding up to the penny and if need be, see someone about OCD. Dispensing equipment at the station can fail and wear out, but by topping off you're going to damage the car and the dispensing equipment. As an engineer working in the gas and oil dispensing industry for the past 25 years, take this mans advice and don't top off.

good information and the best description of how they work
If you have Yellow Sac spiders on your car, they might be the reason. We used to get them all over our 1998 Camry years ago and they would pack the vent tube coming from the evap canister with their webs. Easy fix if you know where to look.
If you flood the Charcoal canister by overfilling ,lots of problems. Yes ,especially on a long trip it ticks us off. My gauge occasionally shows almost 3/4 when it shuts off. Agravating.
Excellent video, but there's one step missed. Cars are equipped with roll over valves. On Fiats there is one where the filler neck meets the tank (part of the fuel tank) and a second that's part of the in-tank fuel pump. These, as the name suggests, keeps gas in the tank if the car rolls over and they can stick closed. These can often be unstuck with a light rap with a rubber mallet and filling the tank slowly seems to extend this "repair" for a longer time. For the fuel pump either a rap or blowing compressed air backwards can unstick it.
Don’t keep topping off aggressively, when pumping gas stops as it should you round up to the nearest 10 cents and you’re done. Too much topping off will ruin your evaporation canisters.
I don't get one critical aspect: Is the charcoal filter meant to filter the fresh air coming IN the vapor canister from the outside, or is it meant to filter the gas vapors from inside the canister before releasing them OUT into the atmosphere? As you can see, I'm still not sure if the charcoal filter + vent valve are a 2-way street between the vapor canister and outside air or just a 1-way street (and if so, in which direction)? Thank you so much!
Vapor canister or check the lines to the canister. Had an 05 Tahoe I bought from someone… don’t ask me why but there was some kind of what seemed to be pellets in those lines. Got them all out, fueled with no problem.
I noticed I had a kink in the filler neck. The rusty rear gas strap fell off and the filler neck which I had replaced not long before this was holding all that weight and when I replaced the strap and pushed the tank up it got a kink. Should be an easy fix but not in cold weather when the rubber is hard.
It's the corrugated sleeve on the gas pump nozzle. It must be compressed to enable pumping. Find an old gas pump without the corrugated sleeve to test before taking your car apart lol
How often should the canister be replaced, I have a 2014 Ram truck. I don't have any problem filling up but just wondering if these parts need to be replaced as preventative maintenance.
This happens to me on an Escalade at about all stations except Costco..asked attendant and told that they keep their pumps serviced and at full permitted presure....not so at other numerous station I have to use...imo
Both my GMC Sierra and my Vette as do 5 gal jugs do that. I"m sure it has something to do with the auto-cutoff based I suppose on the foamy looking bubbles it makes when filling. I simply adjust the spout on the filler and it'll stop.
I had this issue in a 2007 BMW 328ix Coupe I purchased used. Did some research, it ended up being the charcoal canister. The previous owner kept topping off the fuel, I knew this because the new one was practically half the weight of the old one.
Yeah ‘98 Altima has had this for probably 15 years. Unplug the hose from EVAP or Valve and you can fill up no problem (this was just a test. Didn’t leave it that way) They wanted $250 or something like that for that canister (just the part)
My 89 Jeep does NOT like modern pumps (old pumps work fine). It's often a fight trying different angles to point the pump nozzle, then holding it real steady.
I have 265,000 miles. This happens when begin fueling but after a few tries, it fills. With this many miles, should I replace canister ????????????????????????
Had an issue and it was the ethanol in the gas that caused the rubber “anti-siphon flap to swell. Just removed. I’ll take the chance on someone trying to steal gas from me
The attendant keeps trying to add more when the pump stops, now I have two cars that stop at half a tank, I was below half a tank and wanted to fill up for a long drive and the pump stops twice, the attendant stopped and put the handle back and I ended up getting two gallons of gas, if I fix these cars the attendant is just going to keep overfilling again anyway
This happens at only one gas station, I pull the nozzle out and pull trigger, gas comes out 100 gallons per minute, exaggerated. Put back In Car and shuts right off. More gas ends up on the ground than in my tank. I avoid that place.
My 2017 Malibu capless fill is frustrating to fill at pumps where the nozzle won’t go fully inserted…if the pump has wire type springs on the nozzle I try to screw it in and flip it upside down… tends to work. Regardless I never had an issue in my life with any other normal gas cap. Terrible design…If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
I've never understood why people top off their tanks. You're squeezing like 0.1 gallons in there, that's like 3 miles at most and you risk this happening.
This gas topping off problem never existed in the past, this tells me the people designing the cars do not know how the car is being used by the general public.

What if it only happens with some pumps only and not at other pumps?

Perfect I needed this video, my car is doing that and I’m sick of waiting at the pump in cold weather for 10-15mins
What happens if the gasoline fuel just overflow and comes out of the gas tank cap area when filling with gas?
Sometimes my 2005 Ford F150 XLT has done that.
Only the bad/lazy designed tanks do this.
Japanese, Korean makers have figured out how to keep the canister dry!

Thanks for the tip. Now I know I shouldn’t top off the fuel when I get low price fuel ⛽️

Excellent video. Good explanation of the process.
I have the same problem on my ram 1500 it's annoying. I'll definitely give this a check
My 08 Yukon is doing this now as we speak thanx for the info

I can usually put in another 1.5 to 2+ gals after the initial stoppage so why stop? If I stop when the pump first stops, the tank will not show full.
If you flood the Charcoal canister by overfilling ,lots of problems. Yes ,especially on a long trip it ticks us off. My gauge occasionally shows almost 3/4 when it shuts off. Agravating.
Presente en clases de mecánica automotriz, gracias por compartir información que ayuda, saludos desde Navojoa Sonora México 🎉
How much do these repairs typically cost?
Brand new truck does this AND my old one did it ---- I think it's the pump more often than the vehicle.
Great video! Thanks.
Easy Fix: Don't Stick The Nozzle All The Way In.
Never heard of this. Good video.

Great video. Good information. He is correct. When the pump shuts off. Stop trying to put in more fuel.

Generally it is the nozzle on the dispenser is bad. Not your car. I do maintenance for service stations.
Gracias se aprende mucho con ustedes

Evap check valve... Is that what gives you the evap check engine code? Or do have to do... A smoke test?

In stuck in Jersey, bot allowed to pump my own gas, attendeds love to round off the numbers

I did all of that and still I have that problem
I believe the hoses are clog up with carbon from the canister.
What do you think?
What is the CEL code a stuck valve gives off? I’m not having a problem filling up, but I am getting a p0456 on a V8 ‘08 S4.

I’ve changed these 2 and the purge valve. I still have the issue
Both my GMC Sierra and my Vette as do 5 gal jugs do that. I"m sure it has something to do with the auto-cutoff based I suppose on the foamy looking bubbles it makes when filling. I simply adjust the spout on the filler and it'll stop.
Some of that charcoal could have plugged up the purge line in which case you’ll still have the same problem.

I have same issue with my grand Cherokee, but like most here i turn nozzel upside down and fills up just fine.
Good Video, Thanks.
Thank you!
Good explication. 🙏🙏
good job
I love you man God bless you.
Thank god I found this video
EVERY container has expansion space at the top usually like 5% or less 😊
Great video
super awesome 👌🏾
I learned that from popular mechanic magazines. Excellent info.
They change my canisters and filters but same problem comin, what should i do?
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
My 89 Jeep does NOT like modern pumps (old pumps work fine). It's often a fight trying different angles to point the pump nozzle, then holding it real steady.
My Chevy truck started this when I had my tank replaced
definitely have this problem older ford dually truck 460, seems to get worse hotter daze outside
I have a Chevy Express when I go to older gas stations it never does it. It takes me forever to fill my tank at newer gas stations.
Which one of these problems will let you drive for a little while before the service engine light comes on
ive seen one car have gas bubble up in the fuel line causing the thing to turn off over and over
What happens when u replace both but still the same problem?
I replaced the canister and the solenoid and it still wont fill up no check engine light on?
by the way the charcoal canister can cost as much as $400.00 and up depending on vehicle, so don’t pump your gas past the click on refills.
Changed Evap canister and all the parts connected to it didn’t fix anything on my Yukon 2010
It is in Seldom as doesn't touch any one. very good job master.. i respect you 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Funny they use a Chevy bc they are all known for this!
I have 265,000 miles. This happens when begin fueling but after a few tries, it fills. With this many miles, should I replace canister ????????????????????????
Can this throw PO456 code?
Flip the nozzle upside down with the hose on the top and fill up. Problem solved.
Mann i from Los Angeles CA can i bring my car to you guys shop LOL 😅 2005 Ford Eddie Bauer 😅😂
Old school cars never had this problem. Even cars 30 years old this system still works like it should.
I have issue with this and p0448
Had an issue and it was the ethanol in the gas that caused the rubber “anti-siphon flap to swell.
Just removed. I’ll take the chance on someone trying to steal gas from me
I had a problem evetime i pumped gas to my car. it always stops when it reaches 20$. why?? please help.
My Avalanche and my Sierra both started doing this when the battery needed replaced. Simple.
What happens when the fuel spits back out at you?
what if it only happens on mondays?
The attendant keeps trying to add more when the pump stops, now I have two cars that stop at half a tank, I was below half a tank and wanted to fill up for a long drive and the pump stops twice, the attendant stopped and put the handle back and I ended up getting two gallons of gas, if I fix these cars the attendant is just going to keep overfilling again anyway
I have done all this but still can’t get my gas tank filled up properly. Can someone please help out?
Perfect
I have the same problem with my nissan nv3500 😢
Do ford specificity with capless gas crap
Valve didn’t need replacing, fire that parts canon
I have that problem with my silverado
Try this first: Pull the nozzle out an inch and re-start it.
If it’s a Chevy or GMC it’s the charcoal filter
Does this apply to GMC diesel pickups too
This happens at only one gas station, I pull the nozzle out and pull trigger, gas comes out 100 gallons per minute, exaggerated. Put back In Car and shuts right off. More gas ends up on the ground than in my tank. I avoid that place.
Turn the nozzle upside down.

Its the pump nozzle
How the heck could any insect live in an environment that had gas fumes in it the whole time?
Evap canisters cost way more than they should. $600!!!🙀🙀🙀
I've never understood why people top off their tanks. You're squeezing like 0.1 gallons in there, that's like 3 miles at most and you risk this happening.
Another nail in the ICE coffin
Just pull the nozzle out a bit.
