Multiple videos in replacing parts, but for some it makes sense to know the why certain component is actually failing, I watch this video as many other videos and all just replace the canister but no one said why is bad or what is bad in it. Reading the comments found out that by overfilling the gas tank some of that gas will pass to the canister and then damage the screen that hold the charcoal in it. Is easy to replace parts but some will like to know what actually went wrong. Hope this helps anyone, Thanks to
    "he's the Master

Wow, A really awesome video. I have never seen this repair or problem on a car before. It's always great to see and learn something new. It seems like the factory would have wrapped that whole assembly in plastic or something to keep the rust out. But like my brother says. They don't want things to last forever, lol. Jim, I hope you have a Blessed Fall So Far.

Hi Jim, what car/model is the one you showed up in your video. I own a Volvo S60 04' a side effect for not having air exit is that the gasoline drips out of the tank using the lowest point exactly on the fuel sender unit just behind the driver's seat. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and experience with us.

Thanks. Have a 05 Volvo S60 2.5t found out that the fuel filler neck vent pipe was leaking. Part discontinued through the manufacturer. Garage couldn't find one in my area. So they used epoxy. Picked it up and went to a gas station and can't put gas in my car. Alot of pressure coming out of the fuel filler neck. I know it is a emissions system problem. So I hope that the manufacturer still makes the carbon canister

Over filling the tank is the worst thing anyone can do. Eventually the gas gets into the EVAP canister may melt away a protective filter screen so the pellets get released
and then contaminates the whole system or seals up the filter and blocks the retention of vapors by the pellets. Newer cars may have a check engine light that goes on.
Rest it and it comes back day after day. You will need a new EVAP canister!

What do you think if my problem is related to EVAP or sending unit? My gas gauge is stuck at 3/4 (it goes to 0 when I turn off the car) and even though I'm using fuel (it should be maybe 1/4), it is still at 3/4 of tank. I can fill it up to max, until it starts clicking, but it is only 5.7 gallons and then the gauge goes to max, but always gets stuck at 3/4). I know for sure I should be able to to fill up more, but I can't put more. My tank is 16.1 gallons. It's BMW 2008. There is fuel smell inside the car. When I drive the car, then it is less noticeable, but once I turn it off and leave it overnight, then the smell is really really bad. Now, when I filled up 5.7 gallons, I tried to fill up more and it was clicking a lot, so maybe that destroyed EVAP system, not sure (well, probably it was destroyed before considering I couldn't put more then 5.7 gallons). After that I started noticing fuel smell.

This was true also for the first 10 or 11 years of owning my car. Now when I fill my tank, it only goes to about 260 miles. I was just wondering what the problem with my gas tank or car may be. Thanks in advance.

I've never "topped off" the gas though. Maybe someone in the household did?
Besides "overfilling gas" as a root cause, what else may have caused this issue? (gas flowing into EVAP canister) I'd hate to go through a canister replacement only to have this issue happen again a month down the road.

@angelocarazas1640 so yes I did. I ended up empting out the Canister and changed the evap as well there was a lot of coal or what ever those pebble things are , once I emptied the box I put everything back together , unfortunately it still kept happening. So I had to pull everything back apart ehat I ended up doing was disconnecting all the thick hoses off from the box and the gas tank and using a vacume to vacum out anything out if them and yea there was still a lot more pebbles on it. Once I did that I put everything back together and i didn't have the issue again.

Can you just remove the hose and let it vent?

I don’t think so, I’ve disconnected my hoses and for a while I was able to get a little more gas in the tank, but recently it seems like that’s slowly stopped working and I’m back to getting only a gallon in at a time. I’m going to replace the canister so hopefully it helps but if not I’m clueless.

So this happens when the gas filler neck is pushing out gas to fill up the tank ?

I have a question .. I have a Kia Sedona that has this exact problem, but it also has stalling issues, like going from an idle state and resuming acceleration, it always starts right back up though, this happens right in the middle of traffic at red lights. 😵‍💫
could these two issues somehow be related? Like air getting into the fuel delivery system somehow? Our mechanics cannot figure out why this car is stalling.

I know this old but fuel pump probably was failing.

Shouldn't you have an evap check engine light for this problem?

Thanks man I'm going to have my mechanic help me out to fix mine, I've been overfilling my tank because I drive hundreds of miles everyday. Apparently doing that makes this problem appear faster than normal. Mine used to never have this issue and then it just started doing it last week. I hope this is not expensive to get repaired

Just tried to fill up this morning and experienced this. Thought someone tried stealing from my empty tank.

Does this have anything to do with the gas used? I had a 1998 Thunderbird that did this. We would drive forever on four gallons of gas. Finally took the tank off and replaced it. Now, my 2004 Yukon is doing it. Is it the gas I'm using? Thanks.

My mechanic says as long as you are using regular fuel that is not the problem.
I thought it would go away if I only used premium fuel. Nope, the engine ran smoother, but the clicking still happened.

Unhooking the hose to the canister will it cause danger to the vehicle if you don't connect it back..

Most of the time it is caused buy topping off the fuel tank when the nozzle clicks off.

  • @adctex

Four years ago I spent over $500 to have my mechanic do this and a year later it started acting up again. For the next three years I found that if I would leave the engine running and hold the nozzle in a certain position, I could fill the tank (2005 Yukon). Well last week that method stopped working too... not good :(

Can you just leave the first lil hose hanging an just leave it go?
