  • Scotty Kilmer, mechanic for the last 46 years, shows how you can fix your car when the gas pump keeps shutting off as you try to refuel. A little blowing with cleaning out with air is often the simple fix.

    Scotty is right on about the evac canister hose. I have a 2016 Buick Verano and the first time I filled up the tank the gas nozzle would shut off after about 8-10 seconds. On the second fill up, I went to another station and the same thing happened. I took the car to the dealership and they did exactly what scotty does in the video. They ran compressed air through the evac hose cleaning whatever dirt/dust was trapped inside and now I have no problems what so ever. However, if cleaning the hose out with air doesn't work, the problem probably lies within the canister itself which may have to be replaced.

    Love your videos, Scotty! I have been shamefully driving a 99 Pontiac Grand Am SE for roughly 7 years. For the last 5 years, every time I put gas in my tank, my car struggles to maintain an idle therefore I have to hold my foot on the gas pedal to allow my car to idle at ~2,500 RPM for maybe 2-3 minutes before it idles normally again. After spending $800 in 2012 for a new fuel tank vent valve, evap canister, purge valve and valve near the tank, I still have this problem 4 years later. Only recently, it seems like my car's idle is only getting worse. While parked or at a stop light, I'll occasionally hear what sounds like two quick knocks, followed by my RPMs dropping, the car will rev itself a few times, two quick knocks, and then back to a steady idle. Recently after driving on the highway I came to a stop light where my car wanted to drive itself into traffic. I was holding my foot on the brake terrified while my car held 2,500 RPM, trying to accelerate forward. When I put it in park, the RPMs shot up even higher. I've never felt scared in my car until now and I'm thinking about "push, pull, or dragging" it in to get another vehicle, even though I don't think I could afford it.

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Kelly Hanus knowing those, the head gasket is probably starting to go out, or the engine is just flat wearing out inside, hence the knocking. Try my video "how to tell if your head gasket is blown"

      Nonconsensus Medicine ... Makes me wonder how dirt or bugs or anything gets into the tube. It's sealed inside the gas tank end and clamped on the other end... If the hose is plugged the rubber must be deteriorating on the inside. Bad hose. Also what about the check valve in the canister being stuck.?

    I just tried this on my 2006 Dodge Ram 2500, and it worked wonderfully. Couldn't get to the evap canister, so we disconnected the evap line just below the gas tube and some dirt fell out the end of the tube, then sprayed compressed air down that tube. You could hear the air go through it and then there was a soft pop and you could really hear the air flow after that, stuck valve in evap canister. After that I was able to fill up the tank as normal. The evap canister for this year is located above the gas tank and difficult to get to but the way we cleared the tube worked great, thank you so much for posting this video, you saved us a trip to the dealer and probably a lot of money.

I went to my local CO -OP mechanic and he analyzed my truck the code as "Sumptin be wrong with the evac cannister". I said ok, can it be fixed or replaced, he said yes. After he cleared the codes, for the second time in so many weeks, I thought you better ask Scotty (YOU) what to do. I was also having trouble filling the gas tank, now I know why. I'll tell you from first-hand experience that the charcoal canister should never be unplugged. I had the top of mine crack on my 93 Astro, and for a few weeks it smelled gassy and I couldn't pinpoint the problem. It got worse and was making me sick. I finally turned my head/nose in the right direction under the hood and the smell was ungodly! Immediately went to Pick N Pull and got another part and no more smell. So for those wanting to unplug it, I'd advise not to. Great video Scotty!

      I remember back when Super Leaded 105 octane was being faded out, the gas station I used to fill up my 73 Cutlass Supreme got rid of the Super Leaded pump and replaced it with a diesel pump. Being a stupid teenager, I just pulled my gas burning car, and just started filling up at the same pump I always did. About 5 gallons into the fill, I realized what I did. So, I cut the pump off and topped off the rest of the 20+gallon tank with super unleaded. Well, it ran, but it didn't run good, and the smoke it put out was crazy. I finally burned off the tank of diesel / gas mix and all was well. Of course, that was back in the day of forgiving carburetors.

    Sorry, when you fill your tank, and displace the air with liquid, the fumes do not go into the little charcoal canister, they are collected by the Vapor Recovery system on the fuel pump nozzle. Stored in a underground tank at the station, and returned to the refinery by the truck where they are destroyed, usually via oxidation. That charcoal canister under your hood is to collect gas vapors from your tank as you drive, and burn them off in small quantities by your induction sys. (That is also why you should never overfill your tank, as liquid will get into a system that only fumes should be).

    I wish people would do something about this here in Oregon, since we don't get to pump our own gas I got a job pumping gas and people flat out don't give a damn so we have to sit there for 10 minutes til they get enough gas to fill up their damn tank

    Sometimes it is the vapor cannister vent valve or fuel tank vent valve. I had this problem, and had to fill the tank with the engine running. The vapor cannister vent valve was not working. Also check the hoses that run into the vapor cannister from the gas tank or to the purge valve to see if there are any cracks in them. I had a cracked hose, and a check engine light on. The code was 0442, and the cracked hose was the problem. As cars age the rubber also deteriorates and the hoses can crack.

    cars have idle up valves, when you turn the steering wheel, that activates the switch to set the idle up to compensate for power steering use. If you are just shaking the wheel, you confuse that system, turning that switch on without actually using the steering. so, stop doing it.

    Wow! I have a 2009 Sonata that has had this issue for 8 months and I paid a mechanic $80 to replace some part to fix it and it was not fixed and check engine light has stayed on. Today, I filled it up with gas using the method of holding the pump nozzle UP instead of down and it filled the tank all the way with no problem and clicked off! Then low and behold, some miles down the road I notice that the check engine light is turned off for the first time in 8 months! MIRACLE!

  • @TheBeardedDog
    @TheBeardedDog 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good video. I have been troubleshooting the evap system on my car for several hours. I fixed a solenoid that had a bad ground, and inspected the evap charcoal canister. The canister seems to allow air through at low pressure. I tried blowing back into the tank through the vent and that was clear. I was just able to fill up the tank on my car though, but only after disconnecting the inlet hose for the charcoal canister. So it appears I have a bad canister. No problem, replace it. Too bad Mazda discontinued the part with no replacement and no one has one. I will probably have to figure out a way to bypass the charcoal canister. Thanks for this tip though, at least now I know where the problem is.

    Scotty I watch allot of your videos and I bought a lemon, I was trying to put gas into my vehicle the other day and the gas pump kept shutting off and gas would spray out at me, it had gas everywhere, that being said I think the EGR valve is bad also, I am sure of it along with the fuel injector pressure sensor. That all said your awesome for doing these videos for people like me and many others, Thanks Scotty....

    na, I haven't done any , cause I'm not really a body man. to fix rust correctly, it has to be cut old, new metal welded on, then painted with primer and then the final paint on top of that. a BIG messy job. You can use bondo or fiberglass of course, but it will just continue rusting and falling apart over time that way
