I read that Miyagi was working on a manuscript that contained all he learned that was supposed to become in like a "Goju Ryu Bible" but it was destroyed during WWII and Miyagi didn't felt like re-do all this work again. Its a shame such valuable document, as well as others, were lost during the War.
2. Chojun Miyagi inherited Kanryo Higaonna's position as instructor in the Naha Commercial School, as well as also becoming, through the introduction of his student Miyazato, the physical instructor in the Okinawan Prefecture Police Academy. These two position are significant because many of his students studied in the school and latter Chojun Miyagi found jobs for them within the Okinawan Police. Most of his key students were at one time in the police force, Higa, Miyazato, Shinzato, Iha etc.
I don't practice Goju Ryu but I'm really into the history of all arts & your videos are extremely informative. I really appreciate the research you do to produce all the content you've put on your channel!
Dear sir, if you would like to know more information on kata origin from the point of view of gojuryu and touonryu comparison, please feel free to contact me pdemyanov@gmail.com
Interested to learn why you'd say Miyagi sensei might have studied bagua zhang (八卦掌) (this style of gong fu uses zhang not quan in its name). Bagua is a very northern style and Fujian is a southern province. The footwork in bagua is also very circular, completely unlike goju or in any style of karate. It's also grouped with the internal martial which are very different to karate.
Hello, I have been following your channel for a few months and I really like it. I would like you to make a video about Masanobu Shinjo. I belong to his lineage and I would like more people to know about him.
In 1912, at the beginning of the Taisho era, following the annexation of Okinawa to Japan, the Japanization or 'correction' of the pronunciation of Okinawan surnames was decreed (with no change to the kanji characters). Miyagusuku or Miyagushiku became Miyashiro. In 1920, at the end of the Meiji era, another reform of surname pronunciation was decreed. Subsequently, Miyashiro became Miyagi. The original pronunciation of Miyagi and Miyashiro in the native language of Okinawa was Miyagusuku or Miyagushiku.
I've met Vassie Naidoo Sensei and Johnpaul Sensei in Hong Kong when they came here to give a seminar. How is he doing? Do you also train with him? Not all sons do.... He and Johnpaul Sensei would be much better examples to give this oral history. I just bought Johnpaul Sensei book last week in Amazon and it blows this guy's "remake of history" out of the water.
Thanks for the shout out. But please, let the kid do his thing. I was younger too and I wrote a lot of research back then. Some of the data points he speaks of, I wrote personally. It was free and public and, here 20 years later, I can honestly say a large majority of that research was wrong or based on hypotheticals. Don't blame them for the misconceptions. I'll take the blame. So many people cut, paste and regurgitated that research to a point that it still exists as the majority of historic record through today. The exact reason I wrote my book was to make a well-detailed and publicly available research document, based on verifiable facts of historical record.
1. Chojun Miyagi made one trip to Fujian Province (or Hookkien as pronounced in Fujian dialect) in 1915 with Eisho Nakamoto, and a second trip there in 1916 after the death of Kanryo Higaonna, this time with Go Kenki (Go Ken Ki - that's his name pronounced in Fujian dialect, because in those days, they did not speak modern Chinese in Fujian. In fact you'll find most Goju-Ryu Kata names exactly matched up with local Hookkien pronunciations rather than the modern Chinese)
Thanks for this comment! I intend to go more into depth on Miyagi's trips to Fujian Province and his trip to Hawai'i in a future video in this series, but I wanted to keep the length short.

No no no no no. So much of this history is skewed. I just trolled your other video and made a similar comment that this is way above your head and out of your league. You're adding hypotheticals and personal opinions into history which further skews the accuracy and truth. At the same time, you're presenting historic details, Thought to be accurate and true, from over 20 years ago instead of using the most up-to-date and or recently discovered historic records which most modern researchers access through variety of digital research archives. In other words, what your presenting here is harmful to your own style thus diminishing your credibility.

Man, this really brings back memories. When I was kid I studied Nisei GoJu Ryu. It's a style that combines Goju Ryu with elements of Shaolin Kung Fu.
Wow, sounds like a pretty interesting style

Excellent video, thank you very much, greetings from Mexico
I’m late to this channel but I love your work! Thank you for the great information and entertaining delivery. Good work my friend.
Have you ever considered doing a history video on Goju and its influences its the movie Karate Kid. Maigi-do karate. And also in Cobra Kai.
The fictional character of Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid franchise was named after Chojun Miyagi.
I was always under the impression that Mr. Miyagi from Karate Kid was supposed to be a descendant, or nephew of some kind, to Chojun Miyagi.
@@VanishingNomad Could be.
From the kata that Miyagi teaches Danny suggests his teacher could be more accurately be Mabuni Kenwa

Correct and my Sensei was in Love with all the movies
God Bless
That was a very interesting story, I would like to know more of the history of Goju-Ryu
Update for the previous post. The Goju Ryu history book was www.amazon.com/dp/B094Z6Z8PD. It's is a different link here in Hong Kong.
I don't see the comment you wrote me about. Was it deleted?

Do one on the 'special skills' Miyag demonstrated,
particularly his toe kicks.
Will you do a video like this on isshinryu karate

Any good Goju books you recommend?
Anybody know what happened to ol’ boy here?
When he was fourteen and cleaned the Dojo? This would be an area of interest of facts related.-Ernie Moore Jr.
quan in Mandarin is pronounced more like chw + Anne, not kw + on.
I can't resist...
Are you keeping your hair long because of Gogen ?...😸
No, right now its cause hair salons aren't open haha!
So which master is on a mystic level in your opinion? And have you found any supernatural/spiritual techniques kr abilities?
Do a video on the African American service men whom never got the recognition they deserved for bring the art to the USA.

Modern Chinese?.....do the dozens of other Chinese dialects today aren't modern?....
Any plans on doing some research on the current Goju masters such as Ron van Cleef Sensei?
POV: ur her after watching Cobra Kia or Karate Kid
Quan is pronounced more like "ch"uan" in Cantonese.
