Goju Ryu Philosopher
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 27 มี.ค. 2014
What's up everyone? I'm an eternal Shodan in Goju-Ryu who has recently branched out into Kyokushin and Muay Thai. I make videos about the history, practice, and yes philosophy of Goju-Ryu karate. Current grad student, which is why my videos are like that.

Reading Recommendations for Karate
มุมมอง 6916 หลายเดือนก่อน
Since I’ve been asked a time or two, I decided to put together a list of book recommendations so that you too can become a Goju-Ryu Philosopher! There are a lot of books about karate out there, but the majority of them are aimed at beginning or prospective students. I’ve done a decent amount of work finding the few that are useful for advanced practitioners, history enthusiasts, and all-around ...

I'm back from my long hiatus! What have I been doing during these almost three years away from the channel? Well, let's just say it's been a fun ride!
Is Karate LETHAL
มุมมอง 2.9K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Well, is it? A lot of karate styles and dojos teach that karate techniques are designed to kill one's opponents, sometimes because they believe that their techniques are "too dangerous for the ring" or "used to defend peaceful Okinawan peasants from marauding samurai". Obviously, it is not too deadly for the ring, since many MMA fighters use their karate training to defeat their opponents. And ...

How Did We Get Kata - Stage 4: Ryukyuan Kata
มุมมอง 9113 ปีที่แล้ว
It is the final video in this series (or is it? yes it is): how kata got adapted to the Ryukyuan culture that they found themselves in. Because as it turns out, a Chinese martial artist probably wouldn't do their techniques the same way that a wealthy businessman on Okinawa would! The version with all of the segments strung together will come out when I'm dang well ready. Sources: 「沖縄空手剛柔流」玉野十四...
How Did We Get Kata - Stage 3: Condensed Kata
มุมมอง 8343 ปีที่แล้ว
Last time we talked about solo kata, which came into existence when martial artists needed to practice their two-man drills without the benefit of having an actual partner to practice with. This stage of kata took those forms and condensed them down into something that could reasonably be practiced in a small space, and a small amount of time, and also hid them from the watchful eyes of Qing Dy...
How Did We Get Kata - Stage 2: Solo Kata
มุมมอง 9503 ปีที่แล้ว
Last time we talked about kumite kata, Tamano Toshio Sensei's term for the prearranged sets of paired drills that were the forerunners of kata, and which still exist today in Judo and Koryu Bujutsus. However, when us karateka think of kata, we know that they are generally practiced on their own: as solo kata. This is stage two of kata development, and is where we start to see kata that look lik...
How Did We Get Kata - Stage 1: Kumite Kata
มุมมอง 1.3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
The first stage of kata was kumite kata. What does that mean? Basically what it sounds like! Watch to learn all about it. Sources: 「空手の心」渡口政吉著 「沖縄空手剛柔流」玉野十四雄著 「今、使える!術技修得システム宮城長順の沖縄空手に空手を学ぶ」玉野十四雄書
How Did We Get Kata? Part 1
มุมมอง 2.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Toguchi Seikichi publicized a long-kept secret theory telling us how to interpret our kata and understand the real fighting techniques that they were trying to teach us. This theory is called the kaisai no genri, and it's one of the most important parts of Goju-Ryu karate. But how did he and his teacher, Miyagi Chojun Sensei, arrive at this theory? Simple: by studying the history of how the kat...
Hey I Got Monetized That's Cool Thanks Guys!!!

Not a serious in depth one like usual, since I'm finishing off my degree. This is just a thank you to everyone here who got me to this point, and also a belated answer to the Q&A I said I was doing at 500 subs. Thanks y'all, and be back with a real one soon.
Traditional Martial Arts
มุมมอง 3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This is it, the moment we've all been waiting for, my obligatory "what is a traditional martial art" video. As it turns out, a traditional martial art is a very tricky thing to define, and it took me 27 whole minutes, not to mention a lot of weird turns of phrase. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to all of the many other martial arts TH-camrs who have covered this topic before me, whose videos ar...
You Are Not A Samurai
มุมมอง 1.6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I'm so sorry to tell you that there are quite a number of reasons why you are not a samurai, just because you practice karate or anything. This video is just a gentle reminder that you shouldn't glorify or mystify your own practice too much, and also an excuse for me to talk about how badly the Satsuma Rebellion failed, and how much I dislike Antony Cummins. Share this with your samurai friends...
The Most Important Self-Defense Skill
มุมมอง 1.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey would you look at that, the best self-defense advice anyone will ever give you, and it's in this handy dandy TH-cam video. In all seriousness, yes, breakfalls are the most important self-defense skill because falling is the most realistic danger, not crowbar murderers. I personally have used my ukemi a number of times in the past few weeks just cause I like to fall down apparently. Sources:...

Karate ni Sente Nashi: Karate's Philosophy of Nonviolence
Nice simple explanation
I'm a Hapkido 6th Dan. 10 years ago I decided that my throws needed to be better. Hapkido does do a lot of throws but most of them are joint lock related. Hapkido does have a strong Judo influence so I decided that cross training in Judo was the answer to improvement. Ten years later I have a Judo Shodan. It turns out that Judo is more sophisticated than I thought in the beginning. A Wado Ryu Nidan friend of mine wanted to teach more of the throws in that karate style so I told him to take some Judo, who better to teach it than the guys and gals who do 1,000 throws per practice.
Great work mate, I've been doing Muay Thai for about 2 months now and it's absolutely amazing
I'm a bit late, but great to see you back 👊
Thanks for this! Si men, as a form, is ubiquitous among Fukien derived styles, and more generally 'southern' systems.
На канале о единоборствах самое ненужное-- это говорящая голова!.. Раздражает.
Made in Pakistan (hidden info) but more expensive than Made in Japan top brands. Money philosophy.
Enjoy your information.
Could you please do a history lesson on jiu-jitsu styles? Including Differentiation between each countries and how their styles compare to each. I think you would explain it well.
Fortunately for me, i use karate to pretend I'm a Power Ranger, rather than a samurai. Although there IS some overlap.
Thank you Sir for sharing your knowledge of Goju Ryu to us all. Living in Puyallup WA. this is outside of Seattle WA.
Look harder. Tomoe Nage (although not called that) is clearly listed as technique 24 in the Bubishi. You know; the "Bible of Karate".
Look up combat ki juko ki I think you would like that
I strongly believe Shinzato sensei was the intended successor of the style. Miyagi-sensei was doing things with him that he wasn't with his own sons. You dont build a bond like that and not feel that person should inherit it. I suspect after the loss of Shinzato sensei, Miyagi felt like it didn't really matter from who was left.
As a complement, Shodokan keeps two versions of the Sanseru kata, Higashionna no Sanseru and Miyagi no Sanseru. They are very similar.
Cool. That took courage.
Love this!
Nice clinch 👍👍
I trained Uechi ryu and it is simular to Goju. It uses standing clinches. I've done judo and bjj and clinch fighting is a great strategy.
Great stuff! It takes alot of courage to get in their! Did you find that it is difficult to use techniques when the fight starts? Just remember to stay focused and tell yourself to actively think!
Congrats and great work. Very inspirational. Do you still train goju ryu? Would you recommend goju for self-defense, or is something like Kyokushin or Muay Thai a better option?
For a tidbit, i read that old karate has shoulder strikes. They could be nice when done in the clinch.
For extra damage, you MUST make sound effects. It is proven that a kiai or oui adds 50% more effect to any technique!
Thanks for sharing this - as a karate (goju) practioner, looking for some cross training ideas, this is gold 👍
I had no idea you're in the Puget Sound! Did you study Goju out here, or somewhere else?
Thanks for sharing
Could you post another video to see how you are going now, I would like to see your progress
Great video! New sub, enjoying your channel.
The part about Yamaguchi killing a tiger? I'm sorry, but i find that hard to swallow, no matter how good of a martial artist you are, no way anyone can kill a 500lb tiger!
Many paths up the mountain, same moon we see on top. Doing something new can be frustrating but also very rewarding. I started with Goju Ryu as a kid, switched to Shito Ryu in college, and switched again to Shotokan in grad school. Then moved home and got into Muay Boran. Now getting into boxing. Hope to learn Jujitsu some day. I still consider karate as my fundaments. I love how you honor your teachers from past to present. Your art is not a style but a living history of the people who taught you along the Way. Keep training and growing!
Uechi Ryu is also related to Goju, and their original 3 Kata were Sanchin, Seisan, and Sanseiryu, so that's pretty similar To-on Ryu.. And if you look at these 3 or 4 main Kata, they are more similar to each other than any of them are to any other Kata.
His students more than certify his rank👍 I trained under Thomas Bennet a black belt of his and the training was realistic and awesome!
I like how you have the okinawan english wordbook in the background. My favorite dictionary
I prefer Okinawa Goju-Ryu Karate-Jutsu
I don t agree. If the Okinawan Karate and refers to Bubishi, and Bubishi is a military manual.. then Karate was practiced also from noble families practicing some type of jujutsu..which is military. Then why to make so sophisticate movements for the control of your body if this not superior on the use of a muscle in let s say combat sport. FInally why they should study kyusho points which in some cases result in the death of the opponent.
Yes but the founder of karate Anko Itosu, well also known as the grandfather of karate wrote “karate was never intended to be used in the arena or battlefield but rather for criminals and ruffians for self defense”
@@AyeJordan7 it depends. The kung fu it was connected with, and related to was for the battlefield
One of Urban's students, Joe Lopez, ended up splitting from Peter and started training under Gosei Yamaguchi. He eventually opened the New York Goju Kai, with its largest facility on Park Row in downtown New York. Lopez had an excellent and very strong, traditional dojo with many blackbelts training with him for a long time.
Rules are for the herd. be water my friends
Urban was a real nutjob and his karate sucked! Morio Higaonna is the GOLD STANDARD for GojuRyu! Oyama karate is the best fighting karate worldwide.
Very good Arigato gozaimas namaste 🙏
Hi bro I did kyokushin till 5th Kyu but I'm thinking of moving to a softer style like Goju ryu.
Well... WKF pretty much put the nails on karate coffin. I mean, it made karate get recognition, bur what it cost?
I very much enjoyed your video. But you have missed one important aspect of Kata practice. POWER generation. All of the Goku Kata not only contains self defence and movement but there is a whole curriculum inside the Kata that demonstrates power generation the Goju way. It is hidden in plain sight.
glad your back mate
Hi, thank you for the book recommendations. Since you are asking for other good books I would like to refer to Henning Wittwer (gibukai) and his German books on karate history. Besides his German books he also translated his findings into English. Especially his - "Karate History: Collected Essays" and - "Higaonna Kamesuke: on Karate in Okinawa, Japan & Hawaii" should be of interest for you. But also his - "Funakoshi Gichin Introduction to Karate - Translation & Analysis" and - "Funakoshi Gichin & Funakoshi Yoshitaka: Two Karate Masters" are outstanding. Kind regards
Impresionante trabajo!!. Muchas gracias por las recomendaciones de lectura.
Welcome back! Glad to see you're back and running with other styles!
This is awesome! I too grew up doing Goju-ryu and have more recently transitioned to boxing and k1 kickboxing. Maybe Muay Thai is next up!
Please keep making videos! I love this channel! I think many more viewers will come with time. I think you had already stopped making videos when I first found this channel.
That's the plan! I've got a few more ideas in the works already. Thank you for the support!
Thank you for the kind words, friend!
You absolutely deserve them!
Finally!!!
