Any history of Goju-kai itself cannot leave out Jitsui Yogi, Chojun Miyagi's student and Gogen's partner - nor Gogen's main students apart from his son -Yamaguchi Gosei, these were Shuji Takashi, Yamamoto Gonnohyoue and Akio Takahashi, these were his fighters/enforcers - if any dojo got out of hand, he'd send 2 of these there to have a kumite match with the instructor in-charge, and they soon fell in line. Would be interesting if you could dig up information about them.

One thing I don’t understand is why do people think that Master Miyagi appointed Master Yamaguchi as his successor. His instructions were to spread Goju Ryu through the mainland due to Yamaguchi’s skill, spirituality, and knowledge of mainland Japanese Society (being born on the mainland and having strong a strong network there), Master Yamaguchi was the best choice for this pursuit. I think it’s less appointing him as a successor and more giving him his blessing to spread the art as many masters would do in the future with other countries from my understanding.

This video is great. As a student who can trace lineage via Peter Urban and Yamaguchi Sensei, it was always a challenge to know...how far from the goju tree are we, and in the end, does this matter? Is our karate solid?

Nice wrap-up of Yamaguchi Gogen. As a side note the Japanese established Manchukuo to create a buffer against communism on the Asian mainland, where they saw Stalin and Mao and their followers as serious threats. But as we know the Japanese Empire eventually fell, and a huge swathe of Asia eventually succumbed to communism...

Both Gogen Yamaguchi and Mas Oyama were colorful "self promoters". Personally I think most of these stories Yamaguchi related were exaggerated or outright fabrications. Oyama's "Bull fighting" was also a bit fraudulent, certainly not depicting the monster size Spanish Bulls which decorate the mural in his Dojo.
Yamaguchi's Shinto/Shamanistic "Black Arts" with crystal ball and his claim to have communications with the "dead masters" is yet again more "bull"! Anyway, none the less, I would have given my right arm to have been in the Dojo where Yamaguchi and Mas Oyama were photographed sparring! Those must have been special times!

Did Yamaguchi volunteer to go to Manchuria in 1939? Knowing what the imperial army was doing there at the time, gotta say that anyone who’d volunteer to go there with the army is an absolute sadist psychopath. Really sick stuff. No surprise that he attracted the kind of people who followed him if this is the case.

The part about Yamaguchi killing a tiger? I'm sorry, but i find that hard to swallow, no matter how good of a martial artist you are, no way anyone can kill a 500lb tiger!

GM Gogen Yamaguchi Is Our Gojukai Grand Master.
He Is Guided Directly By GM Chojun Miyagi Directly & He Understand Goju ryu Philosophy & Teaching Is More Than You.
You Said, He Teached For Three Year From GM Chojun Miyagi, Well For Genius Is Enough To Understoond Those Philosophy Teaching Fastly For 3 Year.
Can You Understood Gojuryu From The Basic To Master Level in 3 Year???
The Fist Symbol Of Gojukai Is To Honoring GM Master Chojun Miyagi as "God Of Fist".
as You Called "Claim As Succesor",
Is There are Refute/DissAcknowledge Ment From GM Chojun Miyagi To GM Yamaguchi.
East Culture Teach Us To Respect Elder & Ancestor & Gojuryu Is Product Of East Culture. Don't Diss Respectfull Gaijin.
