GTO Wiring Harness Preventative Maintenance: Fix Your GTO Before It Gets More Difficult!

  • The body control module wiring harness cluster is a well-known problem on these 2004 to 2006 Pontiac GTOs, and even if your GTO is fine right now, you should perform this preventative maintenance to make sure it stays fine. The wires gradually get rubbed through, causing weird electrical issues that tend to be different every time. Between that and the limited working space in there, it's FAR better to do this as preventative maintenance instead of as an electrical repair.

    Yeah mine had that electrical tape under the cloth tape too. Im guessing its factory because it didnt seem to me like you could put the cloth tape back after you undo it, I had to cut mine. It was worn thru the cloth tape but not the wires luckily. Thanks for this video I really appteciate it, well done!

    Great video!
    You ain't lying about those foot well lamps😅 those suckers will quickly blister the flesh if they are left on for any length of time. Great place for some new LEF lamps.
    That black tape you found in the harness was common though the 80's & 90's, not sure about in these GTOs, but I know I found it on my 3rd and 4th gen Camaros that I owned.
    The split loom is a great idea for protecting those electrical wires. 👍🏾

    Good video! My '04 had some issues that I traced back to that same bundle! I found no electrical tape on mine under the factory wrap, although I left a bit on there when I was done! I had three or four wires rubbed bare against that metal panel.

      Three or four sounds like there could have been some interesting electrical issues happening before you fixed it!

    Just used your video to check and protect the wiring in my 2005 GTO. I also had the black tape on what looks like the same wires after taking off the wrap, so this appears to be the way the factory made them. I bought my GTO with 1,100 miles on it from the original owner, so this was the first time it has been opened. There were no wires damaged after 40K miles, but my interior lights do not work and blow the fuse so I'm still looking for what is causing that. Thanks for your video!

    2004 gto. Just check my wiring harness. The factory tape was rubbed through and a few wires were starting to rub through but never got to the copper. My harness does have 2 wire farther up the harness that have a poor electric tape job on them i think its factory lol.

    My gto has been sitting for a year because I couldn't find out what was wrong with it. The windows wouldn't roll up or down, airbag light, stuck in limp mode, and at one point I was completely Locked out of the car and had to break in because doors are electronically controlled. I have my car completely torn apart trying to chase down these issues, now I'm not completely sure if my bcm is fried. For the love of God do this preventative maintenance or you will be stuck with an oversized paperweight. I have considered throwing in the towel and installing a Holley EFI system.

    I had electrical tape on my x3 #10 pin which is the radio on signal, and I also have issues with my radio stating on but not sure what I could change under the electrical tape. They basically soldered another wire into it which I don’t know if it was factory or not

    I have been having an issue with the “airbag fault” sensor coming up I took it to the dealer and they deleted the code but a month later the same thing came up. I took it back and they told me it no longer appears on there scan tool so its an electrical issue. Could this be causing that?

    • @CarsSimplified
      @CarsSimplified  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't recall if the airbags communicated with that body control module for sure, but if I had that problem on my GTO, this wire bundle would be the first thing I would check.
