Pontiac GTO Some GTO Sorting (Wiring is a MESS)

- So this Pontiac GTO has wiring issues as well as some other complaints. We are sorting it out for the gentleman and trying to make sure that this car is safe to hit the road. What we found working on this GTO was honestly said....the state that they left some of this wiring in was utterly unsafe. Come see.

About you saying the positive cable was a reall bad thing, understatement of the year. Poor GTO was all hacked up. HOLY SHIT!! That test light should have never lit up. That harness is fucked. Crossed batt to acc...who knows what wires are fried. Your buddy gave you a really nice FLIR camera. Nice job Joe. Stay safe, God Bless.
That's a hell of a gift. Old school power draws. I saw that test light bright, I was like start pulling fuses! Lol

I had to revert back in time to an external regulator on a 97 Jeep Cherokee that the computer controlled regulator took a siesta. Battery was dying and the Alternator was fine.
Seemed the computer decided if and when it charged. Had enough of that ! Although the voltage gauge in the instrument panel is corrupt after startup it works just fine. And the computer was replaced prior to that for stalling out issue. Figures its right after Computer Warranty expired. Sometimes a bypass is a better / cheaper solution to a problem .......

Joe I do remember that right hand fender solenoid. Replaced many and jumped many but they were cheap and easy to get to. Always kept a spare. Hope all is good with family Artie❤️

Regulator mounted to the firewall? Solenoid mounted to the fender? What are you talking about? Unfortunately, I'm old enough to know all too well. That contraption mounted to the top of the intake manifold will throw some younger players off too! Nice work on this one, Joe. It's a miracle that battery cable didn't catch that thing on fire.

Very common problem on older Pontiac's. Positive wire to starter touches exhaust manifold. We would wrap it in 60's and 70's with asbestos tape ( yes i know, asbestos ).
Can't say I've ever seen an entire harness in such bad shape but comes close to my '49 ford with the cotton covered harness where (everywhere) all the cotton rotted away years ago.

I had Pontiacs, the positive wire in the tube should also have braided heat resistant tubing where it is inside the tube down close to the starter.

Awesome brother... I am dealing with Christine in my 1970 GTO lol.. Electrical nightmare - this winter I'm going with a Painless setup - She has all original / electrical tape harness.. lol

In all trades you got to have the right tools to make good use of time.
That is a large current draw. I remember the test light method.

I already know that you are expected to do superhuman things for peanuts. obviously another great video.
If that arcing on the positive battery cable would have happened on a modern engine management system the results might be a fried computer unless there was protection in place.
I have a 69 got and I took all the wiring out after a 6inch stretch of wire caught fire. It was wired almost the same.. But I bought a universal harness (GM) and I just ripped that out because I have ADHD and I can't follow any directions on paper. I can file patents and I have invented quite a few products but again, ADHD so I saw no money.. lol.. Its helping animals though "Pet N' Place". I started wiring it but im a little confused as I've never rewired anything on a car before. Self educated myself to the point where I just need the tac to operate with the MSD Unit Number 6200. Built my own wiring harness and diagram.. but its close to the original with modern fuses.. Any Suggestions on the MSD?

I believe it was simply people messing with wiring causing this. Radio repairs for these? Hmm, I am not certain of who would do that.

those tubes that had the battery cable to the starter was a problem back in the day. the insulation on the wire wouldnt hold up to the oil leaks. people always replaced the cables with heavier wire which meant there wasnt enough air space and theyd melt again. its a shame that thing is so messed up. needs a harness complete. theres a place in california that makes them still.

I've been wanting to get a thermal imager. Now they just said everyone entering the Sema show will have to walk threw a thermal imager.
65 Shelby hammered for 3.5 million. Some people have more money than they know what to do with.
Spare no expense on the restoration. Also... Do the wiring as cheap as possible.

@@JoesAutoElectric hey Joe ive got a question for you??? ive got a 2009 chevy Silverado its been making some strange vibrations that you can feel under floor board and sometimes when you turn to the left you can feel a sorta bind almost like a wheel bearing. today the service brakes soon message came up in the Dic panel could a wheel bearing cause that??? any ideas would be appreciated thanks.

thats how i did a current draw check many moons ago 200 ma or higher when bright all that wiring was hacked! harness time joe try to stay cool with this heat wave coming
Why did they jump the fuse block
My best guess is they were chasing a voltage drop issue, which was the burned connection inside the box. Instead of diagnosing it and fixing it, they simply started jumped it out to battery power...very very high level as you can see.

I hate people who screw around doing 💩 electrical work... either do it right or keep your stupid hands off stuff you're too incompetent to deal with...

Old Fords used Bendix type starters GM's had starter coleniods maybe you over complicated the system

25 years of racing dirt circle track cars, ALWAYS added a Ford solenoid on the chevys. Header heat tends to burn wires. Way more reliable.
