Jeralt wasn’t 40 when Rhea gave her blood; he was very young, Rhea even describes him as being barely an adult… He’s been aging, albeit far more slowly due to the Major Crest he has; probably would be able to live several hundred more at least if he wasn’t killed.

Im more upset that Judith isn't playable in the game. Every route has 2 exclusive characters besides the house leaders, Verdant Wind doesn't have any since Hilda can be recruited out of house in some routes

In Fates they indirectly give the ages of the Royals. Hinoka was 7 when she began training as a Pegasus knight and that was after Corrin was kidnapped. The kidnapping took place 15 years prior to the main game so Hinoka is 22. If Corrin is younger they are at most 21 and Ryoma is 23 at the youngest.
I remember reading somewhere thar similar reverse engineering put Xander's age as close to 30 since Xander has the clearest recollection of what Garon was like before the events of Fates. Don't quote me on that since idk if ang of Fates' characters have canon ages.

It's a bit of a mess and never outright confirmed, but I always took it as her possibly (likely) being an artificial human created through magic, instead of a human born from a mother. But that would still make her a human(-esque), just not a naturally born human. But it's open to interpretation for sure
While it has always been weird to me that Byleth can romance their students, that is more so because of the power dynamic than the ages, because after the timeskip, while byleth may have been born 26-27 years ago they have only lived for 21-22 of those years making them essentially the same age as most of their students
I don't think we can judge Alear for the 1000 year age gap considering they spent their last 1000 years slumbering without really aging. This is the one case were age really is just a number, as Alear hasn't really lived all those years, so they're functionally just 17. Completely unlike Jeralt, who actually lived all those 300 years
I do get the 300 year old age gap being weird but 21 and 29 is literally about the same age gap as my parents and while I would understand if you wanna avoid like lets say 18 and 26, you are 100% an adult by 21. Something I came across-- So you would assume Gregor from Awakening is around 30-40 with how he talks about himself, but if he is the father of Severa she will tell him something like "I'm closer to your age than you think." When I learned about Hector being "only 17" I was shocked! I always imagined him being in his mid 20's. Since then I just play with my head canon of Hector being 26 and that plays out very well. I think that suits him better than being 17. Entertaining video btw, good job!

Here’s one more (potential) set of weirdos from Genealogy; Oifey and Shannan. For important year bench marks, the game starts in 756, Gen 1 ends in 760, and Gen 2 takes place through 776 and into 777. In Chapter 1 we get Shannan’s age of 4 in the year 756, while in the prologue we find that Oifey is 14 years old! Now, most child units have less obviously defined ages, but Seliph is one of the oldest, which him being born halfway into the Agustria conflict should put him at being born in 758 and being 19 in 777 (though I’ve seen a lot of stuff say he’s 17), so this is an upper bound. This means that the oldest character in your army that Oifey can theoretically marry is 19 at a time when he’s… 35!? What’s worse, he has a paired ending with Fee, who is a rare instance of a child being born after the end of Gen 1, so at the absolute oldest she’s 17. Oifey skipped the +7 in “half your age + 7”… Shannan’s paired endings are Patty, who is also more than likely born after the end of Gen 1, or Larcei, who is his cousin…
Why do people think its weird to have a student thats older then their teacher? Its completely normal and it happens a lot in reallife as well. Okay, bit late to the chat, but I think I have a headcanon of why some characters in Engage suffer a case of "younger than they look". Mainly, the humans of Elyos age faster than average humans compared to the rest of the humans in Fire Emblem universe, but in return, they develop and grow faster. Basically, Engage populace go through a slightly accelerated human growth cycle.

What is always lowkey kinda annoying about these arguments is more often than not missing the context of the game for being medieval and fantasy. Applying real life modern morality is just pointless at best. Calling it weird for Jeralt to fall in love in his age is just unnecessarily unfair since what are the odds he'll find a woman that is also exactly around 300 for him to fall in-love with without being called a creep, and even then, using your argument for Zeke and Tatiana having an 8 year gap being still somewhat weird, Jeralt will still be in a losing ground if he found a woman that is exactly 332 years old just because she's younger by 8 years old despite both being around 300. It's like he have no right to fall in-love with anyone anymore at that point unless it's also someone who's also 340 years old. Honestly in this kind of settings, it's just better to think between the division of a child and an adult rather than focusing on their exact age. If both are an adult regardless of their exact age, it's a fair game for anyone. And as far as romance goes, if their relationship is healthy and loving of each other without underlying bad intentions, does it really matter what their age and appearance is

I always just found it weird they just let Byleth be a professor of students despite seemingly being roughly the same age with no reasoning (IE a child genius or someone with a long list of accomplishments despite the young age) although given his parents that could possibly cause them to age differently. The Lynn thing reminds me a bit of Harvest Moon it's a wonderful life, specifically the special edition for PS2. It added another love interest Lumina, despite her her being 14 in the original game for gamecube, she was aged up to 18 for the PS2 version making her the youngest bride as all the others were 26 save for Muffy who was 30

I think when you're immortal or at least extremely long lived, age gaps (provided both are adults, of course) stop mattering. I mean, think about it: our perception of time can be altered. This kind of thing would hold especially true if you looked young but were over 300. Like, you might as well be the same age you were all those years ago. Your body doesn't age, your mind stops keeping track of the years, you end up in what is essentially a form of stasis. Consider that the "half your age +7" rule results in a widening gap the older you get. To put it into perspective, a 100 year old person marrying a 57 year old would fit that rule and the discrepancy is a whopping 43 years! The person you are marrying is young enough to be your grandchild! So if we're going to use that kind of rule, we really can't apply it to beings that don't age normally.
The Fates kids are extrodinarily young, but even if you buy into it and go "yeah they're grown!" No they're not! Look at Kana. Look at Kiragi. Midori is the only one to point out her genetics doom her appearance so I'll give her a pass since that DOES happen to some. Either way, those kids at their oldest don't look a day out of high school. Yet mommy and daddy dearest ship them off anyway. 10/10 parents, at least the ones in Awakening REALLY didn't wish that reality on their kids

So Jean is the youngest child soldier in Fire Embleme with 10 years old. She might not fit the definition if child soldier exactly but one of my favorite JRPG partymembers and participants in a war is 4 years old. Not the best maschin gun user in the game but she does her part.
I once theorycrafted the ages of the royals in Fates using a bit of logic (as that game loves parallels and symmetry a bit too much) but mostly a lot of guesses Since we know from a support between Elise and Leo that Elise is an adult (he tells her to "start acting like the adult you technically are") we can deduce that she's 18 (I really doubt they'd make her older than that) and Sakura should thus be as well as again, Fates loves to make parallels between the two sides. After that, I just assumed that each pair afterward has a gap of two years, why ? It honestly just felt right (listen, I'm trying okay ? The game isn't giving me much to work with and this looks plausible and would make good symmetry) so we end up with Elise and Sakura : 18 Leo and Takumi : 20 Corrin and Azura : 22 Camilla and Hinoka : 24 Xander and Ryuma : 26 It's really flimsy (notably because I don't even know if the original quote is actually correct or if it's a localizer's liberty), but this answer satisfies me so I've being going with it for a while now, I can definitely buy Xander and Ryuma as 26 year olds for example. It would be so much better if the game gave us answers though, but I fear what the actual answers would be so I will keep on believing that for now
So, the thing about Elise is that she does not remember Garon being a kind person. Corrin got kidnapped around 15 years prior to the main game. So, Elise is somewhere around 15-16, add in the, horrible, fact that "technically an adult" for a girl means you have hit puberty (10-14yrs).

I have to disagree about Jeralt being a creep. It's reasonable that the age thing isn't palatable for many, but the perception of age gaps in relationships is largely a social construct. Obviously, there are limits, even with the variability of childhood and maturity. But unless a person lies about their age to secure the relationship or somethng like that, the gap really doesn't make a difference once they're both adults. What matters is maturity, behaviour, power dynamics, and capacity for consent. Age isn't an inherent factor to the latter two except as regards maturity/consent nearly as much as something like, say, teacher-student does. I'm not ragging on you for the opinion in and of itself, I just want to put it out there that this isn't a cut-and-dry thing (same as with, say, first-cousin relationships. @@whitewolf3051 case in point: diamant and citrinne used to play a lot together in their childhood. according to internal data, there is roughly a 7-8 year gap between them. the ages feel inconsistent with their shared backstory. diamant is a crown prince in a medieval world, so he would likely be tutored in combat and politics the instant he was old enough to learn (which would be sooner than citrinne being old enough to form memories and recall them vividly). a 3 year age gap would make more sense
Their existence was nonsense compared to Awakening, at least Awakening had a valid reason story wise, but Fates did *not.* Child unit in Fates just followed a trend from Awakening. Glad no other games in the series continued using that.

40 to 20 is a weird age gap, it's fairly normal when you consider the time period these games are based on.

It's a bit of a mess and never outright confirmed, but I always took it as her possibly (likely) being an artificial human created through magic, instead of a human born from a mother. But that would still make her a human(-esque), just not a naturally born human. But it's open to interpretation for sure

While it has always been weird to me that Byleth can romance their students, that is more so because of the power dynamic than the ages, because after the timeskip, while byleth may have been born 26-27 years ago they have only lived for 21-22 of those years making them essentially the same age as most of their students
I don't think we can judge Alear for the 1000 year age gap considering they spent their last 1000 years slumbering without really aging. This is the one case were age really is just a number, as Alear hasn't really lived all those years, so they're functionally just 17. Completely unlike Jeralt, who actually lived all those 300 years
I do get the 300 year old age gap being weird but 21 and 29 is literally about the same age gap as my parents and while I would understand if you wanna avoid like lets say 18 and 26, you are 100% an adult by 21. Also to defend Jeralt a bit, from a meta standpoint we know he is a good well intentioned man so its not as bad as it could be.
Iirc in his supports with Priscilla, Erk mentions that Serra is the same age as them, kind of confirming Serra and Priscilla to be 15
Something I came across-- So you would assume Gregor from Awakening is around 30-40 with how he talks about himself, but if he is the father of Severa she will tell him something like "I'm closer to your age than you think." This is probably just her implying that she is older than she appears, but it also reads as her possibly insinuating that she's in/approaching her 30s.
And of course, who can forget the yick of having Ricken/Fates-Ricken say things like "when I come of age" in their romantic supports.

I hadn't heard about the datamined ages for Engage, so the one that really made me double-take was Vander being *fourty-five.* It's really taking the Anime-trope of anyone over the age of 30 being a seasoned and battle-scarred veteran ready to step aside for the new generation to a hilarious extreme. It's not like he's even lived a particularly harsh or stressful life that might've turned his hair and beard prematurely white! He's spent most of it playing attendant to someone who's permanently asleep!

When I learned about Hector being "only 17" I was shocked! I always imagined him being in his mid 20's. Since then I just play with my head canon of Hector being 26 and that plays out very well. I think that suits him better than being 17.

The explanation for Balthus is that he went to the Officer's Academy a few years ago, cause he's buddies with Holst. He mostly just pals around there because he's essentially in a protected zone what with the Abyss being under the Monastery. The way it was set up I thought Jeralt was gonna be said to have dated Sitri when she was 16 or something and he was pushing 30, no he was basically 20 and she was literally 20, it's not like he was literally 320 his life got stretched out, making him essentially 20 for much longer than normal, at least that's how I always saw the extended lives of Dragons in Fire Emblem considering they age much MUCH slower than the people (See Tiki as a Child during Marths campaign and her only looking like a 20 year old in Awakening, who many characters can also marry)

Here’s one more (potential) set of weirdos from Genealogy; Oifey and Shannan. For important year bench marks, the game starts in 756, Gen 1 ends in 760, and Gen 2 takes place through 776 and into 777.
In Chapter 1 we get Shannan’s age of 4 in the year 756, while in the prologue we find that Oifey is 14 years old! Now, most child units have less obviously defined ages, but Seliph is one of the oldest, which him being born halfway into the Agustria conflict should put him at being born in 758 and being 19 in 777 (though I’ve seen a lot of stuff say he’s 17), so this is an upper bound. This means that the oldest character in your army that Oifey can theoretically marry is 19 at a time when he’s… 35!? What’s worse, he has a paired ending with Fee, who is a rare instance of a child being born after the end of Gen 1, so at the absolute oldest she’s 17. Oifey skipped the +7 in “half your age + 7”…
Shannan’s paired endings are Patty, who is also more than likely born after the end of Gen 1, or Larcei, who is his cousin…

Mainly, the humans of Elyos age faster than average humans compared to the rest of the humans in Fire Emblem universe, but in return, they develop and grow faster.
Basically, Engage populace go through a slightly accelerated human growth cycle.

What is always lowkey kinda annoying about these arguments is more often than not missing the context of the game for being medieval and fantasy. Applying real life modern morality is just pointless at best. Calling it weird for Jeralt to fall in love in his age is just unnecessarily unfair since what are the odds he'll find a woman that is also exactly around 300 for him to fall in-love with without being called a creep, and even then, using your argument for Zeke and Tatiana having an 8 year gap being still somewhat weird, Jeralt will still be in a losing ground if he found a woman that is exactly 332 years old just because she's younger by 8 years old despite both being around 300. It's like he have no right to fall in-love with anyone anymore at that point unless it's also someone who's also 340 years old. Honestly in this kind of settings, it's just better to think between the division of a child and an adult rather than focusing on their exact age. If both are an adult regardless of their exact age, it's a fair game for anyone. And as far as romance goes, if their relationship is healthy and loving of each other without underlying bad intentions, does it really matter what their age and appearance is

I always just found it weird they just let Byleth be a professor of students despite seemingly being roughly the same age with no reasoning (IE a child genius or someone with a long list of accomplishments despite the young age) although given his parents that could possibly cause them to age differently.
The Lynn thing reminds me a bit of Harvest Moon it's a wonderful life, specifically the special edition for PS2. It added another love interest Lumina, despite her her being 14 in the original game for gamecube, she was aged up to 18 for the PS2 version making her the youngest bride as all the others were 26 save for Muffy who was 30

I think when you're immortal or at least extremely long lived, age gaps (provided both are adults, of course) stop mattering.
I mean, think about it: our perception of time can be altered. This kind of thing would hold especially true if you looked young but were over 300.
Like, you might as well be the same age you were all those years ago. Your body doesn't age, your mind stops keeping track of the years, you end up in what is essentially a form of stasis.
Consider that the "half your age +7" rule results in a widening gap the older you get. To put it into perspective, a 100 year old person marrying a 57 year old would fit that rule and the discrepancy is a whopping 43 years!
The person you are marrying is young enough to be your grandchild!
So if we're going to use that kind of rule, we really can't apply it to beings that don't age normally.

I once theorycrafted the ages of the royals in Fates using a bit of logic (as that game loves parallels and symmetry a bit too much) but mostly a lot of guesses
Since we know from a support between Elise and Leo that Elise is an adult (he tells her to "start acting like the adult you technically are") we can deduce that she's 18 (I really doubt they'd make her older than that) and Sakura should thus be as well as again, Fates loves to make parallels between the two sides. After that, I just assumed that each pair afterward has a gap of two years, why ? It honestly just felt right (listen, I'm trying okay ? The game isn't giving me much to work with and this looks plausible and would make good symmetry) so we end up with
Elise and Sakura : 18
Leo and Takumi : 20
Corrin and Azura : 22
Camilla and Hinoka : 24
Xander and Ryuma : 26
It's really flimsy (notably because I don't even know if the original quote is actually correct or if it's a localizer's liberty), but this answer satisfies me so I've being going with it for a while now, I can definitely buy Xander and Ryuma as 26 year olds for example.

So, the thing about Elise is that she does not remember Garon being a kind person. Corrin got kidnapped around 15 years prior to the main game. So, Elise is somewhere around 15-16, add in the, horrible, fact that "technically an adult" for a girl means you have hit puberty (10-14yrs).

I have to disagree about Jeralt being a creep. It's reasonable that the age thing isn't palatable for many, but the perception of age gaps in relationships is largely a social construct. Obviously, there are limits, even with the variability of childhood and maturity. But unless a person lies about their age to secure the relationship or somethng like that, the gap really doesn't make a difference once they're both adults. What matters is maturity, behaviour, power dynamics, and capacity for consent. Age isn't an inherent factor to the latter two except as regards maturity/consent nearly as much as something like, say, teacher-student does.
I'm not ragging on you for the opinion in and of itself, I just want to put it out there that this isn't a cut-and-dry thing (same as with, say, first-cousin relationships. To rant briefly, people only ever lampoon the Hapsburgs for genetics, not for incest).

@@whitewolf3051 case in point: diamant and citrinne used to play a lot together in their childhood. according to internal data, there is roughly a 7-8 year gap between them. the ages feel inconsistent with their shared backstory. diamant is a crown prince in a medieval world, so he would likely be tutored in combat and politics the instant he was old enough to learn (which would be sooner than citrinne being old enough to form memories and recall them vividly). a 3 year age gap would make more sense

Their existence was nonsense compared to Awakening, at least Awakening had a valid reason story wise, but Fates did *not.* Child unit in Fates just followed a trend from Awakening. Glad no other games in the series continued using that.

Great video, I personally find it totally hilarious to think about how normalized it is to send literal child soldiers into war in pretty much all Fire Emblem games, really makes you wonder what was going on inside the developers' heads.
Worst part about Jeralt is that’s a rough estimate in the heat of battle to how far back it happened, so it could be anywhere from 250~350 if we just go by proper rounding rules, or even more if they didn’t.

Today on information that no one truly cares about, specially since the romantic scenarios are not meant to be there to take that seriously, but to entertain the player and allow them to pursue the character they like the most. Do you think I care about the ages on dating sims? Unless they look as literal infants, I only care about how good looking they are. I'm an adult, these elements are meant to be roleplayed in your free time, and won't even affect the story if you don't pursue anyone because there is not a canon couple in the game.
