I didn't like it in Fates, and I hated it in Engage. I like people with prior history to have fun supports but not at the cost of making the world feel smaller. It's also just.... really lazy.

I think it also coincides with the over reliance on royals. Of course the series has always been about the grand struggles between lords but in Engage there are so many royals there is basically no reason to use other units. Fates gets away with this because it’s your family but with Engage, they’re kind of a bunch of randos and they just role the dice on whether you’ll like them and their retainers. As someone who likes to get to know all the characters it is actually disappointing to have to neglect almost half of the available to characters because you simply can’t devote time to them. Another reason Three Houses was so great, you could recruit the students you really liked and grow attached to your house’s characters without having to bench half the roster every battle.

I agree with SoV. I wasn't aware of the retreat feature so I did that shit all in one. I think for some of the turns I spent 60 + turns just healing chip damage and repeat. I 100% agree on SoV terrible map design.

Funny thing is, Fates seemed like it got retainers 'right' to the extent that it used a lot of them. They weren't always introduced as "here's a prince(ss) and their two sidekicks"; the retainers were often recruited, or at least encountered, while they were off doing things for their liege. Some of them were doing things *they* decided their liege would need done, or where doing it "my way", or had other minor disagreements.

How about we ditch the royal protags and go back to the commonfolk? Like with Ike--We like Ike! We like Ike! We like Ike! Dwight Eisenhower (where the heck did he get "Ike" from anyways) slogans aside, I am stone-cold serious. Fewer royals, instead give us non-royal protags who don't have some special magic power (e.g. Byleth or Shez). Notwithstanding Ragnell, Ike's only divine powerup was in the finale of Radiant Dawn. More of that please!

Engages roster makes the problem so bad only 5 units aren’t lords or retainers Jean,yunaka,seadall,lindon,anna And i cant even remember was one in the past he coulda been and I wouldn’t be shocked

Shadows of Valentia's maps seemed kinda generic to me while playing, but I didn't really actively dislike them (I even enjoyed quite a few), especially compared to a game like Fates and its love for frustrating and clunky gimmick chapters (Ninja cave, snow shoveling, elevators). Fates just kinda makes you play Mario Party a lot of the time, and imo it usually doesn't work out well.

To further the factoid about Gaius: There is also an Item: Gaius' Paring Knife, which Draug sends Itsuki to retrieve to aid in Mamori to learn to properly cook

I hope the next FE adds more variety than undead goons Engage used them too much imo.

I think they need to shake it up. Imagine having to have enough trust to gain a new unit instead of getting two by default with a royal.

I actually dislike retainers bc i find the random village dudes or mercenaries that forget how being a mercenary works and join you for free over some military trained people

Remember when Corrin had like 6 retainers if you count Supports?
