Steve, everytime i watch u playing i think "this guy makes us think that playing at this level is the most natural thing in the world" U are just incredible!! Thanks!
Your style is so natural that it seems that you are only taking the sticks where it was supposed to be and the sticks are doing the work by itself... always listened to Mike Stern with Chambers or Weckl and you are just on their level! Thanks for sharing!!! A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!
Wow, that’s how master players jam, have fun spontaneously. For me as a drummer this is why Steve Smith continues to be one of my most favorite drummers. Mike just played at Yoshi’s Oakland and Steve is coming………yipppppeeeee!
OMG! This is an amazing performance. The metric modulations at the end have completely blown my mind. I'll spend the rest of my day trying to break them down. Thank you Steve!
Love the way you hold your stick when you're riding the bell at 4:30, like a kid who just discovered 2 wheel bikes...I was just listening and popped back into the video when I heard the sudden change. And the grip on the left hand, it went from the back of the stick in the 80's to the fulcrum now. Is one of those things you notice when you know they're there. Just started watching Jojo's DVD. Then there is the Indian vocal drumming along with Mike's guitar. I first heard of it from a guy with a channel named Strings of Andersen. Very interesting way to seeing music, it is like playing drums like a melody which is sorta the way I figure things out on the drums (while on guitar I figure out melodies as rhythm go figure.) This stuff is inspirational in more than one way, is like I grow as a listener(and hopefully as a player) as you guys grow as musicians. Still looking forward to playing Don't Stop Believing in one of our shows. If only for the drums (I love the bass line too and the way it plays with the drums. It's like watching two climbing plants grow right in front of your eyes and interact with each other). Thanks for posting.
I am the 301st like on this video and I just wanted to point out that I only liked it because there is no love button! Good God that is some righteous drumming!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you can get there early and are not claustrophobic, this is THE venue in NYC to see class acts like this. I saw Stern there several years ago for $15, which included 2 tumblers of JD - well large measures anyway :)
Steve always struck me as how a jazz guy interprets rock beats, once I got familiar with how he plays and his unique proclivities...like 4's on the high-hats, over 8ths or 16ths...unusual in rock stuff, at least with the drummers I like...lovely ride technique...and the crossovers... Almost impossible to be a singing drummer if Journey is your goal :) Though I'm about halfway there. Got the Perry part...:)
you are so great.! i wish meet you someday... i wish so much.! i'm from Ecuador, and you always has been my inspiration.! haha..! :D ..!!! and i like journey too..! ..
Funkiest thing I've seen all week.
Such a progressive drummer. Steve is completely committed to the development of his talent. Truly an inspiration.

Could this be any farther over my head? No. No it couldn't. This is just too much talent for so few musicians!
