everything would have been a great solo but @2:50 he goes into this insane flurry that BLEW MY MIND in high school...NEVER saw or heard anything like it before...
I thought the same thing when I saw him in Philly on the Escape tour. Never could figure out what he was playing in that "flurry" but it was awesome to see.
This was the style Steve Smith that I love. Same style on his ' 88 DCI drum video. The style that I learned alot of my licks from . Today he plays a bit differently.
Since the late 90's he sounds like a complete different drummer, I much more prefer his style in the 80's through mid 90's before he shaved his head and turned into more jazzier drummers, his old style has more beef and intuitive touch both on playing rock and fusion.
Dude! Wardrobe ? Really ? I completely agree with you on his improved skills, as he demonstrates with Vital Information and Kit Walker. But you’re gonna shred him on something we can’t hear, really ?
Yes. He kept practicing and taking lessons. Even just one year later during Escape tour, his playing had improved a notch. Rare combinations of finesse and power, technique and improvisation.
@@chromebull884 If you saw him drum for Journey in the mid 10's you could see that he has lost his 'rock' touch.. He's evolved obviously but not in a 'rock' way..
Steve Smith's solo's in the 80"s were so great. It seems drummers today just play really fast double bass but there's no rhythm of feel ! Steve Smith is the GOAT !
Genius drummer..lost his hair club for men card..still rocks..member of the jedi knight round table of drummers..one of the 1st to bring double bass drumming in a polyrythmic style
DAM kw I never would have made that comparison BUT ITS RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE !!!... His set is even tunned up like Bonzos'..ALL THESE YEARS AND ..I CANT BELIEVE I NEVER PICKED UP ON THIS!!!... Thanks for that comment My Friend cause your right on the money!!!!
awesome steve smith on drums, can someone tell me if this drum solo is just a solo, or is part of a song, as well as songs that contain drum solos such as: movidick by led zeppelin or tnuc by grand funk rairoad ?, and in which country did such an event happen, finally, if you confirm to which year this solo event belongs. Thank you for your valuable contributions to this required information.
Ok I just gotta say it. He’s playing matched grip here. Why on earth did he switch to that traditional grip nonsense a year or two later? Yes I know he’s a jazz drummer by training. But even then this concept that one must play traditional to play jazz is absurd. Yes I’m aware some of the greatest drummers like Rich and weckl played traditional. Still doesn’t make it optimal. No reason whatsoever for that grip other than being taught that way as a kid.
Excellent drummer only thing I dislike aobut hism is apparently when Lizzy opened for the in the USA,Steve started playing along to Lizzy/s live set, whch fusltered Lizzy members. That is NOT cool or very gracious!
He is one of the best drummer of all time AND all styles.

A mix of 4 strokes with the hands then 2 with the feet, then alternating 2 hands, 2 feet while moving around the kit

You missed the 86 DCI drum video?
@Van Allen Today he plays a little more boring! I agree his style has improved but not the same excitement in his playing as you can see here!
@@VdamMusic Because he plays with more efficiency.
He's also 35 years older

A time when double bass playing was still in it's infancy.
So sorry Thad, but YOU are off by several decades.
th-cam.com/video/50A-CYuz-XU/w-d-xo.html
Yeah this isnt its infancy.
Look up Louie Bellson. Way earlier than this.
Great solo. His playing and...his wardrobe have improved over the years

Iconic tank top and shorts

Maybe he got a few lessons from you three arm chair drummers!
He looks like he came from an audition for a ZZ Top music video, lol.
Back when he was still an amazing ROCK drummer!!
Blaze Infernus nope.. he's a soft jazz drummer
You are both wrong. He is a drum icon. He can play rock and jazz and more

He uses a groove and works off of that , showing off his chops but still being musical and dynamic
He never gets mentioned as a goat, he is
when i was growing up in the 70's, my neighbor would call the cops on me when i played the drums. Now I understand why😐

Nice solo Steve! Classic 1980. Was this performance at Osaka Castle Hall?

Alan Rickman grew a mustache and played drums for Journey? Nice!
Nice solo. Nice shorts....

Love it. He did a similar version of this on the Escape Tour, but in 4/4 time. Didn't work as well, IMO

Steve's solo's usually came after after one of JOURNEY's songs La Do Da Do De
I saw him at Birdland the other night and he was a zillion times better than this. And yes, better dressed. Amazing soloist.
@guitarbo1 I'm confused. What was the difference? Aside from the soloing here, this is in 4/4.
Plays like a beast, runs like a girl.
Vaccine injury or birthmark ? 0:29
Tattoo, Leo
Who knew
he ran or jogged weird lol
Playing drums is a workout ;)

@nucleardude11 He's actually much better than this.
