    On Valentines Day 2014, Anthony Jackson, Wayne Krantz, and Keith Carlock played a tiny bar in Charlotte, NC called Smokey Joe’s Cafe. I stood about five feet from Anthony most of the night, and it was one of the most unreal music things I’ve ever heard. He’s unbelievably gifted. On the Mt. Rushmore of bassists.

    What’s so ironic is I was listening to these guys last night and for the 1000th time I feel the same about Anthony that he does about Steve. I’ve been playing bass for over 30 years and AJ is the one bassist I keep coming back to. The guy with no limits. Endless ideas. An approach that couldn’t have been thought of by anyone else nor can be mimicked. Anthony, you are that man on your instrument as Steve is on his. I’m glad I discovered your playing because it shows me anything is possible.

It takes a selfless human being at his caliber to publicly say these kind words in honor to a great friend.. without taking any credit to himself.. showing such respect in tribute to Steve. No ego whatsoever. The man speaks as how he plays! No amount of money can ever pay for this speech by Anthony Jackson who has influenced so many bassist to date since the 70's in honor to Steve Gadd. Two of my favorite Top Shelf influential musicians. Much respect Sir Anthony Jackson.

    Thrilled to hear AJ’s speaking voice for the first time!
    As a 1980’s teenager I would run into the mall bookstore once a month and furiously slap through the pages of Bass Player magazine until I found Mr. Jackson’s column.

    Reggae music, my primary genre, does not get a lot of recognition, but the interplay between the Brother, Carlton 'Carly' Barrett RIP and Aston 'Family Man' Barrett was magical and is so incredibly difficult to replicate. Carly taught bassists how to understand the communication not just from the kick drum, bit the high hat and cymbals. He would signal when to basically play legatto, with his intervals on hi hat, when to play allegro, on or behind the beat with shifting patterns on the cymbals, playing with that now signature crossed up reggae style. Gadd and Jackson embody this, I am looking for my Carly or Steve to this day.

      @herrbonk3635 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is he? I don't understand this hype at all really. To me, Gadd is just *one* out of literally several hundreds (decent) drummers all over the world. Actually pretty mediocre compared to many of the really skilled ones. I can dig his playing sometimes, especially in later years, but some of the fusion stuff he recorded around the 80s was pretty horrible. At least to my senses.

    • @bucksmusic
      @bucksmusic ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes he is, and there is no hype. He's one of the most recorded drummers in the history of music, and one of the most modest people you'll ever meet. He's been used by so many major recording artists it's just ridiculous. Sinatra, McCartney, Clapton, Paul Simon, J Taylor, Chick Corea, K Bush, Ray Charles, G Benson and Steely Dan being just a few obvious examples. And the reason for that, is that although technically he is very good, Gadd always plays for the artist and song/composition first.

    • @herrbonk3635
      @herrbonk3635 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bucksmusic Gadd being modest or recorded a lot is pretty irrelevant... If anything it underlines the hype around him. You could just as well say that Madonna, or Britney spears, or Springsteen or whatever is better than the worlds top 1000 jazz drummers, because they are more commercially successful...

    • @bucksmusic
      @bucksmusic ปีที่แล้ว

      @@herrbonk3635 err no. Gadd being used by dozens of major artists, and being one of the most recorded drummers in history (not best-selling I didn't say that and have no idea about that), isn't hype, it's fact. The people he's recorded with didn't use him because of hype, they used him because of his reputation as an impeccable musician who could deliver the right drum part for the work they were creating. You seem to be arguing purely about technique etc, and that's not the point with Gadd, good though his basic technique is.

    • @herrbonk3635
      @herrbonk3635 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bucksmusic Why this strawman? Of course it's a fact that he is on numerous records... But it's *not* a fact that he is "better" than other jazz (or latin/funk) drummers. That's just some kind of religion.
      No I'm not arguing about technique. I usually find him pretty stiff and boring, that's all, although pretty ok in some cases. And he certainly got his own style. However, I honestly don't (personally) know a single person that prefer his style over other jazz drummers.

    Next time I need a keynote speaker for a conference, I’ll ring up Anthony Jackson! But really, this video is about Steve. Anthony’s comments about Steve’s musicianship were first brought to my attention when I was in high school in the mid 1970s. I was getting into jazz and fusion and of course hearing a lot of Steve’s work. I was discussing Steve’s playing with a friend of mine who was a drummer studying under Peter Erskine at the time. I asked him, “What is it that Steve does to make this stuff pop?” My drummer friend had an answer immediately: “He knows how to read music and he can hear it as he reads it. Listen closely to what Steve is doing. It complements the ensemble. He’s read the entire chart before sitting at the kit.” From that point on, I listened to drummers differently and I can recognize when Steve is on a recording.
