Jewish Saxophonist Genius like Michael Brecker or David Liebman.Bob was a complex guy. His father was Jewish and his mother Italian. He grew up in downtown Bensonhurst. He loved his huge drift vessel, a good Cuban cigar smuggled from a friend of his, a little 'yac', and a lot of Sinatra. In the middle of his life he met Arja, and he calmed down, had two wonderful children and became a devoted father and husband. He went to live in East Hampton, where he began fishing seriously between tours. He also loved the saxophone and jazz music, on which he concentrated his formidable intellect. The combination of his intellect, working through the prism of his formative years and his lifestyle and daily environment, brought down to us a passionate, yet merciless conception. Playing he literally put your back to the wall, and then tore you and the wall together. You had to fight and respond with all your might when you were on stage with Berg ... he never said it specifically ... he demanded it through his instrument. That's what it's been like to play with Bob Berg all these years ... he made me play better, he imbued me with his style ... he marked my soul forever. This is what I will miss most about Bob ... the incredible merciless and fearless, yet passionate, sound of his sax. Yet I am convinced that I will feel him again, day after day, year after year, every time I think about him ... I will feel him .. I know I will feel him ". (Randy Brecker, trumpet player)
Being Jewish, maybe he should be awarded a Nobel Prize and declared the greatest saxophonist in the history of the universe, God's Only Chosen Begotten Saxophonist.
Bob Berg was really good, and I hate to quibble with as brilliant a musician as Randy Brecker, but he was no Michael Brecker. He had the chops, but none of the originality - in fact on this video, there is very little to distinguish his playing from Brecker's. Still a great player, but that's not genius.
he played with all the biggest players, at 16 he played with horace silver, but who ever said that he is underestimated. he is one of the best saxophonists in the world and everyone knows it
Not from me, of course, and not from Miles, Cedar Walton, Chick Corea, Horace Silver, Mike Manieri ... and Michael Brecker knew who Bob was too. A capo.
@@tomkeller13 Me to. Unreal times !!! I was Blessed to have played with Many people I admired & Honestly people tthat... ( What was I thinking ? ) I'm NOT gonna name drop. But because of this vid, & being in the same place @ the same time, Jammed W/ Stern a few times ! First... He's The Coolest "Cat" to hang with !! That's how I originally met him. Then... Afew amazing Jams around early & mid 90's. He really is one of the Coolest Dudes I ever had the pleasure to hang with !!
Awesome. I got to see this lineup around this same time. My high school sweetheart drug me to an outdoor show at the local Jazz Festival not knowing what I was about to witness. Completely changed my life forever.
SHIT man!!!! Dennis was killing it a that age!!!!!!!! so strong, powerful, explosive, and musical at the same time!!!!!! LOVe his playing!!!!!!! just WIiiiicked!
I enjoy both, but I think Bob Berg is more accessible. I could put on my car sound with non hard core saxophone lovers, and they would still enjoy. Sometimes Brecker could be boring to someone not used to his music.
Never got to see Bob Berg play live (Rest his soul), but have a couple of his discs and thoroughly enjoyed them. He and the whole band are on fire here!
Saw them a couple of times. This line-up and with Jeff Andrews playing the bass. Bob Berg was amazing. My all time favourite musician. Lincoln Goines is better than Jeff Andrews. At least he was at these sessions.
I saw this band live in Turin, Italy, it was '89, if I remember well, but on bass there was the great Jeff Andrews (R.I.P.). It was a dangerous night, these gentlemen back then belonged to the "no prisoners league"... P.S. Bob Berg (R.I.P.) was a hell of a player, absolutely mind blowing...
Mike and Bob take you to a world beyond sight and sound... Berg was really on fire here, just watch Mike Stern towards the end of the solo mouth the word "whoa".... Berg was channeling energy from some other place. He was in...the Chroma-zone.
Great show Mike Stern is an incredible gift to us all.. Dennis and Lincoln oh boy watch out. And Mr. Berg another fantastic talent with such great tone and feel for the sax. Thank You for the post.
First time I saw this lineup was with my now wife at the Iron Horse cafe in Northampton Mass during our U-Mass days...totally blew our minds...still does.
Just off the hook epic playing by all of them. Geeeez! I wish Bob had been mixed properly, it was a struggle to hear his solo on Chromazone. But even with that you can still hear his genius shining through. R.I.P. Bob. Thank you for the gift of your artistry.
just saw mike at birdland with dennis on drums what nice men. I saw one set and left feeling great on jan 2023 bob mat be gone but he was a great guy too his stuff with cedar walton was killer. Oh mike be older now we all are lol but he can still play swinging they all did the other night
I will never, ever get tired of hearing Mike and Bob blow through Chromazone :) But, is that Peter Dinklidge in the audience at 13:28? I think it is! I didn't know he had such good taste in music
Tive a honra de assistir um show do Mike Stern....É um ser humano incrível..Muito simpático e com uma educação fora do comum...Simplesmente iluminado...
Thanks Rick, I saw him with exactly this line up in L.A. this time around. It was my first experience of him, and totally knocked out. That feeling just came back to me as I watching this and fired me again, thanks for the post !

Mike's tone is f-kn killer!
Bob Berg is one of the most under rated sax players in the world.
+Michael Corenzwit Agree. He was as good as brecker imo, and we lost both way too soon.
Sooooo sad........my two favorites gone in the blink of an eye.........

One of the best, maybe THE best live shows I have ever heard. Four musical geniuses on stage together. Inspiring would be a major understatement.
so fkn glad the cameras were there for this one.
The early 90’s was a good time for music in New York City.
Absolutely. I was a gigging guitarist completely immersing myself in it.
@ That time, UNREAL Music was HAPPENING In MOST ALL Big Cities. it was an UNREAL TIME !!!

RIP Bobby. You made your sax yell with such anger and passion at the same time brother.
I was at this show, found myself in the crowd 25 years later. Amazing performance, everyone is playing their ass off.

13:27 Peter Dinklage (games of throne) was there to see it !
Some absolutely crushing, trailblazing playing from Bob Berg. His mastery of the saxophone was on a superhuman level.
I'd be smiling too with Lincoln Goines and Denis Chambers!! Holy Mother of God!!!! Jazz/Funk at it's best.
SHIT man!!!! Dennis was killing it a that age!!!!!!!! so strong, powerful, explosive, and musical at the same time!!!!!! LOVe his playing!!!!!!! just WIiiiicked!
he was already like 32 here...
I totally agree! It's one of his best performances I've ever seen!
This band was terrific. Bob Berg is a real saxophone colossus.
He plays jazzy, but man hes got some rock influence, does killing bends, and then a cromatic jazz backwards at the same speed, legend!!!
Thanks for this. These guys were smokin’ hot and tight. 😎👍🎼🎸
Mike in full flow is quite something to behold.
Mike, you one BAMF!!
Dennis Chambers. Man, he lives and breathes the music when he plays. So it's not a drummer he is; A great musician he is!
He chews the music. He always be chewing!
Bob Berg, He was a legend! even as Michael Brecker. Great fusion!

@@claudemiropacheco yes bob is a legend is a god of sax
Bob, you did so much in such little time, amazing.......
Dennis just absolutely kills, ALWAYS!!!
I was lucky enough to see this formation in Italy about 1990 at the Toniolo Theater in Venice. Top notch musicians.

Dennis Chambers has got to be one of the most gifted drummers.
He is one of the most gifted drummers. Gary Novak is up there as well.
Bestike Stern I've ever heard. Long-time listener too.

It has to be! Peter's a long time NYC resident, still is as far as I know.
Fantastica band ,fantastico concerto, Dio c'è!!!!!!!😍😍😍😍
It is incredibly, fantastic, what power, this band is unreachable... thank you wild guys...
These old, "New York Live," productions, are awesome! Never knew of these recorded performances. Top notch! Thank you uploading amazing stuff! Gems!
I did not even know Bob Berg. Awesome!!!
Saw this exact band in Seattle, years ago, one of THE most smoking shows ever! Jeff Andrews was a beast!
They are on fire.
Made me cry in shame! I’ll never pick up a guitar again!
Ciao Bob...grazie Bob
The blessings of youth.
One of the Greatest fusion bands!
I am here because someone introduced this to me. And I never regret it. They're great! 😍 Jazz music is so cool!
I never forget seeing them At My Place in Santa Monica on Wilshire ...
Richard van Schelven That was such a great venue! Saw Robben Ford and then Carl Verheyen there!
I also seen them there, totally taken by surprise, I remember leaving breathless.

the sound quality is awesome for 1991!
