Find a heavy piece of copper and use it as a backer behind the gaps. The weld will not stick to it (because it's copper) and it makes kind of a mold for the molten wire coming out of the welder. It will also hold the shielding gas in the weld area and keep it from escaping thru the gap. I got some pieces of bus bar from a high voltage switch. They are like 3/4" thick. They also help absorb the heat so you don't blow thru the thin panels. If you don't have access to scrap copper, Eastwood sells tools for this purpose . th-cam.com/video/huPdLOIA438/w-d-xo.html www.eastwood.com/welders-helper-3x3-set-flat-curve-anglecop-plates.html?SRCCODE=PLA00020&gclid=CjwKCAjwp7baBRBIEiwAPtjwxI2pMRCTjuC28jwI8_-YdQPIU88FcOfnxpATBKaShwiXPpyQtNoW8xoCif0QAvD_BwE
I love how much you’ve done to your f100. I’d love to see an update video of it. Basically a new walk around. I just got a 1973 f100. I’m planning to do the engine bay similar as yours.
Hey the best way to put in the pan is place in the new one over the old one screw it down and make one cut around and the use panel butt clamps to get it ready for welding
if you can get some smaller welding rods, you can break the outer layer off and bend them to fit then weld in the rods. super easy way to help fill those gaps up.
Awesome! Gave me flashbacks. I got mine done not to long ago and it looks like you had similar issues. I just tell myself, "it's only metal." You've learned that welds can be ground and metal can be added. Perfect! Keep it man, love the videos as always.
Hey Craig great job on the floor pans.very impressed on how you did it being this was your first time.i went to school for auto body and repair.and I do my work on my own independent.nice to see a kid your age take and interest in and how well your proud of the work.keep up the good work bro
My 60 F100 was a North Alabama truck all its life and guess what, even up in the mountains the floors wound up yabba dabba doo. Had to patch the drivers and part of the pass.
I would suggest using a rust encapsulator (Eastwood makes one) on the enclosed (inside the toe/kick panel area, enclosed frame sections, etc.) areas to stop and prevent further rusting.
Nice job on the floor man, I just overlapped mine, wedded them in and then did 3 coats of bed liner, didn't grind down my welds hardly at all lol doesn't look the best but I just didn't want to spend that kind of time when the rest of the truck is so dented and beat, and I figured if it bugged me enough Ill just get a mat.
I like how he did it put alot of detail into it my passenger side has a big hole and the seam near the door kick panel is rusted through in some places I might just overlap as well since I will be welding with a Harbor frieght flux welder . If not I pay a guy to do it for me . The previous owner bolted a street sign underneath too funny
i wish i would have seen a very very very detailed vidio back 20 odd yrs ago when i was learning to to do this stuff when i was younger like craig's age......lol.lol.lol.... but i got some wisdom from it all..... we all live & jearn & roll on...... GREAT JOB'S CRAIG & CREW THERE.............. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you put the new panel on top of the old floor that needs to be cut out. Put a few self tappers in and cut through both panels at the same time. You have the perfect fit first try
@@jss6060 I know a magician metal fabricator named Fitzee's Fabrications that uses a "cut and butt" technique that you described. Looks like it works great!
For your 1st attempt at replacing a floor you did excellent 😁. For future reference you'd be better off using thinner wire when welding sheet metal, .022-.025 wire work's better than the thicker .035. Your welds won't be as proud and less burn thru. Great job again dude.
74F100 Shortbed there's also silicone bronze brazing wire, but you need to run pure argon. But I agree, Craig did a great job taking his time with that .035 wire.
Looks good man and dont worry about what others say about your work as long as its safe and you are happy with it thats all that matters. Keep up the good work. I also have a 71 f100 i got for a 100 bucks and you have helped me alot on this thing
Hey Craig,,, Looking good buddy....I was told No worries on how your welds look,, as long as you got penetration,, because they're going to be ground down anyway... Got to tell you though, your welding looked a heck of a lot better, than when I did mine.... Keep up the great work....
best way to do this is tare it all down start with the frame up but getting it dun is were it counts good job i'm just glad i don't have too do this to my rig . i use to do stuff like this just about every day at a body shop restoring cars and it was a B because it had to look like it was never dun
hey don't beat on her too much she looks great for a Michigan truck ;) but man im happy to see you put this much into the truck and I really cant wait to see that frame build.
Craig, did you have to purchase the whole floor pan assembly or were you able to find just those two front pieces? I have a 72 F100 a friend is want his replaced and LMC is showing only a full pan purchase.
Fucking outstanding job Craig nowhere near as good as you man. That's why when I look for trucks I get them where there is no rusty environments. Can't wait to see you driving this bad boy you better give us like an hour of you driving haha
Got it from a guy in Fresno, truck has stayed in the Bay area and Fresno area for all it's life and it has more rust than my friend's '68 C10 that was driven in the snow hahah
For the LOVE OF GOD MAN screw drivers are NOT chisels! hahahaa Cover any glass or plastic when cutting or grinding the sparks/removed material can imbed itself in the softer material. Carry on good job!
Well I guess I missed this video over the past month I didn't realize that you had already installed your floor pans during your video of scrapping out another one oh well
WHAT STORE U GET THE LIL WELDER & GAS'S AT......?? & WHAT SORT OF $$$ U GOT TIED INTO IT WHERE U WERE TACK OR SPOT WELDING THERE OUT THE DOOR CASH.........????????
The welder I think was Lowe’s or Home Depot. It’s a Lincoln 140 mig which was about $650 and the gas, wire, gear, and everything else brought the final total with the welder to around $1000
I'M SEMI CURIOUS HERE OF WHY U DIDN'T TAKE THE CAB OFF OR AT LEAST FLIP IT UO A BIT IN THE REAR OF THE CAB TO SEE & TO GET IT ALL A BIT BETTER.......?? WAS REAL ROOM THERE A FACTOR.....?? I'M WONDERING U SEEM TO HAVE A LOT OF FLOOR SPACE OUT SIDE OF THE GARAGE......... EITHER WAY AWESOME JOB'S THERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you. And it’s actually harder to lay a floor pan vertically because it would just fall if the cab was set on its side so this really is the best way. Still kinda hard. But oh well

Thank you this will help a lot. Much appreciated!!

Nice job! Kudos for showing respect to the neighbors on the noise issue! Good neighbors are hard to find.
Very. I respect the people around me. Works well.
"Don't tell me how much worse your floor is than mine"

Hey the best way to put in the pan is place in the new one over the old one screw it down and make one cut around and the use panel butt clamps to get it ready for welding
Nice job, but if you ever try a plasma cutter, you'll never cut with a grinder again.
I wish I could afford one haha ive used them they’re amazing.
I like it! Not like we do this every day but it's the learning curve. I definitely can learn from this video. Thanks Craig!
Awesome to hear it man. Thank you!
REALLY YOUR 1 ST TIME WELD'N & CUTTING & FITTING & ALIGNING & ALL THAT GREAT & SUPER JOBS THERE !!!!!!!!!!
Thank you!!
if you can get some smaller welding rods, you can break the outer layer off and bend them to fit then weld in the rods. super easy way to help fill those gaps up.
Okay I gotchu! Makes sense. Thanks!
Thats not gear oil it NewEngland under coating :)
Your welds look fine. You welded the full perimeter and managed not to warp the crap out of the metal. Nice work.
Thank you!
Awesome! Gave me flashbacks. I got mine done not to long ago and it looks like you had similar issues. I just tell myself, "it's only metal." You've learned that welds can be ground and metal can be added. Perfect! Keep it man, love the videos as always.
Thank you you’re definitely right on the money! I’ll keep making them thanks again!

Thank you much appreciated! I take pride in what I do so I try my best to not only be different but create good work people like.
I like that your not afraid to tackle a job.
I see it as you’re never gunna learn unless you try. So I go up in front of thousands so you learn to do it right the first time.
Very nice job! in the middle of the exact same job with my 68'

Hey man it’ll always look better than it did so it was worth it. Good job bud. And thank you. Appreciate it!
At least it was a street sign, mine was just some radome sheet metal screwed to the floor. I think I show it in my floor video.
i wish i would have seen a very very very detailed vidio back 20 odd yrs ago when i was learning to to do this stuff when i was younger like craig's age......lol.lol.lol.... but i got some wisdom from it all..... we all live & jearn & roll on...... GREAT JOB'S CRAIG & CREW THERE.............. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you! We all learn at some point!
@ 44 i'm still trial & eeror's & still here to learn ..... been told if u r not learning u r not growing any simple wisdom......lol
If you put the new panel on top of the old floor that needs to be cut out. Put a few self tappers in and cut through both panels at the same time. You have the perfect fit first try
Yea I’m definitely doing that next time. Sounds a bit easier haha
Thecraig909 you can use it when doing any kind of patch panel or panel replacement. Works perfect
@@jss6060 I know a magician metal fabricator named Fitzee's Fabrications that uses a "cut and butt" technique that you described. Looks like it works great!
If everything "pans out" the way he wants he'll have one hell of a truck lol😂😂 keep up the great work man👍
My god that was great! 😂😂 thanks man will do!
AWWWW YEAH!!!!!!!!!! keep it up Craig!!!!!!!! #Craignation
Thanks man! Will do
This same repair is coming on my 79 Ford. Hoping mine turns out as good. It’s gonna be my first as well. 🤷🏼♂️

Didn’t think about the wire size that makes sense. Will definitely try that next. Thank you!!
You're welcome 😁 Keep up the great work!

Appreciate it man! And wow what a deal! Glad I could help you out!
"be happy your floor doesn't do that"
shit you think my truck HAS a floor? lol
Sorry man, well now you know how to fix it a bit better 😂
Hey Craig,,, Looking good buddy....I was told No worries on how your welds look,, as long as you got penetration,, because they're going to be ground down anyway... Got to tell you though, your welding looked a heck of a lot better, than when I did mine.... Keep up the great work....
Much appreciated! I try to be consistent with welding so tried making them look good. Came out pretty well. Thanks again!
best way to do this is tare it all down start with the frame up but getting it dun is were it counts good job i'm just glad i don't have too do this to my rig . i use to do stuff like this just about every day at a body shop restoring cars and it was a B because it had to look like it was never dun
Very nice job awesome my friend you are getting there
Thank you!
Very nice job on the floors, keep up the good work...Pat
Appreciate it Pat! Your truck is coming along great as well!
I have a 95 F-150 that has no frame rust but it has no rust on the body its self, which is really rare in North Dakota
Very rare man!
Finally the 5 speed is going in. It’s going to be faster and better fuel mileage
Much better definitely!
hey don't beat on her too much she looks great for a Michigan truck ;) but man im happy to see you put this much into the truck and I really cant wait to see that frame build.
Thank you man. I can’t wait to see where this truck goes in the future.
Nice! It’looks great!
Thank you!!
Craig, did you have to purchase the whole floor pan assembly or were you able to find just those two front pieces? I have a 72 F100 a friend is want his replaced and LMC is showing only a full pan purchase.
Hay man what company did you get your pans from and nice job got some good pointers I am doing the same on my 72 f250 crew cab thank for video:)
Did you have to brace your cab at all? Need to do the same but also want to replace mounts.
nice job ur truck is looking great ur doing a great job on ur videos keep it up.
Really appreciate it. Will do!
Thecraig909 ur very welcome
When you make a list of parts you need... Never mind.
Love this build!!! A die grinder would make that a little easier
Yea definitely!
Looking good buddy!!
Thanks man!
Love your vids
Thank you!
Where’d you get your floor pans? And does your truck have power steering
Did you sell the chevy? I think i saw someone else driving it yesterday in National city, great videos, i own a 68 f100.
Yes sir. Wouldn’t surprise me if you saw it driving around. He uses it
Fucking outstanding job Craig nowhere near as good as you man. That's why when I look for trucks I get them where there is no rusty environments. Can't wait to see you driving this bad boy you better give us like an hour of you driving haha
Thank you man really means a lot to me. And you’ll find em. It definitely makes things easier. And oh trust me you’ll get driving clips
Thecraig909 honestly can't fucking wait dude. No rush Im just super stoked for your truck project
As the old saying goes: there's still paint attached to the metal chances are it's still solid.
Who did you get your floor pans through?
My '72 F100 has almost the exact same rust spot and amount on the driver side
Got it from a guy in Fresno, truck has stayed in the Bay area and Fresno area for all it's life and it has more rust than my friend's '68 C10 that was driven in the snow hahah
Just saw the video of the 1985 J10 I'm wondering what happened with it.
My buddy’s fighting around the paperwork for it. It will make a comeback eventually.
For the LOVE OF GOD MAN screw drivers are NOT chisels! hahahaa Cover any glass or plastic when cutting or grinding the sparks/removed material can imbed itself in the softer material. Carry on good job!
Yeah. Glass gets ruined.
Thank you will keep that in mind!!
Hey Craig, are you planning to undercoat the truck?
Yea I did I just didn’t film it I’ll go over it in a future video.
Well I guess I missed this video over the past month I didn't realize that you had already installed your floor pans during your video of scrapping out another one oh well
What setting was your welder on?
did you treat that spot behind the small patch ?
Yes I did.
Nice work
Thanks!
Keep it up man!
Will do!!
Craig you did a great job buddy
Thank you!

I'M SEMI CURIOUS HERE OF WHY U DIDN'T TAKE THE CAB OFF OR AT LEAST FLIP IT UO A BIT IN THE REAR OF THE CAB TO SEE & TO GET IT ALL A BIT BETTER.......?? WAS REAL ROOM THERE A FACTOR.....?? "Deseparate"
-Craig, 2018
i removed the tailshaft seal and the rear main seal from my jeep its the only thing keeping it from rusting haha jk
Haha yea I know how that is
I just traded my ranger for a 72 Ford F-250
Congrats man! That’s awesome
No yours has a lot more rust than mine does.
Top a f100
You should see my truck it is way worse
Rust is rust haha. Still sucks regardless.
NOTIFICATION SQUAD
Where did you buy your floor pan ? I got a 1967 ford f100 rust too
