    Have you ever considered a more minimalist lifestyle and living in a van?

    • @joeblow1942

      I considered a Connect but went with a used Toyota Sienna because it cost thousands less, the bed is a couple feet longer, and it’s a Toyota. Converted it to a mini camper and have been living in it for two years this June. (On the conservative side I have saved over $30,000.00 in rent.) I love the minimalist lifestyle too and will be buying and building out a big tall Transit van soon.

      While recovering from a work related accident i found myself with alot of spare time on my hand, a sizable settlement, and a PT regime that was simple enough i wasnt tied down to a specific clinic. So on a bit of a whim i took a dodge neon with a yakima rook rack and turned it into a one person(plus one dog) camper and drove it completely around the lower 48 (borders and coasts) the passenger seat was removed with a bed platform replacing it … I opted to discard the donut in favor of two full sized spares that fitted under the bed … the seat of rhe back couls be removed and replaced with a pole for a self supporting tent of multiple layers (bug, weather, insulating) for space outside the vehicle.
      I never bothered with sinks showers toilets but instead relied on access to fresh water that i could then heat up and take rag baths, wash my few dishes, even hands wash and line dry most clothing plus learned how to use a bucket and bag toilet

    Hmmmm..This may be too late since it’s a 2 week old video and you said your Van and “Build” was $15,000..However, Before you go nuts building this thing out please understand a few things. I own a 2013 Connect and have put 50,000 miles on it. You have a under powered vehicle with a poor braking system. WEIGHT MATTERS! There is sticker on the driver’s side door jam that shows your Gross Vehicle Weight. Read it, do the math and understand it. Depending on the options - your van can carry 1400-1600 pounds. That sum, already includes you and a full tank of gas. Everything you put in there adds to that. So pay attention on your build because once it’s done, you will add stuff like camping gear, food, water, firewood, cloths, you name it all adding u to additional weight. I run around on cross country trips with near 900 lbs. of weight and it not only affects your ability to climb hills, use cruise control on less than flat roads (you can’t) and braking. As long as you don’t add a roof rack or anything else you will do OK in the wind but count on a lot of downshifting and going slow on mountain roads.
    These vehicles are notorious for broken Motor mounts. Especially the one under you Coolant (degas) Bottle. There are 3 Mounts. The easiest way to tell if a mount is broken is the vibration when you first start it up and idle. Ford claims you do not need to change the transmission fluid for 120,000 miles. In fact, I had a dealer who would not change it at 60,000 until I said I was using the van under severe conditions as outlined in the manual. Do yourself a favor and buy a ($95) a new transmission pan from MAZDA - that’s right - Mazda. They use the same transmission in the van in numerous models only they have a Drain Plug in theirs. This way you can change the trans fluid how often you like especially again if you’re in the mountain west. While each build is done based on a person’s own taste, most of the stuff added is never used - like sinks. Solar panels only work if the sun is out or if you think every campsite has no trees overhead. Buy a portable battery instead. Even my small 250 Jackery runs my lights and fan (and can even jump start your engine battery) for 3 days. Good luck on your build - just wanted to share some advice.

    • @NoInjusticeLastsForever
      @NoInjusticeLastsForever ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SweetPotatoTyler You would need to look at the zoning and building codes in your area. Most likely it wouldn't be legal to live in a tiny house full time at a permanent location. But if you were going to constantly travel like you could in your van, then you'd be okay. I just want to live small and not travel so I'd have to move out of NY state. PA has a couple of places and I know CA and CO are tiny house Mecca states in general.

      @@SweetPotatoTyler You're not even allowed to build a house these days that's smaller than what the average house in the 1950s was. It's insane that we're basically legally obligated to be forced into a 30 year mortgage when there are people who want to live small for the environment and our bank account and it's not legally allowed. Makes no sense.

      @@igorrosales1799 Still running. Just got back from a short road trip today in fact.
      Only issue I've ever had with it was a weird electrical issue where the dash lights would start blinking and stuff. The issue got so bad that at one point I could turn the key to off and even remove it and the van would keep running for awhile.
      As a temporary fix I would disconnect the battery for a few minutes. That reset the computer. It would then run fine for a few months before it started doing it again.
      Several years back, however, I was digging around in the electrical box and I found a Garmin device the prior owner installed. It was a company device that allowed them to get emails and such. I removed that and the blinking lights never came back. So, I don't think there was ever anything really wrong with the van itself... the device was just dorking with the computer or something. I still installed a quick disconnect to the battery just in case it happens again on a road trip.

    I've been road tripping for some time in a 2012 Honda CRV. Like you were, I'm also in the hunt for several items, a small, high roof van (I'm 6'1"tall) being one of them. Probably unlike you, however, I won't be installing a sink, shower, nor toilet. I've camped, portaged, hiked, etc. in many global locations and really just need a decent bed and cooking/food-related items. With all the driving you'll be doing, you might want to consider a good dash cam system, just saying. As you pointed out, have a grand plan but be open to revisions and don't get bogged down in the largess. Make an outline of the steps required and what's needed. As things go on sale or are found, cross them off your list which is also a feel-good when you see your plan coming to fruition. Life's an adventure, blow every day out and enjoy what others only talk and dream about. Carpe diem!

    It’s hilarious how can life is about living minimally and just enjoying the adventure, yet so many people get caught up in having a new 50,000$ pro master with top end appliances. Van life has its own “keeping up with the Jones’s” culture within the community which is ironic because that’s supposed to be what we are escaping. The van you picked is perfect though. Cheap enough not to have a 7 year car payment, wont break down constantly, and good gas mileage. Seems to be the most logical choice to me.

    • @taddmcmichael9061
      @taddmcmichael9061 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely not....ok let me clarify. These vans are overpriced on the secondary market and it is do to this type of driven demand. A vehicle designed as a delivery vehicle with a 4 cylinder with very little bells and whistles that retailed when new for $23K and 10-11 yrs later is at $15K is just not normal depreciation. I will now say that I am part of that problem after having bought a 2010 (138K miles for $10,500) and 2011 (66K miles for $9500) in the last year. So being honest I would try make an offer for less and try and shave off a couple grand. Things to look for and to possibly help drive price down. They are prone to develop rust in the rear parts of the rocker panel so look for Bondo repairs if it is not visible as it has undoubtedly started and been repaired. Two, if it seems rough with vibration through steering wheel it needs motor mounts (common). Three, have someone pull the spark plug/coil pack wires and look for oil on the bottom of the boots as the valve cover gaskets leak as they get older. All easy fixes but can help with price negotiation. That being said if it is your dream then putting a particular price barrier up is not a big deal as the only thing you can not recover is the time wasted.

      Depending on your state (you'll have to check this with your DMV) often a car that has been in an accident becomes "re-titled". Again, depending upon the state that car might be re-titled as a "rebuilt" instead of a "clear" title. What matters is that your current car insurance company may not cover a car with a "rebuilt" title or only offer liability coverage. Again, this is very dependent upon the state but its worth checking out before you buy.

He could have dinged your credit by running a loan application, too. And giving you a ride was a way to put way more pressure on you to drive home in the van. Lucky it worked out but not really OK. Probably would have charged your card for the ride if you didn't buy.

    Do I understand that from 2019 onwards, you remotely deposit 1K to a dealership, without trying out the car, let alone negotiating the price, and risk to lose your deposit if you get to the car, try it out and don't like it ?
    Plus Ron doesn't drive your butt back home 90 minutes away. So you hitchike ?
    BTW, the other video I've watched is the Gutting the Van one.

      @@SweetPotatoTyler correct. Was going for the same van as yours but too small. Those other vans you looked at would’ve suits my vision of a home on wheels but I worry about car accidents or getting stuck on dirt roads. Least these homes on wheels with pop tops makes the vehicle sort of compact. If any of this makes sense.
      Anyways good luck out there

    I’ve owned a 2012 transit connect for seven years now. I bought in 2017 and had 51,000 miles on it. Couple things you should be aware of, that model year has a bad reputation for transmissions, as I found out. At 71,000 miles I had to have the transmission replaced. Cost me about $4500 because they had to completely replace it. At just over 100,000 miles had to have the motor mounts replaced. Another $1100 bucks. Has 113,000 miles on it now, about 2500 of that was last year on a trip to Ohio and back to California. I’ve also replaced the water pump. I will replace the alternator soon, but I do that on all my vehicles at 100,000.
    Does get excellent mileage. Got between 29 and 30 mpg if you keep your speed on the highway between 60 and 65 like I do.
    There’s enough space for one person, I plan on keeping this for about three more years and if I’m still traveling plan on getting a bigger van may be a Chevy express. A lot more space for some equipment I like to carry.

    This is cool. Nice whole hearted video man. I can’t believe I’m already 34 and haven’t done this still. Been researching it for YEARS. I moved out to Arizona for a few years. Got a Ford Escape and did a lot of traveling sleeping in it car camping style. But def need something bigger. I’ve always wanted a Honda Element. They’re just so cool and novelty. But then I get down to the practicality aspect and I’ve been leaning towards the connect as well. More space, better mpg, easier to find parts… can custom build it more. Some drawbacks are no AWD. Hope to do this. Gotta find a way to make money on the road though.
