Great Roads of Australia - The Oxley Highway

  • The Oxley Highway stretches 514 kilometres, starting on the mid north coast of NSW at Port Macquarie and extending west to connect with the inland centres of Tamworth, Gunnedah, Coonabarabran, Gilgandra and Warren. But the Oxley Hwy known to motorcyclists is the 174km part that runs between Wauchope and Walcha, and more particularly over Mount Seaview.
The Oxley always has a quality surface but in recent years has been severely damaged by severe rainy conditions and is still under repair. The great ride begins not long after leaving Wauchope and winds towards Mount Seaview fro a little over 50km before taking on the twisties over the mountain - 30km of them until you read Gingers Café which is almost a compulsory coffee stop.
Continuing west, you will get another 15km of magnificent sweepers before the road straightens - the last 70-odd kilometres to Walcha is scenic but pretty straight roads. You can break this up by stopping at the Apsley Falls, less than 20km from Walcha.
This video was recorded in October 2021 - the Oxley was in great condition, but still had 3-sets of stop-go traffic lights.
The Oxley is often reported as one of the best motorcycle riding roads in Australia.

Just watching this made me want to go downstaits, open the garage door, get on my bike, ride straight to Wauchope and tear up and down this road all weekend!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THAT! A beautiful winding road done on a nice motorcycle with Pink Floyd playing. Bliss!. I wish I was there! It takes me back to similar rides that I have done (many times many years ago now, on various bikes) on the Old Pacific Highway Berowra to Gosford and back or Berowra to Mangrove Mountain and then on to either Wisemans Ferry and across on the punt and back to Sydney or on from Mangrove Mountain to Singleton for lunch and then down the Putty Road and back to Sydney (or the reverse direction for any of these). Even sometimes having to have a little chat with your “friend”. Ah, the memories! I have never done the Oxley, bike or car but I plan to fix that quite soon (but at my much more restrained speeds now that I have retired). I just hope that I don’t muck up the ride in any way for any motorcyclists as I am a VERY motorcycle-aware driver. I will be playing Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin for sure.

Hey Mate. Just rode this today for the first time. Rode down from Brissie yesterday. This is by far the best stretch of motorcycling bliss around. Nothing in Queensland can match this. Going back again tomorrow.

Yes, even with the stop-go lights, it’s a great ride and probably NSW best. Love the Bruxner between Tenterfield & the Lunatic too.

Hardcore on stock tyres. I run the scorpion Rally STR on my GSA, and they have been pretty good so far.

Our next set will be different, but probably Mitas E07+ or Dunlop Trailmax Mission.

It's RALFES CREEK, not Raffles. lol Good music choice. Floyd. :) Always good. As you mention, the rains did a lot of damage, but the first thing was the fires of Black Summer, when the road was closed for months. The rains just ripped away super-dry soil. Local riders were lost, finding places to go.
But it's coming back now, after three years of disasters. Glad you enjoyed our local pride and joy of a road. :)

I really think they have ruined the road with all the widening and straightening of the road in numerous sections. It was so much nicer 20-30 years ago. 😪

I heading over from WA in October 2022 and really looking forward to riding the Oxley highway. Thanks for the video and update on the road condition, looks like a lot of fun.

What a great adventure from WA - heaps of great roads to cover on the way. We’d recommend allowing time to do the 45km stretch in both directions. And plan around the Oxley closure dates; Til 6 Oct closed Tue, Wed, Thur 7am til 4pm. 11 Oct til 16 Dec closed Tue, Wed, Thur 7am til 4:30pm and Fri 7am til 3pm. Open all Sat, Sun, Mon.

It might take up to 2-hours to ride from Wauchope to Walcha, but we'd suggest to stop at Gingers Café which is around half way, and maybe Aspley Falls. Or maybe 80 minutes (from Wauchope) to the turn-around point, then stop at Gingers on the ride back...

Gee, we have no idea what it was like years ago, so probably don't know which sections were straightened. Have only been riding it for the past 7 years and have noticed that it had always been well maintained, not withstanding the repairs to all the rain damage.

    • @gbsailing9436
      @gbsailing9436 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yes that was the thing each time over the years they had rain sections of the road would be damaged and so when they came along to fix the damage they would slowly wide in a section around this corner and then widen the next section around the next corner, of course over the years that meant that it wasn't as twisty and windy because the road went from being 20 foot wide. You know 30 foot wide which one might argue is ruined the nature of the road over the years. Others might argue that it's helped the character of the road because it's a lot safer but that just means that the speeds go up where is before the speed had be a lot less because it was more twist and tight, it's progress for you.
