    The weirdest thing about the whole "It's just a kids movie" is seeing it come from animation fan circles. Despite years of rejecting this notion that art intended for a younger/general audience is above criticism. Then suddenly seeing everyone turn around and say how Mario can't be criticized for being a kids movie is so baffling. Like ok I guess we can't criticize shrek the third or the emoji movie right?

    • @maikerunezumi
      @maikerunezumi ปีที่แล้ว +127

      It also implies that children's media doesn't deserve to have any sort of quality.
      Movies like Shrek and The Lion King are kids movies if you want to be technical about that, and those movies have genuine quality to them. To dismiss them as just "kids' movies" undermines the entire creative process that went into making those films.

      YES!!! Holy Shit, finally I saw a comment that said it, because this very point was driving me insane. Now, I’m not a “Mario Guy” - I’m pretty sure the last one I played was the 64 one, seriously - so I cannot attest to the second half of your comment. But even then the fact that so many of the defenders and supposedly passionate fans responded with “look at those film critics, they don’t know shit about Mario, I played every single title in the franchise and it fucking sucks, it’s meant to be dogshit, that’s the whole point”
      There’s also a worrying overlap with a community that has such disdain for criticism to the point where they straight up believe that movies are not art, and people who talk about movies as if they are art are nothing but “pretentious out of touch intellectuals”. Seriously, it’s a thing. It’s people who agree with that Scorsese phrase, except that they think it’s good - Because of course it grew out of MCU and DCEU obsessed communities.
      In the near future the only discourse regarding movies will be “how woke this movie is” against “this movie have absolutely no substance and its visually just like this one thing that’s adapting, and it’s for the fans”
      “Just consume products” wasn’t a bit, it was a fucking prophecy.

      And that online creators a lot of the time literally only live for the algorithm. MrBeast thrives off of big number, constant cutting and bright colours (I don't even mean that as a criticism he literally says that himself). It's fine if you like his videos or a movie which doesn't require you to think much and is made just to switch off and have fun, that's okay. But people also need to remember to expand their palette, not just going for whatever is being favoured by the algorithm or whatever your favourite brand makes and be fine with criticism. Seriously, for anyone who can't take criticism because you think critics just can't have fun with a children's movie just think "if what they addressed was applied to the movie, would it make it worse or better?"

      @@NicholasRSims Yes, Illumination tried to make this film as respectful to the source material as possible, and it worked. Does that mean that it stands out as its own film to most people who are not fans of the Mario franchise? No. If I were given a choice of what film to watch: “Encanto”, “Raya And The Last Dragon” or the Mario movie, I would pick “Encanto” definitely over those two films, in my opinion (not because the film is made by Disney, but because I think that film has better quality than the other two films). Just because Illumination made one film that has resonated with a lot of people doesn’t mean that the studio has surpassed Disney in quality. If anything, I think modern Disney and Illumination’s track record are one in the same: they both make hit-or-miss films.

But, a film, animated or otherwise, doesn’t need to have villains in order to be a good film. Lots of Ghibli films have antagonists but not true villains, or even no villains at all (with the exception of one film). But, I think most of their films are great, antagonist/villain or no, and I find their films to be way more superior to most of modern Disney or Illumination’s movies, including the Mario movie. Also, how do you mention “Puss In Boots: The Last Wish” without including the Big Bad Wolf/Death? LOL Just joking; I think Jack Horner’s a good villain, but I liked The Big Bad Wolf/Death more.

    Illumination never ceases to amaze me in their mediocrity, even when playing with an IP as recognizable and full of potentially amazing worlds and stories as Mario.

      Nintendo is many things, but stupid is not one of them. The reason they chose Illumination is because they didn't want a studio with anything resembling an "artistic vision". Contrary to what he may have said in recent interviews in an attempt to dispel this notion, Shigeru Miyamoto in particular has a well-documented contempt for video games that emphasize story. The last thing he wants is for the movies to give people any funny ideas about what the games could be. What we got in the Super Mario movie is perfect for him: A paper thin plot and characters stuffed with "REMEMBER THAT FROM THE GAMES???" moments.

    After seeing so many people on twitter going on and on about how good the movie was I had some hope. Then I watched it. It really felt like they were talking about a movie they imagined because the actual movie was so Not Good.

      @Bread And Circuses but 2/10 is way too low so it is not all valid on Adam's. It honestly does look impressive animation wise at least. Well after seeing it they did take it seriously and it worked out. This movie was not a "Design by Committee" movie created for Nintendo to advertise the games and their two amusement parks (they do not need the exposure which is why suggesting that the movie was created to advertise is such bullshit. Well it has characteriation and some depth but not much depth, there is some nnice artistic cinematography and shots like of the fire flower field or on top of those rocky cliff things, there is backstory and we see Mario and Luigis' family and even Princess Peachs' backstory, the storyline and narrative could be better though, thesis could be better too, actually most of the english voice acting is good. This movie does not look like a sub-90 minute commercial and the trailers did not spoil everything that's gonna happen in the film's plot. True but the Sonic movie was not bad. I mean you are wrong about Peach as near the end she is in trouble and is basically captured and does need help.
      The film was written by real hardcore Mario fans passionate over this series which explains all the mario references and even Donkey Kong references and even lore and stuff like the blue shell Koopa, it was not writtenn by psuedo fans who view this series as a souless cashgrab.

      I wasted a lot of time on getting to and from the theatre and watching the movie and blew 26 of Polish currency because people who are usually able to be critical of media kept saying that you'll have fun if you're a fan. They now and then brought up that this was despite the story. I feel more burnt by them than by Illumination and Nintendo.

    What frustrated me the most about this film is it's virtually no different than any other generic illumination movie with bad jokes and generic pop songs. It just has a Mario skin over it.
    Yet people act like it's any different.

      I have this feeling too. If I would talk to my friends after a movie and say I hated it, they would turn on me, and I felt like attacked after. I hated the new Oldboy, and was vocal about it, and I was ripped apart, everyone was saying I didn't know anything and I was stupid. I felt really bad. I looked up reviews for Oldboy and found this channel, and I felt like he saw everything I didn't like, and I kinda realized I made some bad choices in friends. Here I am, friendless, but at least I'm not treated like dirt, and Adam almost always has the same thoughts on a film I do. Oddly, I do feel less alone because of him and what he's doing.

    I just went back and watched your Detective Pikachu review, and you said something along the lines of, "If this was the first time we were introduced to this universe, would the film really be successful?" The film was successful because of the fandom. It's exactly the same with the Mario movie.

    • @ElFreakinCid
      @ElFreakinCid ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Exactly--hell, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet being released in such a sorry state and still having tons of people defend it and give it glowing reviews just shows that some things are indeed too big to fail, to the point where their absolute worst material will still be financially successful. And this movie and the reactions to it prove that further.

      My father is a late boomer and he didn't have a TV in his house until he was around 10. Even then, there was only one channel (PTV), which came on for two hours a day. It mainly aired a news programme and shorts such as music videos.
      This would be in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
      (Also note that this was in Pakistan. Maybe TV was more involved in other countries.)

      When someone says something you love is stupid or shoddily made, it's easy to interpret that as a backhanded insult that you are an idiot for enjoying it. That's obviously not what most critics are saying, but it's why fans always feel the need to defend what they love.
