Well, you see, it's funny because it's a reference to a thing you know. They do a thing that looks like another thing, and you recognize the thing, and that makes it funny. It's a thing you know, and it's funny because you know the thing. Don't you get it? You know the thing, and they referenced the thing. How is that not funny?
Ironically some kids won't understand some of the references in this film that relate to R rated movies or even old cartoons despite many of them going like, "Hey remember Matrix? Remember It? The Clockwork Orange guys? Rick And Morty? Peter Potomus? Jabberjaw? That yeti film presumably no one watched? 'Member that?"
I spent three years at a university studying game development and I never once saw anyone have a glitch that bluescreened their entire setup. The fact that the son just did that by accident and the glitch even deleted data off of his hard drive somehow is almost impressive, and makes me imagine he'd be better at programming computer viruses than games
Lol, the funny thing about what happened is that you need like one of the most hostile memory leak glitches in existence to cause that, the deletion of progress is not even possible then. It's crazy how they just decided we'll do this and no one will notice.
That kid acted like a 8 year old. It just didn't make sense and it frustrated me so much that some fu***** 8 year old is talking so much sh** like if he knew what the fu** he was talking about, that mf has never programmed shit. The comedy fu****** sucked
Haven't seen the movie, but if the writers wanted a Twitter joke at 4:00 they could have just had Granny say "Can't a lady check her tweets?" And have tweety bird on the screen. I came up with that joke literally on the spot
You know they didn't care to write the jokes when they are forced to reference twitter but they didn't think about the character in the movie that is named tweety.
As someone who watched the movie, it's even worse because Tweety isn't a part of any of those movie reference scenes where they hop from Warner Bros. property to Warner Bros. property to regather the Looney Tunes characters. It would have been so easy to include him in the Matrix scene to explain where he has been after Bugs was left alone on the Looney Tunes planet, especially considering Granny normally kept Tweety in a cage as a pet in old cartoons anyway and it would make sense if they went somewhere together
Hello. I’m a bit of an animator and have looked through the history for old movies like space jam. The reason the animation in space jam was so much better than new legacy was because it was made by pretty much veteran animators while new legacy was pretty much made by people coming out of college where they teach you how to make 2d puppets rather than hand drawn animation.
@@jon4715 I wouldnt say lost, theres plenty of people out there who have that skill its just that those people are totally ignored or just not under Warner or not looking for work
@@jon4715 i still think the skill exists looking at animators like worthikids and the team that makes hazbin hotel, i just don't think a multimedia corporation like warner wants to put in the investment so they hire non union animators and newly minted animators who can complete the work for less
@@bogmanhimself4656 There are some, but I find it hard to believe that the scores of veteran animators in the US (and later Japan) wouldn't be the best traditional cel-animators out there. And the very same ones who are aging out of the industry. Digital and cg-assisted animation is pretty depressing looking to me. But I'll check out the companies you mentioned. Like in 20 years, do you think we'll have as many great car mechanics as we had before EV's? Definitely not, there are tons of examples of lost arts.
We still exist and there’s a good number of us. Maybe not original Space Jam level but you’d be shocked what animators put their stuff on youtube FOR FREE. Chances are as said above; WB just wanted to exploit non-union kids coming right out of college because they’re easier to force into crunch times and poor pay. However, the biggest problem it looks to me is not just the animation, but whoever the animation director in charge was is absolutely TERRIBLE at shot composition and storyboarding. Which has a lot to do with why it looks like shit.
But… why was she invented? Why is her design just “girl bugs bunny” if she’s supposed to be the best at basketball? Are you seriously under the impression that she was in no way whatsoever added because they needed a love interest for bugs?
@@randomness928 No I'm not under that impression. She was invented as Bugs' love interest. But she was not invented to be an incapable, helpless damsel in distress. She was skilled and talented and Bugs never felt threatened or insecure by that. Quite the contrary even. She's written as straight-talking, no-nonsense, independent and confident. In Lola's own words, don't ever call her 'Doll'.
"What happened to the animation?" They outsourced it and neglected to credit a large fraction of the artists involved, NAMELY their CHARACTER DESIGNER... that is, until people on Twitter got loud as hell about it, and Warner Bros backpedaled by thanking said artists in a single fucking tweet. Also an important note: CGI is non-union.
"CGI is non-union" YEP! That'll do it. My country has a bunch of positions that people in my country literally cannot do without falling behind on their bills and becoming homeless or living in assisted living facilities. Low skill workers in a single household income are expected to work 90 (NINETY) hours a week to be able to live on their own. So instead of pushing policies to increase the wages or help depress the cost of living, the government imports temporary foreign workers from countries where they're used to being treated like slaves and living with 87 roommates. Also, guess which group is ineligible to sign up for unions? That's right, thus enabling employers to treat them like shit on top of not paying them enough, which stagnates wages.
Corporations are incapable of understanding context. They only see numbers and dollar signs. So of course they can’t wrap their bottom lines around why Pepe is problematic, only that he is.

@@jakespacepiratee3740 I was gonna complain about this stuff, but then Adam mentioned how this dialogue is just a distraction from the movie's lameness, and I agreed.
@@jakespacepiratee3740 When the conversation was centred on the character's design and sexualization of children's characters, I think the sides each political stance took make sense. IDK if you've heard of a guy called TheQuartering, but he's an anti-SJW type who made a rant about Jill from the resident evil 3 remake having a longer skirt... I wish I was making that up. Had fuck all to do with characterization, just aesthetic design.
As a woman it's really annoying that that's the route they went with Lola, it's purely performative activism. Like, some of us do look like that, what would be not-sexualizing Lola would be how you have other characters interact with her, the camera shots you choose to make, the music that plays when she's on screen, not altering her appearance, like what the fuck. It's the same shit they did with Miss Bellum on the rebooted Powerpuff Girls. Don't erase the character, just have them be respected and not oogled over. Like removing them is almost as to say women can't be respected unless they look a certain way, which is running in the opposite direction of something they're pretending to care about.
Shout outs to the PPG reboot also just completely flattening out Ms. Keane's breasts; they weren't even a little bit sexualized, they were two lines. That with the Bellum thing just came across so weirdly.
Honestly the main problem with Lola is that her _"The Looney Tunes Show"_ iteration was so unbelievably perfect that anything else would be a stark downgrade in comparison.
@@wisemage0 YES! I’m so glad I’m not the only one who remembers that show and how perfect Lola was in it! She is was great in that show. She had an actual personality
The rap battle scene physically hurt my bones. You can tell it was one of these corny Hollywood ass writers that came up with all the bars. It was like elementary school bars they should’ve hired a rapper 😭😭😭😭😭😭
yeah that moment was just horrendous but at least its not out of character for the tunes to do that considering they did rap in some cartoons, and they were selling t shirts of them being rappers at the time of the first film, so its a nice little reference at least
I feel like I'm missing something regarding Lola. In the original, wasn't she the only toon who knew how to play basketball? Why is everybody saying her only role was as Bugs's love interest? She was the best player for the toons
She was also a subversion of expectations. She had the super sexy introduction and looked like she was only there to be eye candy and Bugs' love interest, but then she turned out to be a tomboy and screwed with people who dared to sexualize her. Shouldn't the people opposed to objectifying women support a character who can be confident in her appearance and still enjoy traditionally masculine hobbies?
Ok so are you actually suggesting that the character was designed solely because they needed a new looney tunes character who knew basketball. I think you’re just delusional if you think that her conception had nothing to do with adding a love interest.
@@randomness928 I said her being bug's love interest wasn't her ONLY role. Lola seems to have this reputation of being a completely empty character, which is not at all true. There is nothing wrong with adding an OC to be a romantic interest, as long as they are also their own character
2:33 This 45 second rant is the angriest and loudest I’ve ever heard Adum. I fully expect my speaker to implode when his Lion King (2019) review comes out.
And it’s an analingus joke in a movie for people too young to know what that is. This is why the Pitch Meeting of this movie was on point like Baryshnikov.
@@K.Marie119 because I obviously can't speak for the hundreds of thousands of channels offering criticism? Pretty easy to see, or at least I thought so.
It truly was a lightning in a bottle movie. But the thing is, they didn’t even try to replicate it well. If they had drawn in mostly fresh cultural references, it might have been mediocre instead of shit. But they went with freaking Austin Powers and the Matrix. If they had been surgical and relevant with the WB references, it could have been decent. But they threw the kitchen sink at it, zero restraint.
I remember joking to my friend that since the Looney Tunes weren’t as “relevant” as they were in the 90’s, Space Jam 2 would have Lebron James playing basketball with a random group of the most popular Pokemon.
@@Circuitssmith I dunno about Austin Powers, but remember The Matrix is getting another movie soon, so this was probably a calculated effort to get the IP back into people's heads to prime them for it.
@@Exotac That’s just cynical enough to be true. This movie tries to be so many different kinds of advertisement and PR manipulation instead of just being a good movie, and ironically it fails miserably at those too.
Finally, someone said what I was thinking about Lola bunny. I get she wasn't the deepest of characters in the original space jam, but she more than just sexy. That LITERALLY the entire point of her character. She showed up and asked to be on the team, immediatly Bugs looked at her as eye candy and she shows him up on the court and EARNS a bit of respect from the team. She was talented, confident and demanded respect WHILE being a good looking chick (Bunny). I'm just so confused as to when being attractive automatically meant that you're noting more than a piece of meat for men and nothing else. It's actually really frustrating to think about.
Yeah, I guess the original Lola just hated being gawked at. If you complemented her by saying "You look really good" and things like that instead of acting like a pig, she wouldn't have problems.

I saw the other reviews Adam is talking about where they find very little issues with A New Legacy because "the first one bad too so shut up" and I was just so put off by them. Thanks, Adam, for coming in with actual criticism.
I was honestly very glad he decided to do this, because I saw those videos too and thought that they were stupid Yeah, the first Space Jam is dumb and very cheesy, but just because that movie was dumb, it gives the studio carte Blanche to do a lazy, soulless cash grab with no real redeemable qualities? It’s almost like those people think that judging by those videos, and it’s crazy.
I was pretty disappointed when drew gooden made that Space Jam video that was exactly as you put it. I liked his criticisms of the first one but his criticisms were to say "well the 2nd one wasn't that bad, look at the first"
It's so silly... More silly than "it's for kids", but in _either_ case, the obvious retort is, "What, so you _want_ to eat/feed your kid garbage?? Why _not_ pick something good if you could for the same price!?" (not like movie tickets are more expensive for a good movie on opening day ... yet)
When Smiling Friends, an animated show on Adult Swim, has better lip-synching than a 150-million dollar movie, you know that you are officially regressing the entire medium.
Smiling friends was made by people who gave a shit. Space Jam 2 was made by people assigned by suits ticking a box so they can make a profit for their shareholders.
Here's something that bothers me. You guys noticed that in the sequel the actual sport of basketball takes a major backseat? In the first movie everything revolved around basketball. Little Mike is practicing his shots. The Looney Toons challenge the aliens to basketball, which was a somewhat smart move. The aliens went to various basketball games to steal the basketball talent from famous basketball players. The Looney Toons, desperate for help, seeks out the greatest basketball player of that time. The soft moment showing the basketball stars struggling makes it clear just how important basketball is to these people. The game, though extremely Looney, was still a basketball game. I know I said basketball a lot but it shows just how important this sport was to the movie. In the sequel it's clear that they're focus is on video games and sucking off WB properties. The actual sport barely plays a role in the movie until the game itself. Which isn't really the sport of basketball as the rules are centered more around the video game as oppose to the actual sport. For any future writers. Don't make basketball take a back seat to your basketball movie.
That's actually a really good point. The first Space Jam played fast and loose with the rules of b-ball to be sure, but there was at least a focus on the game and its culture. You could replace Space Jam 2's game with literally anything else and it really wouldn't change the story.
While I admit that challenging the aliens to play basketball was necessary to make the story they wanted to tell work, it was not a "somewhat smart move" at all. They could have challenged them to a track and field race and had them compete against the Roadrunner or Speedy.
@@dardanik Basketball was one of the many sports that they could have chosen which would have given them a huge advantage. They can't run, they can't jump, they can't throw, and they don't seem all that coordinated with their body. Even after they got bigger they were still limited to the rules. So there was still a chance. Basketball was a great choice even if it's not the only choice they could have used. Also track and field is more than just racing. The field is a pretty key component to that sport.
5:13 Plus, that that Pulp Fiction reference was both A) funny and B ) situationally appropriate. It took place right after the Toons had used the 'Secret Stuff' and were actually holding their own in the game, and it wasn't just two random characters that were used. Yosemite Sam and Elmer Fudd have _always_ had guns as part of their routines, and you didn't get much cooler aesthetically in the mid-to-late 90s than Pulp Fiction. If it were just for 'haha, reference!' then they could have used anyone because it wouldn't matter. Instead, they used two characters who were infamous for how generally harmless and impotent they are _despite_ how liberally they use their guns. Compare and contrast with the godawful laziness of the Granny/Matrix/Twitter reference. And the worst part of that? In the _ten_ _fecking_ _seconds_ I spent thinking about that combination, I came up with a better joke using those same components! You could have had Granny all Matrix'd out doing offscreen, intense computer stuff, and then the punchline is that it's revealed she's struggling and failing to use Twitter properly. It would be a bait-and-switch gag that's an actual _joke_ instead of just being a reference, and it works to use Granny because part of the joke relies on how old folks struggle with new technology to the point where the act of using Twitter may as well be Matrix-tier techno wizardry. I'm not saying it's a _good_ joke, but it's at least _a_ joke, and I came up with it as a passing thought while making this post about why the Pulp Fiction gag worked in the original. It took me, some randy on the internet, mere seconds to _accidentally_ write better jokes than the hacks behind this film. EDIT: Added timestamp for convenience.
Wow. I actually laughed just THINKING about that granny joke and the payoff. It's crazy what someone can do with just a little bit of forethought and maybe giving a shit for two seconds.
That sorta reminds me of how The Mitchell's vs The Machines did that as well. The fate of humanity rested on Rick trying to click on one of Katie's TH-cam videos, and somehow Rick made it harder for himself cause he changed the language of the computer to Spanish, and other gags like that. Not to mention the last joke about how he had figure out how to subscribe to her channel, and the cutaway shows that it was literal doomsday for him.
it made no money so..thats hard to do in 2021 when kids watch anything for popularity and people support all art so it does not fail...they tried to make a bad film
I love how Adam didn’t give a spoiler warning for the film as he normally does. He knows that no one cares enough about this movie’s plot that it can be considered spoiler-able.
As an animator in the industry, man, it hurt watching this film. I'm so glad you mentioned the animation, I felt so alone in thinking it was pretty bad. Sympathy for the poor buggers who had to do it.
I really wish they'd stop using the iron giant in shit like this. That's a fantastic movie with a huge amount of merit so seeing it just like, haphazardly thrown into a "MEMBER THIS?!" scenario annoys me.
They will bleed the iron giant dry from a thousand cameos, but never give it a sequel. Pisses me off. But I guess it’s for the best considering that this is what the sequel treatment would mean, die a hero before you live to see yourself become the villain.
to be honest, i was pretty hyped to see him in ready player one just because of how much i love iron giant. i guess i just wanted other people to see it and go "YO IRON GIANT!" but i bet most of the people that saw him just saw a giant robot, not the same dude i grew up with... after that cameo, i was good if he didnt show up in anything ever again, but i guess WB now know they have people who love him, so they are gunna milk the shit outta him in cameos, and not a sequel, but maybe its for the best...
100% Agree with you, they went from having him be this iconic rememberable loving character in a great movie to a brand they just slap on the surface of every movie just so people can watch it, Warner bros is really just milking everything from their own franchises for what it's worth
Most overrated animated movie of the 90s. Please stop flogging this log. It bombed and bombed hard deservedly so because of their attempt to tie it into that stupid sitcom on NBC they also produced.
anytime studios pats themselves for how progressive they are with women it always means "a bunch of old suits decided to play pretend while doing nothing", so the character is 9/10 going to be empty, with a token "strong" moment but then will need to be saved anyway
@@ElFreakinCid that annoys me because then you get complete idiots going "ugh woke shit is ruining everything" when really what is ruining "everything" are suits trying to market shit
lola had her moments in the original where she put someone in their place anytime they called her 'doll' and she was skilled at basketball. she only ever really needed to be saved once and that was just for romantic effect. i don't get why they reduced her so much even if it has to do with her sexual appeal from the first movie. like, directors know that women CAN be strong and feminine at the same time, right??? those two factors can easily coexist. you don't need to sacrifice your femininity in order to be a strong character in a movie.
Thing for me is, I thought we all agreed that crazy-Lola from the Looney Tunes Show was a lot more fun than how she was in Space Jam 1. Seems like a waste to reference things like Big Chungus but apparently not pull in that personality for her. Would have given her character more to work with.
Y'know, when I saw Lola in this movie, I thought "What is this tiny, squat rabbit doing on a basketball court?" The older version of Lola looked not just like she COULD play, but she DID play basketball. She was tall, thin with an athletic build; the kind of physique befitting an athlete. This one looks like LeBron will crush her on a jumpshot. She's small, thin with no build, and looks more like an office worker than an athlete of any type.
That's a good point. Whatever one's feelings about the original Lola, she did at least look like she could play ball. This version seems kind of dumpy, which might've worked if it had been a story about how she's gotten out of shape and needs to get back in the groove, but that's clearly not the case.
@@libRteedude Damn. That almost sounds like it could have been an interesting...oh, what's the phrase..."Character Arc"? The film was too long, and LeBron's lack of acting ability was... mind-blowing. The best parts was seeing the other films and properties that they owned, purely because I was left thinking, "Wow... they own that?" I adored the original. It was visually engaging and I liked Michael. I didn't care for this father-son story. The game that the son created was also just too polished for it to be believable. I don't remember a single song from this one. I honestly believe they made LeBron into a cartoon, because he cannot act. I thought they made Lola less pretty, and I don't like tits either, nor am I a furry. The 3D versions were ugly. Justice for Pepe Le Pew.
The Pepe Le Pew thing is fine on paper. I actually think them cutting him out is understandable given his character making some people uncomfortable. That’s somewhat understandable even if I don’t agree. Also at least he doesn’t have to be associated with this garbage movie. What ISN’T understandable in the slightest is them doing that, but still keeping background shots of the Droogs from A Clockwork Orange in the movie! For those who haven’t seen Kubrick’s masterpiece, the Droogs are ACTUAL RAPISTS AND MURDERERS. They have done infinitely worse things than Pepe Le Pew could ever think of doing. Also… why? I agree. Frankly all the references to other properties made me sad. It's basically watching a monopolist brag about all the brands he's swallowed up, oof. The original was fun! And Michael Jordan's not bad as an actor -- I have fond memories of seeing him in funny commercials as a kid (especially the iconic "boxers or briefs?" commercial). As for the designs, I think they did a bad job all-round :/ including Lola's outfit and make-up that looks even weirder in 3D.
michael's lesson he had to learn was, well, essentially doing the things he enjoyed which was basketball. he had a great relationship with his son even if it wasn't the focal point of the story. sooo why did they make it to where lebron needed to learn to treat his son like a basic human being and not an extension of himself. like, was i supposed to be warmed at the fact lebron took his son to game development camp instead of forcing him to keep doing basketball??? wow what great character development 😐
A good example of what this movie is trying to do with its “comedy” would be something like The LEGO Movie. The movie itself is an advertisement for toys, and it’s filled with references to other media that, who guessed it, actually turns out to be funny, as they cared about making a comedy more then advertising other properties.
I've never seen Adam getting so angry over a film to the point where he screams his contempt towards it. Not even Unfriended or The Visit received this much fire from him, that's impressive
To be frank I find his rant kinda annoying and I understand he wants to criticize this movie and want not and that's fine. But at the same time wtf did he expect like it's fucking space jam you know the last movie with a lot of fetishes.
What people sometimes forget is that even if a movie is “bad”, you can still have a lot of fun with it and point out things that you really liked in it. That’s my problem with the whole “well, the first Space Jam is bad so of course this one is too” argument. There’s a reason you remember the original Space Jam if you watched it. Whether it was good or bad it was at least memorable. Space Jam: A New Legacy has nothing new going for it as far as I can tell aside from being bad, and not in a memorable way.
I would argue that Space Jam is actually a good movie. It's something that you actually enjoy watching, even if it's laughing at the absurdity of it when the movie tries to take itself too seriously. It fills its purpose of being entertaining and engaging to the audience, and as such *is a good movie.* This new one on the other hand actively annoys you, bores you, and pushes you away from finishing it.
@@VulpesHilarianus I thought good movies had decent acting or humor, Space Jam has none, it's a boring, cheap, lazy, juvenile and stupid overrated film.

The Matrix scene was actually beyond painful and i actually hated every single time Granny was on screen. Also god thank you for you noting Lola being somehow worse in this one. Her face is uncanny it constantly freaked me out.
I know Lola’s characterization in that show is kind of divisive for people, but I genuinely think it works well after her first few appearances once the writers got a better hold on her role in the show. She plays really well off of Bugs and Daffy, and I wish WB would meld some of those aspects into her standard personality going forward. Having the three of them form a comedic trio constantly flipping between being deadpan snarkers and “looney” characters has a lot of potential imo. Also the Looney Tunes Show redesign was better than this movie’s. She’s cute and cartoony there, not sexy at all, but it works because she was designed to fit in with the other characters. Space Jam 2 Lola’s face just makes me cringe.
Funny how Purists even hated that starting off. Hell they were under the notion that Lola was a mistake that should have been erased in the name of Chuck Jones Chivalry and nonsense. But I don't see a stalker as any better than the previous. Either way. I like all of them equally. Not this "who's the better Lola and who's the trash one." Now I have a esoteric proposal that would fix her, but anyone who's in the corner of "please make me laugh with slapstick humor like in TLTS" will scoff. It has her 1996 self goin insane at her detractors ala Space Jam 1 plot style after putting down the demons in hell for abandoning her like a mistake. Letting a demon worshipper send her to Hell. She'd be Looney in the literal Sarah Connor sense.
Lola as a comedic character was great. Space Jam 2 made her a completely serious character with no personality or “Looniness”. Looney Tunes Show made her FEEL like a Looney Tunes character. This movie just made her a generic character.
I agree, I would be fine if they changed Lola’s personality , but they replaced it with nothing, but an empty feeling. I also didn’t understand her “Wonder Woman” trail. Were Bugs and Lebron not just in DC World? Are there 2 DC comics worlds?
Afraid of the internet crowd being confused at her character showing any kind of interesting trait so they decide to play it safe and "cover up" her because babies be babies about legal of age animated characters being drawn a certain way (and not even THAT graphic).
One thing I will say about the Goon Squad: Their powers aren't random. They're references to the players nicknames and signature playstyles. Because hey: Space Jam is also a sports movie and Basketball fans deserve fan service too
Ah yes, my favourite playstyle. The lamia. Though to be fair I know basically nothing about basketball, or any sport for that matter, so could you please elaborate? Genuinely curious.
Here's the thing, the Goon Squad is still nothing compared to the Monstars, the basketball players they chose in one are iconic stars that people who haven't even heard of basketball players might know, like Larry Bird and Charles Barkley, and the designs on the Monstars helped you figure out who was which basketball player, I literally couldn't tell who the basketball players were in the NBA All Star segment in New Legacy or who they were when the Goon Squad was on the field
@@lacijuhos7613 For your pleasure: Chronos' powers are from Damian Lillard, known for his clutch shooting and range, often called "Dame Time", hence his skillset. The White Mamba aka Diana Taurasi is a female player who was given the nickname by Kobe Bryant, who himself was known as the "Black Mamba". Killer instinct on the court etc, as the mamba is one of the most venomous snakes in existence. The Brow is the nickname of Anthony Davis, known for his insane wingspan and literal unibrow. Hence, well, the wings and unibrow. Arachnneka is Nneka Ogwumike, who is known as an insanely good defensive player, so a bunch of arms references her ability to get stops in-game and knack for "locking players down". And Wet-Fire is about Klay Thompson, who is both known as one of the two "Splash Brothers" with Stephen Curry (aka the two best shooters in the game), while also referencing that a player scoring a bunch of points in a row is known to be "on fire". Klay once scored 37 points in a quarter, the most in NBA history, without a single miss. So yeah, the original comment is correct here.
I feel like the biggest difference between the two is that while yes, both are corporate cash grabs when you get down to it, the first was a confluence of big pop cultural moments; it wasn't just the height of Michael Jordan's career, but the Looney Tunes themselves were experiencing a huge resurgence in popularity among kids thanks to cable reruns and new series like Taz-mania and Tiny Toons. Kids liked Michael Jordan, kids liked Looney Tunes, let's have Michael Jordan get up to Looney Tunes antics. It was a chocolate and peanut butter kind of cash grab; it was still stupid, but it made some level of sense to do it. Meanwhile, this one is purely predicated on irony, memes, and nostalgia-wank. Like, yeah, Lebron James is popular, but the Looney Tunes are nowhere close to their 90s second wind, though not for lack of trying. The Tunes are directly important to the plot of the first film, since it's their freedom on the line. Here, they're just there because they were in the first movie and WB owns them; shit, arguably it'd make more sense to replace them with WB-owned video game characters, considering the plot's more about VR and video games. The only reason this stopped being an idea they kicked around every so often that I can see is because Ready Player One managed to make bank peddling nostalgia-wank and some guy in marketing went "Oh yeah, according to our copyright bots, songs crossed with Space Jam are popular. Let's just do that again." I was going to finish with "But it made a bunch of money, so what do I know," but it's been out a month and hasn't made back its budget yet, lol.
I mean let’s be real, the first movie was just as much of a corporate cash grab as any other film. But you could tell that the people that actually made the film (not the board execs) had some passion and love poured into it.

I don't agree with the decision to remove him but comparing a main character with speaking roles to some background cameos that require previous knowledge to even be recognizable is a stretch.
@@soapbiter36577 except it isn't...they could have had Pepe as a background character somewhere. He is known for relentlessly chasing women around he is infatuated with and that is a negative message to a young generation, but they added actual gang rapists to a movie for children.

One thing about Space Jam that didn’t hit me until I was older was the scene between kid MJ and his father. If you were not aware MJ’s dad was murdered and his death lead to MJ going to Baseball. Super small scene but after learning that makes it soo much better to me on an emotional level. But that’s just my opinion
Correct. It was also rumored that his father’s robbery and murder was connected to Jordan’s secret gambling addiction. That the two young men were hired to kill his father.
I forgot about that. As a kid that made it so special to me that MJ was essentially trying to find his passion for basketball again. It was like the most zany personal journey. This movie is probably barely even enjoyable to kids
@@etalex7074 yeah I get that but even the worst movies are fun when you can freely pick them apart with friends. One of the most fun nights I had during the first covid shutdown was when a group of my friends hopped in discord and all watched Dragonball: Evolution with drinks!
The original Space jam honestly feels like a masterpiece compared to the new one. About 20 minutes into this one I turned it off and just watched the original. I know there's a lot of bad things about it but it really does a lot of heart. I feel like some people who made it understood the loony tunes and had some fun with it. The new one feels souless
Yeah, she looks really old for some reason. And her 3d model is really distracting compare to other characters. I also don't like tits but come on, her design is just too bland
@Puss in Boots because media doesn't exist in a vacuum and it's bad when one gender is consistently being depicted as solely existing for romantic and sexual conquest. a character being created for a specific purpose does not make that purpose good.
Slight correction (which only strengthens the point a bit more, really) - the OG Space Jam's soundtrack peaked at #5 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. it peaked at *#2* on the Billboard 200. Pretty remarkable really. It's also worth noting that the album charted highly and was certified Gold or Platinum in multiple countries too.
people do legit shit on mj's acting and while meh its to be expected when he is playing himself and he has to interact with nothing...just saying...i actually liked his subdued acting
@@razkable Yeah, MJ's acting wasn't great, but the film worked around it by making him the stoic and grounded one of the bunch. He didn't have to do a lot of intense emotions, unlike Lebron, whose acting weaknesses feel more apparent because the writers decided to give him more to do acting-wise.
You didn't even talk about the how the basketball game had ZERO tension because the points were based off of style??? Like who the hell thought that was a good idea? If the tunes are down 1000 it DOESN'T MATTER AT ALL because they can get it all back in two shots
I kinda liked it because the style thing emphasized that the animators could do whatever they wanted cause it’s not actually a basketball game but a video game. I thought the ideas presented (animation-wise) were pretty interesting and they manage to put in tension through other means, like starting out with the looney tunes loosing hard until they let go of sticking to basketball rules, and having the thing with the algorithm hacking the game. maybe it’s not as tense compared to the original, though, I don’t really remember(if you do, it would be cool if you could remind me on how they did it) I didn’t like the CGI but imagined it as the algorithm appealing to being more “modern” with CGI’s popularity, and that made me feel better. and I liked how the son switches sides so the narrative avoids the son being villainozed by society after the story’s over. ~~~ however, the visual gags didn’t feel very unique a lot of the time, and the story isn’t particularly amazing. but personally, I didn’t find the original spacejam’s story memorable either(I watched it for the first time a year ago). soundtrack was super good, though.
The reason why the original movie was called Space Jam was because the aliens came from space and it involved the NBA Jam. A New Legacy had NO NBA Jam and it was all in a video game. Seriously these movie studios need to fuck off with the video game bullshit, it’s really starting to piss people off.
In the first Space Jam, Lola Bunny was THE ONE addressing the sexualization of the character! Yes, she was sexualized, yes, she owned it, and yes, she didn't want to be judged SOLELY by it! More mature than just making her a Bugs Bunny 2 with a butt shot XD
Given that the 2D animation team was not credited in the film, only in a Twitter post by Warner weeks after the film's release due to backlash, I doubt they were treated well during production.
Wasn't Lebron James the asshole who doxxed a police officer who saved a girl from being stabbed to death? Real good role model for the kids right there.
6:33 unfortunately a lot a animated movies of the 90s are still better than some recent ones because now even with better technology, the producers want to invest always less money in the project
The argument "the first one was bad so it doesn't matter" makes no sense to me. If anything, that means the new one should try to be better, and it's really disappointing that it's not.
7:06 That's a perfectly sound theory when I remembered, and just looked it up to confirm, that Zendaya wasn't even cast as Lola Bunny until April 3, AFTER the trailer released! Even I was thinking "Don't the animation departments need to first "sketch out" according to the voice actors' performances before they even commit to a final take?" I can never affiliate Zendaya voice to any Lola design, and she comes off like a terrible anime dub.
I can't even fathom why they made that choice, I bet it was solely because Zendaya's a big name right now. But yeah, it was real nice of them to bring back Kath Soucie only to dub over her because her name isn't goddamn marketable enough. And actually, usually the storyboards and sometimes light animatic work comes first, then voice acting, then the actual animation, so that the actors have a general idea of what the scene they're acting out is going to look like and the animators have something to actually animate the mouths to.
I have quite some programming knowledge, and I can tell you that performing a common move that causes a game to crash and delete a character is some next-level shoddy programming. You would almost have to do it on purpose to make sure that can happen.
and isn't the kid portrayed as some kind of game developer prodigy, considering the level of complexity and polish he can put into the game at that age? imagine writing a plot device so incredibly obvious
Like why not write a complex glitch into the movie script and make it a plot point, where LeBron struggles to remember it, or he shows he knew it all along and didn’t want to hurt his kid’s self-esteem by winning right away?
I don't know about gaming, but with Mongo and SQL databases, you have to explicitly request a "delete" command to delete an object. It won't work unless your syntax is perfect, so yes, you cannot do that on accident.
Space Jam is like a corporate idea that the filmmakers actually took seriously and put heart into (that soundtrack had no right being as good as it is). Space Jam 2 is taking the same idea and just actually making another corporate cash grab.
Fun fact, the original movie was literally an ad for an ad. It was inspired by Nike commercials featuring Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny. And it's still a better movie than this pile of trash.
7:56 "What happend" Simple, most of the budget went to salaries for the cast, director, producers and a lot of people that didn't do any actual work on the movie. It didn't go to the production of the actual movie because "It doesn't matter. People will see it anyway." and on top of that you can just say "It's for kids" that in the mind of the avarage person gives it carte blanche to do whatever. I wouldn't be surprised if the actual animation staff just got the basic budget of a standard 20 minute cartoon network episode.
I really, *really* appreciate that this video immediately kicks off with mentioning the significance of the first film's soundtrack because it is, in fact, that good. 🎵🎧🎵
The fact that A New Legacy was so bad actually is relieving to me. I honestly believe it was made with an algorithm (the plot, ideas, and scenes, not the animation obviously) and the fact that using algorithms and generated formulas results in this uncanny disconnected mess means we can't rely on them to replace actual care and intent
Nah just means they haven't refined it enough yet. Matter of time, I'm afraid. But hey, if androids can dream of electric sheep, they can surely write good fiction as well.
Yeah, no. If you actually know anything about AI in a creative context, it's obvious that they cannot and will not ever be able to apply an artist's hand to work because they can only perceive doing the given task as efficiently as possible with no taste or flair. Same reason AI-smoothed animation looks like garbage lol Sorry to dunk on the doomers who replied, but the day will never come when AI can effectively replace creative minds.
@@pureevil9496 We were never going to do and see a lot of things throughout history. Keep thinking you actually have any kind of grasp of what is actually possible or not, lol.
@@pureevil9496 If you're referring to what I think you are, it's relevant that the technology used for interpolating frames in animation wasn't actually trained for that purpose. It was trained to interpolate frames for sports events and similar live action media, and it performs a lot better in that context. Anyway your position that an artificial agent is only interested in doing something as efficiently as possible isn't quite right. With the modern model of a learning agent (or at least the one I'm familiar with and have worked with a little) you can train them to maximize any attribute of their performance as long as you have a matching evaluation function to give them feedback. (this may be a bit oversimplified but I'm trying not to get too deep into it) I agree that these problems are basically impossible for our current models due to their inherent subjectivity and the lack of a tractable model of what is good or bad art, but I think you're being a bit close-minded about what AI is capable of and what could be possible in the future, even if it is a distant future.

Yup, the talent that was available then was absurdly better than now. It's like a lost art, very sad.

@@bogmanhimself4656 There are some, but I find it hard to believe that the scores of veteran animators in the US (and later Japan) wouldn't be the best traditional cel-animators out there.

YEP!

I saw the other reviews Adam is talking about where they find very little issues with A New Legacy because "the first one bad too so shut up" and I was just so put off by them. Thanks, Adam, for coming in with actual criticism.
Nothing is immune to criticism. That is, unless its for kids, or supposed to be comedy, which then its automatically the next Hot Fuzz or Toy Story
I was honestly very glad he decided to do this, because I saw those videos too and thought that they were stupid
Yeah, the first Space Jam is dumb and very cheesy, but just because that movie was dumb, it gives the studio carte Blanche to do a lazy, soulless cash grab with no real redeemable qualities? It’s almost like those people think that judging by those videos, and it’s crazy.
I was pretty disappointed when drew gooden made that Space Jam video that was exactly as you put it. I liked his criticisms of the first one but his criticisms were to say "well the 2nd one wasn't that bad, look at the first"
Classic whataboutism
Well, they sorta weren't playing real basketball so even then in the game there wasn't much actual basketball

Yeah, your joke is better lol

I really wish they'd stop using the iron giant in shit like this. That's a fantastic movie with a huge amount of merit so seeing it just like, haphazardly thrown into a "MEMBER THIS?!" scenario annoys me.
They will bleed the iron giant dry from a thousand cameos, but never give it a sequel. Pisses me off. But I guess it’s for the best considering that this is what the sequel treatment would mean, die a hero before you live to see yourself become the villain.

ok but that doesn't really apply to lola. they weren't progressive because she's still kind of sexualized in the new one

If Adum is screaming before 3 minutes mark of the review you know you're in for a treat.
I have gotten so used to his monotone voice that his anger scared me
Y'know, when I saw Lola in this movie, I thought "What is this tiny, squat rabbit doing on a basketball court?" The older version of Lola looked not just like she COULD play, but she DID play basketball.
Like, she's not as good as she was, but through teamwork and friendship she's able to get back her style and show her skills.
Ironically, this would have done the job they were trying to do in making her not just Bug's romantic interest and made her her own thing. But naaaah. Less boobs=Strong, female character.
Funny thing was back when I watched the first movie I didn't see her as "the sexualized love interest" I just saw "the one Looney Tune who actually could play basketball."

As bad as LeBron's acting is his son's is ten times worse.
michael's lesson he had to learn was, well, essentially doing the things he enjoyed which was basketball. he had a great relationship with his son even if it wasn't the focal point of the story. sooo why did they make it to where lebron needed to learn to treat his son like a basic human being and not an extension of himself. like, was i supposed to be warmed at the fact lebron took his son to game development camp instead of forcing him to keep doing basketball??? wow what great character development 😐
A good example of what this movie is trying to do with its “comedy” would be something like The LEGO Movie.
Even if it was bad, it actually influenced culture and stuck around in people's memories. This one surely won't.
@@Hemlocker Oh, it will, from idiots crying about how complaints are just from nostalgic manbabies.
But I mean, what was even really that bad about the first one (aside from Jordan’s acting, maybe).

I would've taken Marvin over Granny any day
It really says something when Lola in The Looney Tunes Show had more character and personality than both Space Jams ever gave her.
baby looney tunes lola ftw...shes actually likeable in that show
The looney tunes show is fire
Not this "who's the better Lola and who's the trash one."
Now I have a esoteric proposal that would fix her, but anyone who's in the corner of "please make me laugh with slapstick humor like in TLTS" will scoff. It has her 1996 self goin insane at her detractors ala Space Jam 1 plot style after putting down the demons in hell for abandoning her like a mistake. Letting a demon worshipper send her to Hell. She'd be Looney in the literal Sarah Connor sense.
The Lola Bunny in “The Looney Tunes Show” was leagues above what ever this film was doing. Kristen Wiig really brings a lot to the character.
BIG agree
I hate how they seem to have such an aversion to referencing anything from that show, like come on a good personality was RIGHT THERE
Afraid of the internet crowd being confused at her character showing any kind of interesting trait so they decide to play it safe and "cover up" her because babies be babies about legal of age animated characters being drawn a certain way (and not even THAT graphic).
One thing I will say about the Goon Squad:
Their powers aren't random.
I was so looking forward to seeing new scenes with the new players and there was none of that
Lol
Let's just do that again."
I was going to finish with "But it made a bunch of money, so what do I know," but it's been out a month and hasn't made back its budget yet, lol.
It's also a way for LeBron to claw back some more good faith since donating more money didn't work after he started sucking China off.
Well said.
Maybe if LeBron wasn’t such a piece of shit, the movie would of made a bit more money back.

you're telling me that after the movie happened the writers somehow came up with the idea of giving LeBron fuckin PTSD??? MAN
I like how Daffy Duck said "I look expensive" when he turned 3D, it's like the movie was admitting the 2D animation looked cheap.
It’s even gives the middle finger to 2D animation and 3D animation is the future from now on
Yeah I thought that was odd... isn't 2D MORE expensive than 3D and that's the main reason the 'switch' happened?
@@JonathanGaeta I Know! I fucking hate how Hollywood portrays hand drawn animation now. The comments made by Jon favreau still piss me off!
@@zosiaturek8975 what'd he say?
@@rangedfire8179 Jon Favreau said during an interview for the Lion King live action movie that 2D animation is done in the modern era only for nostalgia and nothing else. 3D animation is the evolution of animation and 2D is just lesser, the "old way".
@@plawson8577 such a bullshit rumor that I unfortunately humored all the way until I watched the documentary.
I forgot about that. As a kid that made it so special to me that MJ was essentially trying to find his passion for basketball again. It was like the most zany personal journey. This movie is probably barely even enjoyable to kids
I’m now hoping Adam had recorded a commentary over the film.
they did an Adum and Pals for og Space Jam so maybe they will do one for this one!
@@lmcdoug23 idk, I don’t think he ever even wants to think about this movie again. The OG is at least fun
@@etalex7074 yeah I get that but even the worst movies are fun when you can freely pick them apart with friends. One of the most fun nights I had during the first covid shutdown was when a group of my friends hopped in discord and all watched Dragonball: Evolution with drinks!
Can’t wait for an hour of groaning and the occasional “... What is this”
The original Space jam honestly feels like a masterpiece compared to the new one. About 20 minutes into this one I turned it off and just watched the original. I know there's a lot of bad things about it but it really does a lot of heart. I feel like some people who made it understood the loony tunes and had some fun with it. The new one feels souless
Maybe that was the point; to show how much worse it actually could get.
I can't get over its called Space Jam. They went to space, they had a jam. How concise and hilarious
Adam specifically talking about how bad Lola's new design is made me feel so validated
@404 TV
It's all trash.
@Puss in Boots try googling the word feminism. or empathy. if that doesn't work, bang your head against a wall. hope this helps
Yes, but he admitted to not liking tits, and that makes me sad. 😞
My friends and i felt really off when they were talking and my friend said “it looks out of sync” and we couldn’t unsee it
Slight correction (which only strengthens the point a bit more, really) - the OG Space Jam's soundtrack peaked at #5 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. it peaked at *#2* on the Billboard 200. Pretty remarkable really. It's also worth noting that the album charted highly and was certified Gold or Platinum in multiple countries too.
It's so cute listening to Adam passionately argue for Space Jam.
people do legit shit on mj's acting and while meh its to be expected when he is playing himself and he has to interact with nothing...just saying...i actually liked his subdued acting
@@razkable he’s why I will never say a word against Alex Karras or O.J. Simpson as actors as long as I live.
That original poster is a masterpiece though. Seriously, at age 8 or whatever, when I saw that I got more hyped then Marvel fanboys were with End Game
The poster’s also really good. It’s super minimal. Just one side of Bugs and Jordan. Tells you all you need to know
All of the posters look impressive.
I thought the ideas presented (animation-wise) were pretty interesting and they manage to put in tension through other means, like starting out with the looney tunes loosing hard until they let go of sticking to basketball rules, and having the thing with the algorithm hacking the game.
maybe it’s not as tense compared to the original, though, I don’t really remember(if you do, it would be cool if you could remind me on how they did it)
I didn’t like the CGI but imagined it as the algorithm appealing to being more “modern” with CGI’s popularity, and that made me feel better.
and I liked how the son switches sides so the narrative avoids the son being villainozed by society after the story’s over.
~~~
however, the visual gags didn’t feel very unique a lot of the time, and the story isn’t particularly amazing. but personally, I didn’t find the original spacejam’s story memorable either(I watched it for the first time a year ago). soundtrack was super good, though.
The reason why the original movie was called Space Jam was because the aliens came from space and it involved the NBA Jam. A New Legacy had NO NBA Jam and it was all in a video game. Seriously these movie studios need to fuck off with the video game bullshit, it’s really starting to piss people off.
In the first Space Jam, Lola Bunny was THE ONE addressing the sexualization of the character! Yes, she was sexualized, yes, she owned it, and yes, she didn't want to be judged SOLELY by it! More mature than just making her a Bugs Bunny 2 with a butt shot XD
This is now my all time favorite YMS review
Wait until Lion King YMS.
Given that the 2D animation team was not credited in the film, only in a Twitter post by Warner weeks after the film's release due to backlash, I doubt they were treated well during production.
Stay classy
Forgot to mention that LeBron James also has got to be one of the least charismatic people to ever grace a film screen. Such a dud.
Just like on the court
Wasn't Lebron James the asshole who doxxed a police officer who saved a girl from being stabbed to death? Real good role model for the kids right there.
6:33 unfortunately a lot a animated movies of the 90s are still better than some recent ones because now even with better technology, the producers want to invest always less money in the project
I love how passionately angry Adam was in this review.
He filled the vacuum of passion that the movie's team left behind.
Made even better by the fact that he doesn't even like the original Space Jam that much. I love Adum.
The argument "the first one was bad so it doesn't matter" makes no sense to me. If anything, that means the new one should try to be better, and it's really disappointing that it's not.
Is it just me or is this unironically one of YMS's funniest videos
The "SPACE AND JAM" part is too good
It is. The dumb knock knock joke killed me
MEMBER BIG CHUNGUS!
7:06 That's a perfectly sound theory when I remembered, and just looked it up to confirm, that Zendaya wasn't even cast as Lola Bunny until April 3, AFTER the trailer released! Even I was thinking "Don't the animation departments need to first "sketch out" according to the voice actors' performances before they even commit to a final take?" I can never affiliate Zendaya voice to any Lola design, and she comes off like a terrible anime dub.
I can't even fathom why they made that choice, I bet it was solely because Zendaya's a big name right now. But yeah, it was real nice of them to bring back Kath Soucie only to dub over her because her name isn't goddamn marketable enough.
And actually, usually the storyboards and sometimes light animatic work comes first, then voice acting, then the actual animation, so that the actors have a general idea of what the scene they're acting out is going to look like and the animators have something to actually animate the mouths to.
I have quite some programming knowledge, and I can tell you that performing a common move that causes a game to crash and delete a character is some next-level shoddy programming. You would almost have to do it on purpose to make sure that can happen.
and isn't the kid portrayed as some kind of game developer prodigy, considering the level of complexity and polish he can put into the game at that age? imagine writing a plot device so incredibly obvious
Like why not write a complex glitch into the movie script and make it a plot point, where LeBron struggles to remember it, or he shows he knew it all along and didn’t want to hurt his kid’s self-esteem by winning right away?
I don't know about gaming, but with Mongo and SQL databases, you have to explicitly request a "delete" command to delete an object. It won't work unless your syntax is perfect, so yes, you cannot do that on accident.
@@blaisetelfer8499 Welllllll yeah but databases are extremely different from game memory.
Do you think the producers and writers even know what coding is?
I need a new text tone...
Adum: "MEMBER BIG CHUNGUS!?!?"
That'll do.
Space Jam is like a corporate idea that the filmmakers actually took seriously and put heart into (that soundtrack had no right being as good as it is). Space Jam 2 is taking the same idea and just actually making another corporate cash grab.
Fun fact, the original movie was literally an ad for an ad. It was inspired by Nike commercials featuring Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny.
And it's still a better movie than this pile of trash.
Just like THE LEGO MOVIE, but MAN that the movie SLAPS HARD
Every time a character called him King James I wanted to say to the movie's marketing team, "Stop trying to make "fetch" a thing!"
7:56
"What happend"
Simple, most of the budget went to salaries for the cast, director, producers and a lot of people that didn't do any actual work on the movie. It didn't go to the production of the actual movie because "It doesn't matter. People will see it anyway." and on top of that you can just say "It's for kids" that in the mind of the avarage person gives it carte blanche to do whatever.
I wouldn't be surprised if the actual animation staff just got the basic budget of a standard 20 minute cartoon network episode.
Why is it considered acceptable to use children as meat shields to defend crap?
I really, *really* appreciate that this video immediately kicks off with mentioning the significance of the first film's soundtrack because it is, in fact, that good. 🎵🎧🎵
The fact that A New Legacy was so bad actually is relieving to me. I honestly believe it was made with an algorithm (the plot, ideas, and scenes, not the animation obviously) and the fact that using algorithms and generated formulas results in this uncanny disconnected mess means we can't rely on them to replace actual care and intent
Nah just means they haven't refined it enough yet. Matter of time, I'm afraid. But hey, if androids can dream of electric sheep, they can surely write good fiction as well.
Sure. They can't replicate that stuff. For now. It's a fool's position that what doesn't exist today won't exist in the future.
Yeah, no. If you actually know anything about AI in a creative context, it's obvious that they cannot and will not ever be able to apply an artist's hand to work because they can only perceive doing the given task as efficiently as possible with no taste or flair. Same reason AI-smoothed animation looks like garbage lol
Sorry to dunk on the doomers who replied, but the day will never come when AI can effectively replace creative minds.
@@pureevil9496 We were never going to do and see a lot of things throughout history. Keep thinking you actually have any kind of grasp of what is actually possible or not, lol.
@@pureevil9496 If you're referring to what I think you are, it's relevant that the technology used for interpolating frames in animation wasn't actually trained for that purpose. It was trained to interpolate frames for sports events and similar live action media, and it performs a lot better in that context.
Anyway your position that an artificial agent is only interested in doing something as efficiently as possible isn't quite right. With the modern model of a learning agent (or at least the one I'm familiar with and have worked with a little) you can train them to maximize any attribute of their performance as long as you have a matching evaluation function to give them feedback. (this may be a bit oversimplified but I'm trying not to get too deep into it)
I agree that these problems are basically impossible for our current models due to their inherent subjectivity and the lack of a tractable model of what is good or bad art, but I think you're being a bit close-minded about what AI is capable of and what could be possible in the future, even if it is a distant future.
THANK YOU for the line about Big Bang Theory. I'm from the town where the show's creator came up with the idea for the show. It was a place called Trade a Tape. The current owner told me about how he always had spite for nerd culture, and the show was a blatant way of making fun of nerdy people. Yet so many gullible people fell for it thinking he was laughing with them rather than at them.
It’s an ableist premise executed poorly. Plenty of shows manage to rise above morally/ethically questionable concepts with good acting and writing but this does not. It’s like everything wrong with *F(r)iends* but with more *Star Wars* and *Star Trek* references divided by everything wrong with the Stefan Urquelle era of *Family Matters.* Sheldon was just White Urkel.
