    In Pixar's defense, they never wanted to make sequals. Disney was the only party interested, and once they bought all of Pixar, they started churning out the sequals

    I hate when people say “you shouldn’t be caring. It’s a kids movie, it isn’t for you.” Just because a kid is gonna be watching it, doesn’t mean it should be half assed. Kids should still have the quality of writing and production that an adult show would have. It’s insulting to think that a child will just sit and watch anything you put in front of them. Yeah that is the truth for a while but they will start to get some common sense, especially nowadays where it’s easy to access anything online, making it twice as fast for a someone’s opinion to be changed.

    • @tamiK6
      @tamiK6 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      But you see the important thing is, that the movies are going to sell specifically when kids are of age. The companies depend on kid's, well, not so picky taste and parent's blindness. If anything I would blame the parents for giving their money away on mediocre films, since that's the true reason we are getting more and more of them

    About the pizza scene, they explain that they only sell one kind of pizza. Horrible business plan on the pizza place's part, but it was explained.

    • @YMS
      @YMS  9 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      Isaac Munger When? I remember the scene being identical to the clip they posted on TH-cam: th-cam.com/video/8W6rntBADUQ/w-d-xo.html
      I did mention the "plain cheese" part just in case they mentioned it somewhere, but I don't see where that would have happened. Do you remember them briefly mentioning it after or what?

    • @YMS
      @YMS  9 ปีที่แล้ว +152

      Isaac Munger Not worth watching again to confirm, but I'll take your word for it. There was quite a bit of obnoxious laughter following the punchline (particularly from someone sitting 2 seats away from me), so either that distracted me or the one line didn't stick with me. I made that point under the impression that it could've been mentioned somewhere, so no big deal and thanks for the minor correction. It's funny to imagine a place that wouldn't accommodate selling a slice of plain cheese.

    14:36 Cartoony character designs are actually one of the main reasons why I like Pixar. If you ask me it is much easier to create something realistic by ripping it off from real life, than creating a working caricature character design from scratch. I think it's important for a studio to have their own unique look and in my opinion Pixar does that pretty well.

After all the shenanigans are over, the girl gets a new mental "control center" that is much bigger and more complicated than the previous ones, and there is a big red button that says "Puberty." So, although they certainly couldn't indulge too directly because it's a kid's movie, seems the filmmakers realized the same inevitability you did.

Complaining that the themes are too similar is hilarious to me, because Adum would have 100% complained about a lack of thematic consistency if it hadn't tackled similar themes to 2. 3 intentionally builds on 2's themes by elaborating on and continuing the questions that 2 set up.

    Okay, you make some really valid points about it being formulaic and predictable -- however what really got me about this movie was that it really tries to understand how "emotional complexity" works. As a kid, of course your emotions are simple and you're mostly happy all the time; but part of growing up is learning how to cope with negative experiences and how to process the wide range of emotions that aren't simple at all. Having happy memories back home tinged with sadness IS a complex emotion and the movie allows it to be both joyful and sad. You said you laughed at the part where she cries in school, but what I find amazing about that is that it creates the first "sad" core memory she has -- that's a really negative and painful experience and she's going to remember it forever. I thought this movie was remarkably compassionate and emotionally intelligent in the way it frames sadness as something necessary to our emotional make-up, and how it frames joy as stepping back and allowing Riley to feel other emotions too. Part of growing up is not being happy all the time and learning to process your feelings. When sadness finally takes control and Riley let's herself feel sad I literally lost it in the theater -- it's so easy to feel pain and try to harden up and shut the feelings out, but sometimes you really just have to let yourself feel how much you're in pain.
    Like I said, you're absolutely right that it's predictable and not really innovative -- but I think it actually presents emotional complexity well, and it presents it in the context of growing up and learning.

      while it’s important to criticize childrens media and expect quality movies, it’s also important to remember that the concepts in them will have to be simplified in order for smaller children to better understand them. inside out is kinda shallow in its premise of exploring emotional complexity but i think a part of that is intentional in order for very little kids to fully grasp how simple emotions build with each other to make one’s that are harder to describe. i think when viewing this movie in a lens of what small children are able to grasp it handles its topic pretty well. i cried as a kid when i first watch this movie, rewatching as an adult i see how it’s a bit illogical, but overall it still works well

      @@cocothedino_2901 I feel like complicating it any further would lead to confusion, especially in a film for general audiences. NOTE: Not saying I agree with Ebert. Just explaining why I think people are using a certain argument commonly.
    I think most people are coming from the Roger Ebert school of critique when they say it's a kids film. Ebert had the idea that you should always rate/review things for the target audience or as the film is setting itself up to be. So when people say "it's a kids movie," they're taken aback (I suppose,) that you are looking at it along side every other film. I'm not saying your philosophy is incorrect if it's just to look at it as a movie. It just makes sense to me why people would commonly use that as a dispute. You could argue that there are better kids films, and you'd be (most likely,) right. I haven't seen this one, so for all I know it could be average (skipped spoilers.) The Ebert philosophy would probably not rate this kind of thing super highly simply because it examines it along side other films of a similar nature--such as what you did. Just explaining the mentality is all.

Kinda weird seeing you here as well. I guess my TH-cam circle is small lol...

    • @AnimeFlyz
      @AnimeFlyz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      GoatJesus Well the problem stems from people then assuming that it is the greatest movie ever made which it isn't. Since its a movie aimed towards children, most people aren't analyzing or focusing too hard while watching it in the theater which makes them miss any problems with the film. I mean look at Frozen. Its gotten so popular to the point that its obnoxious even though it is just the same old typical animated kids movie. If people would actually use their brain while watching, they would see how un-special it is. Nobody is saying that you cant like a kids movie, but trying to put it on the same level as great live action films is a little silly since the quality of writing are not even comparable. When someone is able to predict exactly whats going to happen in the rest of the movie just from the set up, that is not good writing. That just makes it seem lazy and not new. The worst thing is that normal people aren't the only ones loving this mediocre stuff, award shows are too. These movies are winning Grammy's for having the writing of 12 year olds.

It's impossible to really explain. I guess it's the same sort of thing as why some people hate the feel of peach fuzz, but some love it, y'know?

    It seems to me that actually this film appeals way more to teenagers and parents, those are the two demographics I have talked to that enjoy the film. And sadness tried to touch the core emotions because she feels compelled to- the whole point of the film is to explain that looking at memories in a sad light isnt necessarily bad and is actually what riley needed to process and get over the initial depression that comes with a drastic life change.
    The personality islands collapsing symbolise a common symptom of depression- a loss of interest in activities that you previously enjoyed. When you have depression often you can be easily distracted and "lose your train of thought" which is why the train collapsed.
    Riley throughout the film is suffering from depression, and the sudden need to mature and change in her new environment. Of course there is a pre determined path for story, since in most young people suffering from depression the line of events is the same in terms of emotion. Parents really react and understand the segment where Joy cries over all the memories that dont matter to Riley anymore (because they were from her time as a baby) is the exact same thing for parents watching their child grow up, changing into a new person and in some cases experiences severe dips in their mood along the way.

    • @SeriouslyNotNormal
      @SeriouslyNotNormal 9 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      its wrong to say the film isn't smart and would appeal more to young children because a lot of the subtle parts in the writing are really clever (especially from a scientific standpoint- such as demonstrating why and when we lose memories, and how the brain processes memories/thoughts of each day at night and how similar events appear in dreams). All the young children in the theatre didn't pick up on the message, tone, or even some of the jokes in the film. This film requires experience and in that way it is very niche.

    Old video, but at one point you mention Riley being unaware that her emotions are sentient, but I'm pretty sure they aren't, and are just personified emotions. They do things with little explanation because that's often how emotions are, especially for someone young and hormonal. When Sadness "touches the emotion ball" when Riley was previously happily introducing herself to her class, it's just a way to visualize Riley's thought process. She was initially happy to discuss her history before remembering that she's moved and isn't where those happy memories she was just relating to the class were, therefore, her remembering went from reminiscing to mourning, the happy memories become sad ones. Moving away from her home that she loved makes it harder for her to have joy be the predominant mood of hers since she is in an unfamiliar area she never wanted to be in, letting other emotions take over. They aren't literally fighting for dominance in her head, but her own slump allows more negative thoughts to front in the mind. I think you might've misinterpreted the movie a bit, which might've hampered your enjoyment, it is a little smarter than you let on. Although, I agree, it isn't that funny.

    I'm seeing the argument that Pixar's "animation" isn't as high quality as some other's a lot, but I feel like people confuse "Animation" with rendering and modeling. Like, you say you want more realism in the characters, and you want them less cartoony, but that isn't "Animation." That's a design choice. The animation, as in, how the characters move, in Inside Out, is actually quite superb, and some of the best seen from a CGI film. Mostly because they are starting to apply techniques that were commonly used in traditional animation, but widely ignored by CGI animation. The objective of animation is not, and should not be, 'realism". Realism is a stylistic choice that sometimes works well, but it isn't the goal. If it was, why even bother with animation in the first place? Just make Live Action film.

    • @bloodcottoncandy
      @bloodcottoncandy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Alot of people, like me, believe high quality animation to be no different than any other art form that can be mastered. It needs a narrative that can angle itself beautifuly when adapting to the plot. Which is different from *realism* alot of people claim is what we truly want. It's not. We just want quality story telling from a billion dollar industry. Which shouldn't be hard. There are 7 billion people in the world. Plenty of people to choose a good idea and director from.
      Realism = believable story. Not more realistic looking characters.

    • @DaRkLoRdZoRc

    As soon as I heard of the concept of this film, I thought of the concept album The Human Experiment by Ayreon. It's sort of a prog rock opera about a guy who goes into a coma and is guided by his personified emotions (each with a different singer) through an exploration of his memories to figure out what brought him to that point. It's a pretty kickass album, and I get the feeling this film's plot is actually (much) more shallow than that of the album haha.

That would've been a little more unique and clever in my opinion - where as she grows up she no longer lets her emotions take over her completely. I mean, it's fun to explore a big world like that, but it would've been real different if it really did stay at headquarters. Like a 12 Angry Men kind of setup…maybe that's too mature (mentally) for Pixar

    Aren't our emotions something beyond our control? Let's say I put a teacup in front of you. Can you fear that teacup at will? Or fall in love with it at will? Sure, you could _act_ like that towards it outwardly, but that's a different thing. Similarly, if I stab your father in front of you, can you decide to not be angry at me or to not be worried about your father? Of course you can make an effort to not let your emotions control how you behave outwardly, but if there's an annoying guy next to you telling bad jokes and you ignore him instead of smacking him, that doesn't mean you are controlling him.

    • @PinuyashaRPG
      @PinuyashaRPG 7 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      Crowley9 In the context of this, I think he means that controlling your emotions is not letting them allow you to freak out or overreact. It's not a matter of how you feel inside. It's not letting your emotions negatively influence your actions.
      To control actual emotions (how you feel inside) is possible, but it requires conditioning. It's also not something you can do on the spot. Soldiers can be trained to not panic or fear during life and death situations. Martial artists can be trained to remain calm during a fight to focus. The fact that humans react positively to money is a conditioned emotion. In nature, why would a normal animal get excited over paper?

    Inside Out does strike me as the most Pixar movie of all Pixar movies. Pixar steers away from villains, yet most of them have some sort of antagonist you could call a villain. Inside Out keeps the struggle internal. Riley is her own worst enemy. Stories like those are few and far between and I appreciate them where I can find them.

    Why is this movie so great?
    Oh, I know.
    The soundtrack.
    The soundtrack drives emotions. In this movie it is one of the core elements and sets the tone. It makes empty scenes feel like they have depth. That is what made you cry at the end scene. Not the end scene.

      The soundtrack was good, but the soundtrack was the soundtrack, not the movie. It may have the most emotional impact of any aspect of film, but that's because people often judge things based on feelings, and music is pure manifestation of emotion. A good soundtrack is important, but anyone that isn't simply mind controlled by sound won't be able excuse the rest of a film.

    I actually really agree with this. I did enjoy the movie when I saw it, but I assume it was due to the fact that at the time a friend of mine had died, and so I felt like I wasn't in control of my emotions. Had I not been confused about what I was feeling at the time, I probably would've gotten bored with it about halfway through. The story and characters all seem very recycled, like we've seen it before. A good movie for kids, to help them understand sadness, anger, and depression and why it's okay to feel that, but for anyone above 12 it's not a great piece of entertainment.

  • @rhomaioscomrade
    @rhomaioscomrade 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I agree with a lot of things in the review, but what makes Inside out work for me is that it has some pretty good symbolism and metaphors (at least as far as I'm concerned).
    I always treated the sequences of emotions changing quickly as the equivalent emotion swings a person would normally go through. For example, in the class scene where she introduces herself, she goes from excited about a lot of the things she remembers, but then is stricken by melancholy and sadness because she has subconsciously come to the realization she has lost those things.
    The subsequent scenes of sadness "fucking up" in a way that joy and sadness are quite literally gone could be seen as drawing a parallel with depression and every event after it as a rather simplistic take on the matter. Which is why she kind of loses motivation in playing hockey, loses her character traits etc.
    And for a kid's movie, it does in fact have a very unusual message that's actually useful which is not to try and repress our negative emotions/sadness. Many adults especially do this as they deal with life and this movie showcases it perfectly in the manner of no one really liking/paying attention to sadness even though she exists.
    Remember, Disney is the same company that changed the original somber message of the Little Mermaid into another dumb "everyone's happy" ending. Putting a movie out that literally endorses sadness as an equally valid emotion to joy is in fact quite new and interesting.
    But that's just my take on it.

  • @Divers1990
    @Divers1990 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I have approximately four plot holes right here, and solutions for how to fix them to make the movie a smarter movie with better motivations for the characters and better explanations for how what's going on in Riley's head matched up with what's going on in her life:
    1. In the part where the Personality Islands are crumbling in the order that they just so happen to be nearest them and walking to them (Goofball, Hockey, Friendship, Honesty, and Family), they could change them to not be positioned conveniently in that order, instead making the travel time from Long-Term to any one of those islands the same. Add in some dialogue where Joy prioritizes using Goofball Island first, because "if Sadness damages anything on that island, it won't harm Riley as much as a more important island." Joy doesn't want any of Riley's virtues to be damaged, but she figures that the risk of Riley becoming too sad to be a goofball (probably only temporary) at her new home and school is better than her being too sad for hockey, friendship, family.
    Joy could be written as a stubborn character that fails to realize "goofball" or hockey being a more trivial personal value than the other ones are precisely why they'd more likely crumble first and prevent them from getting back to HQ, and that Sadness wouldn't affect a stronger island just as Honesty or Family just by walking on it's surface if Riley doesn't have an IRL reason to be sad about that.
    2. They could make both the scenes where Riley suddenly forgets how to play hockey, as well as the plotline where the train of thought derails because of an Island falling over and knocking over the support structures of the rails a lot less convenient by making the fall of Hockey Island the one to derail Riley's train of thought.
    For example, playing hockey at the indoor rink could cause Riley to think about her past and worry about how to be able to talk about her life experience in front of new peers and people without embarrasing herself by suddenly crying, or about what stuff to avoid expressing in front of new people. She could be having these thoughts, especially hockey-related ones, while actually playing at the ice rink and it could cause her to do poorly. Not just her suddenly being a confused idiot who got hockey-amnesia.
    This would be expressed in the movie in the form of Joy yammering all these thoughts to herself while actually riding the train of thought, and Sadness could chime in sad thoughts. Joy would get annoyed with Sadness, which could result in the train suddenly speeding up or starting and stopping quickly, sending a shower of sparks from screeching rail tires, that could dance backwards along the rail and land on Hockey Island, igniting it. Then as Hockey Island collapses, a long hockey stick from Hockey Island falls on the train, symbolizing that Riley at the moment is too busy considering giving up hockey overall to continue her train of thought.
    3. The movie also coulda been funnier if they Anger or Disgust (probably Anger) actually woulda pointed out to Fear, the risk of corrupting the Joyful hockey memories when touching them. The film could then address this as that the other emotions are allowed to touch other memories without them changing color if the color change wouldn't make any sense IRL anyway. Nothing that was happening to Riley in that Hockey rink was giving Riley reason to be afraid of hockey in general, and especially not retroactively associate hockey memories from the past to be fearful. This scene, even tho it is a scene where none of the three emotions at HQ actually did anything to cause Riley to have a bad hockey experience that day, it could be a scene to demonstrate that letting other emotions touch memories not the same color as them is not so dangerous, and that she coulda sent the core memories up the tube anyway. They had more opportunities to demonstrate the character flaws of Joy, but didn't utilize them.
    As a result, a feature-length film centered on this subject matter handles the idea of a nuanced overly optimistic, stubbornly jubilant character notably worse than even some of the crappier Pinkie Pie episodes from My Little Pony.
    4. Duplicating all those imaginary boyfriends to make a giant ladder-thing to HQ is a cheap cop-out that takes away the risk of every single one of the personality islands as well as the train of thought being removed in the first place, because they end up making it to HQ with this weird method anyway. Also... I reckon that would totally have to somewhat affect Riley's psyche when it comes to boys.
    The movie doesn't explain what her plan was after making it to Minnesota. She certainly wasn't gonna live by herself in Minnesota; maybe she was either gonna knock on the door of maybe an aunt, uncle, or grandparent over there.
    Instead of using "imaginary boyfriends", Joy could then manifest the imagination of three or four adult family members in Minnesota being agreeable and standing atop each other, their combined height totaling enough to reach the HQ or at least the trampoline. There would be dialogue in which they somewhat realistically talk to Joy as if she is Riley, agreeing that her parents were in the wrong and that any one of them would help Joy and Sadness get to HQ/Minnesota/their place. They'd be designed to look like they could be related to Riley and would know her parents. Joy and Sadness would probably fit into their hands, maybe the size of a small child than can be lifted up at the most.
    The one at the bottom would politely pick Joy and Sadness up and pass them up to the next person, kindly assuring Joy that they'd let Riley crash at their place. They could even have funny donchaknow Minnesota accents that her parents don't have.
    For audience laughs, a grandma could be at the top and the audience might think that she would politely place Joy and Sadness back at HQ, but would then casually and un-elegantly throw them at the window like a dart, causing them to splat at the window.
    Before that scene happens, the emotions at HQ insert the Runaway Idea light bulb, implying that the emotions are connected and that this decision at HQ being made influenced Joy to make her family-member decision.

    I don't know if jumping from happiness at introducing oneself to sadness is necessarily unrealistic.
    I remember my first day of school in a new place and I was excited on the first day, interested in a place I've never seen before and the teachers, but once it actually sank in and I remembered the stress that school caused me once we got our first assignments and that I was yanked away from the place I used to live with less than a month's notice, I started crying silently in the middle of class.
    It hit me that I had to endure the stress of building new social connections all over again (as someone who was a pretty awkward and asocial autistic kid), and as someone who had poor concentration issues had to keep up with assignments and getting from one class to another which caused so much stress in my previous year that I had a psychotic episode. So, I don't know. Once that adrenaline wears off, once you're idle, sometimes it all just hits you.
