I've never seen a Quake match where the characters are locked in a staring contest while both players frantically press buttons to find the button mapped to fire.
When I was in high school I tried using the DDR pads for Smash (can't remember if it was melee or brawl), but it didn't really work, since the arrows only let you taunt. Granted, it seems kind of fitting that a DDR pad would make you taunt, but unfortunate from a weird-and-janky-but-fun-way-to-play perspective.

@@daltondarko2016 The answer is: I spent about half an hour trying to do an ollie and a 180 grab trick in Foundry, and it was borderline impossible to stick the landing as it's really hard to see the TV when you're crouching down to hit the O pad with your hand! Also my parents probably thought I was mad.

When I tested games in various departments at Nintendo, we had to make sure the games would work with all the peripherals. The steering wheels made for the N64 and GC were a weird but fun alternative play style at times. I also tested Kirby's Tilt 'n Tumble, and we would use the unreleased GBC player on the N64 to record bugs for developers. Holding and tilting the console to control the game was an unexpectedly fun experience.
The TH-cam demonitisation bots only look for swearing in the first few minutes of the video. It's a completely asinine system but you do what you have to.

I used to have one of those Ascii Grip controllers. After a wrist surgery, i was unable to use my right hand for a few months. Thanks to the Ascii grip, i was able to play through FInal Fantasy 7 while recovering.

This reminds me of when I used to play Soulcalibur for the Dreamcast with the Fishing Rod controller. Occasionally in matches with someone playing on the Keyboard. I always had a fascination with gimmicky controllers and what they might be like in other contexts. It's not quite a "Wrong Controller" thing, but the Sega Saturn game SCUD: Disposable Assassin had two different game modes, a platformer and a rail shooter. If you plugged in two light guns, it'd play just the rail shooter levels. Even in D-Pad mode you had to play some rail shooter segments. If you had one player on a D-Pad and player 2 on the light gun, you'd have both the platformer and rail shooter segments, except the guy with the gun could freeze enemies to help the platformer player. Well, it had One D-Pad, One Player One Gun, One Player Two Guns, Two Players Two Guns, and Two Players D-Pad+Gun... I got it in my head to play it One Player D-Pad + Gun... and it actually worked pretty well. I wish I had a copy and a CRT to capture it and show people.

@@guerillagrueplays6301 THPS games have jump charging and use that for acceleration as well, plus just pushing a board flip or board grab button by itself does nothing, so n00bs will naturally struggle quite a bit at first, especially if they're playing the first game without the manual.
Some of my best memories involve playing PS1/PS2 games with the DVD remote. It worked really well with a lot of RPG and puzzle games, but nothing else, really.

I have an ASCII Grip, and it's a surprisingly perfect controller for RPGs. Not surprised it failed, but it's a great little device for menu-driven games.
During Xmas in 99/00 or so me and my brother received some extra money as a gift and both bought conker and Pikachu for N64 for only 10$ each (wish I knew they would had been valuable in the later years, but at least we still own them in box) we also tried the voice command with every game we owned and I think it was star fox or turòk that let you shoot by screaming
Sometimes I use the pack from the xBox Guitar Hero drum kit to play Tekken because you don't need shoulder buttons, also not exactly the "Wrong" controller, but when the internet first came to the PS2 I played alot of Twisted Metal Black using I think a Fanatec Speedster steering wheel which I had used playing Need for Speed Underground cross platform PS2 and PC.

Yeah the SCUD game was the only game I can think of to let you dual wield light guns as one player. Also, the comic itself is amazing.

The pop'n controller announces its presence to games that care by holding down d-pad L+R+D. Hence the dizzy Arin in Quake II.
