So nobody is gonna talk about how almost all the c’s are k’s in the subtitles?
yeah
I think you missed the most important part about Ultimate Mortal Kombat DS
It included Puzzle Kombat
Ok no joke I've been wanting to make a video about Mortal Kombat's craziest minigames for years
@@StopSkeletonsFromFighting that game was sick, also really funny! I got it when i was 14 and had my DS lite
My parents tought pixelated blood and brutality was OK and... I agree, I'm not gonna rip some guy's spine out
Stop Skeletons From Fighting this is an excellent idea!!! With the right implementation I think that video would also be really entertaining as I thoroughly enjoyed most of their mini games (let’s not forget Kombat Racing)
@@StopSkeletonsFromFighting DO IT
@Most Deadest Pool of em All. I'd love an entire game about all the silly ass MK minigames. Then add some extra crap.
Panic Button definitely deserves a dedicated Punching Weight episode for their Switch porting prowress...

I was just about to say. I mean, I love playing Doom 2016 on my Switch sooooo much!
And they're also doing Doom Eternal for the switch too!
@@franciscoandrada412 I know!
i understand giving MK1 on gameboy grief but MKII on gameboy was pretty amazing it had excellent collision, framerate, speed, and sound. MKII was really really good.
Yep, agreed.
No, it was decent at best
@@mortenera2294 nah your wrong it was very good for is time and even for nwo
I totally agree mk2 on gb was amazing
Here in Santa Catarina, in the South of Brazil there was definitely a console war between the SNES and the Mega Drive. I had an SNES and my cousin had a Mega, we'd play at each other's houses and damn boi, was my childhood good because of it. Master System's dominance seems to be confined to the poorer regions of Brazil.
Pacheko here in santos sp in my neighborhoods shit were crazy too. I had a genesis (my father was a gamer and used to pay a lot in gaming to play with me) and my next door neighbor had a snes, but other neighbors had master systems and famiclones too, like the polystation and dinavision
probably because Sega handed the manufacturing rights to a Brazilian company called TecToy.
8:43 woah there buddy don't you dare diss my boy Cheetahmen
just because it was a failed expirement doesn't mean it doesn't have value
I know, right? the cheetahmen theme is unironically a fuckin bop
The music he put was better too
@@devastatheseeker9967 Exactly, game sucks but the music is legit great

You have yet to see WWE 2K18 on the Switch, it is an absolute dumpster fire
The worst game I have ever played. Absolutely unplayable.
A Nintendo Switch legend
I'm so glad someone else is talking about this. The switch port is essentially unplayable.
I pray that The Witcher 3 is playable on the Switch.
Was my first thought. Maybe he'll do a video if he can find enough content. Maybe wrestling handheld games?
Tec Toy was a big thing here in brazil, now it's not anymore.. sadly...
KAMUI PLAYS did Tec Toy brought the games and translated them or were they only in English? Did Brazil go bananas over the best Master System game ever (Phantasy Star)?
@@AlexRN Phantasy Star was very important in here, 'cause it was the first rpg game ever translated to brazilian portuguese. Not all games, but they translated a lot of them, and they also made brazilian versions, like Asterix and Obelix for the master system they used characters from a brazilian tv show called tv colosso, they also did something similar with some wonder boy games too, they released here using characters from Monica's Gang. They also translated pahntasy star 2 and 3.
I still think TecToy is amazing even today.
I know the ''2017 Mega Drive'' (this version: www.comunidademegadrive.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/1495752716284-640x400.jpg / www.tectoy.com.br/pre-venda-mega-drive-edicao-limitada/p/995040461825 )
doesn't use the original Mega Drive hardware even though it has the same casing, but it's still infinitely better than ATGames Sega Genesis.
In addition, I learned that fans named Neto and Rafael have created updates for this Mega Drive, improving game compatibility, sound quality and even adding the save option to SD and even more surprisingly the option to back up cartridges to the SD straight from the console.

With the new update, it is a great device for those who don't want to spend more on a Sega Genesis + Everdrive in Brazil.
@@AlexRN "Cloth Map" channel has a 3 part documentary of Brazilian gaming. He gos there and does a lot of investigating and interviews.
Pense Bem era demais.
Taxes here in Brazil really make me cry. I recently had to save money for months... to buy a 3ds 😭
Honest question, do they tax your mail? I mean is there anything that can stop you from paying someone $300ish USA dollars and mailing you a system? The good thing is the amount of ports of games the Master System, Game Gear, and Genesis / Mega Drive got in your country exclusively at times does amaze me in a good way!
@@danielthomas7193 they do.. they do tax mail too..
Wow that sucks. In the USA, I live in that state with the highest taxes (Illinois). But I guess it can be worse.
@@danielthomas7193 doubt it's worse then ny prices and taxes.
me too :
In terms of compromised ports, the 360 and PS3 ports of Shadow of Mordor are some of the most hilariously busted back-ports I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing, legitdidn't think it was real the first time I saw it but, it super is, and it's super glorious. Highly recommended.
Awesome video as always by the way.
Oh man I remember it was so bad.
Literally a ten second load every time you enter a menu, like when you idk, *mark a target*. Not to mention the nemesis system was neutered.
Reminds me of Ghost Recon when it launched on 360 and original Xbox. The back port was absolute garbage
11:46 Imagine you're a father with low knowledge of technology and has a son that wants a videogame and you see a cheap Master System with bundled games and a over 300 bucks Mega Drive with no game included on a store, what would you choose?
lol cheers from the land of coffee and Carnaval
Sam o.0 what about localization? Did you guys get the games in Portuguese or only in English? Does Brazil have a burgeoning Phantasy Star fandom fue to the spectacular 1st game on that console?
Yeah, that bit of the interview made Brazilian consumers sound like idiots who couldn't tell the difference between a 8 and 16 bit machine. While in reality it was the way parents thought, (who couldn't care less if Mega Drive was a stronger console) and choose the less expensive one for their kids, specially in a period the country was just recovering from a massive inflation crisis in the 80's and early 90's.
Even crazier than the MK3 port to Master System, was Tectoy's own Street Fighter 2 version, which was actually a downport of the Mega Drive game. And finally Duke Nukem 3D for Mega Drive, which only God knows how they pulled off.
@@zeigman
Tec Toy deserves a whole Punching Weight episode
E algo me diz que vc fala português também hashushahusa
@@CosmoKo_ I've always been interested in Tec Toy's and Sega's relationship, would love see a retrospective on that. Sega was my childhood in the late 80's to mid-90's here in the UK, and I was a fanboy (but then again we were all fan boys at 10 years old weren't we!), but it is nice to see an area where Sega never really died and where Alex Kidd is still eating Rice balls and punching bulls!
at the airport, a ton of people tried sneaking them back into south america [game systems like ps4 and xbox]
yeah that switch port does look terrible, but you havent seen SHIT until you cover the borderlands 2 port on the vita. i dont have to request this because i know youll eventually do it because of how ambitious yet terrible it is...sadly since im a hopeless vita and borderlands fanboy i actually played it and the glorious 10 fps and screentearing is something to behold. and that was before the hacking scene was able to overclock the vita
Wow I forgot about that port. Which is quite an accomplishment since the White Slim model was bundled with it.
Yeah the PSVita port of MK9 looks pretty bad but at least runs well, BL2 on the other hand looks as bad as it runs
Wait that's a thing? How have SSFF not covered it before? That sounds hilarious.
Yeah overclocking the Vita really changes the game.
You take something that runs pretty choppy to something that runs consistently at a good frame rate.
Its not as bad as it used to
As a Brazilian, I loved that little tangent about Tectoy! Love your videos!
Would it be to much to ask for a Punching Weight episode on Tectoy games?
Brazil's tectoy master system is honestly amazing
@@johncenaplayingstarcraft9580 and their mega drive is also really good.
YES PLEASE
Tectoy is a great subject
I only found one flaw in the MK1 port to the Sega Gamegear. If you used Johnny cages’ ball-buster split punch on Shang Tsung, it would crash the whole system, and you would have to restart the console.
Hey now, MK2 on Gameboy was actually really competent despite content cutbacks. It wasn't amazing, but the game at least moved quickly and looked decent.
Also, PLEASE do a switch/panic button video.
Gotta say that card game commercial at the beginning got me intrigued
That part with Sega's dominance in Brasil reminded me of my cousins who didn't know about the SNES and N64 until around 2004 (if only you could have seen the wonder in their eyes while I described the N64 controller) because the only consoles you could find where they lived were from Sega and some NES clones, while the only consoles I knew as a kid where from Nintendo. Back then I only knew Sonic from the cartoon, I had no idea he had games, and so many to boot! Likewise they didn't know about Zelda at all. I also missed the PS1 completely, but I played the Gamecube and Xbox, which they missed. It was fascinating sharing our completely different experiences with video games during the annual family reunions.
Wow, thanks for the heart guys!
To be fair to the Switch port of MK11, the overall stability of the game has improved immensely with the latest patch...
"MK4 takes the Gold." Something was done there, by you, and it was seen, by me.
"it plays more games than you idiots have braincells"

Marketing 101: Insult your buyers' intelligence. They love that shit.
I like how the subtitles replace all the c by k, nice touch.
Greetings from Brazil! My first Video Game was a Master System... in 2005.
Ah, dude, MK2 on GB was pretty good
It's easily the best of the three GB Mortal Kombat titles.
@Sad Hitler I agree Mr sad hitler
Well, it was bad... but there was NO good fighting game on Game Boy, and it was the best of the worst. Definitely not worth lumping in with MK1 which was just a disaster, but while MK2 was impressive for the system it was on, I still don't get the love for that port.
By the way, the Master System Mortal Kombat 3 version can easily be found for around 30 to 50 USD here in Brazil, if someone is interested.
In Brazil, a legit copy of MK3 for the MasterSystem is sold for 5 dollars on-line. You should import it
João Pedro S. crazy how our contry have some pretty cheap products to them and very expensive of them for us (ps4000)
I’m dying at all these “k”s in the subtitles. Like I don’t even usually have subtitles on and I’m treated to this. Amazing.
See this is why I love this channel. I'd have written all of these games off as garbage, but you guys actually dig into the contexts and make a positive experience out of it all. You look at a port that lacks and appreciate what's present. Hell yeah.
I owned all the Gameboy ports of Mortal Kombat games as a kid and let me tell you they weren't all bad.
MK2 played suprisingly well and was the smoothest game out of all of them.
Its the only one of the games that was developed by the same team
Same here 😁😁
"You can't do this! You have to port these games to systems that can handle them! This is futility!"
"Wrong, Jarek! This is not a futility! This is a fatality!"
nintendo still cant hold up to sega around these parts, we have the nintendo of brazil and still, most of the games go for about 80-100USD when ps4 and xbox one titles average 50-60USD, no wonder people around these parts usually dont have very fond memories about nintendo, most people with Snes usually were the "rich cousins"
Uh, Nintendo hasn't officially had support here in Brazil since 2011 or '12, I think? Yeah, they have a "Brazilian store" for some Switch digital games, but all that amounts to is the store being in Portuguese and the prices being in Reais, but that's it.
Oh, and actually the Snes eventually did beat (or at the very least got really close to) the Mega Drive. Nintendo's partnership with Gradiente wasn't as big as Sega's was with Tectoy, but they did pretty well over here , while that partnership lasted.
@@rodrigodavet7512 oh, i learned something new today
rodrigo davet crazy to know how our gaming history was so different in the beginning compared to other countrys, and then, as time went by, things got similar in some ways (despite ps4000
Considering "Nintendo Tax" is a term used globally, yeah I think it's safe to say for Brazil it's gonna be Sony and Microsoft for a loooong time. Us in the UK don't like Nintendo much either - it was the microcomputers, the Mega Drive, and then the PS1.
I appreciate the subtitles having all the c replaced with k.
I had Mortal Kombat 2 on GameBoy as a kid, man I loved that game and is quite good for a Gameboy mortal kombat
As a Brazilian, I can say that both PS3 and PS4 got here costing around R$ 8000 (around USD 2000 for simplicity sake), but that was part greed of the importing companies because of the "novelty effect". Later on, those systems went down to around USD 700 (yet pretty expensive comparing to USA and JP prices)
But we gotta be honest and thank Sony for doing some kind of black magic and releasing their first party games at a (comparatively) cheaper price, even with all the taxes. They are technically cheaper than in the US!
Dude, just do a whole video on the work of Panic Button, as all of their Switch ports are amazing.
i hope whoever did the subtitles is having a good day today
I believe this is the best video you have ever done, and I am always happy to see you enthusiastic about the history of these games. It's always amazing learning about ports that I didn't know exist, because I think my knowledge is pretty top tier lol
good work !!!
Derek, as a Brazilian, allow me to say this: Your research is easily the best I've ever seen from someone from outside. I mean, you mentioned TecToy, their partnership with Sega, the fact they still make Master Systems to this date, that today's ones aren't exactly original hardware, and even mentioned the famous PS4K!!! (we gave it that name because back then, 1800 USD were 4000 BRL).
As a comparison, 1800 USD today is almost 7000 USD, and a PS4 now costs approximately 1400 BRL, roughly 360 USD.
But the reason for that excruciatingly high price is not only that our import taxes are ridiculous, but also because back then, videogames were taxed as Casino Games. Now, they're taxed as Electronics and Software, so their price would be lower, had our economy remained stable. Which it obviously didn't.
Also, I just checked it, there was a Law created in 1984 (dropped in 1992) that made it almost impossible to import computers, and that probably includes consoles as well, they had to be produced here. So TecToy partnered with Sega to release the Master System and a company called Gradiente was only able to bring Nintendo Products reliably once the SNES was released. We don't even have lots of NES's here, pretty much all of them are FamiClones. So that kinda explains how the Master System was able to dominate. And I am a Sega boy mostly because of TecToy.
We also don't have ANY classic computers like Commodore's or Apple's from earlier than that. All PCs were either IBM PC Compatibles or MSX manufactured by a regional variant of Sharp that had almost no relation to the actual Japanese Sharp.
Sure, you can find a few people with NES, or Commodore 64, but they probably had to "smuggle it" via an unofficial importer (we call them "Muambeiros", as the imports themselves are ""Muambas"), or via a travelling relative.
I just noticed something. Any time a word that isnt a proper noun has a "c" in it, the subtitles replaces it with a "k".
Nike.
I was searching to see if anyone else noticed that. Nice touch.
When he says "Codzz" it's my favorite thing!
Yes. They did it!
Edit: Also yes please more switch games on the channel that would be awesome!
The dedication to replacing all the "C"s with "K"s in the caption is admirable as hell
I like mk2 for the gameboy. I know its not a great port, but its can be fun.
jesus THAT ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT GAG *DESTROYED* ME
definitely need to cover the switch ports i would love to learn about the differences from yall.
i love how the subtitles for this video every C word is replaced with a K the fact that you guys went the extra mile for that is awesome!
MKII on GB is tolerable, and it probably represents the max you can achieve on the GB.
Agreed, idk why he said it was bad, cos MK1 and MK3 and MK4 are much much worse.
God I hate that I recognize Cheetaman music instantly now. Thanks to AVGN
The subtitles ! I kan't !
loved that tangent about Tectoy, I think it deserves an entire video about it :P
What’s with this dude always ripping on Turok.
Heyyy! Thanks for talking about Brazil's videogame market way more in depth than most people do! Video was great, as always
I love all of the "k" words in the kaptions. It's great and fits what Mortal Kombat does.
8:50 Has anyone ever converted that lead synth? It's the ONLY good synth sound in that game. The rest are funny farting noises, but I like that sound.
The Tiger Barcodzz version even has fatalities! It's kind of amazing.
Haven't you seen Ark: Survival Evolved on the Switch?
I have a PS4 and gaming PC yet decided to get MK11 on the Switch. This was because I wanted to take it with me everywhere. I brought it to school a lot to play with friends. While the offline is limited, it’s really not that bad.
Switch is a land of promise for ambitious ports. Btw. Did you know that BFG is called "Big [Censored] Gun" in the Switch version of Doom 2016? Now you know. You are welcome.
I thought everyone knew it stood for big fucking gun.
Always has
Of course, everyone knows this, but it is funny, how Nintendo explicitly censored the name of the gun in the game’s interface. When you switch to it, it literally says: "Big [Censored] Gun"
@@CZpersi haha, I thought you were censoring yourself.
i do have to say i love the captions, every C is replaced with a K except names.

RE: Revelations 2 for the vita is as ambitious as is unnecessary. It runs and looks like crap but I love it.
I bought it just so I can I say I own it on Vita lol
As a brazillian, I'm pretty surprised you not only gave the explanation for the game existing here, but also gave the correct explanation, and even mentioned the stupid taxes and stuff. I've never seen a single youtuber explain so correctly about the shitstorm that is the taxes around here. Thanks for actually caring about the correct information and sharing it.
7:36 Wait a second, a computer mouse... on a Gameboy Color? Wait... are you using an EMULATOR?!?! I'm calling Miyamoto right now and telling on you!
I like how all the hard C's in the closed captions have been replaced with K's
Derek, I am from the future! Mortal Kombat 1.. it's apocalyptically bad
But MK11 on Switch was already bad, I was shocked everyone was so surprised that MK1 looked that bad
@@StopSkeletonsFromFighting Very True but the MK1 port has a magical type of bad to it where it comes off as a PS2 trying to run a modern PC game and Nintendo charged next gen pricing! 😀
I love that the letter C was replaced with K when applikable. It's beautiful, great work Unkle Derek and yay Producer Grace!
Please, pretty please, do a Deep Dive on the Master System in Brazil!
1:29 so I’ve randomly got subtitles on, and the fact you replace the letter C with the letter K throughout the video is such a Punching Weight thing to do.
Ain't the first
Ain't the last
Saw this video
Had a blast
I legit started liking that baseline the more you played it.
I’d like to see more Switch games. I love that you guys cover a lot of obscure stuff for older consoles but I think just a tad more variety would be nice since most of your recent output has been from the Gameboy or Nintendo 64. Again not that I don’t appreciate learning about those, just that I’d like a bit of a wider scope for the show.
Me: (On my way to do some research on TH-cam)
SSFF: "How about a 17 minute video studying ports of one your MOST loved titles to study ports of?"
Nobody asked, but "Another World" has some huge differences port-to-port. Music, stages, even background art. DOOM is another (but you've covered this). "Prince of Persia" was always impressive no matter what system it showed up on, but I think the Sega CD edition may have been the most feature-filled. Adaptations + Regional Differences make "Carmageddon" also fun to explore.
The SNES had a few titles with "Full Motion Video" - Rise of the Robots, Revolution X, Brett Hull Hockey, NBA JAM (Original Only, no Subsequent Editions), others. Considering the CPU speed, Memory, and CARTRIDGE BASED STORAGE of the era... it was a nice flex in the 16-bit era.
I actually really enjoy MKII for GB, I got it recently for 5$ and it's a really competent, playable port
same! hahah
I downloaded MK11 during this year's E3 sale on the eShop and I'm pleased to say they fixed most of the issues.

As a kid, for whatever reason, I asked for the Game Boy port of Mortal Kombat 2 for Christmas. Curiousity got the best of me. I'm not a smart person, and I definitely wasn't a smart kid...
Punching weight is my favorite show on this channel! keep making them. I suggest you to continue with the brazil weird games topic... there's a lot of stelar material right there.
Also, please bring back regular game reviews, i really like your perspective, i recently binged all HVGN videos.
As much as I like the 'new' direction, HVGN > SSFF
@@stephenobrien6983 i tend to agree with you. Hvgn has some really good reviews of obscure games. I've even played some of them because of his recomendation. But on the other hand... The site is flooded with video reviews, retro or otherwise. And a show like punching weight, based on the oddities of the gaming industry, its just a lot less common. Thats why i just want him to bring regular reviews back, and not fully return to only making reviews
@@diegog1853 Yeah, it makes sense that they'd try to diversify their content. I liked the retro reviews too. I was put onto a lot of good games thanks to that series. I especially loved the episode where he covered the Gargoyle's Quest trilogy. Those games are pretty underrated.
@@stephenobrien6983 yup that was really good and i did play them because of them. I also really liked when he covered the rocket knight adventures series ans the parasite eve trilogy. I'm actually currently playing through the second one because the first was reaally good and a really good recomendation from the hvgn
@@diegog1853 Yeah man, those reviews were pretty good. It's how I found out about 3rd birthday. It would be cool if Derek revived the brand. He doesn't need to take away anything to suit the changes in the channel but just incorporate them. Grace could be the Happy Video Game Girl alongside the Happy Video Game Nerd, reviewing old classics on the couch. There's a certain endearment to listening to a dude (or dudette) that sounds like they're just talking games in your front room. Maybe grace could drink white wine since the happy nerd always drinks red? Also, Derek needs to brink back Starship Amazing. That music was great. Wish I could have got in on that physical cd a while back. A lot of their tunes are pure gold. Great retrosynth.
About the Master System... That's kinda inaccurate. MS was somewhat popular but the Megadrive and even the SNES were more popular given just a bit of time. Tectoy was and still is a bunch of cheapos.
The Megadrive was really popular and the SNES was easily found anywhere, mostly being imported from Paraguay instead.
And the way things got circumvented here was through piracy. A bunch of people had Famiclones officially sold like the Phantom and the Dinavision and they didn't even knew. And after that only consoles with the easiest way to pirate games got popular (PS1, PS2, 360).
I think the main purpose of the Switch port (well not "main," but a big one) is for competitive players to be able to grind on the go, so things like the crypt running poorly, needing to be online for a lot of content, and the visuals in general aren't all that important when you just want to be able to practice confirms and combos on a plane or whatever.
Of course, I *DO* understand that a huge portion of people that buy/play Mortal Kombat are more casual fans, and of course this stuff will matter for them.
Full disclosure: i kinda like the CheetahMen music. I enjoy it the same way i enjoy bad movies.
I really respect you pronouncing it "Bar-cods"
Because that is how i would say it.
And it can instantly transition into a codpiece joke, which is funny.
Barcodzzpiece to protect your junk.
Zing!
I really liked the Deadly Alliance duology on the Game Boy Advance. The Mortal Kombat Vita port wasn’t too shabby, either.
That Cheetahman theme is a banger though.
That feel when HVGN puts the Switch into the same category as the Gameboy and PSP.
