We wanted to add a short review section of Bloodstained into this video but the timing just didn't match up. But since finishing and releasing this video, we've had a chance to really sink our teeth into the game and we think Bloodstained is great! Still can't yet say something like "Better than Symphony of the Night" but it's definitely holding its own with other Metroidvania titles that are out right now and as far as Kickstarter games goes, Iga delivered on this one!

I just wanted another Symphony of the Night era Castlevania game and that's what I got. I also backed Mighty No. 9 and didn't even finish one level because of how bad it was. Everyone is kinda forgetting one of the few incredibly successful Kickstarter retro revivals that actually ended well: A Hat in Time. It was set to be an early 3D Platformer revival, much similar to something like Yooka-Laylee, but it wasn't based on any single idea or concept from that time frame, different to Yooka-Laylee which tried being a modern Banjo-Kazooie. A Hat in Time tried being similar to those original 3D Platformers while adding it's own completely new concepts, like the hat switching mechanic or the large variety of characters. It had a very lofty goal and fulfilled it, even going beyond the Kickstarter by porting it to the Switch, something that Gears for Breakfast, the developers, had once said was impossible. The two DLC's released for the game were incredible, each one having a completely new world and an extra mode tacked on. The first DLC, Seal the Deal, had a fairly short new world, but also introduced the Death Wish mode which remixes pretty much all the levels in the game and makes them extremely more difficult, while giving a promise of new cosmetics if you're up to scuff to finish the mode in it's entirety. The second DLC, the Nyakuza Metro, had a vast new open world chapter along with featuring online multiplayer where you could do anything in the game with up to 50 people all at once with the Online Party mode. Disappointingly, the Online Party mode is unavailable in the Switch port and they're still working towards porting the DLC to Xbox One and PS4, but it is still an incredible game despite which platform you use. The game recently had it's 3rd anniversary since release, so now's as good a time as ever to jump in. Heck, Gears for Breakfast have been putting out some open job applications recently so it looks like we might possibly be getting more of A Hat in Time in the distant future.

It's easy to say you want to do something and you can be as creative and have a team of highly-trained specialists but the reason you need a company could literally be at your back is to make you make the best game possible within a realistic time frame and budget which is something Kickstarter as you saying the video is a problem for because of stretch goals and unrealistic and unchecked expectations. I've played the toybox demo too, and... yeah, you're right. Controls were super clunky and slow there (and for the PS4, it chugged like hell). But, the full game was a different beast entirely, being much smoother to control, much more accurate, and the gameplay moved at a decent pace while running at a solid framerate.
Ok, yeah, the full game had a few issues (some camera problems, some of the transformation minigames were annoying, and one stage feels kinda... meh), but I thought it was quite the well done revival of the Banjo style platformer. They at least patched the camera so it had a completely different way to control it which fixed some of the stickiness of the original camera, and they've improved on the transformation minigames. I doubt it's a terribly expensive game these days, so I could probably recommend picking it up to check it out now.

Then, having to collect those last few pagies to get to the final boss made me release how empty the world really is. It's still a good game, but it definitely needed a bit more polish to really live up to its legacy.

With regard to the poll about DLC you completely left out the fact that it was not a backer poll. It was done one the bloodstained discord and was completely open to the public. Also many of the decisions that were made based upon “backer feedback” were only made based off of PC backers, as they did not offer demos/betas on any other platforms claiming it could not be done, to which it was pointed out to them that The skullgirls team did it with their follow up, Indivisible. A lot of the things that rubbed salt deeper into backer wounds was how disingenuous and sometimes dishonest the publisher was to backers. Question505/Angel Corlux, the 505 studios representative who dealt with the Kickstarter community rarely had anything to respond with corporate double speak answers and ridiculous “value charts” to justify things like why backers paid more than retail buyers and were getting less. His claim that the backer exclusive sleeve was worth $10 was absurd when it likely cost pennies to produce. Also the fact that retail was offered the steel case but backers were told they could try to buy one of only 800 available to 64000 backers was upsetting to say the least

I finally finished the main campaign last night, and I gotta say, this game went above and beyond. If anything, it's so overloaded with content and things to do that you almost can't wrap your head around it at first. First half of your first playthrough is just discovery, seeing what Easter eggs they included for long-time "Castlevania" fans, messing around with weird shit you can do like playing the piano or changing your haircut.
But then we get to the final boss, and I gotta say, it's one of the best IGA has ever made. Frenetic, challenging, yeah potions and fairie elixir help, but this is all down to your skill. It made for such a rewarding experience.

I feel like stretch goals for kickstarters should be more intertwine with the actual product. And is realistic to the type of game you are making.
    co-op
have a character named after you
    Beta-Acess / early build access .
    post production content
having bunch of physical doo dadz just makes things a mess. I know a friend who backed the merch stretch goal for Yooka and got the wrong bloody size. And thats just a for a shirt.

@@landoncore92 It has that constant rewarding like Aria does and then some because of the crafting elements.
So even if you get repeat shards (souls), they'll either boost that soul's power or you can sell them.
The weapons and items are what really boosts the fun of this game!
There are many awesome tricky ones with unique properties and special moves.
I am a bit OP early on, but with the additional difficulties, and abilities, I'm predicting you can really change up the gameplay on replays. With magic only builds, gun focused builds, et cetera.

being an exclusively pc gamer, i didnt know the ending as the story unfold and any similarities to mighty no 9 made this whole thing sound like a disaster waiting to happen. Especially when they had 4 different developers.
Awesome work Igarashi! Totally heroic effort to make his dreams come true and im so happy for him after all the shit he went through.

Bloodstained has been killing it ever since launch, and managed to do what no one expected.... bring the same style of gameplay that we all loved from the Castlevania series, while injecting its own personality into it to stand truly apart from the game it was inspired by.
Naturally, you're going to find a lot of the same beats as with other Kickstarter projects, but Koji Igarashi and his team definitely deserve all the praise for steering a project that could have easily been a dumpsterfire into a well-oiled, well-disciplined, powerhouse of a game that fans and newcomers absolutely love!

I had faith my dark lord would triumph where the other heathens would fail, and playing through the game right now I can see my faith has been well rewarded.
Seriously though I was fairly confident Bloodstained would be good, because Igarashi has always been more down to earth. The guy legitimately cares about this genre, and getting it right. The guy talks like a craftsman and a developer, rather than a marketer or businessman. I actually somewhat disagree with the notion that it's story resembled Might no 9's, because ever since the Bloodstained campaign began it's all been about the game, and about improving it, whereas Inafune was going to Anime Expo pushing an animated series, a sequel, and just an entire franchise before people had even had a chance to judge the first game. The warning flags were just everywhere right off the bat.
Bloodstained by comparison handled its backing with relative humility, added realistic incentives and goals, and kept people up to date with both the progress, and setbacks of the games' progress. It was a passion project and has never tried to make itself seem like anything but that.

There's a learning curve for crowdfunded games. Most of these game developers are not publishers, accountants, businessmen... A LOT of different skills are required to make a game. I think most realized that once they set out in the open to try and make their own games. A pile of money and a great concept just isn't enough to get a good product out. I think these will get better over time, like we're starting to see.

Backers issue with the Iga's backpack DLC isn't that other people have the option to buy it, it's that we were pressured into buying during KS by fear of missing out. That in itself is annoying, but forgivable, as at least I support it being available to everybody.
But the important part is that of the pricing. Buying the game on release and buying the DLCis a better deal in every way financially, when compared to backing.
That's the part that has pissed many people off.

Backer for both Mighty No 9 and Bloodstained, and I'm fairly certain team Iga learned from Mighty No 9's mistakes. Proper communication with backers and didn't treat them like dirt, a healthy community that they actually listened to, and most importantly a quality game. Just so happy that the project ran so smoothly and the final product turned out so well.
