    A really really REALLY awesome Easter egg with HD Rumble is in Kirby Star Allies.
    Once you have beaten the game and unlocked the final FINAL level.
    When you reach the end of the level and initiate a certain sequence (you know) you can actually listen to the Joycons and it will play the Kirby theme, and it's really damn cool! I had goosebumps the whole level and only to realize my Joycons were emitting a small tune, I had to replay the level to truly listen to it and it seriously made me cry from nostalgia.

    Fun fact about the Gameboy Player logo: the software on the GameCube actually uses this screen to detect if it needs to poll the game to communicate GameCube controller support - and the polling is pretty much the GameCube pressing a load of buttons super rapidly (including impossible buttons like Left+Right at the same time)

    • @FluXuaL88

      @@FluXuaL88 emulators that detect Gameboy Player do exactly this, however they cheat a bit: rather than checking the display for the logo they check to see if the memory matches known setups display the logo in various commercial games, which unfortunately means simply displaying the logo isn't enough for these emulators, you have to display it using the exact same set up as one of these commercial games

    The Xbox One actually did do something unique with rumble; they put small rumble motors in each trigger to create "Impulse triggers," working in addition to the standard rumble motors in the handles. They rumble with the rest of the controller normally as well, but developers could also choose to support the feature by specifically activating the Impulse Triggers independently, like during gunfire or driving sequences

    9:41 I wonder if we're so old and it's been long enough, a little over 18 years so older than some watchers here, that maybe gamers might not get this reference but that's for real a thing that happened.
    There was a (awesome if you're into EDM and club music) game called Rez that, when it first came out on PS2, had a "trance vibrator" that you were SUPPOSED to put in your pocket or wrist or sit on top of. And when the pretty ladies OF LEGAL AGE SO NOT KIDS (my disclaimer) in the audience discovered that sitting on it did... stuff to them, they started using it for other means than what it was intended for.
    If anyone is curious, you can google around information about it or read Wired's piece on it for the 15th anniversary of the device.

    • @rac1equalsbestgame853
      @rac1equalsbestgame853 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @RJ Cox Not precisely the problem but I'd like if there was an option to just control the intensity of it. At least to my experience, you can just turn it on or off. I don't remember much, I was young back then.
      In the few PS4 games I have, in all them the rumble is super agressive and *every other action has it atached.* Mad Max, driving in slightly rocky terrain, the controller trembles like and fing earthquake. Charging in the Spyro remakes, controller fing trembles. Good thing I can turn that shit off.
      In Switch games rumble is not only it is much softer but if feels apropiate when it does. Like the fishing in the Link's Akakening remake. There is a mild touch of rumble with small fish and it is much stronger with harder to catch fish, and even at that point it is nonewhere close to as agressive as the rumble on PS4

    The haptic feedback on the Switch is amazing. I've been playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and the rumble compliments stuff like when you're doing skillchecks; if you succeed, the rumbles *feel* like a happy little "*ding*~!", but the "failure" rumbles feel dissonant in a very specific way. It's not just vibrations, they get a lot of specific moods out of how those Joycons rumble.
    There's another GBC cart that had rumble in it: Rhino Rampage! I remember Tips And Tricks Magazine once talking about the challenges in collecting it; it came packed with a free AAA battery for its built-in rumble feature, but over time the batteries started leaking. So collectors had to choose between opening their copies and taking out the battery, lessening the MIB value to keep it from getting drastically worse, or leaving the battery in and praying the game didn't get *too* badly damaged by the battery leak.
    I love Derek and Grace, these videos are so fun!

    The Xbox One/Xbox Series actually did do something unique with rumble. There are motors inside the triggers that can be activated separate from the main motor for haptic feedback. My personal favorite uses of it are in Outlast, where during a specific scene later in the game your character has their index finger sawed off and the right trigger simulates the bone cracking, and when you're charging up an energy weapon in Halo you can feel a pulsating rumble in both triggers.

    That whole thing about "making portable games bulky," honestly kind of makes sense to me, because I've never seen someone pull a GameBoy or a DS out of their pocket, raw. There's always been some kind of protective case with room for other games

    And you forgot to mention the best part of HD Rumble. Because it works like a speaker, it can play music. Super Mario Party uses it to let you know it’s your turn. It’s quiet, but noticeable if you listen.

    XB1 put vibration in the triggers, now the ps5 controller will have that feature too. Its only really useful in racing games cause it helps you feel the car sliding but still can't say the xbox 1 didn't do much for rumble if sony and microsoft are gonna use the feature going forward.

    Umm... haptic feedback in game controllers existed before the Rumble Pak was even released; that's the PlayStation's Dual Analog Controller (specifically, the Japanese model. Non-Japanese Dual Analog Controllers have vibration function gutted). Tobal 2, the first PlayStation game to take advantage of the Dual Analog controller's features, came out a couple days before the Nintendo 64's Rumble Pak and Star Fox 64.

    Best use of HD rumble for me is Pinball FX3, you can feel the ball bounce on each flipper. One of the few games I opted to get on the Switch rather than pc. It also lets you play the game in handheld portrait mode which is fantastic for pinball.

    The about of haptic feedback possible now is phenomenal when you take into account that a good portion of games are natively mixed in a minimum of 5.1/7.1 channels with quite a few being natively encoded in 7.1.4 Atmos channels. With the .1 LFE channel in addition to sending all 120hz and below content (you can adjust the LPF filter on your AVR or pre/pro but the bandwidth is widely accepted as 10hz-120hz) all you need to add is a bass shaker or actuator powered by its own power amplifier and soon you’ll be feeling tactile feedback down to 10hz. It’s exponentially cheaper than buying subwoofers that are capable of meaningful output into the subsonic region as many companies make frequency response claims but these are done in either anechoic or semi anechoic chambers and exponentially different in each individual small room they’re placed in. I mean for $200 you can get a Buttkicker Gamer complete with the bass shaker and power amp or for around $400 you can get the larger LFE unit with a power amp. For comparison in terms of retail prices you won’t find a subwoofer that has 85-95dB output down past 15hz for below $1000 and at that point SVS and HSU are your only option unless you take into account DIY subs but that’s a whole different wormhole. I run two Buttkicker LFE’s paired with 4 SVS SB16 Ultra’s all controlled by a pair of MiniDSP 2x4HD’s and the low frequency tactile feedback is absolutely amazing. While quite expensive for the entire setup, and that’s not including the 16 channel Storm Audio processor, speakers, power amps, cables, UMIK-1 USB calibration microphone and the countless hours I’ve spent calibrating it all, it provides an assault on the senses that just simply wasn’t possible using the older native two channel PCM gaming sources.

    The Xbox One has "impulse triggers" with individual rumble motors for each trigger (in addition to the main ones). Feel especially good in racing games like Forza. Also, the Steam Controller has all sorts of haptic feedback on its touchpads that're really cool.

  • @no1DdC
    @no1DdC 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is an interesting Rumble Pak of sorts that came out before the N64, but eventually became compatible with the N64 after Nintendo released their Rumble Pak. Allow me to explain:
    In 1994, the Aura Interactor was released. It's a backpack (or later: cushion) that connects to any audio source via a pre-amp and transmits any low sounds as force feedback to the body. Despite costing only $100 when new ($50 used), it's incredibly powerful. Think about it like wearing a massive 50W rumble pack. I've got it strapped to my seat and it vibrates the whole thing and me with it. Since it uses a standard 3.5mm audio jack, it works with anything, even today. I've hooked up mine to my Xbox One X, PS3 and PC and it works beautifully. Racing games are especially great with it, since you'll actually feel the rumble of the engines, like in a real car, and in action games, every shot and every hit can be felt. Music and movies are great too and feel like hugging a subwoofer (I especially enjoy rediscovering music with it). It's not perfect by any means (since it's essentially two large speakers inside the backpack or cushion, lots of audio bleeds through, so headphones are recommended), but the effect is almost as good as with modern alternatives that cost $800 or more.
    Now why did I mention that it's compatible with the N64? Well, it would of course work out of the box with that system (just like it would with any other device that outputs sound), but some time in 1997 or later, Aura included a little rumble pack in the packaging. It looks more like a Memory Pak, except that it has a 3.5mm port at the end. It's labeled "Interactor Jolt Pack Interface" (with ck instead of k), in order to not suggest that it's an official Nintendo product, and incredibly light, since only some simple electronics are inside and no motor. No batteries are required. To the N64, it looks just like a Rumble Pak and any game that supports it will support the "Jolt Pack". Instead of the controller vibrating, now you are. The effect is many times as strong as before.
    While the Aura Interactor is easy to find, this Jolt Pack is not. There is only a single photo of it on the entire Internet, from an expired ebay auction (cached by Google for now).
    I think the whole Aura Interactor story deserves to be told. It's a fascinating thing and probably the only mid-90s gaming device that still makes sense to use with modern systems and games. While it has been covered on TH-cam, the elusive Jolt Pack in particular appears to be virtually unknown, so much so that I didn't even know it existed before discovering it in the box.

    It’s not surprising that Lumines would have Rez-like vibration support - both games were designed by Tetsuya Mizuguchi who is really into multisensory immersion.
