They removed the horns from the two because they didn't want them to resemble the Forces of Nature trio. It was mentioned in the interview which revealed they used to have horns.

They look nothing like them, it definitely would have helped them since their regular designs are so meh compared to Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee

@@veledwin1 Think it's more that they didn't want 5 oni in a single gen, so they toned down the fighting duo's oni bits. But, yeah, is pretty silly, well assuming that the real beta designs weren't more similar to the trio than what we got.

hot take: i actually like these two, my sawk was a key player on my black team, and throh just kinda soaks up the appreciation by association.
He’s pretty bulky and still has decent offenses compared to Sawk

To be honest, who wouldn't want Bert and Ernie as a Pokemon?
Also I like that the story of Momotaro also lends some inspiration for the Lillipup line, Unfeazant, and the element monkeys all being from the same region as Sawk and Throh.
And a final thought, that oni story is the most wholesome thing to come out of Japanese folklore I've ever heard.
I think Sawks name is based off socking somebody, like in a fight cause he's kind of in a fist position, same with Throh. Hes gonna throw you.

An important detail
sawks face is a reference to a story about famous karate man mas oyama. He went into the mountains to train in solitude but he started to lose his resolve and wanted to return to civilization. So he shaved off just one eyebrow as it would be embarrassing for anyone to see him in that state
and that's what motivated him to continue training

So Sawk and Throh have extremely good lore but their designs failed to convey 90% of it.
Eh, red and blue are common colors in competition like karate and taekwondo, especially since they're wearing Karate Gis plus they look like rock em, sock em robots. The oni mythology is definitely there but this video take the scenic route a few too many times to drive the point home.

There's also the trope of Red and Blue Oni, which deals with a pair of characters expressing opposite traits. The Red Oni character is commonly viewed as more aggressive or abrasive, willing to take action without thinking. The Blue Oni character is commonly viewed as more calm or strategic, preferring to wait it out before taking action. A good example of this would be classic duos like Ichigo Kurosaki and Uryu Ishida in Bleach.
one of the many aspects pokemon does love is lore. I'll give them that.

I honestly see where they're coming from to be honest and this is coming from a fan of Pokemon who also happens to be Christian. You have weird creatures that can do basically magic and follow your commands can very easily be connected to stories of people who can summon demons to do their bidding and all that crap. There's also some Pokemon such as the Abra line (and especially Alakazam) that do contain satanic elements in their design and I have found some very creepy fan art created by people who also seem to have picked up on that and brought it out to the surface. Don't even get me started on the fact that a 10 year old is supposed to be able to capture "god" and keep him in their back pocket at their back and call. Don't get me wrong I do still mostly enjoy this series, and i get why you would too but those parts definitely put a sour taste in my mouth personally.
Tl;DR A closer look at the series and you can see where people are coming from even with the "harmless" cartoony exterior. It doesn't mean your worshipping Satan just because you play (again, coming from a fan whose also Christian) but it's not as far fetched as you would think.

The reason why Throh is the red oni and Sawk the blue one can be linked to 2 oni story, where the blue oni attacked the village (therefore Sawk being the "offensive" one) and the red oni defended the village (and thats why Throh learns a lot of defensive moves).

I though their colors come from the Korean flag. Red and blue. As they are base on judo and hapkido that are Korean martial arts
Judo is Japanese. And Sawk is based on karate which is also Japanese (Okinawa specifically).

I had a friend who loved this Pokémon, now there one of the most memorable Pokémon to me because of how much they talked about, now matter how much I hate the Pokémon I will always remember them

You made me appreciate the inspiration and backstory of these Pokémon and it makes me sad that all of that was misrepresented with these bad designs, they are still the ones I most hate and if I could I would delete them from existence.

Not sure if anyone's pointed this out, but in most martial arts competitions in the US (like USNKF) red and blue belts are used during matches for easy ways to keep track of competitors and to not also let the competitors be aware of their opponent's belt rank, since divisions are based off experience in years, not belt color

Yes, but no. They are theoretically not because they don't look similar at all. But technically they are, because they are supposed to take the same role as Hitmonlee and Hirmonchan.
No, because they look nothing like each other. Sure, they have a martial arts theme, but so do a lot of Fighting types.
No, They do Share Martial Arts Themes but Almost All Other Fighting Type Pokémon also Share that Theme As Well and I just like S & T more
TBH I've always liked these guys. I used Sawk on my team for my first playthrough of SwSh and he put in some serious work.

Fun fact in some types of media for the legend of the red and blue oni the red one has two horns and the blue one has one. This is incorporated in Sawk and Trough’s design in their eyebrows having two jutting ones for Trough’s (Red Oni) and one prominent eyebrow jutting to the right for sawk’s (Blue Oni)

do you know how OP Sawk is in competitive.
just have a level 1 Sawk with the sturdy ability make it hold berry juice. give it the moves toxic and pain split then your set. basically the only way to defeat it is entry hazards and toxic or will o wisp or multi hit moves.
