I think my first thought when I heard that Hatterene attacks those with strong emotions wasn't that it was from envy or hatred. Her G-max entry states that she "can read the emotions of creatures over 30 miles away." There are an awful lot of creatures in that area whose emotions she picks up! Can you imagine how that must feel? No wonder she'd attack those with strong emotions when all she wants is some peace and quiet without hundreds of people and Pokemon shouting in her head. Just as a bonus, regular sound alone is enough to get unwanted attention if "you're too loud around it." This was before I seriously thought about the fact that this is literally just hyperempathy + sensory overload.
@@andrewolson5471 wasn't there an anime episode that literally confirmed this? I haven't watched most of the show but it was Diamond and Pearl for sure
Is it possible for Cyrus in the eventual Sinnoh Remake to have Hatterene? They're a match made in heaven. A guy that hates emotions, and a PKMN that hates emotions.

OH and as well as the plant...!” “Phill this new game is E for everyone” “The new seductive Pokémon is kinda yandere in a way” “You’re fired” “Great!”
“This Pokémon is yandere in a way” Yandere love someone a lot Hatterene loves basically no one Tl,dr: you accidentally put yandere instead of psychopath
When I first saw Hatterene, I thought she looked like an old-fashioned perfume bottle, the kind that has the little squeeze-ball attached to a tube that controls the spray, which connects more to her femininity
Imagine if they gave the hatenna line grimmsnarl's colors for a shiny. Black hats and green skin to really drive the witch point home. On top of that, it could reference the relationship between the two lines.
That would be awesome! Nickname Hattterene Gruntilda just for fun. And the lower parts of her body would be from black hat tip to red and blood like colors at the bottom.
At first I didn't get it, but new pokedex entries for Hattrem in Scarlet suggest that both it and hatterene hear emotions essentially as a noise. The stronger the emotion, the louder it is. I would have lost it too if everyone around me was constantly shouting at the top of their lungs.
Hatterene's "ene" part could come from the old moon Goddess Selene and it makes more sense with Dynamax entries. They could be seen as something that isn't always as what it seems; Hatterene looks sweet but it has a hair-trigger rage problem. Also if Hatterene is the forest witch she could be referring to Baba-Yaga (or Jaga) of Slovic lore.
But, I would love to see an episode where a Grimmsnarl, or any of it's pre evolutions, falls in love with hattrene, or one where appletun falls for a tsareena.
I love Hatterene! It’s pretty close to my favorite Fairy type. I’m usually a huge fan of feminine Pokémon after all Primarina is my favorite Pokémon of all time. Feminine Pokémon remind me of the beauty of the opposite gender and my mother and sister, two of the closest people to me.
This isn't really about the video, but i think grimmsnarls are the male counterpart to hatterene's species and they are dark types as means of approaching females. As females can read and are hostile towards strong emotions, their dark type comes into play, making so that hatterenes can't read their minds/emotions, and therefore not being hostile. I don't know i just tought about that
I fell like the hatterene line and the grimsnarl line would be natural enemies, sinze one hates strong emotions like anger and frustration and the other delights in causing them
I've never really gotten "jellyfish" from Hatterene. When I look at it, I see a candlestick. I thought the candlestick look might be a reference to witches using candles in rituals...but I like your theory about the jellyfish traits!
Me: Whoa this is a really great video I should like, comment and- *Hatterene bursts into my room and beats me to pulp* Me: ... But why- *Grimelsnarl joins in*
Seeing Hatterene with different 'hats' like bowler hats, cowboy hats, snow hats, turbans?, maybe not the trilby lol, visors, cat ear hats, baseball caps, beanies, boat hats, trappers hat, newsboy caps, and so on and so forth. I like hats.
An additional source of the inspiration could be the Sidhe. In many tales making a pact with them require that you give something valuable up in return. Perhaps a child of your own? The childlike figure in Hatterene could be the transformed child, turned in something alien to humanity. There has been legends of fairies snatching babies to raise as their own, and placing a substitute to serve in their pace. They're called changelings and it was said that cold iron could injure one.
Chloe from Pokémon Journeys would be the luckiest person to catch a Hatterene in a future episode of the anime series. Ash and Go only will makes Hatterene furious because they have strong emotions.
11:44 There's one story/fairy tale that I remember reading where the princess was also a witch. I think it was called "The King of the Wind," but I can't quite remember. I'll have to look it up. Edit: I found it! It was actually called "King Stork"
12:48 - Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Tangled the only adaptation where Rapunzel's hair is actually magical? All other adaptations, and even the original I think, Rapunzel's hair just happened to be really long.
honestly i think this is my favorite video in a long time because i love where all of the lore came from in this because witches and mythology is great and also the jokes were heckin on point
Another fun witch reference in Hatterene is that she is really lightweight: 5,1 kg or 11,2 lbs. This is interesting because witches were later believed to be very lightweight to support flying on a broomstick. This had as a consequence that in Oudewater, the Netherlands the so called 'heksenwaag' or witches scales, which is one giant balance scale to weigh humans as ultimate proof they were not witches.
I could totally see Hatterene and Gardevoir as best friends. Hatterene getting overwhelmed by strong emotions and Gardevoir sending her stress and knowing when to take her away for some chamomile tea and and a good fairy tale. Gardevoir as the only Pokemon to help her get out of her head (cause her physical body is very much trapped within the "head" form of the overall design, I'm surprised this wasn't commented on in the video)
Fanart: Hatterene is a malicious, powerful, Dommy mommy (hatemyselfforthat) Actual Hatterene: Squishy Jelly, smiles a lot, very affectionate with their trainer, but stressed if someone is too intense with their emotions.
Hatterenes have the ideology of old myth or tails that say that getting a huge punishment for a small and minor thing that you did is okay and doing bad things to people because of a little non-significant thing that they did is okay. What's funny is that how they choose to keep a calm environment ironically makes more chaotic. Telling/advising/warning someone to calm down is a completely different thing than physically abusing someone just because they're crying and very sad or have a lot of another emotion. That would just cause them to cry more, get angry and start attacking back, be afraid which would most likely cause a fight or flight response, or another emotion. Causing violence would cause a less peaceful and more environment. This can lead to surrounding Pokemon and humans to be scared and run, get angry and attack it because the person or pokemon it attack has friends nearby, want to prepare and come back later to attack it, or another response. They have ironically became a sign of disturbance and destruction rather than serenity. They have allowed this way of thinking to twist there minds until now they have become the very thing they swore to destroy.
Gaijin did a great breakdown and touches more on the whole "witch's hair contains magic" and more in his video about Bayonetta too! That's where I learned this from! 😊
This series is one of my favorites! I have always been fascinated by mythology and folklore, and learning how Pokemon ties in with them is just as mind-numbingly awesome! Once I get back to work, I am totally going to join Patreon to support you
Also the OG crazy cat lady, people always assume that she's supposed to be this grimdark goddess because of her connection to death, but she was actually one of the more sympathetic deities in the pantheon.
She's also the one who guides Persephone into and out of the underworld bi-yearly. She actually had quite a cult following in the entire mediterranean region. She also started out as singular in her depiction and only later had the three-form image. It's basically the way they expressed her power- similar to the many arms of Hindu gods expressing their manifold power.
As a Pagan and witch myself it was really fun watching this video! You got our history pretty spot on and it was fun to talk about Pokémon alongside my ancestors history as well! Thanks for making this fun and educational video!

I've developed a close bond with this line which made me develop theories on their behavior. The line's behavior reminds me of the traits of autism(traits I possess myself) but more amped up. Now I'm not saying this line has autism, more so that they can quite easily suffer from sensory overload similar to folks with autism. I think these Pokemon aren't naturally aggressive antisocial Pokemon(similar to how witches weren't the evil child kidnappers folks considered them to be) but rather are sensitive to things such as strong emotion and noise and simply don't know how to deal with suffering sensory overload so they resort to the one thing they know that has been working, scaring others away or attacking them. It could be why domestic/caught variants of this line don't show the same aggression as unlike in the wild they have access to folks who are able to teach them less drastic means of dealing with being overwhelmed.
And as we see in Hatterene's later animations, especially the fainting one, ALL of its hair/large body is actually tentacles that it uses to move around.

What if Brock comes back and Hatterene vibe checks him for loving all the girls he sees just like Misty did?
I think my first thought when I heard that Hatterene attacks those with strong emotions wasn't that it was from envy or hatred. Her G-max entry states that she "can read the emotions of creatures over 30 miles away." There are an awful lot of creatures in that area whose emotions she picks up! Can you imagine how that must feel? No wonder she'd attack those with strong emotions when all she wants is some peace and quiet without hundreds of people and Pokemon shouting in her head. Just as a bonus, regular sound alone is enough to get unwanted attention if "you're too loud around it."
This was before I seriously thought about the fact that this is literally just hyperempathy + sensory overload.
The fact that I named my Hatterene “MadHatterene” because of Alice and Wonderland

Me too hatterene is pretty close to my favorte fairy and primarina is my favorite pokemon of all time i love feminine pokemon
I don't know i just tought about that
I fell like the hatterene line and the grimsnarl line would be natural enemies, sinze one hates strong emotions like anger and frustration and the other delights in causing them
Perhaps the hatred for strong emotions stems from battles with grimmsnarls?
These two would hate dragapult too

An additional source of the inspiration could be the Sidhe. In many tales making a pact with them require that you give something valuable up in return. Perhaps a child of your own? The childlike figure in Hatterene could be the transformed child, turned in something alien to humanity. There has been legends of fairies snatching babies to raise as their own, and placing a substitute to serve in their pace. They're called changelings and it was said that cold iron could injure one.
Which makes sense in Hatterene's case considering that upon gaining a Fairy typing upon evolution, it becomes weak to Steel type moves.

7:53 Up to this point I had forgotten this was a Pokémon video.
Fanart: Hatterene is a malicious, powerful, Dommy mommy (hatemyselfforthat)
Actual Hatterene: Squishy Jelly, smiles a lot, very affectionate with their trainer, but stressed if someone is too intense with their emotions.

She's also the one who guides Persephone into and out of the underworld bi-yearly. She actually had quite a cult following in the entire mediterranean region.
