  • LOL made you click.... Well, technically it is free as the files to make one yourself are on thingiverse! :D
    Hey guys! Today I've got a Hovercraft! this thing is entirely 3D printed (the hull and frame) The design is a fairly simple one which can be printed in about 24hrs depending on your printer and settings, the pieces are no larger than 200mm X 200mm x 200mm so most pursia style printers should be able to fit the parts.
    The parts are up here on Thingiverse - STL Files:

    I freaking love hovercrafts. If you're printing with ABS, try gluing the parts together with ABS cement. I've had pretty good luck with it.

      great points! yep I tried fusing some abs together with acetone and Its amazing, the parts broke elsewhere than the joint. The hovercraft is PLA unfortunately so i'll have to try other glues!

    Have you heard of 3D printing Friction welding? It's when you put a piece of filament in your dremel and pull it towards you over a crack in your print or to stick things together, the filament melts and the spinning carves a channel in the print to fill with melted filament... Pretty cool if you ask me?

    Awesome... I made one years ago out of Balsa and foam with a ripstop skirt.. Having a separate control for the lift motor is a must.. it works way better that way.. I used a Brushed motor for the lift motor hooked up to a relay that plugged into the receiver then I could just flip a switch if I got in trouble and it would drop to the ground.

    From my 3d printing experience both PLA and ABS are very well glued (technically checmically welded) by
    - Dichloreethane (very aggressive to plastic, strongest bond but toxic as well). Use it to glue 3dprinted planes.
    - Ethylacetate (less aggressive and much less toxic)

    For skirt material, try a $2-3 dacron stuff sack sold in walmart's backpacking isle. Most of the issues you're having seem to stem from your choice of skirt design. I'd recommend looking up "jetted skirt". That's the one I got the best performance out of back when I made an RC hovercraft. (I also tried a bag skirt, constrained bag skirt, and interlinked finger skirt.)

    its probably been said but with the skirt if you pleat it with ducts around the edges to allow an air curtain your lift will be greater and more controlled. another variant is instead of one large vent in the middle of the belly move it forward one third of the hull to help with the thrust pitching the nose down into the water as you wont have as much lift under the thrust motor

    Hi Peter, I built my hovercraft out 1\2" pink foam, I used a 1 100kv w a 10" prop for hover and a 2 200kv w 6" ( park jet) for thrust. I put the hover motor on the gear switch and set it for around 35% and rudder on aeleron, works great but on water not as much, the skirt which is slightly different than yours but basicly the same collects water and is then bogged down. Full size overcome this problem by basically being a boat hull with the air vents placed at the top outside edgs so even if therss no power it floats with the vents above the water line. heres a link

    The idea way to set up the lift motor on one of these is with a radio that's got a fully proportional knob for a channel. I just moved into a Futaba 6J and its sixth channel is on such a knob, so I'd use Ch6 for the lift fan on mine.
    I'd probably also use a car ESC instead of a plane ESC to control the thrust fan, mostly, so I can get reverse out of it. Also, car ESCs are often already waterproofed right out of the box, which is seldom if ever the case with plane ESCs.

    just an idea for skirt material, the lining you put down to make ponds is thicker then trashbags, yet still pretty thin, and very strong. rather then glue, you might be able to heat fuse the seams. I'm not looking to make one, just using my grey matter

  • @reshawshid
    @reshawshid 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Idea for a better skirt: use the material you find in the higher end air matresses. It is very cut resistant, and although the weight is higher, it might be worth it.

    Peter picks something relatable, so the viewers can understand what driving the hovercraft is like.
    "it's kinda like driving a jet-ski" - V. relatable...

  • @RubSomefastOnIt
    @RubSomefastOnIt 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    you for sure need a separate throttle for the lift motor, one you can dial to the speed you want and then leave it alone and just focus on driving it with the other throttle and rudders. like a real hovercraft.
    or you could just have an on/of switch through a speed control for the skirt motor separately.

  • @dylanmilne6683
    @dylanmilne6683 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    On water skimming: make the skirt just larger slightly at the front and the craft should angle up alternatively play with weight distribution and rear fan elevation and you might get the same effect.

    Another excellent video Peter, I can't believe you're at 110k subs already! Last time I checked you were at 11k haha.
    Have you considered running the bottom facing motor on a 3 way switch? It wouldn't be hard to map the motor to an auxillary switch so you can just flick it on and the bag remains inflated so you can control speed/turning.
