(The updated Performance has a staggered setup, 235/35R20 front - same as the pre-refresh - but 275/30R20 at the back.) Michelin *used* to be the OE. Some years back, the European Model 3 shipped on the PS4 for the standard 18"s, and PS4S for the performance's 20".
Still would of lost. 1 lap around a 1 min track doesn't say much now once u saw the endurance test and multiple laps that says alot about how they perform on track. Tesla was A MILE behind.
Randy is the nicest, down to earth, hall of famer you'll ever meet. Got to see him at Miata Reunion at Sonoma couple of weeks ago when Randy drove up in a lime green M4.
It seems like a fairly pointless section. Performance cars are a purely emotional purchase. They are less efficient, more expensive to insure and operate, less comfortable, etc. Trying to subject a fundamentally emotional decision to the rigors of logic is precisely why Jason continually fails to understand the car community's broad disdain for EV performance cars.
@flyingphoenix113 then why would they be delighted by the fact that u can get a Miata and a GR86 for the price of the M3 competition if they're not enjoyers of the ICE sports car experience? If they didn't understand the charm of ICE sports cars, why would they say that other purpose built sports cars would be as exciting as the M3 competition on a backroad at half the speed?
I love how people want to put there shortcomings on others. Emotional car buyers are just what dealerships are looking for, another sucker that will overpay for an already overpriced hunk of metal. Not happening here.
@13:12 Wait, WHAT!! Both of these are faster than a Ferrari 458?! My God cars really have come a long way since the days of 458's Top Gear fame! Deep respect to both BMW and Tesla for bringing supercar performance from a decade ago within a normal functional family car today, that's insane.
@@3rdworldgarage450 Eeeeh. How much of that is down to the insane performance of modern tires, though? The 458 was working with Pirellis whose spec is now a decade old, so one wonders how much that time would come down with new Pilot Sport 4S tires on. This doesn't make the BMW, Tesla, or CTR _less_ impressive, but still.
@@mitchell-wallisforce7859 but by that logic the M3P and M3 carbon had the same lap time because they were identical until the M3P’s tires degraded. Maybe the M3P would have been faster with the same tires. Ultimately I agree with you but it’s difficult to have a track time leader board when technology and dynamics change with every passing test. Maybe they can do a benchmark car where they lap it with every tire and provide a coefficient to the time for a tire corrected leaderboard.
@KTMcaptain The tires degraded because the Tesla weighs the same as a semi truck 😂 if it was on the BMWs compound it would have destroyed the beemer in the first half and then degraded way, way faster.

I can't be the only to be able to appreciate both cars. Both are marvels of engineering in their own right, and though their uses and target audiences may differ, I dare to say they both are just as capable to deliver joy to their drivers. For me, the M3 feels like a sports car (I know, I know, sports sedan, but anyways) that is surprisingly capable for daily driving. While the Tesla feels like an excellent daily driver that is surprisingly capable on a track. But for the price, I do agree with Jason that I would get the Tesla, Miata and GR86 instead of just the BMW. Gotta say, this channel's production is through the roof! It's like watching hollywood level quality about cars with fantastic narration. Gotta love the humor too (I burst out laughing at the Mac startup sound for Tesla charging). Special shoutout to your music guy, the score was so engaging and made the whole video more immersive.
The beauty of it is that you don't have to be able to afford an M3 P. Very few people have the wherewithal to afford such a beast, let alone maintain it. I did notice the Toyota Supra was nearly equal to the Model 3 Performance in lap time. Still, it's way more money than the Model 3. Give Tesla credit for building a car an enthusiast can appreciate, just bring back the turn signal stalk, or make it an option.
I've had my Tesla M3P for 2 month now. Coming from 5 years with a BMW m240i I have to say, this Tesla is amazing. As a daily driver I couldn't be more happy. It's stupid quick in a straight line too. 10.88 @126 1/4 mile and 2.97 sec 0-60 at 95% SOC. For 49k out the door with 1.99% interest, it's a steal!

Jason's videos are the only ones that I won't skip while watching. It's a shame that there are people who keep accusing him of being biased one way or the other when he clearly does his upmost to be as objective as humanly possible. Car enthusiasts went from being the absolute best group of people whom you'd ever interact with to people I actively try to avoid because of how toxic they've become. I really hope they don't ruin this for Jason like they have for me. It would be a huge loss for the car community.
Dude, I completely agree. One of the reasons I became a car guy and a mechanic was because of those old school car guys, but that generation has sadly disappeared and been replaced by the real house wives of lifetime drama and I've never wanted out of the motorpool more. How dare anyone be objective and honest and have fun doing it.
The Model 3 Performance has indeed come a long way. A quick test drive really shows how good the adaptive suspension really is. The ventilated seats are perfect for the hot days, and it sure is more than fast enough. The problem is cars like the M3 are dying, and if you want one, now it’s the time to buy. The Model 3 Performance? It’ll only get better from here.
It really is incredible now that the Model 3 Performance gives you M3 performance at an M340 price (actually cheaper). Maybe it is time to trade the M340 in.
How does the Model 3 give you M3 performance? It lost a lot in one lap and a lightyear in 15 minutes. Straightline it is fast no doubt but as soon as there are corners, you are way slower in the Model 3.
I know that the comparison was on factory spec, but I'd like to see the track comparison on equal tires. The M3 might still lap quicker, but the difference might be less. Also, for purely academic reasons, it would be interesting to see how many laps the Tesla could go in its top performance mode, versus its endurance mode.

I have owned both of these cars (well, the previous generation Model 3 Performance). I've driven the new Highland Model 3. It is much better car. I haven't driven the performance yet. I currently own a G80 Comp xDrive. This review nails it pretty well. You can claw back some of the price difference by not opting for the carbon buckets or ceramic brakes. Neither of which is necessary if you're not going to track your car. Like me. The base seats are quite good for back road hooning and MUCH easier to live with on a daily basis. The infotainment question....yes, iDrive is convoluted, but it gets easier to use with time. Tesla's UI is much, MUCH better but it has infuriating (truly) traits like requiring auto high beams to run Autopilot (which act like they are drunk), camera based auto wipers (which also act drunk), the idiotic lack of a turn signal stalk, no carplay or android auto (tesla's UI absolutely SUCKS for messaging) and other irritations which add up over time. Like streaming radio services that drop out and glitch, etc. And while the whole "the M3 steering is numb and I wouldn't get out of bed on a sunday morning to drive it" trope has some truth to it, the fact is, unless you've got a bunch of dedicated cars in the garage for just that purpose, the M3 gets your blood going just fine on a Sunday morning. The AWD system, even on full, still allows the tail to be happy. And re-coding the steering with the calibration from the M3 CS increases steering feel ENORMOUSLY. And it's a lot more fun to hear the engine pull through the gears, even when I know it's not as efficient or as practical. I had a 997 Turbo S and the Model 3 performance. So I had that "horses for courses" thing that Jason mentions. But you know what? I got tired of driving my Model 3 and looking at 911 sitting in the garage. So I bought one car to replace them both. Model 3: super, super impressive. M3 still wins.
@@joetacchino4470 well said, but people are different, hence why different cars exist, for me with all respect to what you said and experienced, the M3P still wins, I haven't driven the new M3P as well but if the improvements they talk about is this extensive then I'm all in for the new M3P over M3, I haven't driven the competition version but I didn't like the M3 and how it felt like in general. Plus I never used the infotainment for messaging or even playing around with it while driving (Maybe I'm just too careful😄) but it didn't annoy me, no stalks thing at first was weired, but I like it now, muscle memory made it ok for me to use the buttons just fine but still the indicator placement is dumb. I'm gonna save my gas money for my supercars for the weekend😂
I really think Jason just panders to the tesla cult fans that rage at him when their car loses. The title of the video is seeing what car is better at being a sports car. Bmw won every single category.. braking, handling, sound, interior, performance ,etc... all of which makes the better sports car. But losses becuase of price? They should re title the video to say " If ur broke and need some performance get a model 3" 😂
@@PEACEOUTXX1no I agree with Jason's take. A cheap light weight japanese sports car is more fun to drive than the m3. The Tesla is a better daily, when you consider what your money can get you it seems that the Tesla and a dedicated cheap sports car are the best value😊
@chrxx4327 u might wanna rewatch the video. Jason said the m3 comp was more fun to drive then the tesla. It literally won in every sports car category. The tesla won in Jason's subjective pandering which was daily driving. I'd look more forward to driving a m3 comp everyday cruising around then a tesla. Price is the only real reason to choose the tesla. The bmw m3 won being a better sports car and the numbers backing it. Which Jason even admitted. He at no point said the model 3 was more fun to drive.
Good point about the price… but some people only have 1 spot to park their car. And remember then you have to keep all of them insured, registered them, clean them, make sure you drive the little track car so the battery doesn’t go flat (or keep it on a trickle charge… or remove the battery when not driving). Plus… have you tried telling your partner that you are buying 2 more cars to “muck around in”? It’s not that practical to have three cars (trust me). If you can afford an all-rounder… buy the all-rounder.
As others have said, this quality, entertainment, and journalistic enjoyment of the two of these guys together is epic. Keep this up guys, awesome content. One of the best car reviews I’ve watched.

Been looking forward to this video! I current Model 3 Performance driver that came from driving an E90 335i (I am also a Subaru guy for context), I love this video. Great testing and really compelling conclusions. I will just say that I have in fact gotten up early to take the M3P up into the mountains, and I don't think that the turn signal buttons on the wheel are that bad when you get used to them. I need to play with Drift Mode and Endurance mode apparently. I just wish tires weren't so darn expensive... Love these videos!
The turn signal stalk argument always strikes me as weird. Sure it's less familiar, and I haven't actually driven a Tesla to see how they work in practice, but it seems to me that having your turn signal indicators rotate with your hands rather than being fixed to the steering column would be a good thing. You don't see anyone claiming column mounted paddle shifters are better than wheel mounted paddle shifters after all.

This is with my testing at Fontana speedway. But all these new cars would leave me in the dust aha. It’s just incredible what 10 years does for performance cars.
I have an m3p. Raced a bit when I was young. Did a rally driving course and folksracing in Finland. Road course in the USA. My biggest criticism of the m3p are the brakes. They fade spooky fast. Other than that, handles great! Slight rear bias. Goes like the clappers. If i were to actually track it, I'd upgrade the brakes and rotors and find a way to duct air from the front to the front disks directly.
If you were young when you raced it, you must still be young. Coming from a 58-year-old - I was young in the 80s and 90s and definitely no m3ps back then.
Another great video by Haggerty. It’s nice to get an unbiased car review. It’s sucks that Tesla uses Perrelli Tires. It’s funny how they expose how completely dishonest throttle house was after nine laps in the M3P without the brakes overheating. Great content! I daily a Tesla Model 3 Performance, but that doesn't mean that I don't appreciate what the M3 Competition is or will do. And if I had the disposable income for both, I would get the beemer too!
Just great as usual from these two hosts. One other thing that was not mentioned and is always surprising to me is that BMW needed 40 years to get to this level of performance in a "daily driver" but Tesla is only at their second iteration of Model 3, practically 6 years. Add to this the massive price difference and it's obvious to anyone with a working brain that BMWs bussiness model is not going in the right direction: massively overpriced cars that will sell in lower and lower volumes because they address a smaller and smaller market: super rich that afford expensive toys.
Tesla got to this performance level by poaching engineers and designers from other companies that already knew how to make a fast car - Tesla had the same 40 years of experience as BMW. I do agree that BMW has lost their way though - terrible afterthought manual transmissions, garbage piped in fake exhaust audio, and zero steering feel should never be part of "the ultimate driving experience". Cadillac has taken that crown from both Tesla and BMW surprisingly.
Cars are going to follow the same path as watches. BMW is going to need to become Rolex to survive. Price it very high, make it extremely luxurious, and the engine becomes a beautiful antique for enthusiasts to appreciate, just like the mechanical action in a watch.
@@artifishul Not sure about this. The car industry is over 100 years old and didn’t go in this direction. Also, BMW has broad portfolio of cars including. quite affordable ones (not M-cars). Considering how ridiculously expensive those Perellis are,its a laugh that it was the only weak point of the M3P. Would be interesting to see both cars back with exact same tires, and see how close the laps would be. Great video guys ❤😊

@@Line-vw5io Not the Performance, sadly. I think it comes on the same Pirellis as North American market Model 3s.
I *hope* I'm wrong, as I have one on the way, and I'd rather have Michelins than Pirellis. But Michelin don't show anything that's Tesla OE for the rear sizing. (The updated Performance has a staggered setup, 235/35R20 front - same as the pre-refresh - but 275/30R20 at the back.)
Michelin *used* to be the OE. Some years back, the European Model 3 shipped on the PS4 for the standard 18"s, and PS4S for the performance's 20".

Jason calls out the feelings vs facts debacle. Also love the full frontal nature of this ep. Breath of fresh air
It seems like a fairly pointless section. Performance cars are a purely emotional purchase. They are less efficient, more expensive to insure and operate, less comfortable, etc. Trying to subject a fundamentally emotional decision to the rigors of logic is precisely why Jason continually fails to understand the car community's broad disdain for EV performance cars.
a car to sum is an emotional purchase. Otherwise buggatti wouldnt be in business
Tesla cult fans are the biggest nerds ever. Jason hit the nail on the head in his podcast

@@mitchell-wallisforce7859 but by that logic the M3P and M3 carbon had the same lap time because they were identical until the M3P’s tires degraded. Maybe the M3P would have been faster with the same tires.

a 2023 civic type r is also faster . And a better car all around than any tesla .

The turn signal stalk argument always strikes me as weird. It’s crazy how far cars have came. I remember watching head 2 head and getting my 2015 Mustang GT premium and it being a seriously quick car. 0-60 in 4.4 seconds and a 1/4 mile of 12.6 @113mph. This is with my testing at Fontana speedway. But all these new cars would leave me in the dust aha. It’s just incredible what 10 years does for performance cars.
Had to stop getting ready for work for this one. Another amazing episode!
To be honest, that green BMW is simply too cool
I have an m3p. Raced a bit when I was young. Did a rally driving course and folksracing in Finland. Road course in the USA.
My biggest criticism of the m3p are the brakes. They fade spooky fast.
Other than that, handles great! Slight rear bias. Goes like the clappers. If i were to actually track it, I'd upgrade the brakes and rotors and find a way to duct air from the front to the front disks directly.
If you were young when you raced it, you must still be young. Coming from a 58-year-old - I was young in the 80s and 90s and definitely no m3ps back then.
@alangil40 I didn't say I raced the m3p. I raced cars when I was young. Late 80's early 90's. The best car I raced was a 968 stripped out for weight.
@@thebarkingmouse Got it now, misread at first. But that makes much more sense.
This is one of the best written reviews since the hay day of top gear
Gotta give Mr. Esposito his flowers here... nice work man!
Another great video by Haggerty. It’s nice to get an unbiased car review. It’s sucks that Tesla uses Perrelli Tires. It’s funny how they expose how completely dishonest throttle house was after nine laps in the M3P without the brakes overheating. Randy freaking out to Thomas’s anti-tesla rant then proving him a liar was hilarious
Great content! I daily a Tesla Model 3 Performance, but that doesn't mean that I don't appreciate what the M3 Competition is or will do. And if I had the disposable income for both, I would get the beemer too!
Love a good Throttle House cameo!
Keep in mind that BMW also sells EVs. Here in Germany BMW overtook already Tesla in sales of EV. So be careful with your predictions.
Even Tesla struggles to build a cheap Model, like a Model 1 or Model 2 bc. they earn now already less Margin than car makers like BMW.
@@toolsforfools Watches were around for hundreds of years before battery/quartz watches stepped onto the scene. Once that happened the mechanical watchmakers had no choice but to pivot. Of course that hasn't happened with cars yet, since there wasn't an alternative until now. Right now you can get a superior Tesla for half the cost of the BMW, and electric cars just keep getting cheaper.
Randy is my favorite driver. He's a rolling science lab. He's a badass. Well-made video guys!
“say M3 three times and Randy appears” lmao
Impressive writing and production. THANK YOU for getting outside the automotive journalism box that everyone else operates within.
Thank you, gotta agree!
I will personally always take the gas car because I love the noise. You can’t put a burble tune on a Model 3. However the Model 3 is the clear winner. As always Jason and the team bring us quality! I love every episode and I hope to see the Carmudgen podcast talk about the episode as well
Thx a mill! Yep, the noise is an important factor.
That is very subjective, totally depends on the driver. I’ve been a sports car freak all my life owning and modding VW’s as a kid and then Porsche’s and BMW’s as I got older. Now that Im 55, I prefer the powerful yet quietness of the Tesla over the BMW any day. Loud exhausts, Pops and crackles are especially annoying!!!
Great video! Would've liked to see the track time of the Model 3 Performance with a Michelin spec tire. Bet the times would've been a lot closer
The day these 2 leave I'm leaving with them. Best videos hands down
Incredible perspective at the end. I'd have the Model 3 Long Range, A GR86 track car, and a ton of cash in my pocket over the M3.
Absolutely and anyway Tesla 3 Performance makes little sense given that you cannot go for a Sunday 3 hour drive due to overheating and not enough range.
@@plamenkostov1301🤦
@@plamenkostov1301 That's completely false lol. Of course you can. You can go on a 6-7 hour drive without charging.
@@logitech4873 I guess we have a different idea of what driving is, but enjoy
@@plamenkostov1301 No driving on public roads will ever overheat a tesla, unless you're being extremely reckless - in which case you shouldn't have a license.
