Hi all, another quick reminder about watching these commercials... this is how The Bonsai Zone is generating revenue to continue to educate and entertain us! Let's all help... thank you...
I was outside working on my trees. I had my tree on my turntable on my serving tray. I reached for my clippers and there walks a tick! So now I watch this video feeling the creepy crawlys. Another note, I got home from my family reunion on Monday evening. I just got done unpacking when all hell broke loose. A tornado hit my town. I didn’t know that was what it was. But I ran outside and started putting my trees under benches. I repotted allot of trees this spring. A dozen or better got uprooted before I could get them to safety. I remember being about a third of the way through, looking up at the sky thinking “am I in a tornado?” I’m nursing my damaged plants on my porch and inside under grow lights. No home damage tho.👍
Hey Nigel, im from Brasil and you have a great tree for a Bonsai. If you allow me to a Quick tip, you should Put thes tree in a really big pot, like 10 kg of soil. They grow really fast, and the Trunk Will thick faster. After you have a good Trunk and roots you start the cannapy from zero, the ramification Its really fast you Will have a better tree
Hope that once you removed the tick, that's the end of that and nothing further develops. The Brazilian Rain Tree is looking really good already, the structure looks very natural on it.
Nigel, that BRT looks so vigorous, I just put mine outside for the year and hope I get half the growth on it yours has. Thanks for sharing. Glad you were able to get the tick out, I never have had one, but have had pups with some.
What a beautiful butterfly! The Brazilian Rain Tree looks good, too! I hope the tick bite was fine... I like most animals, but mosquitoes and ticks... no.
@@donnaikin7397 Not a good idea to prevent Lyme Disease. Ticks infected with the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease, Borrelia burgdorferi, typically need to be attached for 36 - 48 hours. So if it falls off after 2 - 3 days, the risk of disease is high. Consulting with a medical clinician as soon as possible, is the best way to proceed, especially if the entire tick was not removed, to determine if taking an antibiotic, as prophylaxis against disease, is the best course of action for you.
@@jballenger9240 Thanx for your reply. I'm not sure if we have Lyme disease in Australia. But I was more thinking of my dog not me personally. I can't go into the bush any more.
Pro tip, take a long shower with lots of soap if you are worried about ticks. It should cause them to fall off and drown. Throw your clothes in the dryer too. ticks are the worst. Best thing is to be aware and do routine checks during the hike and after.
Wow, that looks amazing, good sir! Very elegant, indeed. And I fricken dig how that lower scar is healing/not healing over. That is a cool feature right there.
Man you have to be one of the most amazing people I have ever watched. The amount of genuine love and interest you show in wild life is really inspiring. I have never seen someone just pick up a butterfly lol. Your'e an inspiration. Did these rain trees happen to root? Is there any way for your American fans to get access to a cutting or two?
Ticks is a pain in norway too. Got one last year when i was out colecting moss. In the armpit. You can very sick with this things. Take your Antibiotics! Did you get a hair cut nigel?
I don't mind bugs or insects (or spideys) in general, but i could live without tics and deer flys. Varg does not appreciate tics either. The BRT is looking fabulous. The foliage is so pretty 💚
lol @ subscription for the antibiotic. Sucks that it stuck in you! That happened to me way back in high school and they didn't even freeze me to cut it out! I love the Brazilian Raintree!
Sorry to hear about the tick! I take my dog with me collecting and we almost always pick up a hitchhiker by the time we get back to the car. They’re nasty little things.
I absolutely need a brazilian raintree now myself! I think you talked about repotting your Baobabs in earlier videos. Are you still planning to do that? I was hoping to see you doing it before working on mine :D By the way, thanks for all the inspiration, I'm very happy I found your channel. Greetings from Germany :)
Now you know why old-time outdoorsmen wore high top boots with long pants tucked into the top of their boots, then long-sleeved shirts with shirttails tucked into their pants. It was to prevent ticks (and fleas) from getting under their clothing. Cowboys in particular, because cattle were often infested with ticks.
The Brzilian rain tree looks a bit like the tamarind tree I grew from seeds. Its a nice height but sparse, so I'm hoping Nigel to try some of the pruning techniques you show and which I watch intently. You are a good teacher and I sometimes tell you to cut a certain branch and you do, so I'm learning well. I grew a sumac from seed and it taken, its 3 ft tall. Any advice on what I could do as it a single stem and I would like your style a smaller branch lower down. I noticed you don't have one, or do you? I'm looking forward to a response, so thanks if you have the time.
I have gotten Lyme infection once. I didn't see the tick at all, just the typical itchy red spot where I had been bitten. First I thought I had been bitten by a mosquito, but as the red spot kept growing, I knew immediately that it was Lyme. Got the antibiotics and the problem was treated. There is also TBE in my area, but it is much more rare.
I had 8 ticks this year my dog only had 5 but my cat have like 3-5 every day so i get training in removing em, dont press them og squise them. Take a dol knife and move the knife under the tick then place a finger on the tick and tilt the knife so you lift the tick and remove it plz dont wait more the 12h to remove if it sits more the 12h to 24h it have eat enough to fill it so it needs to vomit a little in you to make room for more blood and that is when you get sick . So key is remove fast and dont squise or press it so it vomits
I was reading about tick removal and they say you have to twist the tick to get them out because their head has this spiral thing like a wine bottle opener. I am glad you got that sorted out. The BRT is looking great and so does the butterfly!
Hi Nigel, I just got a BRT -- do you think it's safe to repot it now, in fall and leave it to grow indoors for the winter? I'm in NY. Perhaps I should just wait til Spring/early Summer
Cool update Nigel! That butterfly is awesome, bria collects pined butterflies I bet she will know what it is!! Too bad to hear about the tick, I found one on my dog the other day not cool man!!
One thing that will make a tick back out from its hole in you is to put tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil on it and they will back out within about 10mins
Nigel thank you for sharing! So much good information. My bonsai is about 4-6 years old…but the trunk is 1/4”. Very skinny. Is it too late to thicken? What would you recommend for thickening the trunk? I repotted in September and pruned last November. It is looking great as far as leaves (May be due for another pruning in CA). Any information is so appreciated!!
Hello Richelle, I would just keep repeating the process of letting the shoots grow long and then pruning them back! I will take about ten years before you get a nice thick trunk!
How do I get my cutting to grow faster once it has roots? Will putting it into the ground or a large pot help the trunk thicken and more leaves and height start up?
Hi Nigel! Sorry to hear about the tick :( I am just wondering if there are similarities between the acacia trees we find in South Africa and the Brazilian rain tree?
Ouch ouch, I learned in scouts a million years ago that to rid yourself of those guys lite a match and then blow it out and apply the still hot match to the body of Tic who will then hopefully back out of the infected area. This might still be Red Cross procedure maybe check but yes , Tics suck.
Ticks are totally annoying also here in Sweden who carries both Lyme disease but also TBE (Tick-borne encephalitis) which you must take vaccine for, as antibiotics don't work. Besides that it is wonderful too see all growth and development in yer gardne as usual ☺
Be extremely careful whwn removing ticks, don't start panicking. Don't put alcohol on ticks, it will make them throw up. Most likely someone in the street will have a tick remover, try to ask around. If they don't either go get one, ask ur doctor if he has one, or... try tweezers. When using tweezers, don't twist and turn, try to grab the head or neck directly, slowly pull continuously.
Tick happened to me as well, sure enough the result of collecting trip to the mountains. I caught it before it embedded itself, just a pure luck. Word of warning: it was a Deer Tick and wherever deer are you can be sure there will be ticks. 100%.

Love it when you speaks to animals Nigel.! So compassionate and passionate. Genuine nice guy. 👍🏼

Hopefully even better Jay!!! This tree really has grown over the last 4 years!!

Oh heck! Ticks are nasty. I hope you’re ok.
I’ve not seen a rain tree before so enjoyed watching your work on it 😮
That’s a really cool tree Nigel! Especially liking my the leaves. Brilliant video thanks 😊

That's unfortunate to hear about the tick. They're pretty bad this time of the year around me too. The BRT is looking nice! Stay safe, everyone!
17:34 - we all knew that NIgel was a disney princess, but this proves it. Next he's gonna start singing about trees.
Funny, I do have the rabbits in the backyard too!
What a beautiful butterfly!

That´s a nice tree Nigel.

Sorry to hear that, Nigel. Wishing you well!
Very beautiful tree, I really enjoying your pruning!
put petroleum jelly on the tick and it falls out after a day, the jelly smothers it!
Wow, good to know. Thank you for sharing 👏

Nice and proportionate. I plan to work mine soon too.

Awesome thanks!!!!

Stunning tree. I see a twin to your serissa in this tree in the future. Do you have 2 rain trees now?
Yes, I have the one from the workshop also, it's a different style with more branches off a single trunk.
Suddenly got really itchy when you told the story .. :D Glad to hear they got it all out tho !
I have gotten Lyme infection once. I didn't see the tick at all, just the typical itchy red spot where I had been bitten. I have not had any luck with the BRT. Had two and lost both. Any suggestions.

When ever i prune the branch it die back. Can you please describe where to cut the branch to avoid die back
Tree is looking great and the cuttings should root well for you.
Thanks Tom, some cool weather coming up, a low of 5 C or 41 F tomorrow night!

When I was a kid, my mother would use colored fingernail polish, not clear. Paint them and in a minute they back out. Job done, back out side.
Thanks Bob!!

Just good watering, fertilization and sunshine!
Nature making sure people don’t steal from her. Sucks you got a tick Sir Nigel.
Yikes, glad you’re ok! Lime disease is no joke. I couldn’t imagine.
Nigel, do you ever defoliate your Rain Tree??
Also, do you put root medium on the cuttings before putting in the soil?
I haven't defoliated it, but I will when I repot it next!
I haven't used root hormone.
Can you bonsai a Baobab tree?
Tick Tok :/ glad you're okay !

I Nigel how r u
Limes disease is common in deer so if there is no deer around the tics won't carry it
It’s actually spread more frequently by rodents
That property has deer. 🙁
Not necessarily so.
