This is the most beautiful Chloroleucon Tortum bonsai I've ever seen. And let me tell you guys I live in Rio and there's a couple of them literally a square from my home and some squares further there's this park just full of them... and this one is so close to the way they grow in nature. Astonishing.

Hello my friend! Just found your channel, and I love it! I have a really nice brazilian raintree as well, and was just wondering, what happens if you don't defoliate the branches? Also I may have missed the explanation, but why do you cut the thorns in half? is it just for size perspective? I trim the branches on mine when they get too long, but have never defoliated it or cut the thorns thanks, and all the best :)

Jerome-I keep coming back to rewatch this video every time I need some inspiration for my own BRT. I just finished removing some out of place branches and I added a number of guide wires to pull some unruly ones into place. How long does it usually take for BRT branches to take a set so you can then remove the wires? My only problem with my BRT is each fall when I bring it inside it starts shedding leaflets and continues doing so until the following spring when it is time to go back outside, which of course drives my wife crazy. I am considering this coming fall/winter moving it to the basement and keeping it in a plastic tent under grow lights. Now that you are up in Georgia where do you keep yours in winter? Thanks for these videos and I hope the bonsai supplies are selling well! BTW if you ever get up to Asheville let me know and I’ll show you my collection-Larry
Hey Larry! Thank you for your kind words🙏🌳 I had to sell my brt when I moved up to Georgia because it wouldn’t fit inside my greenhouse. Here’s a little trick I do with my Tropicals which you can do as well. I defoliate them when I bring them inside in the fall so they can acclimate easier and then defoliate them again in the spring to acclimate them to the outside. That way you don’t get leaf drop or yellow leaves.

Just 3 minutes into the video and I am already wondering how long did it take you to defoliate the whole tree and remove the thorns. I guess at least 6 hours since there are four hands at work. Sometimes you just have to put in work and not think too much and focus on the fulfilling outcome. But the first couple of leaves are a little bit discouraging lol. Anyway awesome job my fellow countryman!!!
Hi Vinh, I think it actually only took us 4 hours. We made sure to drink some wine and relax while defoliating and trimming the thorns. Great time to forget yourself,lol!

Would love to have one not sure how they would handle the winter in n.y. i just lost a bougenvillea which sucked and i got it from florida. One question do u have anchors drilled into the pot at the bottom if not how do u tie them down . Quick tip if ur gonna create a mess take some paper towels damp them and put them around ur tree easy clean up just saw that from ryan on mirai

Hi, Thank you for your feedback! I would just do minor work and remove all the things you definitely don't need, like inside branches and bar branches.

Hi Jerome how are you Sir! I have few rain tree and how often you think I should water it during indoor winter season? My room temperature I always have it around 72-75F/22C the most during winter. My trees are located next to the windows and gets the sun from E SE S plus the bright of the sunroof window in my room!! I normally water them once or twice a day during summer time outdoors depending how hot the temperatures gets outside. Thank You! You guys have a great Day!! 😊
I do have another question and cant seem to find the answer. I appreciate your help! :) I know brazilian rain trees should be repotted in mid summer, but i just recieved mine and its in soil from the nursery. I plan to keep it indoors for winter, could i repot it in bonsai soil faster draining more suitable for the tree if its kept inside? Just worried about potential root rot. Thank you!!!!
Hi, I suggest if you keep it indoors all year, defoliate the tree and do a full repotting now, and just keep it warm. If you only keep it indoors for overwintering, do a slip potting now. Use a bigger pot and slip it in without disturbing the root system and fill in the edges with fresh bonsai soil. Still do a repotting in mid-summer.

That is surprising to hear usually, they bounce back immediately. Did you maybe do it at the wrong time of the year?

is there a rationale behind removing the leaves in that fashion instead of just clipping off the shoots with scissors?

Hey Alexander, Tropical trees are best worked in the summer time. That includes defoliating, trimming and repotting

Lovely tree. Is there is a thornless variant of the raintree? I know that related trees like the honey and black locusts come in thornless variants.

I'm working on the thornless version in Ghana. It's growing quite fast in this part of the world. I'm ground growing them at the moment.

Touch the soil Roger. If it is dry an inch under the top soil you can water it. I would try to keep it moisy

I wired the outer tips twice but that's it, the rest was all grown clip and grow and guide wires

That is a gorgeous specimen but two days of defoliating/dethorning, that's a lot of work. You should do a video on bonsai for lazy people. 😉
