I love how you always discuss the 'essence of driving' - and do it in a considered and artful way. Very refreshing in numbers-heavy era we're living in... Great to see another video!
I was genuinely surprised at how good it sounded blasting through the countryside. There is a rawness that I wasn't expecting! Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the support.
This car seems absolutely perfect! Abbey Motorsport did a great job. Though I have read about some issues on the HKS supercharger, which puts me off that kit. Hopefully the turbo is much more reliable. Enjoy your turbo'd 86, and thanks for the video
I have the SBD turbo on my 17 BRZ. I love the sound and feel, but good god, destroyed my stock clutch so quickly. Southbend stage 2 is in the mail though!
Really loved the video, especially since I plan on getting the HKS turbo myself very soon. But i must ask, how were you able to keep the boost at 9 psi? I asked HKS-USA about the kit and they said the lowest boost the kit can go on is 12psi. I wouldn't mind that, but I don't want to run E85 for the most part.
Thanks for the support! I will check with the owner but his Tuner (Abbey Motorsport in the UK) built and setup the HKS Turbo kit, so I would say the PSI was set on the rolling road to find a nice balance for reliability for daily road use.
I feel like the BRZ/86 needs 50% of it's mechanical parts replaced when going to forced induction, to retain original reliability over the life of the car. Is my feeling reflective of reality?
@@exothermal.sprocket As someone who has taken apart an FA20, I can say that they are reliable boosted on stock internals, to a point. The main point being the high static compression ratio and rods. As long as you keep the boost low the effective compression (google it) can be the same or slightly lower (for reliability) as other factory boosted car that have relatively high boost and low static compression ratios. Some people like risking high boost, so the rod that supports all that high boost and high static compression snaps.

@@itzgeebz reliability is good touch wood! My tuners Abbey Motorsport put a lot of parameters in to make sure the boost comes in as "tamely" as possible. @@nvl2691 I'd say you better off starting with something else, it's a fantastic drivers car but these cars from the factory are designed to be tail happy. As a first car it may catch you off guard. Plus if you make any mistakes like curbing the wheels or scratching the body you won't be as fussed if you have an older car than one of these!
@@alexpreston4588 hey alex was just referencing this video again cause it’s my favorite exhaust note. was thinking of swapping to the ark grip from my nameless cat back on my brz but my setup will be JDL catless uel headers with jdl ultra quiet front pipe. do you think it’ll still sound good?
Did you do the install yourself? if so how long did it take roughly? If not how much did it cost to get it installed? Been thinking about slapping a turbo setup into my 2019 TRD 86 and just wondering about cost, time, and effort to do it. Thank you!!
I will check with the owner but the whole install was completed by Abbey Motorsport. I don't know the cost but I know it wasn't the cheapest option. He liked the HKS kit because they have a long proven history in performance tuning and with this being a daily, he wanted some confidence!
That's s.c power on your car. You want at least 300 hub on a turbo! That's where the real fun happens and hatch's won't laugh at you. Your next step in internals definitely.
Full list of powertrain and exhaust mods along with cost please!
I'm sit here waiting xD
Thank you for your excellent take on modifying your 86. Subscribed and liked.

Which version of the hks sup? V2? V3?
@@crankypipo i don't think it matters which version as they both use the same centrifugal supercharger I believe

Awesome exhaust note with the equal length manifold hks uses i wasn't sure it would sound great and NF sound track is fire 🔥

Probably by replacing the wastegate actuator with a softer spring rate actuator.
