    I did a beginner day with AJ Catanzaro last summer when he was in Calgary. He said something very casually, but it stuck hard with me. Many of the students in the class were afraid to hit the jump fast enough to easily downside the landing, and as a result were actually gassing on the face, preloading and pulling up to get enough height and distance to clear the smallish tabletop we were working on. AJ said the objective with almost any jump on most tracks is actually to jump as SHORT as possible. Obviously that requires more speed, but in the end is safer, and faster. As I started to think about that, it changed my whole perspective and technique on jump faces. The result was that I was able to jump 2 jumps on my local track with ease that I thought I'd never be able to do. I was jumping lower, but with more speed up the jump face, and neutral (or off) throttle. Your explanation was very similar to what he said, and the result is actually safer and more confidence inspiring. When you start soaking up the rebound, the bike gets more predictable and stops doing weird kicks etc off the jump. Great video as always, I've really enjoyed this series of videos you've done lately!

      Thanks! That is a good point you brought up that I didn't mention, which is that the bike will be more predictable off the gas, especially if there are bumps or cups in the jump face. Glad that AJ's advice helped you out! - Chase

    I always thought they did that just to look cool. I had no idea there was a very practical reason to do it. I’m even more impressed now that I know it’s an actual technique used to maintain speed and put power back on the ground faster.

    always want to find the lowest part of the lip to go off as well as you can see the right side of that jump has a lower lip and one part with a rut which is good

    Make a post like this for dual sport guys, how to jump/cross smaller ridges on gravel roads etc.
    And yeah engine sound on this would have been good additional info.

    I can scrub on a mountain bike, and i can soak up takeoffs on a dirtbike really well, but i cant quite scrub it out sideways. I only just now got access to a decent track with maintained jumps, before now I've never hit a real motocross jump on my bike other than some that hadn't been maintained in a few years or the one out in the desert behind where i live that hasnt been touched by a tractor since the 90s. But i think im just starting to get a mini scrub going, i am also on a ktm 500 dualsport so probably not the best bike for it, but i bought it where i am now because i knew id be doing more street riding than dirt, although my 350 dualsport at home would only be a bit better for motocross.

    Another trick if you aren't at the skill level to scrub, give a good stomp through the suspension early, so it is all the way at the top of your rebound a few feet before the lip of the jump. This effectively means your suspension is at the top of the stroke, with the least spring preload, so is in a better position to absorb some of the lip, so it doesn't act as so much of a kick.

    By chop the throttle do you mean just coast the jump face? Typically I see people endo when they let off the gas

    • @zayneriess634
      @zayneriess634 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly that just let of the throttle and push threw the jump sort of makes the bike go nose down a little more but if done right it works and is very easy

      Coming from Mountainbikes, it's how I always used to jump as a beginner as I didn't know better. First thing: Only do this, as the video says, when you're coming in too hot to hold steady throttle. Chop the throttle. Shift your weight a little more towards the back. Be prepared to grab a good hand of throttle mid air in case you notice a tendency to endo. That'll bring you rear wheel down, a gear higher than usual helps, too. And remember: Even a front wheel landing is better than over jumping ;)

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I do mean coast off the jump face. If you watch fast riders, unless it is a jump the requires it, riders will get off the gas just before leaving the jump face. There are many jumps where you need to give it gas off the lip to clear it which is fine. But This does two things, it allows the rider to carry more speed into the jump and will help keep the bike lower on takeoff. Staying in a taller gear will help prevent an endo due to less engine brake. Practicing this on a jump with a more mellow jump face will also make it less intimidating. - Chase

    I can scrub decently now but I have a hard time scrubbing on steeper jump faces… should you keep your body further back on the bike when scrubbing steeper faces? I always try to scrub just a little on a steep face and my front end drops to much

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  ปีที่แล้ว

      Some riders just learn how to do it faster. I know some riders that race pro nationals that I can't whip or scrub that great. Some riders are just more comfortable scrubbing than others. - Chase

    So I naturally started doing this somehow but I want to start leaning the bike over and it’s a little unnerving because I’ve had bad rebounds on faces before. Are you still absorbing the preload when you lean it over or do you just let the suspension kick out and “slide” off the lip of the jump

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      When you start to lean the bike over off the jump face, you have to absorb less and less since the suspensions is rebounding out and away vs up into you.

    I thought if I don't gas out the jump that I would nose dive. With good momentum I can chop the power before I get to base of jump?? So far I have better time jumping than riding track. I'm a work progress

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you carry enough speed off the jump face, you don't need to worry about doing an endo. But that is also why you do it in a taller gear if you can. The taller the gear, the less engine brake and weight being pitched forward when you leave the jump. As you're learning, try to hit all jumps in 3 gear or higher. - Chase

      sorry to hear that man. he should have mentioned that it will endo on you unless you have the combo right. the way it works as he describes is it feels more like it would if you chopped the throttle to hit an obstacle at speed, as opposed to how you would normally hit a jump where your going to get lift. you have to be going fast enough so the suspension is smacking into the face, as opposed to just rolling along over the face. the difference is in either getting a huge endo that wants to buck you, or just slamming into the face properly to where the rebound helps level the bike in the air after that. next time try it on a smaller bump, to try and get a feel for the timing of it. or just don't try it. heh.
