I'm 43, riding forest and road since I was 10. last year I wanted to learn mx. Found myself in the 3/4 zone and guilty of blipping. AJ, your tutorials are the reason why I'm now a confident jumper. Much appreciation from Australia cheers
@AjCatanzaro I also thank you much for your content! I totally understand that you need to do this for a living or else you would not have the time to. At the same time you still put out a lot of good information supporting all riders who wish to take it in and that says a lot man!! The world's moto community needs that so bad!!
Name a dude doing more for motocross than aj... he has the best technique to teach aswell hands down one of the most stylish dudes on a bike when hes not actually teaching
Jumping works when you stop being a dead sailor. You learn that by trying things in the air and sometimes crashing. There, you finally learned "how" to jump.
I wish I had this type of training when I was in my 30s. Now I’m in my 50s and I’m a better and safer jumper because of AJ’s videos. I’m no longer fearful when I approach a jump because I follow AJ’s tips.
I'm french, i'm slowly learning to jump and a friend of mine gave me a tip that has helped me a lot, to never find myself decelerating in front of a jump and going forward. The technique is to slow down when you get close to the jump and re-accelerate again when it calls. This breaks the “fear” effect and really helps you to get a good attitude once you're in the air. In any case, thanks for the advice, I'll try to apply it, but as you say, there's no point in trying to do everything at once, there's a big part of feeling involved and the secret is to put gazzzzz !
Started hitting some medium sized table tops this weekend. This vid was exactly what I needed as I have always been afraid of jumps as a mostly woods rider. The soak up technique worked perfectly. Was able to keep my head over the bars and land safely. I’m only jumping 1/3 to 1/2 of the table top but able to build confidence!
They need to make slow tracks with fun small jumps with more transition, and let the super stars keep their national race tracks. This way we could just suck and be happy instead of teaching old dogs to get out of their own way.
I was living in the bounce zone for a while until some kid younger than me. I was 9 at the time and he was like 6 years old. He told me that I jumped like a baby bird. lol. Since that day I started to clear all the jumps. It's harsh when it comes from a kid that is much smaller and younger than you.
The most important step before doing anything, get your race sag dialed. Then understand how rebound and compression effect the bike. Once your bike is consistent, jumping becomes easy.
@@AjCatanzarojumps at speed my rear end drifts out to the side and I find it hard to correct. I feel like I’m at the mercy of the bike. I’m 230lb on stock yz450 suspension. I know I may need stiffer springs but for now should I increase compression and rebound. My sag is around 100mm. Could you do a video on how to make corrections in the air?
Great information!! As always! Thanks for sharing to make us safer and better riders!!! I just realized I'm a 3/4 jumper on the big boys and have always said I'm great at casing the jumps if needed (thanks to you!!), but I would like to clear them one day, so just a little more speed on the way in and I think I'm golden!!! Let's go!!
Wish you had some classes in Korea. I'm in the 3/4 zone, drives me crazy because I KNOW what I'm doing wrong, my throttle hand just won't listen to my head.
Lmnt is awesome. Can’t believe you use that too. I’m a sanitation worker in NYC. In summer I sweat out all my water on the route. That stuff saves me from cramping up. Worth the money.
Wish this video existed 15 years ago and I was able to watch it then. I was always to cowardly to try and clear large and even a lot of the time small jumps.
Hopefully one day you will come to Montana and I can attend one of these classes with my son . I know we would get SO much out of a session with you ! Especially my son .
Problem is jumps sort of close out of turns. Especially on a 2 stroke. If your corner speed is not there, then you have to accelerate harder. I find even trying this in higher gear on a 2 stroke scary. I've had so many air wheelies, swabs, etc on jumps with 2 strokes, as a vet novice rider. I have a very deep ingrained fear of jumping. I have switched to a 150sx instead of tc 250. That 250 is wild, I finally went to soft map, yellow PV spring, and PV turned in almost halfway. Still really just too much bike for my level.
Idk how big you think big is, but most jumps are 3rd gear 3/4 throttle in my experience. Better to overjump a bit than to bounce. This past weekend I overjumped a 50+ ft long 30ft high step up with a steep landing twice, with no issues, if I bounced it that probably would’ve been catastrophic. Realize that most jumps you only need to go around 35mph to clear. Some bigger ones require 45+. I highly recommend following someone around your speed that is doing the jump you want to try and go ever so slightly faster than them. Also once you commit the first time you need to be 100% committed or you will case it. I lived in the 3/4 zone for many medium sized jumps (mainly doubles because of bad crashes trying to commit to them and not giving it enough speed) when I was racing 65s and 85s. Now I’m on a 250 I got the balls to commit and it’s such a breath of fresh air. Once you do it the first time you realize it was that easy the whole time and you were just in your head about it.
Maybe someone can advise me. I am a newbie, 46 years old, honda crf450r. I keep my throttle as consistent as I can over the crest of the ramp, but it still feels like the bike drops like a stone below me, causing me to almost go over the top. Should I increase my throttle a bit?
I tried to remain smooth on the throttle and panic blipped on a jump a bit outside of my skill zone last week. I immediately cut throttle in the air when I felt the butterflies as my feet bucked off the pegs and ended in a handlebar-to-ribcage endo. It wasn't too awful, but I feel it was a great learning experience. LMFAO
Taller gear for less experienced riders will almost always be more safe 😁 don’t think of the taller gear as more speed (although it can be if you want it to be), the taller gear is meant to create smoother & more controllable power 👍🏼

Wish I’d had this type of instruction 40 yrs ago. Last week I jumped my first 90 footer in more than 20 yrs! THANK YOU, AJ!
Amazing!

Thank you so much.
AJ is awesome. I tell all my riding friends to watch his videos. When he races next year will definitely be rooting for him.
This is hands down the best video on jumping I’ve seen. I live in the bounce zone. Ready to start clearing the local 80 foot table top every lap.

my son is a beginner motocross racer just learning how to jump and I must say your videos are super helpful. Thank you for posting
Thank you so much! Thats what its all about!
I watched this probably 20x over to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Definitely going to put it into practice this weekend! Thx for all the advice 🤙🏼

Can't agree more buddy 😢
I say this all the time, it’s hard to get better with such crazy supercross type tracks without getting hurt

Oof definitely hits different.
I would really appreciate it if you would show some of these guys practicing and then the coaching that you give them that would help me a lot

Less confidence means taller gear? I'll be hitting everything in 17th then. 😉
😂😂😝
I've lived in that 3/4 zone my entire MX life. Excellent video. See you in MA on the 20th.
We’ll get you out of that zone on the 20th 😁 see you then!
He explains things well. I’m in the garage relaxing getting my dirt bike out the shop this morning.

Hey AJ just tried to order and that discount code doesn’t seem to work
So how do I get out of the 3/4 zone? And not go that bit too much that I OJ, particularly on big jumps?

AJ bring motocross back to high schools. You'd make a good highschool mx coach
LMNT really is the best hydration out there. Everyone at our house drinks at least one every single day. Your skin will actually feel softer.
Bro, you were at NJMP FOD !? I’ve ridden there a lot, my home track. Nice Tracks!👍
Gears, Clutch etc. my Surron doesn't have those old things anymore. What do?
You'll hit puberty soon, don't worry.
Its not the jumps its the grooves going up the face that scares me
We have several videos on Rutted jump faces on the Moto Academy TH-cam channel.
Eyes forward and up helps you pick your line an gives you a mental picture of what's under you cause you've already seen it cause your looking forward
20 mins from my home and I didn’t know lol
Gosh darnit! Next time 😁

Sounds like your losing speed up the ramp so u actually need a little more juice prolly
landed on my head a lot
Too bad I couldn't join the class when he visited Athens /Greece!!!
PLEASE come again!!!
PS: Never change the end title music!!!
Would love to come back!
Videographer 5:35 how did you miss the palm branch laying in the shot…?

It happens fast for sure.
I go so slow up jump faces my bike bogs and i just barely make it! Yep I need to go faster, my brain just won't let me!
Stoked that you’re sponsored by LMNT. I love that stuff. It is amazing for rehydrating after intense exercise.
Learned jumping on a bmx; not all of those skills transfer
Some pros will even use that suspension spring from blipping to send themselves to the moon on a jump so yeah I’d like to avoid doing that to myself 😂
You know it!
Excellent 👍
Know what flavor of lmnt is not good? chocolate.
How do I say your last name
Can’t get passed the fear of the 3/4 zone(1/2 zone)…

wtf are you doing in the caption photo
👍
Can I get a refund for class at toutle mx? Because you just gave everything away for free. JK.
😂😂
😁😁😁😁 not until I get a chance to ride your KDX 😝

Telling Noobs to go up a gear or two off jumps.. hmm?? Haha

I get it.. but also might cause a beginner to bog out. Or god forbid stall it on the face of the jump.
@@RVmotoTravel stall it while moving?
