I disagree about being a guard dog, if you broke into my home, dressed as a tennis ball, you are done for. Otherwise,Sammy just met his new best friend.

I grew up with Golden. She was my buddy; we hung out in her later years. If I had nothing going on, all I had to say was, "Amber. Putt-Putt!" That phrase would make her day, and we would go on road trips. One time, we were in Old Town Alexandria, right on the Potomac River. We sat on a dock and she really wanted to jump in. I said No, very dirty water. One of the hardest days of my life was when I took her to the vet; she had cancer. I will always my buddy. Oh yeah, the world's worst watchdog. We had robbery and I am conviced she gave them a tour of the house. Great Channel by the way.

@@gracegauger3071 The ONLY times I have EVER seen a Golden get mean was when they perceived a real danger to family. I've seen mild mannered goldens square off ready for a death match with mountain lions (thankfully it didn't come to that)... get between the kid and the lion. Threats like that are the only times I've seen a Golden flip the 'Cujo' switch.

I have a golden retriver so I think I can share my experience( I have not watched the video)
    + They shed a lot
+ They are way too friendly with stranger
    Reasons to get them
    + Very active and playful
    + Cute 🥰
    + Smart, easy to train
+ Go well with most people , protective for kids and owner.
Also if you worried about hair they are two thing you can get as live saver
+ A deshedder tool( like furminator or hank )
+ A tool to remove hair from clothes
    : Both are avaliable online
( Sorry for my bad english it's not my native language)
    Edit:
    Just wanted to share something
So as you know dog treat one family member as their owner. mainly whom they found dominating in the family
So I take care of my dog but I recently noticed my dog respects or obeys my dad much more than me.
It's not a bad thing but ya i feel jealous 😂
Edit2:- so my golden is now 2 year old and I have noticed some more changes
    1) He has become more smarter and has better senses now.
    2) I noticed now he barks before someone actually rings the bell of my house and actually guards the place ( nothing aggressive tho, he is still playfull with most guests and strangers)
    3) He start barking 2 min before my dad actually reaches home.

Depends on your definition of “guard”. My indoor living golden alerts me to a stranger in the yard with her bark. I do not want an attack dog that freaks out the mailman or Fed Ex driver. She also scares the deer away from the flowers and bushes. Fur, yes, BUT I have found short coarse hair is much harder to clean up. A Golden’s fur is fluffy.
Yes, she loves everyone, loves to walk, run and play and is a great night time sleeper.

Also I didn't like waking up to the sound of panting and hot breath in my face because for some reason he would watch me sleep.

If I was sad he’d come running to lick my tears and lift my chin up with his head looking around like “ Who Did it ! “ I miss him . But now I’m starting over with a 9 week old very mischievous character named Maximus. I’m in love already Fay 2 !

The bigger they get, the more they eat, as long as you have a good vet who can help you with food measurements. Get a GR, you will have a friend for as long as s/he lives.

Though the loving part is true but not as true as you say with my pups. My dogs are over protective of me and my family. When they meet people they get excited but wait for permission to say hi, like us interacting with the people. This is not every Golden but it is a trait in my pups.

My ex step mom bought a golden when we were little. I now realize how many mistakes were made.
    1) She was confined to the backyard. I used to sneak out just to hang out in her dog house.
    2) The dog was our (the children) responsability. Even tough we did not beg for her. So she wasn't going for walks as mush as she needed. Etc.
I loved her so much but now I realice how much she must have sufer. My ex step mom abuse not only afected me and my sisters. She abused that dog too.
Now that I am 23 I adopted a Goden retriever greyhound mix. BEST MIX EVER. She is the sweetest and friendlist baby, and she is a great guardian and couch potato. Now that I am an adult I know I can take care of this baby fluff, but that made me feel bad for Withey (rip).

My golden is ABSOLUTELY amazing, not because I trained him well or anything, for whatever he knows all the credits go to him, literally. At this point I could tell you with 100% belief that he speaks every language in the world. I have 2 cats and he definitely knows how to be playful yet gentle with them, it’s amazing. However, I got him during the pandemic and we weren’t really able to socialize him much that resulted him into being over excited meeting people and literally jumping on them. He’s 1 year and 4 months old, I hope I can still teach him how to be calm around anything new.

He’s right ! My 6 month old Golden Retriever Maximus is my Master. He’s spoiled rotten and has temper tantrums when he doesn’t have my full attention. He hates when I talk on the phone and upon answer a call ( I’m not a phone person so my calls are usually business or important) he loses his mind and starts acting out ; therefore taking advantage of me being distracted . He starts to eat , chew , anything he can get his 🐾 on . My first golden 20 years ago was nothing like this . But he is also a joy . So loving and They can be Proterozoic I disagree on that point . But since the passing of my 20 year old Daughter, he’s always there to lick my tears away & Jump in my lap bringing me his favor toy . He doesn’t realize how Big he is . They grow very quickly & are the sweetest with children ; however they are very needy and demanding.

I have a Golden Retriever/English Bulldog mix, and YES, they shed SO much, and they DEFINITELY love the water a LOT. Sadly my baby girl does NOT in ANY way care to do ANY retrieving, but she DEFINITELY loves agility, doing tricks, swimming etc. even if she HAS the lazy, laid back couch potato energy level of the English Bulldog most of the time.
She DEFINITELY loves everyone, and is definitely not a watchdog or a guarding dog in ANY way, but that is fine. She wasn't bought for that purpose, and she is SO lovely to take with me to the psychiatric care facility/home where I work BECAUSE she loves everyone and is so good with the people that live there.
That being said, next time I would LOVE more of a guarding breed, as it would definitely be welcome if my dog was less likely to invite in intruders with lots of kisses. At the same time though, I love that my friends and parents are able to come and go when I am not there and need someone to take her for a walk, feed her etc., and I WANT a dog that can come to work with me and offer the people I work with the same kind of love and joy as my girl does now, and... I don't know that I can find that in a guarding breed type dog. Is there a guarding breed you could recommend I look into that has a low-energy laid back attitude, will be loving and kind to people it knows - to the point that they can come take it for walks and feed it etc. when I am not there -, yet will still be protective if strangers it doesn't know try to break in etc.?

i really want a golden retriever. I had a german shepherded named jerry. he was very sweet with my family, i loved him so much. but he became very territorial and aggressive to strangers. one day my friend was coming over, and i warned her that he may bark, but he had never bitten anyone. we got out of the car and he immediately ran and attacked her. i felt AWFUL. after that it was hell trying to keep him in check. we were trying to find somewhere we could get him trained, but there aren’t many things like that in my area. he progressively got worse and eventually even attacked ME. so we couldn’t keep him. i’m terrified of big dogs now. i still have nightmares about him. my family is looking into getting another dog and i don’t think i would be comfortable with anything other than a golden retriever so i’m going to try really hard to convince them

Desperately wanted a dog for a long time after losing my last dog almost 11 years ago. My first dog was a Golden, (As far as I know because I was 5), named Buttercup, but we had to give her up because 4 person family and she chewed up hoses. (Two working parents raising two kids didn't have time to train her not to.) I'm sure we had her inside, but I can't remember how much. We've never been a family to leave dogs outside 24/7, but we may have left her out in the backyard during the day while my parents were working to avoid inside accidents. I was there when they gave her away, had her from a puppy, blah blah.
Then I researched and saw that they don't make good guard dogs. Our last two were great watchdogs, my boy Wiley was ready to attack any man that came near me (sharpei/ACD mix.) Anyway, probably never getting a dog because we have wood floors and I'm the only one that wants a dog. We're also overrun with indoor/outdoor cats, so not the best fit for a golden or most dogs. Not sure why I wrote all this on a nearly year old vid. I get really word-y online. There's a chance Buttercup may have been a lab, but I talked about her a lot at one point, so she was probably a Golden. So, anyway, my whole point was that if I could get another dog, I'd want a golden mix with some guarding instincts (if such a dog exists). Can't do purebreds anyway, rarely had good experiences with owning them.

They can't be for everyone, but they certainly are for me. My best friend is a Golden (not hyperbole, this dog really is my best friend, a constant buddy and adopted family member). Some of the best people I've known in my life were Goldens. For the right person, better dogs simply don't exist. I actually warn potential Golden owners with some advice that touches on your points, like 'outside only dog'. I phrase it as 'Forget 'pet'. Goldens are actually not good pets at all. What they are, are adopted family members and friends. If you want a buddy that thinks of you as family, get a Golden, if you want a pet, get a parrot.' The NEED to be a part of the family. They are human focused in the extreme and all they want is to be a part of the family. People that get this 'family vs. pet' distinction will do better with Goldens in my opinion.
My buddy turned 15 in March. Still going strong. Funny thing is... he never outgrew the 'puppy phase'. 15 years old, and still just a huge puppy.
I don't like thinking about 'after', but the simple truth is that he is not my first Golden, and certainly won't be the last. I don't know if it's that Goldens mesh my personality so well, or if it's that I am somehow more compatible with them... or both... or... all I know is that Goldens have been nothing but amazing dogs in my life, and I've never had it easier training or even just getting along with a dog than I do with Goldens. At this point, I just accept that I am a Golden Retriever kind of human. I love Labs, Healers, pitties... so many great dogs I've known. But Goldens and I just click the easiest it seems. True when I was 10, true at 45. So, I've decided on nothing but Goldens from here on out. It's just too easy, and too rewarding for me to stray off of them again.
If you want a canine family member, can deal with the shedding, don't need a defense dog, and can give them the time and attention they need... kind hard to go wrong with these pups. With a few asterisks like you point out here, they more or less ace any metric you want for a dog.
In the interest of bias disclosure, this message was typed with a Golden curled up at my feet...

Agree 100%! I love all dogs but golden retrievers are brilliant. We’ve had retrievers for 26 years currently have a 3 year old and his 14 weeks half sister. I couldn’t imagine not having a Goldie in my life they’re so gentle kind and friendly and love you unconditionally. Yes they do shed but part of our routine is a good brush before bed each night, it keeps the dogs looking beautiful and collects some of the loose hair in the brush. It broke my heart when we lost the other two but I am so grateful for the time we had with them, first one 10 years then second one nearly 13 years. Absolutely great dogs! A bit of loose fur around the house is a small price to pay for the love of a Golden Retriever 😍

*DISCLAIMER* I HAVEN'T WATCHED THE VIDEO YET!!
My golden retriever is basically what most people would call- A PSYCHO.
I love him, honestly, but he does bite a lot and attack me when I wear baggy clothes. He really loves my mom, and there are 4 people in my family if u count my dog, and if you want to see who he loves the most, I'll come dead last. And the thing is, I GIVE HIM A LOT OF LOVE. I give him treats, play with him regularly, make eye-contact, and always try to make him feel better!! But he just won't listen. We sent him to puppy school to try to get his behaviour in check, but even that didn't help. He is not at all easy to train and gets really over-exited. He's turning a year old in about a month, so I think this might be all puppy behavior but if it's not could you please tell me? How can I get him to listen to me from time to time??

It’s been 11 months and I hope you’re ok with your golden now, but one thing you definitely need to remember is that they can sense your emotions VERY well. If by chance youre very angry or anxious while handling them even though you might try to hide it they’ll know. They LOVE leaders, you have to lead them not just play or feed them you gotta give them commands. And it’s not “sit” “stay” “down” it starts with the small things like while you’re on a walk, don’t let him walk infront of you, make him walk beside you. Don’t just give him free food, make them work for it and then very generously praise them, they love to please their owners, there should be times when you treat them like a dog but there should also be times when you should treat them like your best friend, talk to them no matter they understand it or not they’ll read your expressions and body language.

My golden is a rescue who bit children and adults at two houses before I got her. She wants to jump on and lick some strangers and barks at others. She only likes about 1 in 10 dogs and either avoids or tries to fight the rest. She sees cats as game to chase. She loudly barks at anything she sees or hears near the house. She obviously had abuse issues at one or both of her other homes, but she's great with me. Very affectionate and playful. Their hair does get everywhere, but it's hypoallergenic.
