Goldens are worth all the effort. The bond they establish -- the love with the family... it's like nothing else.
Very true, I adore our two goldens. They're two derpy, hyper active eating machines and they definitely spice up my life. Their derpiness is in stark contrast to their intelligence, not just learning tricks and such, they can be really manipulating and devious.

I would say 2hrs of attention and exercise is an understatement. 😄 My golden always wants to play and is with me 24/7, no joke. Grooming is a lot but if you learn to do it on your own it can be a thing you do for them. Shes got so much personality and is so smart. I talk to her in sentences and she understands. She’s the best and I can’t imagine life without her. ❤️
I trained my golden puppy as soon as he came home at six weeks. I spend a lot of time walking him and socializing him at dog parks. He’s a real angel! 11 years old and going strong.

Don't get one if you want a pet. They are actually horrible pets. Only bring a Golden into your life if you are willing to accept them as a friend and adopted family member. Horrible pets, but one of the best friends and addition to your family you will find.
Goldens are family. Not pets.
My Golden was my buddy, we spent as much time together as was possible and we both wanted more anyway. It's not an exaggeration to call him my best friend. He was never a pet... But he was family.
We adopted 2 Goldens a year ago. An 11 year old father and his 5 year old daughter. Their owner had a stroke and was unable to care for them any longer. They are English creams and a wonderful addition to our lives.
This video should be titled 10 reasons you should not get a dog. Nothing you say here doesn't apply to any other dogs. Plus other breeds are actually more expensive (bigger and more rare) and more work as in more stubborn and active. But you are raising great points here.
Have you had a Golden? And have you had other dogs? Because I have had all types of dogs including goldens and 2 lb Chihuahuas and Goldens are THE most time consuming dog there is. The only person who can tell me different is someone who has an Aussie or a Toller or Corso. I can tell you for sure that my Golden wants more attention, playtime and exercise than any other breed, and I have worked in dog rescue and met hundreds of dogs. Goldens top the list. As for grooming they are in the top 5 most intensive grooming needed on a regular basis.

My Golden retriever is very sweet and smart. It didn’t take long to train her. She was the 1st big dog I had so of course there was more to work with but once I figured it out she did too. I don’t regret getting her and would probably get another. Especially since I know what to expect.

Honestly getting 2 works a lot better. My golden was overweight then we got a puppy and he got in shape quickly. They play and rest with each other most of the day and the bond is so special. Downside: I only have two hands and getting work done with 1 is hard. Overall they understand we can’t always pet them. My first golden passed so now it is on my younger English retriever to bond this new English retriever.

My golden has suffered constant yeast infections in her ears because she loves to swim in our pool. It’s heartbreaking the face she makes if we try to get in without her so we take her to the vet constantly. The vet had to actually have the gunk in her ears cultured so he could tailor make an antibiotic/antifungal for her. And we do clean her ears everyday but they just drain fluid.
Awe, poor pup!! BUT it sounds like you’re doing everything you can for her and your vet sounds outstanding!!! GOOD JOB ! and yes, that sad look they get, oh my heart just can’t take it. 🫠
Are you using the vet's ear wash? If you are just wiping away the stuff in the upper ears, that's not doing anything to fix it. There are great videos on how to flush ears on YT, make sure you look them up. You need to actually flush the canal, not wipe away the upper gunk, to get them really clean.
@@goldenretrievermom7945 yes, we flush her ears with a special ear wash for the last three years. She shakes that gunk out everyday. She also had a growth in her ear that we had surgically removed and she’s had problems ever since.
@@jenniferpetty5238 oh good I'm glad to hear you take good care of her! Poor baby with the growth! I have heard Goldens who have that type of thing can continue to have issues but I hope your girl is healed up soon and the special wash works well!
Just my two cents but using Apple Cider Vinegar with water and on a daily schedule from initial irritation was a bit of a barrier.
They seem so so sweet Only they are big I don’t think I could handle it but they are so adorable
I have just gotten a yellow lab puppy, similar but love her. You could also say the positives downer guy.

Yes
1. They are expensive - grooming , vet , health care , food ~ 2000 Dollars
2. Heavy Dogs - Drawbacks Everything is more expensive Bed, higher dosage at vet , Carrier when you will travel , toys .. exercise , need more space
3. Busy People or corporate job or time consuming routine? Golden Retriever require a lot of time and attention.
4. They need lots of Training. Big Dog require more treats = more expense AGAIN !
5. They need lot of attention. They SHED a lot. covers everything at house. Hence, You need more time devotion.
6.Needs lot of GROOOMING. Bath every month if they get dirty then more. > More money,time. Ears trap more water hence they needs more ear cleaning else pay more at vet.
7. They have Tons of Energy. 1 hour exercise per day. Fetch makes them more angry ( Read up about their evolution )
8. Extra Mouthy - They were bred to carry birds by hunters in Ancient Times. They chew everything. They have big teeths. Put mouth in everything
9. They are Mischievous - They steal everything. Remote, monitor cables, shoes,socks,gloves and hide them somewhere. It gets annoying as well.
Fetch makes mine more tired after a few hours
so it's more like "don't get a bigger dog" than "don't get a GR"
My golden wasn't a table climber/jumper. If I told him, "No," he either never did it again (like getting on the couch) or he'd look at me first and all I had to do was raise my eyebrows. In fact, he'd sometimes start to walk somewhere, slowly, and look at me and, if I raised my eyebrows, he'd turn around and go back to wherever he was before. Hap's been dead 40 years and I still miss him. He was even awesome when he was a pup and I took him to obedience school....where he would pick up on the other dogs who went first, during a period when I was working many hours an day and just couldn't work with him that much. I should add, when he was 6 weeks old (when we got him), he refused to pee or poop in the house...my wife and I were up a lot, walking him!!

THIS RIDICULOUS - I BOUGHT A GOLDEN IN THE 70'S IN CALIF AND I CSNT BELIEVE THE PRICES NOW. BUT MY GIRL WAS NOT THAT EXPENSIVE TO KEEP -- NO MORE THAN ANY DOG. IN 1976 SHE AND I DROVE IN A UHAUL FROM SAN FRANCISCO TO FLORIDA. SHE LOVED TO BE ABLE TO SIT SO HIGH IN THE TRUCK AND WE STOPPED AT EVERY VISITOR CENTER IN EVERY STATE. WE TRAVELLED FOR 6 DAYS AND I HAD TO SMUGGLE HER IN TO THE MOTEL EVERY NITE. WE STOPPED AT VISITOR CENTERS EVERY FEW HRS SO SHE COULD PLAY IN THE GRASS AND RUN.....SHE NEVER BARKED WHEN IN THE TRUCK OR MOTEL OR AT HOME FOR THAT MATTER......EVERY NIGHT WE SLEPT BACK-TO-BACK AND CONTINUED THIS TRADITION... WHEN WE GOT TO FLORIDA I RENTED A 2-BDRM DUPLEX WITH A FENCED YARD.....FLORIDA WAS MUCH CHEAPER THAN CALIF AND WE LIVED ON UNEMPLOYMENT AND GOVT RIF MONEY....WE DIDNT SPEND MUCH AND WE WERE GLAD TO HAVE EACH OTHER....I LOVED HER AND SHE SAVED ME DURING A DARK PERIOD IN MY LIFS.....SHE WAS NEVER ANY TROUBLE AND I DIDNT HAVE TO SPEND MUCH ON HER....THE SHEDDING WASNT BAD BECAUSE WE DIDNT HAVE CARPETING......AND IF I COULD AFFORD HER, ANYONE COULD.....I ALSO DONT THINK

But, definitely not for people with a sedentary lifestyle.

Price is not a reason not to get one! There are rescues in every state where what to pay is typically considerably less! You get out of a dog what you put into them! Training is best started around 9 months!
We currently have 8 dogs and have had many many dogs previously… King Charles, cavoodles, working line German shepherds, kelpies, border collies, springer spaniels, koolies, aussi shepherds, dobermans, American staffy…. Our golden retriever has been the worst dog I’ve ever had, hands down. Zero care for her owners, zero accountability to training. Lovely nature and gorgeous to look at but we get zero back from our girl. I would never go a golden again.
Oh no! I hope this is just the personality of your golden. We are going from a border collie to a golden, so I’m used to high drive and eager to learn. So hoping we get somewhere in the middle 😂

I think you are right on as the owner of a 6yo Golden! He's a purebred and has been a complete puppy the entire time. I just adopted my second Golden and he's got the energy of the first one at 6 mos and they are both amazing. They both ALSO require supervision 24/7 unless sleeping, playing with me, running around outside, on a car ride (sometimes even then) or in their kennels. I absolutely recommend anyone considering a Golden to watch this through several times, making sure EVERYONE in their family watches it. This is absolutely the life of a Golden owner.
