By far the most common dog around here and I never saw a problematic one. Perfect family dog in the countryside. They do have much energy but not as much as my Lab.
chose a bench-bred lab for a quieter pet. I have a 50/50 and she is already settling down at 6 mo, not at all hyper, does not even have to be walked daily since we have a large yard and do a bit of fetch and obediance. (PS I'm 77 😁) I couldn't have a long-haired dog in the foothills with all the stickers and foxtails.
The reason you almost never see problem goldens is to due with breed imagine. Nobody is gonna be scared of a lab or golden. So nobody wanting a scary dog is going to get one. Versus pitbulls. Golden reteivers actually have lower ATTS temperment test scored then pitbulls cane corso and a bunch of other scary breeds often turned into problems by idiot owners. In fact the pitbull issues didn't pop up until the 60s in the beginning and didn't get bad till the 80s Crack epidemic and a bunch of ghetto ass drug dealers buying them cause they were intimidating. Why some breed nerds such as myself purposefully scare off those types from certain breeds. "OH yeah dude don't get a kangal it'll turn on you and eat your kids" "nah dude don't get a corso if you don't exercise it enough and put in thousands in training they get risky" Although I generally don't post that stuff online or in written form. When I lived in the ghetto for a few years I had to recommend false info to alot of idiot owners who have had very destructive and dangerous dogs due to no training or bad training specifically making them mean. The one junky bitch had a golden that tried to eat everyone. But we suspect that dog had its brain fried by dope. Idiot dealer who lived up the street from me when I lived in the ghetto. Bullmastiff aggressive angry dangerous dog euthanized. Next one seized. 3 cane corso xl types seized one destroyed. Got another 2 corso same way moved before getting taken so no idea what happened. But idiot was trying to buy a kangal and a wolf hybrid. Had to show him the wolf hybrid I raised and specifically use certain training my wolfdog has to convince him they're evil dangerous dogs he can't handle and would eat his kids and wife. Mostly due to the fact he thinks a28 inches fence will keep dogs in and never exercises them and leaves them in a tiny ass backyard 24 7 365 days a year till the day they die. No vaccines no nothing else. And beats his dogs. Making them aggressive towards everyone except himself and even then he's been bitten by his dogs. Also purposefully teaches them to want to attack uniforms like police paramedics and fire fighters. His one bandogge mastiff mutt he had with the bull mastiff fucking mauled a kid so bad I'm surprised the kid lived at all. Versus. My buddy has a primitive rescue abuse case tibetan that's well behaved. Along with a Caucasian shepherd also well behaved. Our other friend has a kangal that's a giant baby unless you actually make it mad or try to harm its owner or family. My corso is so friendly that people think she's a lab mix puppy. They tend to freak out and act all scared once I tell them she's a pure bred cane corso. Hence why owner licensing needs to be a thing. And breeders should have to be licensed. And punishments for illegal breeding need to exist. Raises the cost of dogs and puppies. Reduces destroyed dogs and shelter dumps and other negative effects of retarded breeders. Get rid of show breeders who force over confirmation in breed standards and the inbreeding and lack of genetic diversity and health issues go away as well.
So much depends on the owner and how he raises and trains the puppy 🐶 into the family. Has the time to do so consistently. U will get a great loving dog
Yes and no. Some breeds unless your kids are very respectful snd intelligent don't usually work very well or at all as family dogs. Certain primitive breeds can be nasty with kids. Even with alot of work. You also have breeds with numerous and essentially breed wide neurological issues that cause problems. Most often in toy breeds though but some of them I wouldn't allow near children unless I know that specific dog in question is stable.
Smart, gentle, very affectionate, and so easy to train. They are a bit small but a top tier dog for sure. My Mastador puppy named Otto might be the best dog I ever had though as far as combining smarts, affection, being gentle, very protective, and size as he is projected to be 34.2 inches at the shoulder and 177 lbs. I still miss my Copper Penny III who was a beautiful female Golden Retriever who passed away back in 1993.
Every person/you tuber says something different about every dog breed. It’s so hard to get a true picture of what to expect as a new dog owner. One of your videos talked about ‘it’s good to leave a dog alone’ yet this one says differently! 🤷🏼♀️
It’s not contradictory; there’s nuance. All dogs need to learn to be independent, but some will find it harder and require more input than others - the goldie is one such breed 😊
Part of it is due to breeders often show breeders backyard breeders breeding dogs outside of standard. For example. Don't buy red nose pit bulls anymore especially not old family red nose lines unless you really know the breeders. One very respected old family red nose breeder purposefully breeds overly aggressive dogs with extra high prey drives. To make them easier to train hunting guard and attack dogs. But often doesn't tell any of his customers that and has denied it in the past despite there being proof of it in writing. Old family red nose. The breeder claims he's breeding them to the old fighting temperment standards for workability but it's proven old family red nose strains which originate from Ireland were originally bred for zero tolerated needless aggression and mostly for looks and the red coloring then anything else. Where I live we have a chihuahua breeder who thinks aggressive chihuahuas are funny and when they nip and bite people or snap that it's cute. So he's purposefully been breeding worse and worse temperment chihuahua. Then you have show breeders not caring about anyrhing other then titles. So temperment and health go out the window inbreeding goes up and neurological issues develop. Unless they ho by original standards. Most people go based off the lines they have experience with or the individual aninals they have experience with. Neither really works out. So essentially. Look for the original breed standards. And the original info. Then on the exact line of the puppy you are looking at. For example. My friends neighbor has a rescue puppy coming. Arksaray malakli. Usually a shepherd livestock guardian dog. But fighting lines exist and are extra aggressive naturally and other amped up aspects of the temperment to make them better fighting dogs or easier dogs to train to fight. Now they are dog aggressive and stranger aggressive normally but can be trained to be great dogs normally. From fighting lines more work needed and sometimes never fully fixed for the temperment issues regardless of how much training. You then have to account for personality differences of dog to dog.
Golden retrivers are only smarter then labs because most labs are bred like crap and also have less genetic diversity higher levels of poulstion wide inbreeding and have been selectively bred longer away from the original temperments and standards. Remember a lab is just coat specific breedings of a land race dog from newfoundland and labrador. The st johns waterdog. Golden is the same. But with red setter and spaniels and other genetics added back in after the diversion from the st johns. As well as for most of the population certain istincts were bred entirely out of the labrador.
Goldens are bred like crap worse than labs because they're the most popular family dog and commonly sold cheap and improperly bred. The testing of the intelligence of these breeds is tested on the smart, well bred dogs, not the poorly bred ones, so your point is irrelevant anyway. Goldens are top 3-4 in intelligence in every metric
Will Atherton is absolutely NOT a qualified or even knowledgeable dog behaviourist. Anyone who uses prong collars is NOT a behaviourist, just a bully. Beware
golden retrievers in my mind are absolutely pathetic, they have no 'dog' in them there is no protective instinct. They have no kick back in them, they just smile at everything. They also age like milk and are only ok for like 8 years
I guess it depends! My Golden was really protective -super laid back+dopey and I was shocked to find out he was protective when I was in those situations. He lived until 12 and acted like a puppy until the last few months..he had lymphoma:( He was a one of a kind dog though.
Depends on the line. People claim the same thing about labs and yet I can show you a working line of labs that has had dozens of dogs pass protection dog training with ease. And many who were naturally protective. When I lived in the ghetto for a few years we had a monster of a golden that wanted to eat everyone and their dogs. Some junky bitch owned it. Pretty sure she made it aggressive and fried its brain with dope. Most people buying goldens don't train them to be protective or build that instinct. And most are pet lines now not working lines. And many working lines are compromised with pet and show line blood making them less effective. If people actually knew the breeds rhat went into creating the st johns waterdog and thus all it's descendant breeds besides what was later added in. Nobody would think labs or goldens are friendly good family dogs. They'd get the instant mastiff big nasty dog looks. Cao de fila de sao miguel through its none brindle sister breed the cao de terceira. The cao de castro laboreiro. And a bunch of other working breeds. Golden has some other stuff added into it. But breeds known for being hunting dogs working dogs and protective for at least some of them. Cao de terceira and the currently still extant brindle version the st miguel cattledog can be very very aggressive guard dogs. Cao de castro laboreiro is known as the Portuguese watchdog and gave the lab its head shape. Essentially breeders suck and opinions and public image is retarded on some breeds. And most people have no clue what they're on about and just judge certain breeds based off how they're raised not what they can actually turn into.
Thank you for your expertise and sharing it with all! ❤
Yes.
The English cream European line is more calm and doesn’t require as much exercise.
Thank you for your share .They are so cuteeee!!!

Duuuuuude mastadors are a fucking top tier mutt. Deffs a great combination. Daniffs are awesome too.
Yes, if anyone says no they're wrong.

What a crock of shit. You must have a sub 20 IQ
Lol brought my Golden home, never walk him, he's not overweight and he's the perfect dog.
That’s not a flex
