    Philip is nasty on guitar. Loud fendery tone and intensity of SRV, and fuzzes it out like Hendrix. Puts it all together and then gives it a steroid injection. Monster player, and always seems very humble when interviewed. Appears to almost go out of his way to be polite and attentive to anyone who talks to him. I Wish him as much success as he wants!

    Philip is by far one of the greatest blues players around, one of my personal favorites and biggest influences. Having a tone or playing style to SRV is a compliment, the best one you can get. If there's someone who doesn't understand that, either jealous or just close minded. This is called keeping the flame and I personally don't want Stevie's legacy to be lost especially when Kanye Wests and Justin Beibers rule the music business today.... Just think about it.

      I agree with you. But guitar has always been about finding your own sound. He's just emulating. Kinda boring no?

      Tommy Katona I just discovered Philip and your right, he is a bad ass guitar player with brutal tone and attitude. Lovin' it!

    • @hankerwin7879
      @hankerwin7879 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ***** I've never known a guitarist who isn't a bit emulation and a bit their own. I've listened to a whole lot of Philip's playing and I can hear SRV's influence but not necessarily more than I hear Albert Collins, Freddie King, or Hendrix influence. I find Philip's playing to be extremely unique and…if you find it boring then who on earth do you find exciting?

    • @Worldwideguy96
      @Worldwideguy96 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tommy Katona Keeping the flame? You don't need copy cats and emulators to keep the flame burning because great music will sustain forever and will never be forgotten.

    I saw Phillip when he was with Jeff Healey at Hampton Beach Casino in the mid 90's and he was amazing on both guitar and vocals. We actually ran into the whole band hanging out in the parking lot after the show and we spoke with Jeff, Joe and Tom for a while and then Phillip came out and he was truly a regular guy. He actually apologized to me when he got distracted by another fan during our conversation. I have always remembered that. Very talented guy who truly respects his fans.

  • @AlexanderLJensen

    if you look closely(i also read this somewhere), he is only running the tuner of the one spot, the rest is running on batteries, except the Mega vibe, which has its own power supply(because it doesn't run at 9v), and the Ep3 delay which has it's own power supply. that's why his rig is so quiet with all those pedals. Some people(Eric Johnson fx.) even prefers the sound of some pedals using Batteries instead of power supplies.

    He was at the top of his game here . He looks like a model and fashion guy , with, the best wah tone , and tones in general. He looks like the sleeper pick, the guy that looks like he is sleeping with some super model , and looks like he is a gym, fashion guy, then unloads legit playing and tone , leaving you thinking , wtf just happened from the Calvin Klein model?

    • @JohyeahM
      @JohyeahM 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah true. Peak Sayce here. He looks a bit washed out and ragged now...in a guitar god way!!! But here...blimey. He had the looks to slay before he even picked a note.

    @Gvecchi Not only in this video. If you check other videos of him you'll notice that he has the classical SRV kinda clean/crunchy sound. But I like it. I like his SRV aproach, but at the same time he has his own voice. He's more rock oriented. In fact some times he plays hard rock. SRV was criticized at the beginning 'cause of the same reason. People used to say that he was a Hendrix clone, but years later time put him on the right place.

    @billyclay2 it wasn't just the srv references. i believe joe had a gold strat and came to fender with an idea for a sig model based on it, they rejected his idea and then a couple of months later fender came out with a gold strat that was very similar to Joe's.

    Cranking a silverface Super Reverb full of JBLs, with a Strat? Nasty, ballsy and bright as hell. Most guys would sound paper thin through a rig like his, but damn does Phillip rip it apart!

    • @L3ONARDO07
      @L3ONARDO07 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      FunknRoll95 I agree. I think people are quick to dismiss certain speakers and amps for being "too bright" sounding and seem to forget what the knobs on their guitar and amp are for.

    Let's don't bend Philip outta shape like we did with Joe B... Though I think he's way more a Strat guy than Joe wanted to be... I've never really understood why Joe completely gave up his Strats outta comments that he sounded so much like SRV... To me there's really no comparison other than they get everything from their influences which happen to be somewhat the same... They are all definitely monsters in their own right!

    • @Ed-yj8ts
      @Ed-yj8ts 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought Mayer was just average too except for his genius decision to break into the business by playing poppy acoustic songs, then play the introduce the strat afterwards. BUT, then I saw him play live acoustic guitar by himself - no amps, no backup band. He is insanely talented, not just some chord strummer.

    @aektzis91 Idefinately see your point, but for my ears thats more SRV. To me Hendrix was more of a marshall tone, not that real fender amp/ Leslie combo tone like is apparent here. You are right tho, very Hendrix - SRV did borrow heavily from Jimi in his licks and phrazing. This guy is a great player very tasty, I dont think I said that in my original comment.

The EP Booster running off the same model Dunlop wall wart isn't as bad either. Weirdness. I gotta just suck it up and get a Pedal Power one of these days...
