Thank you for using the correct terminology: under appreciated. When someone’s favorite guitar player isn’t featured on the cover of Guitar Player magazine or ranked in the top 10 of Rolling Stone magazine Top guitar players, they say he’s/shes “underrated”. Thats false. Nobody would claim Hacketts ability as “low”. But yes, he’s less recognized and under appreciated for his playing and accomplishments than he should be. Underrated? No. Under appreciated? Definitely.
From the first time I saw him in 1973 with Genesis at the Roxy theater to this day, Steve has remained in my top five favorite guitarists of all time and the way he is keeping the classic Genesis music alive and valid today is inspiring. Love this guy !!! 🎸
I saw Steve Hackett in a very small venue in Scottsdale AZ. He was the nicest fellow. He played Genesis favorites as well as his solo stuff. He was great.
This made my day! I've been a fan since early Genesis and just saw the Genesis Revisited Foxtrot concert, which was phenomenal. He's responsible for my owning a Fernandez Burny LP... I loved the rundown on his pedalboard!!!
I've always been a big fan of Steve's playing, admittedly I got into the "classic" Genesis a couple years after listening to the Phil Collins-era but Hackett always blew me away with his playing on classic tunes like "Supper's Ready" (first song from that era I heard after a family friend played it in his car once), "Dancing With the Moonlit Knight", "Watcher of the Skies" and "Firth of Fifth" is just otherworldly and it's absolutely fucking awesome so it was definitely cool seeing him and his tech talk about gear (although the baby powder bit did made me laugh since I genuinely did not expect that)
Steve is such a humble guy, love his lesson on vibrato and then he takes it into space. We have mutual friends so hope to meet him one day. I love that everything he plays is so musical - even the most extreme sounds have so much musicality.
Thank you Chris & Vince & Steve ! What a pleasant surprise. I've long been a Steve Hackett fan. There was a long time when the Please Don't Touch and Cured albums didn't come off my turntable. Great episode ! Gratefully - John
I have seen Steve in Paris for the Foxtrot at 50' tour and this is one of my favorites show ever ! All was perfect, the chemistry between him and his musicians , the setlist and of course the sound was perfect!!!
One of my teenage years guitar heroes. GTR formed just after I started learning to play. I remember reading the guitar mags and waiting for the album to drop. Still have the cassette and the guitar mags. I probably gravitated towards Steve Hackett because Steve Howe doesn’t look like a rock star. 😂
I have a couple 1981- 1982 Guitar player mags and Steve is featured in a couple articles. He had a custom effect rack switching system before the technology went mainstream. A particular article talks about how and who created his vast at the time (1980-1982) floorboard and routing of rack effects. Guy was way,way ahead of the times.
AWESOME! Steve is one of the best EVERY players in rock/prog - and if you have not seen him play a classical guitar you are in for it. Thanks PG for this great review of the tools of one of the masters of the fretboard.
As I'm watching this I can't help but thinking how on earth does he remember all these pedals and settings and never hit the wrong button? Nonetheless Steve is a rare treasure of talent, grace and humility. The best!
I know it's not on his setlist, but I'd love to hear Steve play his song Please Don't Touch (AKA the song that made him leave Genesis) with those PS-6s. I can totally hear it. th-cam.com/video/uNfcerx_b-k/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
He even infers that it's not the best sounding dirt out there, but it is the sound he wanted. And it totally works for him. Which should show others out there that you don't need to have the best, most expensive equipment out there to have a great sound.
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Steve is amazing. Just saw his show and I want to see it again. I tried but failed to see what pedals he was using at the break , now I know - some interesting surprises
Very nice video from one of my idols. Swears by the pedal to pedal to pedal configuration, not so much into modellers. The most important is that the sound is in the fingers and the head. I happen to use pedal to pedal ánd modelling. Nice combination as well. Cheers Steve and everyone❤❤❤
Oh yes I did. Steve Hackett is very special. Back in 78 it was my first live concert I attended. I was 14. My older brother took me. My brother died 12 years ago. I always connect Steve with him. Spectral Mornings... 😢 Chilling... Steve is a nice guy who truly keeps the Genesis spirit alive.... And the interviewer asked good questions.. More for the geeks...but I guess I am one... 🙏♥️
You don't get a bigger sound out of heavier strings. Just more bass. Lighter strings are brighter. I've used Extra Slinky 0.008's since the mid-70s and until SRV came along, nobody thought it was in any way amazing. Much easier bending that requires a lighter touch. Rick Beato did a series on it. BTW, Steve Hackett is one of my favorite guitarists! Phenomenal musician.
It's funny that a lot of these older players like Hackett, Neal Schon, Dave Amato, Alex Lifeson all use Floyds on Les Pauls (or LP style) which back in the day was considered sacrilege. Same with Engl... people think they're only metal amps yet Hackett, Steve Morse and Blackmore all use them.
Isn't it nowadays when it's considered a sacrilege, not back in the day? In the 70s and 80s those were just old guitars, nowadays they are of course "priceless vintage artifacts"
@@oskarileikos It wasn't just about looks. The Les Paul was also a thick chunk of wood and Gibson weren't exactly innovators at that time. I remember I was in Sam Ash in the early 80's and a guy wanted to order a Les Paul with a Floyd. They called Gibson and the Gibson rep laughed at them on the phone. They didn't even have a custom shop until the 90's. The real point was that it's not hair metal guys that are known for using Floyds on Les Pauls - it's older players.

I mean, Floyd Rose has invented the FRX bridge for this reason. It's a Floyd Rose meant to be mounted on Tune-O-Matic bridge setups and it's a drop in replacement you can take out if you want. Even the locking nut is removable.
@@BrunodeSouzaLino Yes, I am aware of the FRX but the comment was about older players playing Les Pauls that are routed for an original Floyd which was considered sacrilege back in the day. They're not using an FRX.
Robert Fripp has been using the identical guitar outfitted with all the same bits and pieces for years. Who had it first ??? I noticed just a few years back that Steve was using his Godin Signature guitar? I was a Genesis fan since the beginning. There was tiny, tiny Brit record import store where you could buy all the records. You could not hear them so it was a case of read the liner notes and , LOL. My first record was the Beno LP. It was released 3 months before it arrived at the store. I jumped the pond and moved to London UK's West End in 71 and was guitarist for the prog rock band Tallis. I have not played a cover tune since 1969. I and am still at it. I will be 77 in 2 weeks, LOL.
Actually no. Robert's first guitar was a black Gibson LP. The guitar he uses today is a Fernandes LP with a Kahler bridge and the sustainer, which is is a sort of continuation of his Tokai LP which had the same configuration.
What a great guy, I love the pedal board..! Loved the question about the modelers, I don’t understand them, I’m an old fashion guy…Me too…! Yet I recently purchased a Line 6 Pod Go and I am still trying to understand all the stuff it can do…! I’ve barely scratched the surface….!
Extremely cool, Steve is the Master. (you didn't mention your strum hand slides with the pinky ring, luckily you showed me that trick backstage... thanks.)🤩
I would like to see Steve give a modeling pedal system a go. I'm a techie guy who likes to explore new solutions, though I don't mess with what works ultimately.

Finally!!!! One of the most under appreciated guitarists ever. Steve is a legend!
You beat me to it mate!
Pretty much exactly my sentiments.
Hackett is that rare thing in music: a genuine innovator.
He scares me. Absolute gem.

Under appreciated? Definitely.
Not underappreciated if you're an old Genesis fan.
Well put
Not only one of the best to pick up a guitar, but a total gem of a person.
An absolute gentleman and a true pleasure of a human ❤️
Always blows me away when you see such a legend as Steve who’s one of the true originals of his era turn out to be such a friendly and humble guy.
Many thanks to Premier Guitar for that ! Steve has always been one of my heroes. It's great to see him in good shape and still on stage.
Couldn't agree more!
The sounds Steve gets out of that rig are crazy.
Steve has his own sound that you can tell on record and live, like Steve Howe and David Gilmour.
Why David didnt want to share his thought?
From the first time I saw him in 1973 with Genesis at the Roxy theater to this day, Steve has remained in my top five favorite guitarists of all time and the way he is keeping the classic Genesis music alive and valid today is inspiring. Love this guy !!! 🎸

one of the many great "Steve's" on guitar
He seems like a real genuine guy, an absolute monster of a player.

On running two germanium fuzzes at once (!) - “gave a very… emphatic upper harmonic”!
Comedy understatement all through this, love it
Steve is such a humble guy, love his lesson on vibrato and then he takes it into space. We have mutual friends so hope to meet him one day. I love that everything he plays is so musical - even the most extreme sounds have so much musicality.
Thank you Steve for walking us through your pedals!
Thanks Premier Guitar. Loved this, especially Stave taking us through his pedalboard!

Yes 👍🏻. Finally one of my absolute heroes. So important as an innovative and progressive player.
What a gent Steve is! Great interview - thank you.👍👍
Steve is a genius ! A real tone master as well .
Such a cool thing when the artist demonstrates the rig in person! Love it!
I have seen Steve in Paris for the Foxtrot at 50' tour and this is one of my favorites show ever ! All was perfect, the chemistry between him and his musicians , the setlist and of course the sound was perfect!!!
One of my first guitar albums was the first GTR record. I had no idea who they wrre as a kid but I loved it!!!!🎸🎸🎸🎸
I asked for this rig rundown for so many years. Thanks guys! Thanks Mr. Hackett!
If there was one guitar hero I could sit down with, or better, take lessons from, it would be Steve Hackett! Thank you for this entire video!!❤️🎸❤️
You're very welcome!
A true music legend.
this is the type of rundowns i get sucked into. details and how to. thanks Steve and PG.
Great guitarist, I grew up on his music and glad he's still hard at it! Watching this it occured to me that Eric Braeden could be his doppelganger .
_"Very screamy, very lovely."_ ~ Steve Hackett
Seems like a really humble guy. So happy for all his fans !
sure he is humble but a pure genius so big differences with some others
Steve is an incredible player. I saw him play in Brisbane a year or so ago and he is something else 🤘🏼
Even tho Steve is British, he says Tubes not valves. What a cool funny guy!
How enjoyable is this!!
So cool, with the MAESTRO himself.
Thanks, Premier Guitar!!
Glad you enjoyed it!

I've seen Steve play a couple times and got to meet him once. Really, really kind guy.
3:22 Don't forget Phil Collins and Comrads came out of the fusion Era. "Brand X" was definitely the Math Rock of the day.
Ive had the honor of being on records and sharing the stage with him .. he is one of the greatest of all time and still amazing!
I’d imagine “here’s one I made earlier” doesn’t resonate with our US friends like it does with Brits of a certain vintage 🤘

No gray hair at his age- amazing!
Wow, great episode, love what steve does with the sustainer, harmonizer and whammy...
One of the nicest, most humble guitar heroes out there!
A true innovator of guitar styles & tones. Love that he's still using analog pedals too.
This is awesome.
A real Master of tone and good taste !!
Legend!!!! thanx for this video!
Tyranny of volume. Great line.
AWESOME! Steve is one of the best EVERY players in rock/prog - and if you have not seen him play a classical guitar you are in for it. Thanks PG for this great review of the tools of one of the masters of the fretboard.

Well that was crazy this is going to sell a lot of harmonist 😂
I know it's not on his setlist, but I'd love to hear Steve play his song Please Don't Touch (AKA the song that made him leave Genesis) with those PS-6s. I can totally hear it. th-cam.com/video/uNfcerx_b-k/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Sounded great, especially using it as a chorus.
I love that he still has the price tag on the Attack Decay .. what a baller!
The infamous line 6 dm4 ! I hated this stuff back in the days...steve definitly think out of the box.
He even infers that it's not the best sounding dirt out there, but it is the sound he wanted. And it totally works for him. Which should show others out there that you don't need to have the best, most expensive equipment out there to have a great sound.
The Dallas Mejestic Theater show Apr 6th, was so sublime and powerful.. They smashed Foxtrot effortlessly. 😊
One of the greatest!
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Steve is amazing. Just saw his show and I want to see it again. I tried but failed to see what pedals he was using at the break , now I know - some interesting surprises
I find it funny you asked Steve's tech if he's a "sweater". As a guy with "alien molecular acid sweat" as my friends call it, I always wonder this.
Yes! I was hoping for this!
Wish we could see the pedals he used on Foxtrot in the studio and live. But this was great and Steve is the best! The real deal.

Such an unassuming and fantastic guitarist. Hallmark of a great artist
About bloody time!

I just got a Burny Super Grade with a Sustainer. Such a fantastic tool.
What a sweet guy, very charming. Great player 🤙🤙
Couldn't agree more!
Top 20 guitarist of all time- not even on Rolling Stone radar. What a joke. Love it the Attack Delay still has the price tag on it.
He's just a plec spanker. Proper old school and i love his approach. P.S i dont understand this new technology either 😂
ENGL!!
I started using ENGL about 8 years ago, the headroom in these just blows away Marshall’s
Really interesting to hear the master go through his pedal rack..

Mister sustainer so before than Satch :)
I must add he was the biggest influence for Eddie's tapping
I love his work with Djabe
Great band! Outstanding collab!
ENGL Amps sound very good clean. many people think its just overdrive sounds
my favourite guitar player ever
The sustain. Just listen to it.
I won his album from a radio station in Seattle by naming a film clip attack of the killer tomatoes on Kstw back in 1981
Legend
YES FINALLY
Stop nudging him toward modelers 😂 I love it when there’s a good old fashioned pedalboard
The man said 'tyranny of volume' ... lol
Funny little pun there at 2:13
Top musician 🎸🎸

The way his tech holds the gold top is giving me anxiety lol
I love this ! And "Hack it Hacket"
