I fookin love Philip!... he's the real deal I'm glad his got mother where it should be now. In my opinion he's the greatest blues rock guitarist in the world! Period...
Phillip was visibly sad about his old neck, but i absolutely LOVE my 66 strat. I played pre-cbs strats at chicago music exchange with enough cash to get one and walked out with the 66. Glad he found a neck he can love
Love hearing about the state of the vintage market from a player's perspective. It's reassuring that other players are looking out for one another to make them more obtainable.
Ah man... the 62 sounded great. It's always a tough thing to let them go. I just sold a 40's Martin D-18 that was otherworldly. Every pro player that played it said it was the best one from that era they had played. But it had a humongous neck. I sold it to get another Martin that I like a little better, and a much better neck. Great interview and info as always man.

I watch these videos all the time for more information and little things I’ve not picked up and mainly inspiration too… really hope nik does some more stuff like this one again one day
It depends. If you're looking for a player-grade example like Nik's go on Reverb. Otherwise find a reputable shop like Carter Vintage Guitars in Nashville.
Philip is definately one of my fave blues rocker. i would put him up there with SRV for sure..and i was glad and relieved he has his action at least as high as mine on my LTD EC 256..due to a curved neck at 12th fret and fucked truss rod that won't adjust..any lower that 6/16" and it fret buzzes something chronic..but Phil ip has insanely high action too,,by choice
What kind of fretboard radius is he ending up at with these refrets? Is he trying to keep the original rounder 7.25 on since they're vintage necks or are they getting planed flatter each time?
The vintage market is out of control with stores like Rumbleseat and other big name stores that crank up the price. I always wanted an old strat but I wont pay up for it anymore. Ill wait till it comes down again. The price on re-finished guitars across the board is so messed up. If a guitar is refinished, to me, its always a half price guitar at that point. I see refinished strats listed for like 10-12 k. Id rather like, just never buy one ever than pay that price for that.
Matthew Scott people are nuts and list it for that price and just turns me off and makes me not even want to deal with that. Half of that, I’m interested especially if I can strip the refin like you and nik did
It honestly boils down to the legions of people that have been tricked in to thinking they'll be the next SRV if only they have a beat up Strat. If I could scream anything in the face of every young player I would scream "BE YOURSELF! THE WORLD HAS ENOUGH SRV WANNABES!" You don't have to have a Custom Shop Strat or a vintage Bassman or a vintage Strat to be a good and effective player. Tone is in your hands. Always has been. Always will be.
😁 Looks a lot like my late 65 neck And yes the market is being manipulated Trending towards non pro Lawyer's Dr's People with money who want to be weekend warriors Harley and old strat Real musicians are getting priced out
I'm confused how putting a 66 Rosewood neck onto Mother would solve the rosewood confiscation issue in customs? Is it not "Brazilian Rosewood"? Would a customs agent even know that? Edit- update- Oh, there's the answer- it's Indian Rosewood...I didn't wait long enough into the video to ask! Thanks Nik! Looking forward to Part 3
@@theriffwniksevigny5473 lol are they really that good? Like how do customs agents just look at a guitar and know is Brazilian. Also what difference does it make on something like a guitar where the rosewood tree was cut and processed 50 yrs ago

there is an excellent interview of him, it is interesting when he says that his neck relief is almost flat! what do you think nik when he refers to measurements? you use 0.012 and how much does he use? I ask you why maybe you had his strat in your hands haha and it is good to learn from the greats. here is the interview www.musicradar.com/guitarist/philip-sayce-interview-291496
And the truss rod? "I like it fairly flat with just a little bit of relief in the middle; fairly flat, but it needs a little relief because otherwise when you start to really snap the strings, it can get a bit buzzy off the frets." sayce
@@theriffwniksevigny5473 I have no doubt that this strat is very special! but several times I read that great players use straightened necks with high action (bonamassa example) so I'm going to try straightening it around 0.008 0.10 and raising the action
Nothing against players that prefer vintage guitars, to each their own. But it would be incredibly difficult for me to become so attached to a guitar that is obsolete and out of production. They have a limited life and can only be repaired so many times.
Why couldn't you just have a luthier put on a new Brazilian finger board on the '63?. it's not the end of the necks life if it has had many re-frets and become too thin.
If a 53 Strat could talk ....I wonder what she would say playing your kind of music on a guitar that has never heard of that kind of sound before.....culture shock.....show some respect.

Agreed. Although srv was lost at a young age. This guy kept the spirit alive and in many ways improved it. Greatest tones on the planet from this guy

Cool!!
Johan segborn did a shootout of strats from 54-73 and in my opinion the 67 was the best. Been searching for a 66 or 67 neck ever since

Does he keep the 7 1/4 "radius on his guitars?
I don't know, I but I would imagine that after so many refrets and years of playing long gigs, it must be flattened naturally
