About twelve years ago, I bought a triple locked 94 in perfect condition with 160k as a family hauler for $5,000; main reason I got it was because it had third row seating. We had owned it for about five years when I realized how great of a vehicle this was. Still haven't done any major mods on it but we'll probably never get rid of it. Love this thing so much.
I’m picking up my ‘91 FJ 80 tomorrow. And to hear you say “Dude, you made it!” Dude! We Made It. Mine is a fixer upper, no interior but no rust and straight frame. So I’ll be building from the ground up on a budget as well. #BudgetBallers
I was definitely guilty of modding before baselining my 80. Left me stranded in the desert with an 80 and no coolant. I replaced every cooling system component myself and now runs like a champ.
I was able to finally successfully purchase my dream 80 series land cruiser in Austin, TX (I'm from Houston). It is a white 1997 collectors edition with over 16k in recent maintenance and clean carfax. Has a 2 inch doninsons lift and I just can't stop driving it! God is great! Going to be watching each video you post. Thanks for all you do!
Had my HZJ 80 for 20+ years still love it and I will probably rust out before it does, oh and I live in the Western Australia outback. Your advice to "new" owners is perfect. Mate (Aussie for dude !!!) you got the message perfect. Oh! what a feeling
great vid. I'm not in America, but my exp w LC in both Africa and Indonesia for off road cueing, is better w narrow tires always, I never try to bogg into mud for fun. But after 30 years exp, getting through thick wetsand, rainmud, and dunesand, narrow is a must. I think personally fat tires are more for climbing and looks. Lots of love for the great info and the LC peeps
"Dude....you made it!" Best line ever. I got a 92 in January. Drove it home but its been parked until I can get all of those maintenance things completed. But totally get ya. I looked at suspension and bumpers first thing haha. Keep up the quality videos. I will be watching 👀
I’ve recently acquired my dads 1997 Land Cruiser 40th Anniversary and it needs some work cosmetically. Internally, i know the truck is excellent because i know he takes good care of his vehicles. So excited to work on it! 🤙🏼
Found your channel today. Good content although of course petrol engined. I have two 80's as daily drives here in the bush. 1HZ & 1HD-T. So damn strong, just amazing. They both live off-road and do 90% dirt roads because of where I live and work. Biggest issue is tracking down the body squeaks and groans. Now that is a full time job.😂
I just discovered this channel and had to subscribe. I will enjoy going through your videos and learning how to better look after my own 80 series. Thank you for making this channel. It is perfect for a bloke like me.
Lot of people in-the-know, recommends 33" tires to be the pinnicle sweetspot for FJ80 (It's true for 100 series as well) You get plenty of ground clearance, drives well, don't have to ninjablade the body everywhere, don't have to compromise the drivetrain reliability, and MPG doesn't take a nosedive.
Ive owned my fzj80 center locked for about 6 years now and I can confirm this list is solid. The most important thing on this list is baselining, specifically replacing every hose. I've replaced so many parts on my cruiser. If you pick one up, you'll need to be ready to do a lot of deferred maintenance and preemptive maintenance.
G'day from Australia. Cool vid, just subscribed 👍 Love my Landcruisers, they are quintessentially Australian. My parents had a petrol 80 back in the 90's, then my mum had a 2002 100 series with the mighty turbo diesel 1HD-FTE (beautiful car) and my dad currently has a 2018 200 series with the V8 twin turbo diesel (beast). I just bought my first cruiser, 1996 80 series 1FZ-FE and currently doing repairs and maintenance before I think about any mods. Love it already though!
Took ownership of my LC 1995 80 yesterday. 3 lockers, mechanically sound. Recently serviced. Zero rust. Plan to reupholster seats and repaint in original color. That’s it.
Thank you for this video…I have had my 91 LC for about 3 years now….every time I walk up to it, I am grateful. Been quite a learning curve for me though….i.e. replacing the waterpump ….lol 😂 thought it would be no different then changing one out of an older ford or chevy pick up…..yikes! I got her done….but damn it was a little frustrating at time…lol 😊. Glad I came across your channel….looking forward to learning more stuff about my Cruzr….have a great week from Montana
I owned a LC80 VX 1997 diesel with triple lockers and I installed 38” tires on it with 6” lift and I didn’t have any problems with it,it was a very good and reliable car and many do run 44” tires on them here in Iceland, that’s nessisary when you are driving up onto the glaciers and to and from when most of the regular roads are covered with snow.
Im looking at an imported 92’ Prado. I’m too dumb to work on newer vehicles but was able to do a lot on older vehicles. Everything is so accessible and simple.
I like what you said about anybody can do their maintenance, if they just invest some time. I’ve saved thousands of dollars by just doing work by myself or with the help of a friend on my 3rd gen 4runner
have a 100-series. first thing did was spend over 5000 on maintain the core stuff, engine, drive train, suspension, fluids, etc. Now it runs even smoother and quieter, than some new cars.
I drove mine as is for the first 2 years while I saved money for everything that I had planned for it. Had transfer case, water pump, oil pump, gaskets, hoses, front/rear diff, heating/cooling, plugs, wires, distributor cap/coil and electrical all done for $3800 at TORFAB Land Cruisers. Wheels/tires, roof rack and ARB front bumper all sitting in the garage waiting to be installed after my paint job! Hoping to have it ready by July! Last thing on my list is upholstery and touch screen.
@@LNDCRUZIN : I'm glad ur putting out new content for the 80 series cus I know I'm not the only one who has watched every single vid on TH-cam more than once. I'll try to post a walk around when my rig is done.
From my experience on my ‘97 lx450: if triple locked and they won’t engage in a parking lot after turning and messing around etc, get all four tires off the ground (blocks), then engage lockers. should work. also check all fluids in engine, transmission, coolant etc. make sure there has been a headgasket done recently, or you have one on hand and ready for when you may need to replace it. hopefully before it’s too late. (personally had to buy a whole new short block from Toyota, hoses, practically a new car). i’ve replaced all my track bars and control arm bushings. sway bars may need some attention too, mine weren’t that bad. BIRFIELDS. they will need work. if you want to get them done, do it right. don’t half ass it. it’s long and may be frustrating but it is worth it to replace all gaskets, new red moly grease, new bearings etc. suspension, if you plan on 2 inches or more, also plan on “Drop Blocks.” SLEE Off-road sells them, that’s what I have on my Lexus. i’m running with a 2 inch lift. interior may also be an issue, just buy some cheap seat covers if you plan of repairs in the near future, if not then buy some quality covers. speakers too, chances are that they might be a little blown. Love your content. Finally a channel that shows me how to do something and not just how cool your truck is. Can you do a video on the proper way to grease the slip yokes and gear splines on the drive shafts. The service manual says to pump grease until it comes through the seal. A ton of other online resources say grease until the drive shaft barely moves and warms us to not over grease this spot because too much grease can damage some components in the transfer case. Let us know your thoughts and help us keep everything maintained.
Yeah but most vintage car owners know this stuff, us douchy landcruiser bros get the glassy eyed stare of seeing all the shit we need to put on our cruiser before making them reliable haha.
The center diff lock exists on the fj80 it just only locks when you shift into Low Range. It just doesn't have the center diff lock button for high range, which I have, but I never really need. If I really am doing some serious stuff I'm going to shift into Low range anyways.
Great Video! I love Land Cruisers. I have an aol 80 series I drive a lot and in my garage I have a 21 HE w/ third row option, but I never drive it much, I think I have just over 10k on it and I bought it on October of 2020.
I have a FZJ80 with part time 4x4, so it automatically has a centre lock. I added a lunchbox locker to the front because I have nearly got stuck a few times by getting cross axled. It does everything I could ask of it. I don't really like a rear locker because it can get you into real trouble & you end up on your roof. Learnt that driving a Unimog in my military days. It pivots around the back wheel that has traction & turns you sideways when you are climbing something steep.
I have a 79 scout 2 along with my cruiser which I put a lunch box locker in the rear of and after driving it alot in snow and mud, I agree with what you're saying. You're along for a ride and it can be pretty sketch but it is fun and also makes it much more capable and fun while in 2wd.
I have my beautiful 70 series vx 3.0 Td, i don't have any lockers and it is awesome. Of course i have in mind installing a rear locker in the future, but i kinda like the thrill of knowing you only have H4 and L4, and every obstacle is a challenge.
I have a FZJ80R Sahara triple locked it is awesome on the tracks I had a Toyota surf before it, chalk and cheese for capability heavy on fuel but it is what it is around 3 tone truck. have about 380000 k on the clock have rebuilt the motor runs great.
One positive about putting bigger tires is that your RPM's will go down and you will get better MPG in the freeway! The engine has enough horse power with the factory 4.10 gears and will be fine. No one cares that the speedometer/odometer will be off a little. That's what the speed app on your phone is for. 😉
RPM's go down per rotation, but to go the same speed (75MPH) on stock tires vs say 35s, but that also means you have much less torque available for say passing, going up hills etc. Thus you actually need to floor it in order to get the same power you would have had on smaller size tires. You will definitely not get better MPG's with bigger tires, the rotational mass/increased sidewall flexion will use more energy than you gain by going a larger diameter. And assuming you get a much wider tire on your cruiser like everybody does (they shouldn't, look up pizza cutter tires vs wide to see why) You will have even more drag.
Brother... love from Pakistan 🇵🇰 I own a 80 series I'm proud to be a owner of legendary series . Toyota land cruiser 80 series . Brother your content is very very awesome 👌 keep it up
Thanks again for sharing your videos . It’s interesting , helpful , reminding all of us , be happy what we got TLC are World known reliability off road suv except in the states because Big Three Paid$ out to White Color workers at Casa Blanca …
My plan is to get one of these one day, and make it my part-time daily driver, and take it on a few long road trips. Some occasional off-roading as well. Hope I get the chance. Liked and subscribed.👍Keep the content coming, please.
Rather than harbor freight tools, l recommend craftsman or better. Christmas discounts on tool sets are real. I got a small set for under the driver's seat.
Very nice video,I got my 80 series for 20 years and neglected on maintenance (besides oil changes and brakes) just did a tune up and going to change all the hoses, what other items are considered base lining?… Also where to get parts any good website? I need to re-do all the exaust and dont seem to find the right parts
regarding bigger tires.... you said.... might reduce mpg. please allow this old man to shed some light___ in the past some people have argued on this and then one day I heard a really old guy explain it better..... real simple... elementary physics and math... bigger circle requires more energy to turn. Smaller tire takes less energy to turn_____________ what do you think of that "old guy answer"🙂
Answer have two 80 series, original since new, and dented pre-rolled on to which lift kit big tyres etc... Added. Won to bash about and not have to worry about. Most important add ( both vehicles ) the second battery and fridge. Essential if you are nowhere for several days. Cheers
I was doing some maintenance on my '08 2.7 Tacoma and realized it had the original long life spark plugs at 165 K miles! Worn but working. I upgraded my '94 Land Cruiser with the iridium plugs, new wires, cap and rotor ( wish I could find cap with brass inserts). I bought a aftermarket thermostat and compared to the factory unit it's crap ( got Toyota version).
My 1992 80 with 1hz diesel has done over 700 k km's on the original motor. Biggest problem is body rust. It has no lockers but does have a 5 speed manual box.
Our 97 40th anniversary 3x locked has never and I mean NEVER left us stranded, 240k miles and still running brand new. I agree that you shouldn’t think badly about yourself if you don’t have the 3x locked version. To be honest for most people the standard center locker is perfect and I haven’t been in any situations when I have needed the front and rear to be locked. Unless you plan on wheeling then yes the 3x locked version is the way to go.
Wish list are a must! But yeah maintenance is first. I haven't driven mine in over a year. So Im doing maintenance. Then sliders from Coastal offroad! Oh yeah, a torque wrench is a must
I love my 80 series, I have a 93 4.5L petrol Sahara triple locked, I live in Australia legally we can only have a 2inch on standard tires and 2inch lift without engineering, don't forget to mention when you do your lift you need a 2inch castor correction
Wouldn't mind doing a diesel swap for one of these, especially since the U.S. doesn't ever get Japanese diesel options. And maybe just have it rolling on 32's.
My aunt messaged me because she wants to sell off my deceased uncle's 1996 FZJ80 triple lock Landcruiser. It's in serious need of repair. I'm thinking of buying it for myself. It only has 166k miles but it has sat for a while and needs a lot of interior and exterior detailing.
Two mistakes Australian buyers make (1). Towing with a non turbo 80 series. The manual gearbox behind the 1HZ is incredibly weak. (2) putting big tyres (33 or above) on an 80. With that Hilux sized front diff, you'll blow CV's constantly.
I can’t recommend the Ron Davis radiator enough. It’s expensive but made a big difference along with the Wits End modified fan clutch. Great video btw!
Purchased another Landcruiser FZJ80 ( for $6,500 Australian Dollars) with immaculate interior 24 valve petrol (gas) motor goes like a rocket. Also has a factory LPG (gas????) conversion. Swapped most of the stuff over seats, carpet, internal trim and just about to do the headliner. My HZJ80 has gone from a 1997 4WD to a 2020 Cruiser! These are probably the best Toyota 4WD ever made. Didn't have the $136,000 US to buy the 80 series with 2,000 miles on the clock at a recent US auction and cant afford the $175,000 AUD for a 300 Series. Arctic a Russian company is upgrading the new 300 series which looks awesome but I guess we are not allowed to buy stuff from there and I do not have $250,000 US in my back pocket. Don't like the hot turbos in the V6 valley as I think they will fry themselves, however the rest of the 300 series is classic LANDCRUISER.
First thing I did was take my landcruiser to Toyota and had them install brand new suspension as the wheel fell off 3 days after I bought it and didn’t trust the guy I bought it from to fix it drives perfect now just need to detail it and respray it and good to go
I'm really liking your 80 Series videos! This is still a vehicle that I would love to have; however, they can be really expensive! Depending on your approach and application. I'm also currently restoring and modifying my 99 3rd gen 4Runner 4x4 w/5 speed manual. This is also my daily driver, but I've always thought that maybe someday an 80 Series would come my way. Who really knows in the future... Thank you for this, so I also subscribed! Toyota Love! 👍❤
They’re not really that expensive. It’s just the previous owners don’t do any maintenance because it’s “indestructible”. It is but you have to do some things to keep it running right (birfields, rear main seal, etc.). There are great ones out there that need nothing. Buy the best one you can afford and it’s surprisingly cheap to operate. Remember, rust is your enemy
Thank you very much, you are in right for evrythink you said and i also yhink that the first five mistake is the same for evry new 4x4 owner! Now i m a jimny onwer but the 80 series and in particular the hdj80 is one of my dream! unluky in Italy there's no much 80 series and evry modify you make to your veicle, maybe you a winch, made you an outlaw man! that's a real problem! good luck for evrythink, this is a great video! 😍
Bought my 91 from the original owner and it had been sitting for YEARS, he did nothing to it, the front axel was full of sludge from seal failure as he just kept putting in grease through the knuckle... Soon as I got it home the rear shocks and water pump failed, then the radiator went (2 coolant drains in a month) and the list goes on. Thanks to Rock Auto most the parts where on clearance $2 belts $10 spark plug wire set, $20 rotor set ect.
Doesn't get any better. I've replaced my front wheel bearings and in seals twice in 2 years. My front left seal is leaking again. Major manufacturing error with them
Hey, Great video. I have a 91 JDM cruiser but its an Lj-78. Is this still considered an 80's series? Having a tough time finding repair manuals and part numbers\equivilent part #'s. Any advice?
Torn between a 3rd gen 4runner and a '92 LC that's for sale locally. Paints shot in a cool kinda way and says 175k miles on the clock, he asking 7k for it. I'm not looking to off road past the occasional dirt roads so going stock would be my goal.

"look away when pumping gas" -- exactly
I've done 450,000 kms and still running beautifully. IFZ duel fuel, mostly on LPG. :)
Awesome sounds like a sweet rig Gary!
Wow that's very interesting... Going fast down hill meaning.
Yep! I love my no locked 76 Series.
Thanks bro... Support here sir, just got my land cruiser 80serues, now starting addressing basic issues... I will make video soon...
Maintenance is key to keeping your Land Cruiser and should be the 1st thing you learn
I have a FZJ80R Sahara triple locked it is awesome on the tracks I had a Toyota surf before it, chalk and cheese for capability heavy on fuel but it is what it is around 3 tone truck. have about 380000 k on the clock have rebuilt the motor runs great.
hi I have a 91 landcruiser and it have a blown head gasket, wondering maybe you can make a video about head cylinder.
One positive about putting bigger tires is that your RPM's will go down and you will get better MPG in the freeway! The engine has enough horse power with the factory 4.10 gears and will be fine. No one cares that the speedometer/odometer will be off a little. That's what the speed app on your phone is for. 😉
Less rpm’s yes, but massive increase on heave rotational mass x4. Food for thought.
Bought mine yesterday, 👍🏻 1 one is so true.
Good work brother 😊 I'm thinking of buying one
Brother... love from Pakistan 🇵🇰
I own a 80 series I'm proud to be a owner of legendary series
. Toyota land cruiser 80 series .
Brother your content is very very awesome 👌 keep it up
Thanks brother! Love from California!
Lockers before lightbars. I just bought a 93 4 Runner with a nice lift and 35'z and a 96 Geo Tracker 2 door 4x4. But I want a 3 locked 80 series too.
Thanks again for sharing your videos . It’s interesting , helpful , reminding all of us , be happy what we got
TLC are World known reliability off road suv except in the states because Big Three Paid$ out to White Color workers at Casa Blanca …
Very nice video,I got my 80 series for 20 years and neglected on maintenance (besides oil changes and brakes) just did a tune up and going to change all the hoses, what other items are considered base lining?…
Also where to get parts any good website?
I'm not sure what you're talking about, but my TJ Rubixon handles 37" tires fine. I regeared to 4.88's...
I couldn't agree with you more! thanks for sharing
Wish list are a must! But yeah maintenance is first. I haven't driven mine in over a year. So Im doing maintenance. Then sliders from Coastal offroad! Oh yeah, a torque wrench is a must
My wishlist is way to long lol
“Smiles per gallon” 😄 I love it!
I just bought a 96 with 114k 80s series for 300 bucks today and honestly could cry myself to sleep for the rest of my life and I’d be okay with it
I love my 80 series, I have a 93 4.5L petrol Sahara triple locked, I live in Australia legally we can only have a 2inch on standard tires and 2inch lift without engineering, don't forget to mention when you do your lift you need a 2inch castor correction
Wouldn't mind doing a diesel swap for one of these, especially since the U.S. doesn't ever get Japanese diesel options. And maybe just have it rolling on 32's.
Agree, with baseline and preventative maintenance.
Wishlists and bookmarks
😄
Yes!
That's the reason landcruiser is best without upgrades.
I just got a 91. Fuel system is a mess, but I'll figure it out.
Two mistakes Australian buyers make (1). Towing with a non turbo 80 series. The manual gearbox behind the 1HZ is incredibly weak. (2) putting big tyres (33 or above) on an 80. With that Hilux sized front diff, you'll blow CV's constantly.
My 80 had 40s on it when I bought it...kinda ridiculous. Went down to 37s, way happier. Even happier after a regear.
I can’t recommend the Ron Davis radiator enough. It’s expensive but made a big difference along with the Wits End modified fan clutch. Great video btw!
Awesome thank you for the recommendation!
First thing I did was take my landcruiser to Toyota and had them install brand new suspension as the wheel fell off 3 days after I bought it and didn’t trust the guy I bought it from to fix it drives perfect now just need to detail it and respray it and good to go
Really appreciate your videos!
I appreciate that!
I have a FJ62 and love it!!!
Thank you brother! You will find one, mine fell into my lap! For a sweet deal
Congratulations ecellent video. Thank you!!!
Great content man. 80 series rule. 💪😃🤙
Go to Spain there are landcruisers everywhere.
First thing I did for my 105 was service it and get steering pump replaced change all oil transmission diffs
Major manufacturing error with them
How do you have the exact same hand prints on your hood that I do? Now I feel like this is as much part of the official paintjob as the white coat is.
Best Offroad machine bar none
Thanks for the advice God bless you
You should make a video on ride quality on long road trips. Wind noise and all that.
Hey, Great video. I have a 91 JDM cruiser but its an Lj-78. Is this still considered an 80's series? Having a tough time finding repair manuals and part numbers\equivilent part #'s. Any advice?
70 series
Torn between a 3rd gen 4runner and a '92 LC that's for sale locally. Paints shot in a cool kinda way and says 175k miles on the clock, he asking 7k for it. I'm not looking to off road past the occasional dirt roads so going stock would be my goal.
Bro, awesome channel, you won my sub first video. Then realized how many Godly vids ya had! Keep it up!💪🏻
Forgot to mention I got a 95 80 series 3x locked and a 1996 Lexus LX450. Going to sell the Lexus soon, it’s got 140k miles
Can I fit 35's without a lift? :)
Best Content ever,thanks Man
Do you guys not have the diesels like the hzj80 or the hdj80 in the states?
Hey man, how are you, I have no 80 Series and I needed help with the sway bad.... can you modify it for better performance and handling
Thanks. I love my 80 series! Should I smile with 33 litres per 100kms?
Yes, absolutely
