This is one of the most level-headed and fair reviews I’ve seen for the new LC. I think it’s a pretty solid little SUV. Only reason I didn’t go for one is because I got to test drive a GX550. Got a GX550 OT+ in Nori Green Pearl coming to me in a bout a week or so. Super excited!

@@edleifer6719 First Edition went for about $76k before markups. (Plus $5k “market adjustment” at all the Toyota dealerships my my area). About $71k for the non-First Edition top trim. (Again. Before markups). GX 550 OT is about $72k. No markup. (The Lexus dealerships around me all scoffed and said “we don’t do that here”). So no. Not $20k-$25k difference. So pretty strong case for buying a GX 550 OT. Now the OT +? That goes for $81k or so. But I wanted all the luxury stuff so… LOL

I love the ending lol. The Land Cruiser Prado is still a land cruiser!! I picked the exact same land cruiser as you. I liked the GX overtrail+, here is why I personally went Land Cruiser 1. I like the hybrid honestly. 2. the GX overtrail+ has faux leather, I like real leather. 3. The price of the overtrail+ is 80,000 with some options like heads up display, cool box and Mark Levinson audio. 4. There are no HVAC roof vents on the overtrail+ model, just in the back of the center console. 5. There is not climate control buttons for the back seats either. 6. AAAAHHHH here is the biggest one. I have a 2023 tundra and they are replacing over 100,000 engines in the LX and Tundras. Everyone is saying how the tundra engine's sucks but love the GX engine.... REALLY!!! Don't get me wrong I think the TTV6 is great, great power, decent mileage, really fast.... OTHER THAN THEY ARE BLOWING UP!! It's the same damn thing in the GX. Let's see what happens when they recall GX550's for bad engines. I have a bad engine it sucks!. 7. Also I like the physical buttons on the Land Cruiser. 8. Better departure and approach angles and it's simple suspension set up. 9. The screen on the GX is essentially the same size as the Land Cruiser the bottom 1/3 is climate control. 10. GX overtrail + doesn't even have a digital rear mirror. 11. The land cruiser has a 2400 watt inverter hell yeah! All this and Land Cruiser is 10 grand cheaper, historically Toyota's have better resale than their lexus counter parts. Look at a lx570 vs Land cruiser same year and original MSRP. I am going to say GX may have the win on resale but only time will tell. That being said Both Vehicles are Bad Ass in my opinion can't go wrong either way. Lexus always has better build quality over toyota's for sure.

Here in Europe, the land cruiser has always had a straight four cylinder engine (for at least 20 years and probably more.) Albeit diesel, like all trucks and SUVs here. Now the land cruiser has never been a fast car, but I mean that is not really the reason you buy one. And the engine is super reliable, and will probably take you to the end of the world and back.

And as an owner of a 1969 FJ 40 in Coronado Beige, I can vouch for the new Toyota being a true Land Cruiser. The prior 100/200s generations had lost their way by being bloaty luxury.

Best review of the Land Cruiser on TH-cam! My first Cruiser, but family have had other as Toyota or Lexus. But I have had 3 Four Runners and 3 Sequoias all of which I absolutely loved as daily drivers and on road, off road in mountains, desert and snow storms. I’ve now got 10 K on my Cruiser and absolutely love it. Plenty of torque and power. Handles much better than any other true SUV/off road less than 120K. (Perhaps the battery weight helps keep it so planted for such a square shape that yes gets noisy at >75 MPH. And all that torque makes it easy to drive in all situations - in town, big city, off road. And yes great visibility. Great comfort on and off road.). If you put it in economy you’ll get over 20mph (20-22 idk drive aggressive 24-26 if I drive like I’m about to run out of gas and I think it’s even more linear in eco than sport. Agree about the storage space. If I were Toyota I’d definitely look at that as something that could be improved without great expense and people will notice.

The buying criteria you laid out as almost identical to ours. Problem: I can’t convince my wife how important durability is (she drives a jeep grand Cherokee despite thousands in repairs since 2020). Can you ad a repair guy please enlighten us on the benefits of a Land Cruiser mechanical durability? I’m pleasantly surprised by your comments on the power, comparing it to a hemi in torque

Great review but you definitely got something wrong. The location of the HUD (heads up display) is very adjustable. When I got mine I could barely see it. Making a few simple adjustments can set it up so the shortest of people can see it without issues. It definitely takes some time to sort out all the tech and I’m still learning.

Nice review. I was team LC, but after back to back test drives with the GX, I put a deposit down and receive an OT+ in Atomic Silver. It also comes in a few weeks. I wanted to love the LC and after multiple test drives just could not enjoy the 4cyl. Power was fine, but noisy and unrefined for the price. I wish Toyota tuned the hybrid for more efficiency or offer the 3.4TT from the GX as an option. I was also disappointed in the MPG..all were averaging 17-19 driving very easy. (tested 3 total LC, 1 1958 and 2 PP LC trims) . GX is worse, but I'll deal with it as the powertrain felt better and was smooth, quiet, similar to my GX460 from years ago. You really can't go wrong, both are fantastic rigs. I do think Toyota has a pricing problem as they are stacking up on the dealership lots I visited. Too close to the GX pricing wise and many are going Lexus. Lexus demand is red hot for now and I'm having to buy out of state to avoid waiting months. With the 4Runner coming now with the same powertrain I'm curious how they all will sell.

Haven't Prado 4 cylinders always been noisy and unrefined? I guess that doesn't mean you have to like it, but a rough 4 banger does fit the Prado name historically.

@Juror-45 it did not feel solid, in Thailand I have a LC 300 I imported from Laos and the truck keeps the heritage, it come with a 1GR-FE since it is an Arab spec, the lc 250 does not feel robust and reliable, maybe other ppl like it but not for me in the states.

I like the exterior and interior a lot- especially since they kept a lot of physical controls (much more so than the GX550 variant whose interior lacks by contrast). It's the 4 cylinder drivetrain that I couldn't bring myself to get behind. This should have been a V6 but they didn't put it in there just so they could differentiate from the new GX550. I'm 40 and maybe just starting to show my age, but I don't want a boosted 4 cylinder pulling a 5,000+ pound vehicle let alone up to 6,500 GVWR. I thought it was silly when small displacement engines were getting put in 4,000-4,500 pound vehicles but this is just absurd. The complexity of the drivetrain in terms of long term ownership and repairs is unjustified when you look at the poor gas mileage tradeoff. They advertise fake news MPG for most of these turbo vehicles when you have to be completely out of boost to achieve it- the vehicle is then a slug and grossly underpowered. There's no benefit to this drivetrain over a (turbo) V6 or a V8 in real world driving; you're getting just as bad of MPG and it'll be less reliable than NA while also more expensive to repair. For buyers who are swapping out vehicles every few years none of this may matter, but subjectively I still don't want a rattley little 4 cylinder pulling a vehicle of this size.

It's a land cruiser for sure, just definitely not the best one. It very well could be the best one if Toyota gives it proper off-road goodies. If they give it E-KDSS, better approach/departure/breakover angles, and more clearance. It absolutely can be incredible and it likely will be in future models; just not yet. It took just one year for the GX to improve it's clearance. There is no way Toyota/Lexus will release their top spec'ed off-roaders the first year of production in the U.S. They have a minimum of 10 years of growth/refinement that needs to happen with their entire line.

I think all the new Toyotas are about 15% over priced.
I have the cash, I just can’t spend it on unproven engines and transmissions. The only solid motors now are the hybrid and plug in hybrid RAV4, new A25A from about 2020, 2021 in rav.
We will wait for consumer reports and maybe get a used one later, maybe a 4Runner limited not hybrid. That one has a full time AWD option with cameras.

9:42 I've heard this criticism on many reviews of the 2024 LC, and I agree that it certainly _sounds_ hollow and cheap in the videos. I bought a 2025 LC in the same trim as you fully expecting to hate that sound, but was pleasantly surprised to hear it does not sound that way at all. I think they did something to fix that issue in the 2025 model. It's either that or I'm living in denial. 😂

I am curious about this also. The way it sounds in the video is exactly like all the Landcruisers of the past. LC doors, especially the Prado, have never had a "thud" so not sure why people expect it should have a "thud" now.
