    The "you were in the DoomBox Realm ALL ALONGGGG!" twist would work in a more subtle movie. It'd be kind of like Dark City (or, like, the Madoka movie) if weird background things started happening and went uncommented upon, gradually ramping up in intensity until a big reveal maybe 2/3rds of the way through, that'd be pretty neat. Honestly, imaging a movie that had more sympathetic investigators gradually realize the box had already been opened, in a movie that maybe wasn't even billed as Hellraiser until the end credits or something. That's a twist that wouldn't really work in the age of the internet, but I think it'd be neato.

    I have to argue a bit about what you said about the cenobites not originally being sexual beings , yes some of them ( including the one pinhead is based on) are sexless but the one that originally takes Frank is very clearly female and it is described very graphically. Also the cenobites through time have blurred the lines between pain and pleasure so much that the confuse one for the other, they think they are giving the summoner exactly what they truly desire.

    The reason why Hellraiser elements feel so out of place and forced into this at the last minute is because that is precisely what happened. This movie was not originally meant to be a Hellraiser entry, most (if not all) of the script was already written as a stand alone effort when for some reason it was decided to tack Pinhead and the rest to the plot. Thus the disaster we see before us.

    I know I am reading WAY too much into it as a viewer but
    Imagine if instead of an original movie given the Hellraiser makeover, this was meant to be an actual Hellraiser movie showing what actually happens to the people who open the box, the thing that happens after they get sucked into the box by the chains and such
    We got a good look at the Cenobites dimension in 2 and this could've been an expansion on it

    To be honest I loved that movie when I was younger but only because I didn't knew about the Hellraiser franchise. I thought the story was about a detective who's going insane because of all the cocaine he's doing and because the case he's on is too much to deal for him. Something like Jacob's ladder only not as good :P

      I think Deusdaecon is right and I’m positive that this was originally supposed to be a “dirty detective falls prey to demonic forces” film and the Hellraiser elements were added at the last minute.

    This has become a weird staple of horror nowadays: jerks we're supposed to care about after horrible things happen to them. That's not horror if the characters aren't allowed to have a single redeeming quality. Then they're just as cartoonish as pure-as-the-driven-snow characters.

    • @sebastianhoward3304
      @sebastianhoward3304 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The guys a dick yeah but I think he’s actually really watchable. The most he does is cheat on his wife and do coke. In what world does that equate to it being ok to being mentally tortured for forever and having to watch everyone he cares about get brutally murdered? I actually liked the character and if you didn’t ok you won’t like the movie but he’s not a terrible pos either. The movie he’s constantly trying to figure out who’s taking the fingers of children and that’s why he’s not giving attention to his wife and daughter. It’s also shown in the therapy session how much he thinks innocence is portrayed in children and how much kids mean to him. So my point is he’s not just some unlikable asshole, I feel like plenty of people have cheated on their wives and it’s like what these people are unlikable assholes who don’t deserve to be critically analyzed like any character? He’s a flawed character, it’s part of what makes the movie interesting. Silent hill 2 is a great example of having a protagonist that you learn later on is kind of a pos but you still like him and are emotionally attached to him anyway. Or for more of a film example how about clockwork orange? Alex is a complete pos in that movie yet you care about him the entire way through anyway.

    • @sebastianhoward3304
      @sebastianhoward3304 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh and as far as redeeming qualities he did have one, he was trying to fucking save a child who were getting their fingers cut off! How is that not a redeeming factor? And it’s what drives the whole plot too!

      The script for this movie was actually written with no Hellraiser connection, at all, and then they changed it into a Pinhead related entry. I'm not sure if the entire script was already written when they decided to switch gears but I do know this movie was not originally meant to be a Hellraiser movie and it really shows.

    • @smoothoperator501
      @smoothoperator501 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I liked it, too. Well, kinda. It goes beyond then just physical torture by Pinhead and the cenobites and shows us the psychological terror as well. Even if poorly executed, we get to see what can happen when you temper with the box and how you can end up in your own personal hell. It is named the inferno after all.
      Does it stray away from original Hellraiser too much? I don't know. Maybe. But it doesn't mean it's necessary a bad thing to do so. Hell works in mysterious ways, too.

      Amazing might be pushing it but certainly could happen. At the very least we'd have a potentially decent movie vs the amalgamation of hell raiser and the original script. I mean it's an interesting plot when not forced to be a movie it isn't, shame we didn't get to see the original idea..
      It kind of seems like after the first 2 maybe 3 movies that for the most part the hellraiser ip just used the name on random things to try and pull profits

    the reason it goes back and forth through the same things ia because its supposed to be based on the Divine Comedy. You are right on two points: very ham fisted, and just doeant work as a Hellraiser story. One thing, though, and i may be misunderstanding what you meant, yes Pinhead is involved with biblical Hell. He was the Hell Priest in the book, and is refered to as Hell's favorite, along with the Cenobites from the first two movies. after those(def 3, maybe all subsequent movies) Pinhead created his minions and the were just known as Hell's Servants, if i am remebering right. The comic books explain alot more than the movies

      after a relatively long narrative arc and a cenobite civil war.
      It is impossible to open the box if you are not chosen by leviathan, or at least it's how i understood it, and because kirsty opened the box she was chosen to either becaome part of the flayed/ or become a cenobite. it depends on the kind and intensity of your hunger for pleasure, knowledge etc. there are also multiple configuration of the box as well as different ''boxes'' for examples certain notes on a violin or a crossword puzzle etc.

    So this is the first Hellraiser to officially name the box on screen, BUT it's actually not the first film to name the box. In deleted footage from Hellraiser 4 (before the studio chopped the film to pieces), Angelique actually names the box the Lament Configuration during a discussion with Pinhead. She also named Merchant's light version the Elysium Configuration. Seriously, the original version of Bloodlines was so much better... anyway, just an interesting Hellraiser fact.

    One way this film could have been improved is if they changed it to how thorn never opens the box and instead hell is simple bleeding through to our world because of how often the box has been opened which in turns seeks out and destroys evil people or those with twisted ideals. Have it as a side story in the hellraiser universe and not a main title and it could be better

  • @krispalermo8133
    @krispalermo8133 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I may very well be off on this statement or question.
    The first two movies, the cenobites were only interested in the " pleasures " of the Flesh, and not in " ones private hell." H.R.2 shows Frank's private cell show how the cenobite tease and deny they victim's lust.
    Cenobites in the first two movies thrive on lust, fear, pain/ pleasure, desire for the next new rush.
    The end of Inferno the lead character is left Shell Shocked and not wanting more lust.
    Hellraiser 3 in question may have started out good and showing the back story to Pin Head,
    " cough,cough,cough," Pin Head is a look you in the eye lover of tease and follow through effect. Not a random mass murder, but a serial killer. The Box really only opens up for chosen victims.
    The first movie started out as an adultery, murder, and incest/ rape story with demons thrown in. The second movie was a lot different.
    So how do you film a movie of a guy who finds the Box in a pawn/ junk shop, walks around his neighbor hood trying to open the box just to pass the time. Has lunch with his friends where all of them give a try to open the Box. Later the guy is in a liquor store seeing a slut get spank and pimp handed, then a couple of thugs robs the place and him. The slut runs out with three thugs and they easily open the Box. { End film }

    Best Hellraiser for me. Of Course it's not a Hellraiser per se, but nevertheless I love it. Well... except for the Cowboys. A Antihero story who faces his own hell as consequence of his actions. That's torture after all, so I'm fine with Hellraiser badge on it.
    However.... am I the only one who thinks on Max Payne while watching the movie? I mean... the real first game, not the shitty movie.

    The ending doesn't even make much sense as we don't see any suggestion the loop is going to change, and he can reset it by killing himself, so in effect, he can go out and party doing tons of drugs until he would come across creepy stuff, then kill himself and just use it as a way to repeat the same awesome party days over and over as it takes so long for anything meaningful to happen to him, and even that is because he chases the engineer which obviously he won't do now he knows it's not real.
    I mean I know that's 1 small nitpick in a film of complete crap... but ye

      Right, So its either chatterer just with his legs cut off, making it a lazy rendition of an old cenobite, OR its supposed to be a completely new cenobite that just so happens to look like chatterer with his legs cut off, making it both incredibly lazy AND devoid of anything creative or original because as i mentioned before its just chatter with his legs cut off, so according to you I was being too kind on the film, and letting them get away with claiming to have "created" a new cenobite when really they did fuck all.

    Love all your vids, and this movie is garbage, BUT! I don’t think it’s fair to bash the movie on the fact the main character is a douchebag. The character is the character. “The Florida Project” has a similar main character (the mother). Though, I can see where perhaps a “jerky” character may not help move the movie or themes along.

    Read the scarlet gospels... It proves everything that you is say wrong.

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      well considering that a large amount of what I say is opinion based critique a lot of it can't be wrong just different, also forgetting the fact that non-clive barker associated Hellraiser films have nothing to do with the scarlet gospels in the first place, all of the reviews were written before the scarlet gospels was released so I don't see how I could've foreseen what it said, what can I say they were accurate at the time of writing.

    • @reptilepope6454
      @reptilepope6454 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also the title of the first book is called the hellbound heart... Sadly the scarlet gospels was a shitty book designed to please those who never read the first one or any other clive barker book he is so off his own personal touch in that book that it "tore my soul apart" :( WTF CLIVE!?!?! I thought he had integrity but he seems to be in it for the money with that book. There are only two hellraiser films worthy to pay money to watch and that is 1 and 2. But the rest is pure garbage, But you cant really define what clive is referring to when he wrote about the cenobitic order of the gash You get a vague idea of some sort of interdimensional sadomasochistic enteties and also again the first book was called the hellbound heart and when he describes what frank actually goes thrue in the book it pretty much sounds like hell to me. Pinhead isnt even depicted correctly in the first movie he is supposed to have one jewel encrusted nail in his head at speaks with the voice of an excited girl. Sorry if this makes no sense english is my secon language amnd im pissed drunk atm.

    • @reptilepope6454
      @reptilepope6454 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe he fell for pressure to release the book failing to even review his own work. I can imagine he got more than one GIVE US THE SCARLET GOSPELS e-mails, So he just wrote some abrahamitic religious bullshit... So fuck clive he took something wonderful and turned it in to dogshit... Brand him and cast him out.
