    To clear that "supersmell" ability of Lector up with the vine bottle, if leather is taken good care of (with for example special kinds of oil ) it does give of a rather strong smell. So for someone who worked as a cook and therefore has at least some kind of trained nose it does interfere with the senses

    • @NodDisciple1
      @NodDisciple1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yes, and hunters and trackers also tend to have senses better than that of the average human, to better track their quarry.

      After I quit smoking my smell became so sensitive I can barely stand it. I can smell everything good and bad from much further away than I used to. It's too much.

    This is a brilliant movie based on a brilliant book. And Clarice is one of my favorite strong female characters, because unlike other films where strong women are portrayed with male characteristics (physical strength, aggressive, etc.) - what makes Clarice stand out, have a better relationship with Lecter and catch the killer is her feminine qualities like compassion, listening, noticing little details etc. Absolute brilliance, now I want to read the book again. PS, I feel like very few credit goes to Ted Levine, who plays Buffalo Bill. He's really awesome and a very underrated actor.

    Rewatching your reviews on this series when something clicked, Hannibal also shook a bit (metaphorically) in Red Dragon when that detective brought up the eating of organs. Could it be the reason this effects our dear Dr. Lector is because since those are his trophies, and the taking of trophies is a basic serial killer element, he hates thinking of himself as a basic serial killer?

  • @danysanta8875

      Some of them are. If you like learning about serial killers, see if you can find the Encyclopedia of Serial Killers. There's one that breaks the killers up into different categories based on MOs, motives, whether they're spree killers, serial killers or mass murderers. It's fascinatingly morbid and morbidly fascinating.

    Great review! One fun thing I noticed after multiple viewings is that when Clarice is making her way to Crawford's office at the beginning, the man who tells her she can wait in Crawford's office is quietly talking with someone else about Will Graham. It is quick and it took multiple viewings before I even noticed it, but it was just a cool little tie in : )

    You're missing the point. Thomas Harris INVENTED the idea of the aesthete serial killer, with his weird installations. He basically took the idea of the ritual killer (which is a sub group of the multiple murderer) and rarefied it into something like an art, with the gourmand Lecter presiding over a world of exquisite compulsives. It's a fantasy. It's not meant to be realistic.It's also an inverted joke: brutal violence re-figured as an act of beauty.

      Chazbot Is your name a reference to the Simpsons season twelve episode "I'm Going to Praiseland" where comic book guy hallucinates that he is Spock and Kirks chair has a mind of its own. He proclaims "Chazbot! My Captain is in peril!" Using his Vulcan laser vision to lower Capt. Kirk to his safety. 🌯

    • @stopthephilosophicalzombie9017
      @stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Not entirely; Harris actually composited Buffalo Bill from several real life serial killers (Gein, the original leatherface, is mentioned in the video), and likewise took elements of Ted Bundy's character to inform Lecter's. Also real life serial killers have made elaborate displays with corpses. Dahmer had some very bizarre ritual practices that were even worse than merely eating them. He actually tried to make people into zombies by drilling holes in their skulls and injecting various chemicals into their brains. Ew.

    • @JorgensZelda
      @JorgensZelda 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 Also some elements of Albert Fish sneak into Lecter. There's a lot of serial killers you can thank for these two specimens. Buffalo Bill's labyrinthine basement reminds me of H H Holmes murder hotel with all the weird, secret rooms for killing and hiding victims. Just... whew.

    Apart from other considerations that have already been pointed out in connection with this film, I have found, since I started living in the US Mid-West, that Harris' books and this movie have a very strong feel for the forgotten towns, decaying institutions, backwoods, industrial belts and cold second-rate cities of the United States. Unlike many other Hollywood films, it accurately shows a real, sad, ignored small-town America that you find all over Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, Michigan, and the Carolinas.

    • @stopthephilosophicalzombie9017
      @stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sounds awfully elitist. Some small towns are actually very cool, from college towns to other post-industrial/in transition places. Big cities are typically hives of degeneracy and mental illness. I never want to live in a city as big as NYC or L.A. again. That many people piled on top of one another is a recipe for hell.

    • @jackdaniels2905
      @jackdaniels2905 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 chazbot is not insulting people from that part of America, nor is he being elitist, he's or she, is commenting on how some parts of America seem to be forgotten.

    • @stopthephilosophicalzombie9017
      @stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jackdaniels2905 His implication that these places are sad and ignored is pretty condescending. Some towns are in decay, but some are vibrant and house what is left of a real American culture that will be the glue that will be the only defense against the global forces of technological alienation pressing down on all of us.

    great review of a great movie! One thing about the ending - at the very end they actually go back to watch Hannibal walk off down the street. At 22:35, you ask "how did he pull off getting the pen?" My money says that neither Clinton or the guards noticed that he left the pen. So when nobody was looking, he might have laid on the bed, (most likely,) at some point and took out the part of the pen he took for a handcuff key at night when it was dark and nobody could see him. Then, with the rest of the pen, he either:
    A. Swallowed it. Maybe not this one.
    B. He hid it somewhere in his room, (like the bookshelf,) as established, he does exploit ppl when they throw off their routine. I doubt they searched Lecter's room before and while he was in Tennesee. Another gamble he took. Most likely "B"

But 1 thing I've noticed is that when you explain good plot points and when you sarcastically point out stupid plot points they both sound the same. Like, when you were describing how slimy Chilton is I first thought in my head, "That's not a flaw. Chilton is supposed to be that slimy." But then I realized that you had just said a fact, not a criticism; it was just said in the same way. I don't know. Just thought I"d share my observation. I really am enjoying your reviews, though. Though the fear to make them distracted so they don't check him to carefully was probably also a big part of it.

    old review, but I'll go ahead and defend Clarice's decision going down into the nut basement to face off with Bill. Given that it was difficult to locate Bill boy, it was entirely possible he'd escape to go off and do his routine elsewhere. Extreme and violent forces are usually taken with high profile killers, because they are a hazard to society. And also, Bill's a psychotic nut, unstable, with a high likelihood of killing off Catherine before taking the back door. Yes, it would have been safe for Sterling to run off and wait for backup, but the fallout would have been dire, and her mission failed.

    In the book, Lector was referred to as a sociopath, not a psychopath. I wonder if they made this change in the film because they needed to dumb it down for the audience.

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well a sociopath and psychopath are different things and Lecter certainly fits a psychopath more

    How did Hannibal know about the chrysalis? Has Bill been killing people since before lecter was captured, or has Bill explained it to him. Does he simply understand the transformation analogy?

    • @deusdeaconReviews

      Benjamin raspail (mr head in jar) was close with bill and told lecter alll about him also bill had one therapy session with lecter, this was all befor his arrest of course

    So I just realized you wear the evolution shirt in your animated avatar but you haven't reviewed it. I'm not sure what your plans are for any more movie reviews but I would enjoy listening you talk about my favorite worst alien movie

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      the logo is actually from the comic book series Transmetropolitan so that would be why I've not reviewed evolution, they're similar images but the difference is the evolution one has the middle eye raised higher then the others where as the transmet one the eyes are in a straight line.

    Obviously love the Silence of the Lambs, who doesn't. Anthony Hopkins is terrific. You should also, however, give credit to the first season of Hannibal and Mads Mikkelsen's portrayal. It's completely different, but visually and intellectually very pleasing. The focus on the aestethic aspect and its importance for Hannibal is such a superb choice!

      You probably don't know about the patreon goal I've setup where I will be reviewing all 3 seasons of the Hannibal tv show if we reach a certain amount, also me imitating the cooking scenes from Hannibal was my loving homage to the series while keeping the movie reviews focused on the movies.
